I visited the Clinique counter in search of something to improve my overall skin texture. I hadn't read much about the product at the time but the consultant highly recommended it so I decided to give it a go.
Clinique is available in most department stores and usually in Boots aswell, you can also purchase online but I prefer going to the counter for something new as I like to see the shade or feel the texture before I buy it.
* Dermatologist-developed to be safe and comfortable in improving the appearance and evenness of skin tone
* Helps reduce the appearance of dark spots, age spots, traces of a blemish past.
* For all ethnicities. Can be used comfortably twice daily, and long-term. Suitable for all skin types and tones.
This made such a different to my skin! I have a lot of old blemish scars which really bother me and they definately took care of them, smoothing the texture of my skin and giving me my confidence back! I don't really have age spots so can't comment on that but there was such an improvement on the blemish marks! The texture is light and soaks into the skin nicely. I used it twice a day as recommended, in the morning underneath my make-up and at night before bed under my moisturiser. I was pleased it worked nicely under my make-up. There were no negatives with the product, it was like a dream on my skin. I also think it's good that it's suitable for all skin types.
HOW TO USE:
* Pump 2-3 times and spread the serum all over your face before moisturizing.
* Also appropriate for chest and backs of hands.
* Always wear daily sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher
It comes in a white bottle with a silver pump and a clear plastic top. You can't see the product through the bottle therefore you can't see or feel how much you have left, when it's gone it's gone!
VALUE FOR MONEY:
This product is available in 3 different sizes.
* 30 ml - £39.50
* 50 ml - £55.00
* 100ml - £89.00
Sadly I couldn't afford to keep this up, the 30ml size was lasting me about a month so it was working out too expensive. I WISH I could though as I definately could see an improvement in my skin. I would definately recommend it!
I should probably start off by saying how I came to purchase this product. Basically I've never had acne but I did develop a fair bit of blemish scarring, some of which turned into dark spots. I did have a couple of sun spots before ever having breakouts, but this has caused my skin tone to become very dull and uneven. Certainly problems nobody wants! Anyway I was getting tired of having to cover these up everyday so was hoping to find a product that would help with this. Cliniques Even Better Dark Spot Corrector was the first dark spot Corrector I had come across, and I must admit the hefty price did make me hesitate to rush out and buy it. In the end I decided to bite the bullet and headed straight for Boots.
I picked up a 50ml version of this and without even stopping to look at the price, I headed for the checkout. I thought the price was around £30, but this is for the 30ml bottle. For a bottle containing 50ml of this product, will set you back at least £50!! :O Luckily I wasn't on a budget back then, and I reasoned with the arguement, 'well if it works...'
The dark spot Corrector comes in a white and clear plastic cylinder shaped bottle with a pump and a clear plastic lid. The side of the bottle plainly features the name of the product and the Clinique logo. The product itself is yellow/golden in colour and has a slightly gel-creamy texture. It does have a sent to it, but nothing that is overpowering or unpleasant.
Clinique claims that this dark spot corrector will do exactly as it suggests, as well as improving the appearance of acne scarring and overall skin tone. They also claim that you should see results after 4 weeks of continual use. Personally for the price of the product 4 weeks is a long time to wait, especially if you're impatient like me!
Directions for use:
The directions given for this product is to apply it daily to the face after cleansing and toning and then follow with sunscreen, to protect the skin from further sun damage. Then to proceed as normal with any makeup etc.
For me, I wasn't completely sold on this product. I really wanted to love this, mainly for how much it cost me I was expecting to see at least some improvement! However I honestly didn't notice any change... Admittedly I probably wasn't as religious with Jain this product as I should have been but I did apply it almost every day for several months until all of the product had been used. I didn't bother repurchasing, as it is very expensive and from reviews I have read, most people only noticed a slight difference in colour to their dark spots. This to me suggests you would have to continue using this product, which is a price I'm not sure I'm willing to commit to, considering I didn't see much of a change. The only thing it seemed to be for me, is a very expensive moisturiser. And for a moisturiser, I certainly wouldn't pay that much! I would have given this one star but knowing that I wasn't very disciplined in using it, I think I should therefore give it at least 2. I think I may try again but with smaller bottles to give it a fair trial, but so far I am doubtful as to whether my opinion will change.
I first heard of this product a couple of years ago when browsing through one of my Mum's magazines. In recent years I had started to notice a few darker areas of skin pigmentation on my face, particularly when I have a bit of colour from the sun. Obviously this is not a great look but I was unaware that there was really anything I could do about it other than ensure I used a high spf in the sun to stop the condition from worsening. When I read the article it seemed too good to be true but I am a big fan of Clinique products so I went down to Boots to investigate. The Clinique lady at Boots was really helpful and very enthusiastic about the product. She explained to me how it worked and told me how her sister had suffered very badly from skin pigmentation issues and that this product was really helping her and making a huge noticeable difference. As with all Clinique products (in my opinion) this is not a cheap product but I was prepared to give it a go as I was optimistic that it might help. Since my first purchase Clinique have replaced the product with this new version which is supposed to be even more effective but it is basically the same product.
Pigmentation means colouring and skin pigmentation is basically a disorder which affects the colouring of your skin. Your skin cells make a substance called melanin which gives your skin colour. If your skin cells become damaged this affects the melanin production - if your body produces too much melanin then your skin becomes darker and if it produces too little melanin your skin becomes lighter. Often these pigmentation disorders affect only patches of your skin although they can also affect your entire body. It is believed that pregnancy, Addison's disease and sun exposure can all make your skin darker.
This product comes in a small, white bottle with a pump action. It is available in either 30ml or 50ml, and the instructions and ingredients are printed on the bottle. It is available to purchase without prescription from stores such as Boots, John Lewis, Debenhams and House of Fraser.
The product itself is a creamy coloured serum. It does not have any scent. It is a very lightweight serum which absorbs really well and quickly into your skin and I think it feels really nice and leaves your skin silky smooth.
Using the product
To use this product you simply push the pump to allow a small amount of the serum out. I would like to point out that you really do not need to use a lot of this product as a small amount really does go a long way. Personally I only use the product on and around the affected areas. It is a very lightweight serum and I think it feels really nice and leaves your skin silky smooth.
It is recommended that you use this product twice daily and personally I use it in the morning before applying my moisturiser which contains SPF25 and again at night. I do not wear makeup very often but you can apply your usual makeup over this product once it has dried.
Clinique's claims for this product are that within 4 weeks it:
-visibly reduces the appearance of uneven skin tone/hyperpigmentation
- measurably improves appearance of dark spots and discolourations
- minimises the visible effects of sun damage, skin age stresses and past acne scarring
- creates a more even skin tone
- improves skin clarity
I am fortunate enough to never have suffered from acne so I cannot comment on whether this product works effectively on acne scarring as claimed but I can honestly say this product has really helped to even out my skin tone and minimise the pigmentation and also that I believe that this difference was noticeable in much less than the 4 weeks they claim although obviously the longer I use the more effective it becomes.
My skin is not 100% even all over now but I would say it is very close and to be honest I only use this product in the summer months or when I am on holiday somewhere warm as the pigmentation is not noticeable when I do not have any tan so perhaps if I was to use it all year round (as you are probably supposed to!) then I may see even better results. That said I am very pleased with how this has worked as the darker areas are really not very visible anymore and I don't feel self-conscious about them now as I believe they are not really noticeable to other people only slightly to me because I know they were/are there.
I would say that if you are going to try this product you do need to be diligent with it and ensure that you do use it twice a day every day to see real results, especially within the 4 week timeframe. Personally one bottle of this will easily last me through the whole spring/summer/autumn when I need it but I guess how long it lasts for each person will depend on the size of the area affected and how much you put on.
I am really pleased with how this product has worked for me. It has been extremely effective in reducing the darker areas of skin on my face which in turn has given me more self confidence. Not only has it done this though but I believe the product also gives you face a bit of a glow to it and it makes your skin feel really silky - I have had comments from people about my skin and asking what foundation I am using when I am only wearing this product and a moisturiser on top.
The initial outlay is not cheap, currently retailing in Boots for £39.50 for 30ml or £55 for 50ml, but I would say this product does last a long time and in my opinion is worth the money for the way it helps your condition and makes you feel better about yourself. Look out for special promotions on Clinique which do happen fairly regularly in both Boots and Debenhams. This product can also often be found in duty free shops at airports for a slightly cheaper price.
Wash your hands after applying - although this product does not have any scent it has a very unpleasant taste!!
I've tried a lot of clinique products this year, disappointed in some and almost happy with others, so not totally sure why I was certain this was going to work either, but I took a silly chance like I always do and purchased this from house of frasher, I believe clinique is also sold in most boots stores as well, you can also get this online, this set me back quite a bit of money, it was £53 which is really shocking as there is only 50ml of this!
This is supposed to even out your skin tone, supposed to clear up acne scarring, blemish's, sun damaged skin and dark spots on your skin, now this is like a moisturizer you apply it twice a day although do be careful how much you use as it's not the biggest or cheapest. It is supposed to improve your skin tone by 53% this improved it around 10-25% as the only difference it made, was a different shade to my blemish's and it wasn't far off from the original shade.
This lasted me around a month which is quite good, but after I used my first bottle I never bothered buying another one, and the blemish's went back to their original state, so again I think you would have to use clinique products for your life time otherwise they will just keep coming back!
I'll start off with my sob story...
Acne got the best of me at the tender age of 11, I literally had angry red speedbumps covering my forehead. As I went through my teen years, the spots migrated to my cheeks. I then decided to really start taking care of my face, drinking lots of water, then using the clinique 3 step anti blemish solutions. So far so good, I still do occasionally break out but nowhere near the extent of those I had when I was younger plus any breakouts I get these days are easily covered with make up. As a result of the years of acne I unfortunately have been left with a souvenir also known as pigmentation and uneven skin tone. My forehead is quite dark, but my cheeks are quite light. In contrast I have dark areas on my cheeks where the spots would be and no matter how much exfoliation, microdermabrasion treatments, cleansing etc the pigmentation will not shift.
This brings me to the Clinique product. I had seen advertisements in the magazines but always kind of knew in the back of my mind that it would be really expensive so I forgot about it. I was in Boots during their events where you get extra advantage card points and went to the Clinique counter for some face wash. The girl at the counter informed me that not only will I get extra points but I also get a free gift if I buy another Clinique product. I faffed around for literally 30 mins before I was recommended this product. I was really adament because lets face it £32 for 30ml is expensive. She assured me of the benefits and told me that the new ingredient is something you can get on the NHS and that is why this products costs so much. I decided to buy the corrector as I knew I would lose sleep over not going ahead and trying it ( I am being serious I would actually not sleep lol )
So for twice a day for a month I was using it religiously only 1 pump for my face and jawline and suprisingly the amount of product left is not a lot. One pump is bigger than a pea size and is a golden colour. It smells quite pleasant too. You cleanse and tone your face then you apply the corrector. Immediately your skin feels as smooth as a baby's bottom, it feels as though you have primer on. You then apply an SPF face cream, make up and away you go.
My skin feels crazy smooth, the dark pigmentation spots have DEFINITELY reduced and I can tell as I am not wearing as much foundation anymore. Ideally I would love it if the pigmentation completely disappeared but I have horrendous eye bags so make up is always a must. I am really happy with this product and have bought a 50ml bottle and will continue to use it. Defo recommend this but remember it is not a miracle cream and don't expect it to work overnight, it takes time for your skin to heal.
I was given this for my birthday to try and help my acne scars, it claims it should do just that. It has a lovely velvety texture which makes your skin feel really nice once it has soaked in, but you MUST was your hands as soon as you have applied it. I did not know this then suddenly noticed the ends of my fingertips were very sensitive and after putting this on they tingled so yes wash it off your hands. I can feel it tingling on my face too but not in an unpleasant way it feels like it is working.
I think it has taken longer than it said to start noticing a difference but there definitely is one the scarring is reduced and it seems to have an effect on spots which are there are well drying them up.
Make sure you don't put this around your eye area as it dries it out .
It says on the bottle to use sunscreen when you are using this, I can't do that because the sunscreen causes spots so instead I only use this at night and it feels like I wake up in the morning with twice as good skin.
It is very expensive but a little goes a long way, I have been using this now for about five months and am not even halfway through the bottle.
This product is a serum used on the face to even out skin tone. Clinique claims that the product improves the appearance of dark spots and discolorations. It is said that the serum minimises the visible effects of sun damage, age stresses and acne scars. On top of all this it will give skin clarity.
The effects are said to be visible after 4 weeks of use. I have been using the product for almost 12 weeks now and am honestly unsure if it has improved my sun damage spots that I intended to illuminate. I am willing for success so that I can buy another bottle when this one runs out because I love the feel of it when applied. It leaves the skin silky smooth and baby soft. It is a great base for makeup but so it should be for the price. It costs £37:50 from places like Boots, Fenwick's and John Lewis. It is not yet available on cheapsmells.com which offers branded beauty goods at a reduced retail price. Therefore, in my opinion, the price is high for a product that lasts around 3 months. It is recommended that continual use of this product is essential to providing the desired effect on the skin so think approximately £150 a year- ouch.
The Clinique consultant in Boots was very helpful and friendly and advised that I use another product in conjunction with the serum which is called City block. It is a face cream which provides factor 25 protection and is necessary for preventing any further sun damage to the skin so I bought this too. This was advised for me personally due to the problem I have with sun damage and uneven pigmentation. You may be wanting to treat a different condition like the ones mentioned at the start of my review and for those cases, I cannot comment.
In a nutshell, when my bottle is empty I will probably purchase another bottle in the hope that I am helping to break down the dark spots on my face. Sometimes I look in the mirror and think that the spots have faded and other times I feel that they remain the same. This conclusion is less than satisfying BUT I do like the product for the way it feels on the skin. If you shop around you will find that some retailers will be offering free gift bags with every purchase of a Clinique product and that is for another review.
Do you suffer from pigmentation or past acne scarring? Well if you do this is the most perfect product for you! I have learnt quite a lot about pigmentation purely through being quite interested in it and how it occurs.
***What is pigmentation?***
Before I explain what this product does I think the word pigmentation needs to be clarified. Pigmentation can range from lots of freckles to age spots or dark spots. Freckles are inherited and are sometimes brought out by the sun, they are a form of pigmentation but they are not primarily what this product is trying to eliminate. Half the people with freckles quite like their freckles and freckles can come and go. I have a patch of freckles which only come out in the summer around my nose which I don't mind. But dark/ age spots are slightly different they are more like patches of darkness which can occur all over the body but the face is obviously where people want to get rid of them because they are most prominent. Dark spots can be inherited but most peoples are caused by UVA and UVB rays from the sun... so it is mainly from excess sunbathing without wearing any sun protection/SPF. These patches can also be triggered by stress too.
***How does the sun cause dark patches?***
Basically dark patches are the skins way of defending itself against the sun or stress. Meloncytes are a group of cells which produce melanin (the pigmentation) causing the darkness. The darker the patch or spot the longer it has been there and the harder it is to get rid of. However most people with age spots tend to have the notion that they cannot get rid of it... however you can! This is where Clinique's product comes in. First of all you can get prescribed medication and lotions to help this but Clinique's product is without prescription and uses a leading prescription ingredient.
Clinique has had two versions of this product and the second or newest version which you can only get now is called Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector. It is a serum which uses gentle exfoliation and a prescription ingredient to help break down the melanin and lighten the melanin so it is less visible.
***Why I bought this product***
I do not suffer from pigmentation but I do suffer from minor acne scarring. I had seen the Even Better serum over a year ago but I thought it was quite pricey at £30.00 for 30ml so I never bought it. But one day I was browsing around the Clinique counter and the lady asked me if I wanted a consultation so I had nothing better to do so I sat down and she asked me if I had any main concerns with my skin. I said to her that I have now combated my acne but I still have marks left from it which are annoying because there are days when I would love to wear no makeup but this stops me from doing so. She suddenly grabbed this product and was so enthusiastic about it. She said it was the second version of the Even Better Serum that hadn't been out long. She explained the benefits to me and told me why it was so much better than the previous version (due to a specific new ingredient). She let me feel it and it felt extremely silky and it was for all skin types even oily skins. I asked her the price and she said £37.50 for a 30ml. At that point I thought oh dear I hope she doesn't think I am going to buy that because it is a fortune! But I think she saw the look on my face, she then brought out a chart of different colours of darkness (like a paint chart) but for pigmentation. She put the chart against my darkest acne scarring and said something along the lines of "if you were to buy this product today we would expect to see it to be two shades lighter within 4 weeks" and she pointed to the chart to where she expected it to be. She also said that within 6-8 weeks that it should have evened out my skin tone by 53%. Which I was quite impressed with. She showed me some photos of some success stories they had found during the research of the product and I was thoroughly impressed. But I thought I needed to be honest with her. I told her that if I had to use this product for 6-8 weeks that I couldn't afford the number of bottles of it at the price it was. But she assured me that a little went a long way and that the product only needed to be put on the specific area of acne scarring/ pigmentation which for me is on my chin. It was to be put on morning and evening after my moisturiser. So I weighed it up and thought ok as long as it does what she is telling me and she thought that two bottles of it would decrease it by 50% I thought I need to give it a go. So with gritted teeth I held over my debit card at the counter for it. Arrhh I thought I had made a really horrible mistake and wasted a lot of money.
After 4 weeks of using it, I can see a difference. My skin does look more even, it feels better and less bumpy. I can also see that the redness has been reduced and the acne scarring has been slightly reduced. Plus best of all I still haven't run out of the serum, I cannot see into the bottle but I think from the feel of the weight of it that there is about a quarter of it left. But if I have seen a difference with this product and mine is quite minor scarring then somebody with dark patches of pigmentation would see a dramatic difference. I recommended it to my mum who has started to see a couple of very light patches on her forehead and she is now using it to try to prevent the pigmentation becoming darker and she loves the feel of it.
Even if you don't suffer from pigmentation it is definitely a product to keep in mind if ever you did. I think the thing to remember with all these serums or 'wonder creams' which my grandma calls them... that the advertised dramatic results like the anti wrinkle creams do not diminish the problem over night... give it time and let the product have time to work. I have also read recently on the internet that there is also other products by Clinique in the same range to eliminate pigmentation, these include:
* Even better skin tone correcting moisturiser SPF20 £32.00
* Even better foundation SPF 15 £20.00
Another thing that must be remembered is that if you do use this product to eliminate any pigmentation that you should also wear an SPF daily to protect your skin against further damage.
I would definitely recommend this product! 5 out of 5 stars from me! However it is quite pricey and I think they would probably sell a lot more if the price wasn't quite so high perhaps £25.00 would have been more reasonable!
