Clinique Glosswear Lips
Advantages: The colour was favourable
Disadvantages: Left my lips feeling sticky and very heavy
If you read my previous review you will be aware that I was one of the many thousands of women who rushed to the newsagents to purchase the April edition of Glamour magazine, particularly as Clinique were offering a variety of their products as a free gift on the covers. Due to the shelves being almost empty I only managed to obtain two copies of the magazine; one of which was accompanied by Clinique's 7 Day Scrub and the other being their Long Last Glosswear SPF15. Whilst I would always use lip glosses in my younger days, more recent years have seen me wearing moisturising lipsticks, but as summer was looming I purposely bought the magazine for the free gift and this review discusses my experience with using the product.
APPEARANCE OF THE PRODUCT
My initial thoughts on the appearance of the product were too girly, as I'm not one for pinks and purples. However, I didn't wish to apply a transparent gloss to my lips, as I always favour a touch of colour, so I was quite excited about trying a product with a slight tint. As my product is a trial size my tube contains 2.3 ml, which is a fairly good amount, particularly as I would only need to use a small amount at any one time. The tube displays the familiar Clinique logo, which is presented in an eye-catching shiny silver text together with a few details of the product. The long lid is plastic, which has been coated with a shiny silver covering and my opinion of this product is that it is marketed at those women who love pinks and anything shiny, which isn't me at all. However, the packaging is neither here nor there as far as I am concerned, as what interests me the most is how effective the gloss is and whether I would be converted after using the trial size.
WHAT DID I THINK OF THE PRODUCT?
The version I received is a fairly pale pink, but there is no indication on the tube of its' actual colour, which as far as I am concerned, is a failure on the part of Clinique. I seem to recall the details were provided with the magazine, which was discarded several months ago and if I should want to repurchase I would have absolutely no idea of what colour I require. Unscrewing the lid is an easy task where I am able to witness the wand containing a small padded area on the one end. This was quite a challenge for me, particularly as I've been solely using Boots No 7 lipsticks for as long as I can possibly remember. I applied some of the product to my lips and instantly noticed that it was fairly thick and I needed to dip the wand into the tube on a further two occasions to sufficiently cover my lips. My initial thoughts were yuck, as my lips felt extremely greasy and very sticky. However, I presumed that the gloss would dry within a short space of time, so I waited. Unfortunately, this was not the case and whilst the pale colour was very favourable and tended to throw more focus on my made-up eyes, I did not like the heavy and sticky feeling.
I found that each time I needed to open my mouth that the sticky product had slightly glued my lips together; something I'm sure my husband would find very favourable! However, it was not a feeling that I particularly liked and I am very surprised at the poor results offered by such an expensive brand of product. A problem I found considerably frustrating was that I had to be extremely quick with replacing and screwing the lid back on, as it tended to shoot back out due to the force of the remaining gloss! Not wanting to give up after only one attempt and due to the fact that I loved the colour, I continued to use the product on many more occasions, but the heavy sticky feeling was horrible and is not something I experience with my lipstick. Whilst Clinique claim that the product will provide lips with a glossy appearance for 8 hours, this is a statement that I simply cannot agree with, as I found the product seemed to vanish when I took a drink and it left a sticky mess on my glass or mug.
The only good point I can really make about this gloss is that it contains SPF15, so I had the assurance that my lips were fully protected from the sun's harmful rays. However, due to the reasons I have discussed above, I found myself discontinuing using the product and I have reapplied it solely for the purpose of this review to familiarise myself. Whilst my normal Boots No 7 lipstick is easily removed with one sweep I found that this lip gloss needed quite a vigorous rub, particularly as it seemed to have glued itself to my lips in several areas. I have looked on the Clinique website to read their marketing on this product where they advise that the product moisturises lips, which is something I could possibly agree with, particularly as it's so greasy. I have compared my tube with the colour chart on their site and am of the opinion that it is named Milly Pink, which is a very favourable colour and is perfect for the summer months.
INGREDIENTS AND OTHER INFORMATION
I do not believe in copying long lists of ingredients into my reviews, but would confirm that I suffered no adverse reactions when using. The gloss is fragrance free and has been dermatologically tested. The tube can be recycled once empty.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
I was shocked to learn that a full sized tube of 6 ml will cost £17, which makes my 2.3 ml tube worth over £5! If you are interested in purchasing this product, I would advise that it is available in 18 different shades and can be purchased from any Clinique stockist, which tend to be found in department stores and larger branches of Boots.
Unfortunately, due to my unpleasant experience with this product, I cannot make any recommendation and as a result, it receives only 1 star from me.
I hope you found my review useful and would thank you for reading.
Summary: A very disappointing lip gloss from Clinique
