I received a mini version of this when I made a large because from this counter at Debenhams.
Although I find Clinique a superb brand it doesn't work consistently for me so I was sceptical about trying this.
The brush is very full in appearance giving the impression that it will increase the volume of your lashes and help 'add' the look that your lashes have multiplied.
I found the application was flawless and really 'combed' through my lashes immediately given the impression I had more lashes but in a natural and understated way.
Apply too much of this and you may find it clumps easily.
I saw a big difference in the up lift of my lashes and the look held all day long which I was grateful for the only reason (and most important for me) is that it is water proof. I also get the giggles to the extreme and this obviously causes havoc with mascara if it is not waterproof and this sadly isn't.
Although this is otherwise great in effect and I think reasonably price, £16, I just don't know if that alone if enough.
To remove this product was also difficult. I know its down to the branding of eye makeup removal, of which I find LANCOME is fantastic whereas unfortunately SIMPLE's brand of makeup remover will not work with this.
In the morning, I found that I still had panda eyes and it smudges to the point of being really difficult to remove.
Overall you might like to try the small samples which you can on EBAY pretty cheap instead for splashing out.
I love using mascara from Clinique, I always feel that their formulas are more gentle and less harsh for the eyes. I have very short eye lashes and after using this I found that the volume of my lashes were thicker and slightly longer. The mascara gives a lovely natural look, so the difference is not too dramatic. The mascara is specifically thickens the lashes making them look bolder - I only noticed a slight lengthening effect, so if that is your main concern then this is not quite the right mascara.
Unfortunately, as with many mascaras, this product still flakes, and I think the longest I've been without any flaking is about two to three hours. This is what annoys me the most about mascara is the flaking and the depositing of smudge marks underneath the eyes. I have wasted so much money trying so many different ones so to find one that doesn't flake or smudge.
This one is good if you're only going out for a short while, but any longer than about 3 - 4 hours, you might need to keep checking in the mirror. But overall a nice gentle effective mascara.
Mascara is a weakness of mine, a real weakness I really can’t help myself when I see a new one or try a new one – it’s quite a bad addiction of mine and that’s why I have a good four or five mascaras in my drawer at home! I really need to stop buying them, but I have become very selective over which brands I buy now and it does depend what kind of reason I’m wearing mascara too!
I originally tried this mascara when I got a free trial of it in a magazine!
The mascara is listed here as an all black tube, however my latest tube is black, with a silver lid. So I think they must have changed the design recently.
So this mascara is marketed as, a lusher, plusher, bolder lashes for a dramatic look!
I was pleasantly surprised the first time I used this mascara, I’d never really dabbled with Clinique before – I’d more been a Lancome girl when I’d bought premium brand mascaras. The brush is a normal round barrelled brush, with a slightly tapered end that is apparently good for the outer lashes. I find if I do a bit of a blink at the same time I put my first coat on it gets right to the base of my lashes and goes all the way out to the ends, it gives me a great covering even from one coat. However I do add more than that depending on how much of an effect I want to give my lashes. For work I’ll just go with one coat, but for a day or night out I’d go for a two or three coat effect and compared to my natural lashes they look absolutely stunning – almost fake. For a day or night the mascara lasts really well, I’ve not had a problem with it flaking under my eyes, eyeliner does that for me! Only problem I have is when I cry or get water in my eyes – because this mascara stings like nothing on earth! However that’s just me, it might not bother you, either that or I have to stop crying!
A great mascara that has fantastic effects on my lashes, but does make me want to cry, especially when I’m already crying!
It is £17.50 a tube, but it is a bit cheaper than some of the more premium brand mascaras that are well over £20 for a tube so it’s a bit cheaper!
I bought this mascara quite a while ago and used it for my wedding day. It was really nice but I found it difficult to apply.
The thing that was difficult to apply is that the wand is really thick so it's difficult to apply this to your eye lashes in a smooth motion, it's so easy to end up getting your eye lashes stuck together in big clumps or to accidently get the mascara all over your eye lids and its so thick. This was really frustrating. The wand is quite rounded so when applying to your middle lashes it's not too bad but applying elsewhere is just fiddly and messy. The mascara itself is quite thick too so it's gloopy and if you don't get it on fast enough it soon dries and you end up with clumpy lashes.
What I did was use a brush from a different mascara and this made it easier to apply and once on it looks really effective, very dark and gives good coverage. It has brilliant staying power too, it will last many hours. It is slightly waterproof but I wouldn't say 100% at all.
I do like it but it's definitely not the best designed brush and perhaps teh mascara itself is just that bit too thick. I have bought it again since but it's not my favourite one and you can probably find better ones for a cheaper price too. So it's okay but definitely not the best one!
Last year a friend of mine was working in Boots and her friend worked the Clinique counter, she passed on lots of lovely products which were mainly in the plain sample/tester packs but one day she handed me a few of their 'free with purchase' gifts which hadn't been given away and inside each was a small High Impact mascara. I've been using them on and off ever since, using other mascaras in between as to be honest I've never been completely thrilled with this one and tend to use it when I'm running short of one of my favourites but still want to apply some colour to my lashes.
My main issue with the Clinique mascara is that it irritates my eyes, quite badly at times, and being a contact lens wearer this isn't ideal. I get some degree of irritation each time I wear this mascara, I don't have particularly sensitive eyes so haven't a clue why this happens but I do know it's enough to prevent me using what is otherwise a super mascara.
The colour (01 Black) is excellent, glossy and sooty at the same time with superb coverage of each and every eyelash. The brush is narrow enough that I can get right into the corners of my eyes and the slimness of the brush also helps me to sweep my lashes up to create a good feathered effect, I've been applying mascara for so long that it's almost second nature now so it's rare I mess up unless I'm faced with an awkward brush - this one glides on so smoothly and beautifully that I'm never worried I'm going to make a mistake and do class this as a completely fool-proof mascara.
Mine isn't the waterproof version but it stays in place brilliantly even if my face does get a little wet for whatever reason, I used it when we went to the Safari Park recently and was relieved when my mascara didn't leak down my face after I'd been on the log flume (and got pretty drenched). Funnily enough I didn't experience any irritation at all that day and remember being surprised about that, I'd only used this mascara as the trip was a last minute thing and we were already out so I had to do my face with what I had to hand in my bag - my heart sunk when I realised I'd probably be looking at the animals through sore and gritty eyes so was chuffed as nuts when the mascara chose that day to behave uncharacteristically nicely!
Priced at £17.50 I suppose it's worth the money if it works for you, the results aren't especially High Impact though and you do have the risk of irritation so I won't be buying again.
Clinique High Impact Mascara
Why did I buy this product?
Well to be truthful, I didn''''t actually buy this product, I was given a free sample in Boots (small tube), my friend and her mum were also given tubes and thought it would be something I would like and they wouldn''''t use so they passed them onto me. So whilst I haven''''t bought it, I have been using this product for over a year now.
The mascara comes in a fairly plain but elegant black tube that has a slight green shimmer to it. The full size product contains 8g of mascara which is a fairly standard amount.
The brush provided claims to be specially designed to separate lashes, but as far as I can tell it is a normal mascara brush. I have found that it is not any better than any normal mascara brush. Personally I prefer the spiky rubber applicators and I think they do a better job than this traditional brush.
I was disappointed with the product itself - with a name like High Impact I was expecting it to be similar to the mascaras that claim to look like false eyelashes - that it would make my eyelashes look dramatically longer and/or thicker. It did not do this. It does colour my eyelashes black, but there is not much noticeable difference in length or thickness. If you want a straightforward everyday mascara then you should consider this product, but don''''t be fooled by the High Impact name.
The product is good quality though - it is easy to apply and doesn''''t clump. I usually apply 2 coats to the top and one to the bottom. The advantage of it not being too dramatic is that I can use it on my bottom lashes just to accentuate them, without it making me look like a doll!
Price and availability
This product is widely available - from the Boots website, Boots stores with a clinique counter and many department stores. The price is high for such an unimpressive product (£17.50/8g)- I could have achieved the same effect with a product for a quarter of the price.
Would I buy it again?
No. If you want dramatic lashes then go for one of the Maybelline mascaras or Benefit They''''re Real. This gives an everyday effect but not for an everyday price.
So who are Clinique exactly?
Clinique was originally founded in 1968 by a single dermatologist who began with an assumption that hygeine and cleanliness was the beginning to treating all skin conditions e.g. dry, oily, normal or breakout skin. Since then Clinique has been self motivated to customise their products to individual types of skin to suit an individual persons needs.
Clinique thus created a three step skin care system which consists of cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing the skin. If you go into Boots and get a free skin care consultation they can point out for you what skin care products are best for your skin type and how to use them effectively to get the best results. Of course with the various different skin care providers they all have anti-aging and eye creams which were introduced in 1999.
Why did I buy this product?
Ok I didn't "buy" this mascara so to speak - I had one free in a cosmopolitan magazine and another one free in a Clinique bonus time freebie (of course sample sizes) but I always find that there's a mascara that doesn't quite do it for me like they could make my eyelashes too thick or the liquid could be too gloopy or hard... Or I'm just a serial complainer I'll let you decide.
Clinique High Impact Mascara
As a first Impression the tube is a very dark green (almost black) and looks slightly glittery/metallic with silver writing with Clinique and High Impact Mascara. The freebies I had are just 3g each and the ones that you can buy from a Clinique counter or the Clinique website are 8g (that's for the full sized product). The wand is long and the brush is thin compared to others that I have used before. The brush is brissly like the old victorian hairbrushes (or like the toilet cleaning brush) which I like but I do atually prefer the plastic comb. The end of the wand is thin and there's no curve or bend which is a bit of a downfall for me. After inspecting the look I'll admit I was a little disappointed as the full sized mascara is £16 and to me that's a bit steap for a little bit of mascara where my preference just isn't there (after all you'd expect a little more than that really) so I decided to try the mascara out once I'd finished off my other mascara.
Now Clinique say that this mascara is "High Impact Mascara is a multi-benefit mascara that adds maximum volume with definition and length. Specially developed brush and formula work together to dramatically thicken lashes while separating." Thinking about that statement I actually agree to an extent as it does thicken my eyelashes that's the first thing I notice when I put this mascara on and it does definitely add length but I can't say that it separates my eyelashes as they can stick together a little bit in the corners. On the other hand saying that whenever I do use this product my eyelashes are spread more than when I've used other brands of mascara which is a much better result of course. Clinique also say that the benefits of this product is "thickening" which I do agree with - it wont give you an over exaggerative thickening of the eyelashes but it will definitely help to make them look thicker but if you want

them to look really thick then this product really wont do it and I would say that this product is best off for when you want a more natural look (although you can get a really good natural look for free by not wearing make-up!)
Overall though thinking about the product and what it gives I do agree that it's thickening (but not massively thickening) and that it does add length I wont say it spreads ALL of your lashes as you still get some stuck together but I do think it's a good product. However, you can only purchase two colours which are Black or Brown/Black which is a bit limitting really and I would have liked to see different coloured mascaras being sold even though I don't personally wear them myself - I just think that small varieties should be available if I did want to go out with electric blue mascara or bright pink - I just think the variety is very limitted although that's being very picky as I wouldn't wear any other colour than black.Of course there are other mascaras that Clinique do to give you different benefits and these are;
High Lengths Mascara
Lash Power Mascara Long-Wearing Formula
Lash Doubling Mascara
Naturally Glossy Mascara
Lash Building Primer
Bottom Lash Mascara
High Impact Curling Mascara
Using the mascara
So I did run out of my soap and glory mascara and I decided to start using my Clinique sample ones. So after applying the foundation I started to brush on the mascara and my eyelashes thickened up instantly as well as the length. My eyelashes were a little stuck together on the inner and outter corners but they were evenly spread throughout the majority and middle section which was nice and it gives me more of a natural look (almost as if I'm not wearing mascara - until I pile on more of course).
I'm actually quite impressed with the result although I do think that with every other product I've reviewed that there is definitely room for improvement and I would say that the shape of the brush would be a start as it's a bit awkward to get the roots of my eyelashes and they can sometimes go without mascara so a curved brush would be a winner really but other then that there's no other improvements that I could think of without being extremely picky like wanting the tube to be pink or something petty. Another thing that impressed me about this is the length of time it's taken me to use just one mascara. As I keep a make-up bag in my handbag for those emergencies (crying in the cinema over dumbledore dying or the monthly warning which ladies will know what I'm talking about) and I noticed that each tube lasts around five weeks which is pretty good for 3g whereas I was buying a new mascara every five weeks at 7g so I really was pleased with this so as a rough estimate I would say that a full sized tube would last for around three months which is still good even if the price is a bit too high.
As I stated the mascara gives me length and it gives me thickness although I do advise that anybody who does want really thick eyelashes needs to either apply several coats of mascara or add powder or even find one that has given them the really thick eyelash result because this will give you more of a naturally thick looking result - naturally thick on your eyelashes of course though. I like how this mascara gives you a more natural length instead of one that can make you look a little ridiculous or question what length was supposed to be added.
When the big question comes up as "is the mascara waterproof?" I'm not entirely sure whether it even matters anymore as I find that if the mascara is waterproof then that's great but it's a b*tch to get off when you're trying to remove your make-up and can make you start to pull out your eyelashes whereas if it's not waterproof and it rains - you'll look like a panda crossed with a drowned rat if Mr. Umbrella isn't about. This is actually another thing that I do like about this mascara though as it is waterproof but you can at least remove it although I noticed that with my Rimmel London eye make-up remover it doesn't come off too easily but it comes off marvelously with the Clinique make-up remover... I wonder why.
Did this irritate my eyes?
No, this mascara did not irritate my eyes although this doesn't mean to say that the product wouldn't irritate your eyes and my suggestion is that you test the product before you buy if able (a consultant at the boots clinique counter should be able to do this for you) and if it does irritate your eyes then do not use this product.
Warnings and suitability
Unfortunately, Clinique have failed to give any warnings or suitabilities for this product and it's something I would have liked to see although it's more or less common sense that you shouldn't consume the product (eat) and if the product irritates you then simply discontinue using the product and consult your doctor then maybe sell the product on ebay (although as a warning any used eye make-up products that are being sold on eBay that are used are unhygenic as that's how you can get eye infections).
I think that this product is suitable for most people and as it's tested for even the most sensitive eyes I would say that nobody should find this product in the slightest bit irritating. I myself did not find this irritating and I do have sensitive eyes but I would always recommend that you look at the ingredients and make sure that you aren't allergic to anything and if you are then do not use the product and if you do notice any irritations then stop using the products and go to your GP for recommendations and perhaps stop wearing eye makeup for a couple of days to help prevent further irriation.
My tips on;
*Your pillow is full of germs - think about it - you sleep for around six to eight hours on your pillow and how often do you change your pillow? It's not necessarily the case either so you may want to wash both the pillow and the case as you will actually get germs from your pillow which will clog up your pores and create spots.
*Another thing is your phone, have you ever been on the phone and then noticed a bit of make-up on the phone? If you have then imagine what else is on your phone besides make-up. You touch your phone with you fingers and whether you realise there are germs/dirt or not you will leave bits of dirt and then somebody rings and you put the phone to your ear and the dirt is then pressed onto your face. If you notice spots more so on one side of your face then this could be why. Wipe your phone over before you make a call to help reduce this.
*Finally - be healthy and happy. If you eat seven takeaways a week and you drink loads of fizzy drinks not only will you be packing more pounds than the bank but it'll show in your skin, hair and nails. Nails will chip easily, hair will break easily and become greasier and so will your skin therefore promoting blemishes. Make sure you eat your veg and better still drink plenty of water. You'll feel happier too.
*If you want thicker eyelashes then you don't need to keep applying mascara - if you get an old eye shadow that you don't use and brush them over your eyelashes this will actually help to build up your eyelashes so when you do put the mascara on - it'll look much thicker instantly and wont be costly to you (or you could get eyelash extensions.
*If you make a mistake don't go and buy the garnier correction pen it's much cheaper to get a bit of tissue or the edge of a sponge and remove it gently with some of your make-up remover - it's effectively the same thing only it wont cost you around the £5 mark.
*When you apply eye shadow remember that when you sweep you're getting a thin colour so if you want it to be more obvious then pat the eyeshadow onto your eyelid gently and be careful not to pat too hard.
*If you want to make your eyes look a little brighter then apply a white eyeliner in the corners of your eyes - this will help to make them look a little whiter.
*If you want a thin line of eyeliner then find a good liquid eyeliner with a thin applicator and brush along the eyelashes - think of when you draw a straight line down the center of a book using one side to make that straight line, it's the same technique and can be done to make a thin or a thick line.
Value for money
In comparison to brands such as Rimmel, Mac and Max Factor this is more or less £10 more costly which in hind sight could pay for you to go to the cinema and get a bag of sweets (back in the day it would have paid for a drink as well but now prices are just extortionate). Usually I wouldn't spend this much but as I like the brand I actually would not but saying that eBay sells most things at a very discounted rate and unless there's a good promotion on at boots at the Clinique counter like bonus time and then £5 additional on the Boots card then it's better to buy the product off of eBay which you'll find that 3g of this mascara is £2.99 and the full size (8g) for around £10 which is a bit lighter on the pocket. I think that at £16 though it isn't badly priced as I said this mascara as lasted me three times as long as any other brand I've used so to me at around £5.33 a month it works out around the same as what you'd spend on brands such as Rimmel and Maybelline so I wouldn't say no to paying £16 but I would try and get the mascara cheaper in the first place.
I'm going to rate this mascara four out of five stars simply because I think that there could be a better variation of colour, the brush doesn't get all of my eyelashes to the roots too easily making things slightly awkward and there's no warning at all for the product. The positives about this product is that it will give you thicker, longer lashes that look more natural than some other mascara brands out there although I wouldn't say it's the best and I have used better mascaras before but I like this one as it helps to give me the best natural look. I would still recommend this to a friend as I do think that it's a good product and a good mascara but I would also recommend buying this off of eBay.
I first tried this mascara in a Clinique 'bonus time' gift set. For those of you who have never heard of 'bonus time', it's an offer that Clinque do every so often where you receieve a free gift set upon purchasing two or more items. I think it's a nice idea, at least you get something back every so often and also it's a nice opportunity to try new products you maybe wouldn't go for normally. Clinique is widely available in all department stores, most Boots stores and also online.
* a multi-benefit mascara that adds maximum volume with definition and length.
* Specially developed brush and formula work together to dramatically thicken lashes while separating
This is a good mascara, nothing more...nothing less. The wand is a pretty standard shape, maybe a little on the large side. It lasts well and doesn't flake off which is good. It improves the thickness and length of the lashes. It's easy to apply to both the upper and lower lashes. It is availabe in two shades: black and black brown. The packaging is very simple, black with silver writing. My biggest critism with this mascara is sometimes I found it went on quite clumpy which is massive no-no with a mascara.
HOW TO USE:
* Apply to lashes: start at the base of the lash and brush up to the tip.
* Repeat to build.
VALUE FOR MONEY:
For an 8g tube the price is £16.00 and it lasts a fair amount of time but I guess the most important question is would I repurchase it? The answer is probably not, although I don't feel it's a bad product I just feel there are better products on the market that are cheaper.
I first received this mascara in a sample size with one of clinique's 'bonus time' gift sets as I regularly use their skincare products. Normally it would be out of my price range as a mascara isn't something I would spend too much on, but after trying the free sample I was so impressed I now own the full size version!
The packaging is very sleek - a black tube with product details written on the side and a black lid which unscrews to reveal the applicator. I prefer a thick mascara brush so I was very please to see that this was nice and thick with plenty of bristles. The brush was very soft and easy to use - it added a nice amount of volume, coated all my eyelashes evenly and there was no clumping or sticking together of eyelashes. It was also surpisingly easy to reach the corner eyelashes with such a thick brush.
The colour that I received in the sample was black (there is a black brown available) which gave a great finish - it enhanced my eyes and did make my eyelashes look thicker. I have also tried the newer shade of brightening black which claims to enhance the eyes more, but I can't really see a huge difference between this and the original black.
I wasn't expecting much in terms of staying power - this mascara makes no promises to be smudgeproof or waterproof but I was pleasantly surprised. There was no smudging or flaking and even an emotional evening barely moved the mascara - I expected panda eyes but was left with no such thing! The only thing that really seems to make the mascara smudge is washing your face or getting caught in a heavy downpour. However, it was incredibly easy to remove. I initially used clinique own eye make up remover (another freebie) which got rid of all traces very quickly, but even using a cheaper eye make up remover did the trick very well.
This is a product i will continue to use (and clinique regularly have it as a freebie in their bonus time gifts!) and I think it is worth the premium price. I tend not to wear mascara every day so this product lasts me a long time. However, if you were a more frequent user it will still probably last 6 months (by which time it is hygienic to throw it away anyway). It may be at the higher end of the price scale, but it is a great buy.
* PRODUCT DETAILS *
I do love a bargain. I was therefore delighted to discover that a recent copy of a glossy magazine was giving away some freebies with each copy of their magazine. As the freebies were from the "Clinique" cosmetics range, which is a range I really like, I decided to purchase a few assorted copies of the magazine to take full advantage of the small selection of cosmetics on offer.
One of the freebies at this time was a small, 3.5ml tube of Clinique Mascara. I believe there was only one colour or shade choice available at the time, which was a dark black shade. Even though the Clinique brand contains an assortment of mascara products, I believe there was only one option supplied with the magazine, which was the "Clinique High Impact Mascara."
The small tube of Clinique Mascara is not available to purchase separately, although I do believe that I have had similar sized products as free gifts from the Clinique brand when making a large purchase in-store. The full sized version of the product is available to purchase from a variety of retailers such as Boots and House of Fraser. Prices vary, but appear to be in the region of £15 - £17 pounds. The mascara can also be bought online from retailers such as Boots (www.boots.com) where the current price is £16 plus postage costs, although a quick online search shows the mascara is available at a slightly cheaper price from discount retailers such as www.cheapsmells.com, where it is available for £13.45 with free delivery.
* MY EXPERIENCE *
The packaging for the product is quite attractive I suppose, although I couldn't confess to thinking it was at all innovative or offered anything particularly eye-catching. The plain black tube and shiny 'chrome' effect lid are actually rather cheap looking in my opinion, although I am more concerned with how a product actually performs, rather than the packaging it is provided in. I couldn't honestly say that the product would have caught my eye from the display in the shop which is quite surprising, considering the price of the product, which I consider to be higher than average for a mascara product.
Removing the wand from the tube, I can see that the wand is quite thick at its head, although not overly so which would perhaps make the wand overly heavy at one end or make it awkward to use. I was pleased to note the head's slightly large size, given the product is designed to provide "High Impact" to the eyelashes. In my experience, those mascaras with thinly-shaped heads on their wands are rubbish when trying to achieve this effect.
Whilst I am on the subject of the mascara's wand, I found that the larger-than-average brush head provided here was not overly fiddly for me to use, and I didn't experience any problems with smudging or anything which is a huge plus point of course. I have to be honest, however and admit that my eyelashes are very dark and quite long naturally, so I felt they were able to cope with the larger-than-average brush head quite easily. I could quite understand if somebody with short or very fine lashes found this brush more difficult or slightly cumbersome to use as a result of the large head and the wand's length being shorter than usual, given the product is a 'trial size' version of the real thing. I had no such problem however, so I won't be deducting any points from the product rating for this.
I found the Clinique mascara had a rather strong smell, which I confess I found quite off-putting at first. The previous mascara I had been using prior to this one had absolutely no smell that I could detect, so perhaps this is why I found the Clinique product's aroma to be so noticeable. I found the smell to be extremely clinical and really rather unpleasant, but thankfully it disappeared altogether once the application process was complete, so I could live with it at least.
The High Impact Mascara is completely jet black in its colour and I noticed it to be very 'glossy' with a noticeably high shine to its liquid. It looked to be quite thick, and certainly it didn't drip from the applicator wand prior to use.
I thought too that the High Impact Mascara was rather easy to apply, with one or two coats being more than sufficient for me to coat my long lashes with an ample amount of the glossy liquid. This provided full coverage to the lashes and I found the indentations in the wand's head coped excellently at meeting all the lashes framing my eye, with perhaps only one or two at the outer corners being missed out and requiring a further coat, mainly due to their location rather than the product itself. I noticed no annoying 'clumping' from the mascara, and this was the case too if I opted to apply a second coat which I often do.
The end results were impressive enough, although somewhat unremarkable, but that is not to say I was not happy with the results achieved. To explain, I felt that the Clinique mascara provided full coverage to my lashes, and I found the process of application was rather quick and easy to undertake, providing a 'fuss-free' method that suited me down to the ground. I felt too that the mascara's brush was of a high quality and I liked the design, as I touched on earlier.
The liquid mascara fared well too, providing full, glossy-looking coverage to my dark lashes that I did appreciate, without causing any unsightly smudging or dripping which made the liquid feel like one of high quality. In addition, I found that the mascara did not rub off or run with too much haste; albeit, it's not waterproof in any way, but it didn't budge too easily either - so, perfect for me and my own requirements.
The downside to the results achieved are that I felt the end result was far from being "High Impact" and this led me to feel disappointed. Instead of this effect, I felt my lashes - whilst certainly covered to perfection - had a similar end result being much less noticeable than one of 'High Impact.' In fact, if the product had not had it's High Impact name, I would have assumed it was an 'everyday' mascara product rather than being something aimed at providing any sort of dramatic or intense effect.
To summarise these findings a little better, I am happy with the results achieved from using the Clinique High Impact Mascara, but only for everyday wear, or for less formal occasions. For a more dramatic or 'intense' look, I opt to use a different product entirely as this Clinique offering just doesn't deliver on this score - well, certainly not enough to achieve my own desired effect. So, if you are thinking of purchasing it on this basis my advice would be to steer clear, and this goes for anybody with short or fine natural lashes too as I just don't think the product is suitable for creating this type of effect.
As with all products in the Clinique range that I have tried out before, I have experienced no issues in terms of sensitivity or aggravation to the sensitive eye area which has led me to the conclusion that the product actually contains quite a mild, gentle formulation.
Additionally, I have had no difficulty in removing the product along with the rest of my facial make-up, finding a moist facial wipe or some everyday make-up remover are more than adequate to remove all traces from my skin.
In summary, I am happy enough with my freebie tube of the product and think it provides a nice effect for everyday use. I didn't feel the product lived up to its claims however, so one star removed from the product rating for that. I can't confess to being blown away by the Clinique High Impact Mascara which is a bit of a shame as I had high expectations for the product.
~Add impact with Clinique~
I was lucky enough to have been given a well sized sample of this High Impact Mascara from the Clinique range a short while ago, after a very helpful consultation with the Clinique consultant in a large retail store. I was advised at the time that this particular mascara may suit my needs as I wanted a nice full look well defined, with no clogging once in place.
As I tend to prefer the old school style applicator brushes that are fitted to some mascara products, this product was again the most suited to my needs according to the consultant I spoke with, as it featured a nice full bristle type wand style applicator.
I had a choice of 2 mascara colours at the time and after having tried both colour options (one colour on each set of eye lashes) I opted for the black shaded version of the product, as I felt it would be more versatile when in wear. I did sample and compare the other option offered, which was a black brown shade, although when I sampled this in store (using a disposable applicator offered by the consultant) the effect was no where near as crisp or dramatic as I wanted. I compared the brown/ black lash effect to the sleeker effect that the black coloured version of the High Impact Mascara had in store and found that I liked that far more.
~Using the product~
In use I have found this mascara product easy and quick to use as the applicator wand works as it should, allowing me to get a nice even coverage on my eye lashes that does give a nice light yet wide eyed effect when applied correctly. The small and compact product container that my mascara came in is around 2/3 of the size of the full product, as it contains a little less of the full sized 8gm product. However the applicator brush remains the same as that used in the full sized product, using the same soft, well spaced bristles to give a wide eyed yet not too heavy and flaky looking finish once on the lashes.
The applicator wand is a little shorter in length than usual, as it corresponds to the length of the product tube, although I have not found this to be an issue in use as the mascara is just as easy to apply as the full sized Clinique mascara products I have bought in the past. The lid of the product container doubles as a handle for the applicator brush, which is I find to be pretty standard with these types of product and I have found that it works well enough in this respect. The applicator wand slides back in place after use and the lid is easily tightened to give a secure closure that keeps the mascara protected after use and stops it from drying out.
The texture of the actual product is neither too thick and clumpy, nor too thin and runny, as it gives a nice, even looking, well defined end result in my opinion. I have found that by following the Clinique consultants advice about wigging the applicator brush a little to remove any excess product from the brush when removing it from the container (prior to use), rather than rotating the applicator wand in the product tube, has worked well when using this mascara. I have been generally pleased with the looks I have achieved when using this mascara, as it gives a nice highlighted look to the eye area without looking or feeling overly heavy.
~Price and product rating~
The cost of the full sized product is around £16 which I feel offers fair value for money as a single 8gm tube of the product should last quite some time. The mascara does manage to define the eyes quite well in my opinion and it stays in place for a full day without the need for a top up if applied with care. I would consider buying this product in future as I have enjoyed using it and I feel it compares well with the other mascara products I have used in the past. My rating for the product is 4 stars based ease of use, results and price.
Make-up is a girl's best friend and we all seem to be on the endless quest to find a perfect mascara. Applying eye make-up is an easy way to enhance your look and there is a style that will suit everybody but the key ingredient that everyone needs to finish off their eye look is always a good black mascara. I managed to snag a travel size tube of this Clinique High Impact Mascara when it was offered as a freebie with Glamour magazine. This costs £16.00 for an 8g tube and I have a smaller 3.5g version.
Product description: "High Impact Mascara is a multi-benefit mascara that adds maximum volume with definition and length. Specially developed brush and formula work together to dramatically thicken lashes while separating."
This mascara comes in two different shades - either black or black/brown. I have this in black which is good for me because I like my lashes to look dark as this helps them to look more prominent, and it also suits my naturally dark hair colour. It comes in a standard plastic tube with a long wand inside. The brush end is well covered with lots of evenly spaced bristles.
The mascara brush is quite full and the numerous bristles allows you to reach in and apply the mascara evenly to each eyelash as well as combing them through during the application to avoid any sticking and clumping. When I use this mascara I tend to apply two coats to my upper lashes, and one coat to my lower lashes. This gives a really striking look that opens my eyes for a pretty wide-eyed appearance. If i want to go for a more retro look I apply extra mascara to the outer edge of my upper lashes for a cat's eye sort of style. The mascara looks really elegant, adding shape and length to my lashes. It really defines my eyelashes and gives a full look which is just as suitable for a natural day to day look as it is for a more polished evening look. The only thing I'd say it doesn't do is give a boosted thickening effect. Even so, I think it really enhances my eyes and gives me a feminine flirty edge. The effect lasts all day long, and my lashes stay looking just as neat and groomed by the end of the day as they did when I first put it on. It does not dry out my lashes, nor does it go flaky, run or smudge onto my skin. I've been caught out in the rain when wearing this mascara and even though it's not waterproof it still stayed in place perfectly despite the soaking.
This High Impact mascara gives a perfect finish which I think looks absolutely beautiful. I am always really happy with the way that my eyes look after I've applied this as it's always flawless and reliable. I would definitely go out and buy the full size and can happily recommend it to anyone.
I've been using the mascara for over five years now, since I thankfully moved onto the more premium brands after my teenage years. My first tube I received as a gift and I have been a convert ever since, having had a 'difficult' relationship with mascara in the past - more later.
The packaging: This mascara comes nicely packaged in clinique's classic floral packaging which brands all their make up range. The tube is plain black with silver writing and the clinique branding included - I think it looks premium and fits in with my other make up packaging - however some other clinique mascaras are in a far nicer silver tube and it would have been nice if they had changed the entire range to look like this.
The product: In summary the mascara is very easy to apply.
I have a bit of an unusual issue with mascara - I have extremely long, natural eyelashes combined with needing to wear glasses - If I wear some of the more heavy duty ones, they seem to make my lashes clump together and extend them too much so they brush off my glasses which is fairly unpleasant (I think this achieves not the 'wide-eyed' lusted after look, but rather a bit of a too big eyed wild spidery look - Not good). I've tried cheaper alternatives and they always irritates my eyes, especially if I use my contact lenses.
Using this mascara eliminates these issues.
The brush is good quality with lots of bristles, to catch all the little lashes in the corners. The actual liquid is a nice consistency, not runny, but also so thick to cause clumping issues. It only takes me about 20 seconds to apply each morning, in any colour as long as it is black (It is also available in brown, but I cannot comment on this colour).
Overall this gives my lashes a well defined, but thickened, healthy look, perfect for the office as it is not over the top, yet good enough to at least make me look awake! I should also mention I would never consider adding to my morning routine so using a mascara brush after application is not an option.
My morning application lasts all day and I have never needed to use more than one coat, whilst I often head out after work to see friends.
Even when I have a tube open for a couple of months it doesn't seem to dry out, therefore no clumping issues here either.
Price: About £16 for 8g.
So is it good value for money? I should add here that I use a lot of products from the Clinique range, therefore get a lot of the bonus time gift sets and they almost always contain this as a sample size (a good sample at 4g - half what you get in the full size), as a result over the five years I have probably only needed to buy the actual full size for myself about five times! Yoohoo! Would it bother me to hand over £16 each time I needed a new mascara? Not at all this is a great product and I fully recommend it if like me you don't want anything too over the top but still want to look groomed.
My tip if you do want to try - try get a sample size one on ebay, you can get it for about £4 for 4g, so costs less per g than on the Highstreet.
Like many others on here I got this mascara free with Glamour magazines having a few mascaras on the go at the time I decided I'd leave it for a later date to try out. I'd been looking forward to using it though having a friend who kept saying Clinique make the best mascaras ever.
When I opened it the brush was fairly normal, not overly big and nothing overly special, it looked nice and bristly though. It also didn't smell too chemical so I didn't think twice about putting it near my eyes. I did find it a little uncomfortable to apply but this was only because it is a sample size and so the brush is very close to the lid to hold which made it a little difficult to use. I managed but it will definitely be easier using the full size product.
The effect it gave me eyelashes was thick and eye opening without clumping or sticking all my lashes together and looking all spidery. It lengthened and curled my lashes too so I able to achieve the High Impact look I was promised. I tried it out on my bottom lashes too, I don't usually wear mascara here because I find they look thick and creepy, but it subtly made me eyes even bigger without being too spidery again plus it didn't go all smudgey later in the day. I also found it easy to remove too and I just use shops own brand babywipes!
Overall I am very satisfied with this mascara and plan to buy a full sized tube when I run out. I am aware that Clinique are very expensive, I think the mascara is about £14 however I am happy to pay this as I use mascara everyday so it will be worth it plus the mascara I am currently using is about £22! (YSL)
In general I am a really big fan of everything clinique. Since I was a teen I have had really oily skin and am prone to breakouts and find that clinique's products are the only ones that really help. So naturally, when I got really into make-up, although expensive, clinique's products seemed liked the natural step as I at least know I have no funny reactions. I am always excited about new products from clinique and try out most things, however as far as mascara goes this is most definitely my one and only.
At first, in comparison to off the shelf mascaras, this is an expensive option. However for me, I am quite prepared to pay for a better product. At £16 for a full size tube it is at the higher end. Clinique though often has 'bonus time' events at some store or another. This is where if you buy two products, or sometimes spend a minimum (depends on the store) you get a free gift. The gift usually includes a make-up bag and about half a dozen sample products of skin care and make up, and usually a half size tube of this mascara is included. So, if you are like me and buy clinique products anyway, it is worth looking for bonus times, as it can end up saving you a bit of money on some products as you get them free. Try Debenhams, Boots, Selfridges etc, but even times are always shown on Clinique's web site.
Anyhow, about the mascara! There are two colours available, black and black-brown. The samples are always black and I have never tried the black-brown so can't comment. I love the black though. I am fair with pale skin and blue eyes but don't find the black too strong. Having said that, I don't wear heavy eye make-up or falsies so prefer to go for a high impact mascara. Even when I'm having a non-makeup day (which is rare in all fairness) I still don't leave the house without a coat of the mascara.
The wand is wide and the bristles are full and long capturing plenty of the mascara on it, but of course as the tube narrows at the top, any excess is removed so I have never had a problem with clumps. Usually two sweeps do it for me on the top lashes, starting at the bottom next to the lid and giving a bit of a wiggle up towards the tips. But on the bottom I just lightly wave the wand past them sideways so it isn't too heavy. Of course the more impact you want, the more layers etc.
I would definitely recommend this mascara, and would be surprised if you don't love it as much as I do!
