Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara
Advantages: Even, thorough coverage without stickiness, excellent brush, curls lashes for a dramatic effect
Disadvantages: Dramatic effect won't appeal to everyone
It certainly sounded good; the Clinique website states that this mascara will 'coax lashes to a long, bold, upturned look, without a pinch, pull or tug. Smudge, flake, smear-resistant formula holds for up to 24 eye-opening hours.' The mascara is suitable for contact lens wearers- I'm not sure if this is the case with most mascaras or not.
This mascara comes in a silver tube, with a standard screw on cap and is available in black and black/brown (the mascara I received was black). Unlike the standard 'High Impact Mascara', this tube has a curved brush, and I was interested to see how this would affect the appearance of the mascara on my eyelashes. I tend to shy away from curved brushes like this, as I've found it harder to apply mascara evenly with them in the past. The good thing about this brush was that it looked thick and soft, with a generous covering of bristles (that makes it sound very prickly, but I can assure you it's not!).
Applying the mascara was really easy- the curved brush meant that I could cover the lashes all the way along the eyelid in one sweep. The thickness of the brush meant that it picked up quite a lot of mascara, but I was very surprised by how evenly it deposited it- the only slight clumping came from the end of the brush, where the mascara had gathered, and even this was quickly dispersed by another sweep. My eyelashes weren't stuck together, but were individually defined, and didn't need separating with an eyelash comb. I attribute this both to the brush and the quality of the mascara- it's thin consistency means that it glides over the lashes, highlighting them to their very tips without any of the stickiness that you get from thicker mascaras. The only slight problem with the mascara's consistency is that it makes the lashes quite stiff when it dries. In some ways this is a good thing- the lashes retain their shape well for a good few hours after application. But the stiffness also means that applying a second coat once they've dried makes them look quite thick and spidery, as it just doesn't blend in to the first coat.
On the curling front, I hadn't expected much- surely a mascara couldn't make that much difference to the shape of my eyelashes? Well, here again I was pleasantly surprised. A quick sweep of this brush and my eyelashes were left with an upturned, doll-like look which was similar to that which I get after using eyelash curlers. The curved brush helped to lift them, and the mascara highlighted this effect by bringing out the full length of the individual lashes. So using just a little of this gave the same results as you'd expect from using several coats of ordinary mascara, but without the heavily painted look. This is great if you're short on time- just whip a bit of this on and you've got the dramatic, open-eyed look that would normally take a while to achieve.
Personally, I'm not too keen on the doll look- I prefer something a bit more subtle and natural for everyday use, so this probably wouldn't be my mascara of choice unless I was going for a dramatic look. But I was very impressed by the fact that this mascara lived up to its claims and really did deliver the results it promised- upturned lashes that keep their look for hours on end. The quality of the product shone through, and I'm now fully convinced that mascara is one of those products that it's worth spending a bit more on. The fact that you only need one coat of this to get great results means that it lasts longer than most mascaras too; my half tube is still nowhere near finished after several months of use. Having used this product (and the standard Clinique High Impact Mascara), I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the brand to my friends, and will certainly be choosing it next time I'm mascara shopping. Clinique, doling out the freebies has paid off- you've won me over!
Summary: A mascara that lives up to its name.
