Clinique High Impact Mascara
Why did I buy this product?
Well to be truthful, I didn''''t actually buy this product, I was given a free sample in Boots (small tube), my friend and her mum were also given tubes and thought it would be something I would like and they wouldn''''t use so they passed them onto me. So whilst I haven''''t bought it, I have been using this product for over a year now.
The mascara comes in a fairly plain but elegant black tube that has a slight green shimmer to it. The full size product contains 8g of mascara which is a fairly standard amount.
The brush provided claims to be specially designed to separate lashes, but as far as I can tell it is a normal mascara brush. I have found that it is not any better than any normal mascara brush. Personally I prefer the spiky rubber applicators and I think they do a better job than this traditional brush.
I was disappointed with the product itself - with a name like High Impact I was expecting it to be similar to the mascaras that claim to look like false eyelashes - that it would make my eyelashes look dramatically longer and/or thicker. It did not do this. It does colour my eyelashes black, but there is not much noticeable difference in length or thickness. If you want a straightforward everyday mascara then you should consider this product, but don''''t be fooled by the High Impact name.
The product is good quality though - it is easy to apply and doesn''''t clump. I usually apply 2 coats to the top and one to the bottom. The advantage of it not being too dramatic is that I can use it on my bottom lashes just to accentuate them, without it making me look like a doll!
Price and availability
This product is widely available - from the Boots website, Boots stores with a clinique counter and many department stores. The price is high for such an unimpressive product (£17.50/8g)- I could have achieved the same effect with a product for a quarter of the price.
Would I buy it again?
No. If you want dramatic lashes then go for one of the Maybelline mascaras or Benefit They''''re Real. This gives an everyday effect but not for an everyday price.
So who are Clinique exactly?
Clinique was originally founded in 1968 by a single dermatologist who began with an assumption that hygeine and cleanliness was the beginning to treating all skin conditions e.g. dry, oily, normal or breakout skin. Since then Clinique has been self motivated to customise their products to individual types of skin to suit an individual persons needs.
Clinique thus created a three step skin care system which consists of cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing the skin. If you go into Boots and get a free skin care consultation they can point out for you what skin care products are best for your skin type and how to use them effectively to get the best results. Of course with the various different skin care providers they all have anti-aging and eye creams which were introduced in 1999.
Why did I buy this product?
Ok I didn't "buy" this mascara so to speak - I had one free in a cosmopolitan magazine and another one free in a Clinique bonus time freebie (of course sample sizes) but I always find that there's a mascara that doesn't quite do it for me like they could make my eyelashes too thick or the liquid could be too gloopy or hard... Or I'm just a serial complainer I'll let you decide.
Clinique High Impact Mascara
As a first Impression the tube is a very dark green (almost black) and looks slightly glittery/metallic with silver writing with Clinique and High Impact Mascara. The freebies I had are just 3g each and the ones that you can buy from a Clinique counter or the Clinique website are 8g (that's for the full sized product). The wand is long and the brush is thin compared to others that I have used before. The brush is brissly like the old victorian hairbrushes (or like the toilet cleaning brush) which I like but I do atually prefer the plastic comb. The end of the wand is thin and there's no curve or bend which is a bit of a downfall for me. After inspecting the look I'll admit I was a little disappointed as the full sized mascara is £16 and to me that's a bit steap for a little bit of mascara where my preference just isn't there (after all you'd expect a little more than that really) so I decided to try the mascara out once I'd finished off my other mascara.
Now Clinique say that this mascara is "High Impact Mascara is a multi-benefit mascara that adds maximum volume with definition and length. Specially developed brush and formula work together to dramatically thicken lashes while separating." Thinking about that statement I actually agree to an extent as it does thicken my eyelashes that's the first thing I notice when I put this mascara on and it does definitely add length but I can't say that it separates my eyelashes as they can stick together a little bit in the corners. On the other hand saying that whenever I do use this product my eyelashes are spread more than when I've used other brands of mascara which is a much better result of course. Clinique also say that the benefits of this product is "thickening" which I do agree with - it wont give you an over exaggerative thickening of the eyelashes but it will definitely help to make them look thicker but if you want

them to look really thick then this product really wont do it and I would say that this product is best off for when you want a more natural look (although you can get a really good natural look for free by not wearing make-up!)
Overall though thinking about the product and what it gives I do agree that it's thickening (but not massively thickening) and that it does add length I wont say it spreads ALL of your lashes as you still get some stuck together but I do think it's a good product. However, you can only purchase two colours which are Black or Brown/Black which is a bit limitting really and I would have liked to see different coloured mascaras being sold even though I don't personally wear them myself - I just think that small varieties should be available if I did want to go out with electric blue mascara or bright pink - I just think the variety is very limitted although that's being very picky as I wouldn't wear any other colour than black.Of course there are other mascaras that Clinique do to give you different benefits and these are;
High Lengths Mascara
Lash Power Mascara Long-Wearing Formula
Lash Doubling Mascara
Naturally Glossy Mascara
Lash Building Primer
Bottom Lash Mascara
High Impact Curling Mascara
Using the mascara
So I did run out of my soap and glory mascara and I decided to start using my Clinique sample ones. So after applying the foundation I started to brush on the mascara and my eyelashes thickened up instantly as well as the length. My eyelashes were a little stuck together on the inner and outter corners but they were evenly spread throughout the majority and middle section which was nice and it gives me more of a natural look (almost as if I'm not wearing mascara - until I pile on more of course).
I'm actually quite impressed with the result although I do think that with every other product I've reviewed that there is definitely room for improvement and I would say that the shape of the brush would be a start as it's a bit awkward to get the roots of my eyelashes and they can sometimes go without mascara so a curved brush would be a winner really but other then that there's no other improvements that I could think of without being extremely picky like wanting the tube to be pink or something petty. Another thing that impressed me about this is the length of time it's taken me to use just one mascara. As I keep a make-up bag in my handbag for those emergencies (crying in the cinema over dumbledore dying or the monthly warning which ladies will know what I'm talking about) and I noticed that each tube lasts around five weeks which is pretty good for 3g whereas I was buying a new mascara every five weeks at 7g so I really was pleased with this so as a rough estimate I would say that a full sized tube would last for around three months which is still good even if the price is a bit too high.
As I stated the mascara gives me length and it gives me thickness although I do advise that anybody who does want really thick eyelashes needs to either apply several coats of mascara or add powder or even find one that has given them the really thick eyelash result because this will give you more of a naturally thick looking result - naturally thick on your eyelashes of course though. I like how this mascara gives you a more natural length instead of one that can make you look a little ridiculous or question what length was supposed to be added.
When the big question comes up as "is the mascara waterproof?" I'm not entirely sure whether it even matters anymore as I find that if the mascara is waterproof then that's great but it's a b*tch to get off when you're trying to remove your make-up and can make you start to pull out your eyelashes whereas if it's not waterproof and it rains - you'll look like a panda crossed with a drowned rat if Mr. Umbrella isn't about. This is actually another thing that I do like about this mascara though as it is waterproof but you can at least remove it although I noticed that with my Rimmel London eye make-up remover it doesn't come off too easily but it comes off marvelously with the Clinique make-up remover... I wonder why.
Did this irritate my eyes?
No, this mascara did not irritate my eyes although this doesn't mean to say that the product wouldn't irritate your eyes and my suggestion is that you test the product before you buy if able (a consultant at the boots clinique counter should be able to do this for you) and if it does irritate your eyes then do not use this product.
Warnings and suitability
Unfortunately, Clinique have failed to give any warnings or suitabilities for this product and it's something I would have liked to see although it's more or less common sense that you shouldn't consume the product (eat) and if the product irritates you then simply discontinue using the product and consult your doctor then maybe sell the product on ebay (although as a warning any used eye make-up products that are being sold on eBay that are used are unhygenic as that's how you can get eye infections).
I think that this product is suitable for most people and as it's tested for even the most sensitive eyes I would say that nobody should find this product in the slightest bit irritating. I myself did not find this irritating and I do have sensitive eyes but I would always recommend that you look at the ingredients and make sure that you aren't allergic to anything and if you are then do not use the product and if you do notice any irritations then stop using the products and go to your GP for recommendations and perhaps stop wearing eye makeup for a couple of days to help prevent further irriation.
My tips on;
*Your pillow is full of germs - think about it - you sleep for around six to eight hours on your pillow and how often do you change your pillow? It's not necessarily the case either so you may want to wash both the pillow and the case as you will actually get germs from your pillow which will clog up your pores and create spots.
*Another thing is your phone, have you ever been on the phone and then noticed a bit of make-up on the phone? If you have then imagine what else is on your phone besides make-up. You touch your phone with you fingers and whether you realise there are germs/dirt or not you will leave bits of dirt and then somebody rings and you put the phone to your ear and the dirt is then pressed onto your face. If you notice spots more so on one side of your face then this could be why. Wipe your phone over before you make a call to help reduce this.
*Finally - be healthy and happy. If you eat seven takeaways a week and you drink loads of fizzy drinks not only will you be packing more pounds than the bank but it'll show in your skin, hair and nails. Nails will chip easily, hair will break easily and become greasier and so will your skin therefore promoting blemishes. Make sure you eat your veg and better still drink plenty of water. You'll feel happier too.
*If you want thicker eyelashes then you don't need to keep applying mascara - if you get an old eye shadow that you don't use and brush them over your eyelashes this will actually help to build up your eyelashes so when you do put the mascara on - it'll look much thicker instantly and wont be costly to you (or you could get eyelash extensions.
*If you make a mistake don't go and buy the garnier correction pen it's much cheaper to get a bit of tissue or the edge of a sponge and remove it gently with some of your make-up remover - it's effectively the same thing only it wont cost you around the £5 mark.
*When you apply eye shadow remember that when you sweep you're getting a thin colour so if you want it to be more obvious then pat the eyeshadow onto your eyelid gently and be careful not to pat too hard.
*If you want to make your eyes look a little brighter then apply a white eyeliner in the corners of your eyes - this will help to make them look a little whiter.
*If you want a thin line of eyeliner then find a good liquid eyeliner with a thin applicator and brush along the eyelashes - think of when you draw a straight line down the center of a book using one side to make that straight line, it's the same technique and can be done to make a thin or a thick line.
Value for money
In comparison to brands such as Rimmel, Mac and Max Factor this is more or less £10 more costly which in hind sight could pay for you to go to the cinema and get a bag of sweets (back in the day it would have paid for a drink as well but now prices are just extortionate). Usually I wouldn't spend this much but as I like the brand I actually would not but saying that eBay sells most things at a very discounted rate and unless there's a good promotion on at boots at the Clinique counter like bonus time and then £5 additional on the Boots card then it's better to buy the product off of eBay which you'll find that 3g of this mascara is £2.99 and the full size (8g) for around £10 which is a bit lighter on the pocket. I think that at £16 though it isn't badly priced as I said this mascara as lasted me three times as long as any other brand I've used so to me at around £5.33 a month it works out around the same as what you'd spend on brands such as Rimmel and Maybelline so I wouldn't say no to paying £16 but I would try and get the mascara cheaper in the first place.
I'm going to rate this mascara four out of five stars simply because I think that there could be a better variation of colour, the brush doesn't get all of my eyelashes to the roots too easily making things slightly awkward and there's no warning at all for the product. The positives about this product is that it will give you thicker, longer lashes that look more natural than some other mascara brands out there although I wouldn't say it's the best and I have used better mascaras before but I like this one as it helps to give me the best natural look. I would still recommend this to a friend as I do think that it's a good product and a good mascara but I would also recommend buying this off of eBay.
I first tried this mascara in a Clinique 'bonus time' gift set. For those of you who have never heard of 'bonus time', it's an offer that Clinque do every so often where you receieve a free gift set upon purchasing two or more items. I think it's a nice idea, at least you get something back every so often and also it's a nice opportunity to try new products you maybe wouldn't go for normally. Clinique is widely available in all department stores, most Boots stores and also online.
* a multi-benefit mascara that adds maximum volume with definition and length.
* Specially developed brush and formula work together to dramatically thicken lashes while separating
This is a good mascara, nothing more...nothing less. The wand is a pretty standard shape, maybe a little on the large side. It lasts well and doesn't flake off which is good. It improves the thickness and length of the lashes. It's easy to apply to both the upper and lower lashes. It is availabe in two shades: black and black brown. The packaging is very simple, black with silver writing. My biggest critism with this mascara is sometimes I found it went on quite clumpy which is massive no-no with a mascara.
HOW TO USE:
* Apply to lashes: start at the base of the lash and brush up to the tip.
* Repeat to build.
VALUE FOR MONEY:
For an 8g tube the price is £16.00 and it lasts a fair amount of time but I guess the most important question is would I repurchase it? The answer is probably not, although I don't feel it's a bad product I just feel there are better products on the market that are cheaper.
I first received this mascara in a sample size with one of clinique's 'bonus time' gift sets as I regularly use their skincare products. Normally it would be out of my price range as a mascara isn't something I would spend too much on, but after trying the free sample I was so impressed I now own the full size version!
The packaging is very sleek - a black tube with product details written on the side and a black lid which unscrews to reveal the applicator. I prefer a thick mascara brush so I was very please to see that this was nice and thick with plenty of bristles. The brush was very soft and easy to use - it added a nice amount of volume, coated all my eyelashes evenly and there was no clumping or sticking together of eyelashes. It was also surpisingly easy to reach the corner eyelashes with such a thick brush.
The colour that I received in the sample was black (there is a black brown available) which gave a great finish - it enhanced my eyes and did make my eyelashes look thicker. I have also tried the newer shade of brightening black which claims to enhance the eyes more, but I can't really see a huge difference between this and the original black.
I wasn't expecting much in terms of staying power - this mascara makes no promises to be smudgeproof or waterproof but I was pleasantly surprised. There was no smudging or flaking and even an emotional evening barely moved the mascara - I expected panda eyes but was left with no such thing! The only thing that really seems to make the mascara smudge is washing your face or getting caught in a heavy downpour. However, it was incredibly easy to remove. I initially used clinique own eye make up remover (another freebie) which got rid of all traces very quickly, but even using a cheaper eye make up remover did the trick very well.
This is a product i will continue to use (and clinique regularly have it as a freebie in their bonus time gifts!) and I think it is worth the premium price. I tend not to wear mascara every day so this product lasts me a long time. However, if you were a more frequent user it will still probably last 6 months (by which time it is hygienic to throw it away anyway). It may be at the higher end of the price scale, but it is a great buy.
* PRODUCT DETAILS *
I do love a bargain. I was therefore delighted to discover that a recent copy of a glossy magazine was giving away some freebies with each copy of their magazine. As the freebies were from the "Clinique" cosmetics range, which is a range I really like, I decided to purchase a few assorted copies of the magazine to take full advantage of the small selection of cosmetics on offer.
One of the freebies at this time was a small, 3.5ml tube of Clinique Mascara. I believe there was only one colour or shade choice available at the time, which was a dark black shade. Even though the Clinique brand contains an assortment of mascara products, I believe there was only one option supplied with the magazine, which was the "Clinique High Impact Mascara."
The small tube of Clinique Mascara is not available to purchase separately, although I do believe that I have had similar sized products as free gifts from the Clinique brand when making a large purchase in-store. The full sized version of the product is available to purchase from a variety of retailers such as Boots and House of Fraser. Prices vary, but appear to be in the region of £15 - £17 pounds. The mascara can also be bought online from retailers such as Boots (www.boots.com) where the current price is £16 plus postage costs, although a quick online search shows the mascara is available at a slightly cheaper price from discount retailers such as www.cheapsmells.com, where it is available for £13.45 with free delivery.
* MY EXPERIENCE *
The packaging for the product is quite attractive I suppose, although I couldn't confess to thinking it was at all innovative or offered anything particularly eye-catching. The plain black tube and shiny 'chrome' effect lid are actually rather cheap looking in my opinion, although I am more concerned with how a product actually performs, rather than the packaging it is provided in. I couldn't honestly say that the product would have caught my eye from the display in the shop which is quite surprising, considering the price of the product, which I consider to be higher than average for a mascara product.
Removing the wand from the tube, I can see that the wand is quite thick at its head, although not overly so which would perhaps make the wand overly heavy at one end or make it awkward to use. I was pleased to note the head's slightly large size, given the product is designed to provide "High Impact" to the eyelashes. In my experience, those mascaras with thinly-shaped heads on their wands are rubbish when trying to achieve this effect.
Whilst I am on the subject of the mascara's wand, I found that the larger-than-average brush head provided here was not overly fiddly for me to use, and I didn't experience any problems with smudging or anything which is a huge plus point of course. I have to be honest, however and admit that my eyelashes are very dark and quite long naturally, so I felt they were able to cope with the larger-than-average brush head quite easily. I could quite understand if somebody with short or very fine lashes found this brush more difficult or slightly cumbersome to use as a result of the large head and the wand's length being shorter than usual, given the product is a 'trial size' version of the real thing. I had no such problem however, so I won't be deducting any points from the product rating for this.
I found the Clinique mascara had a rather strong smell, which I confess I found quite off-putting at first. The previous mascara I had been using prior to this one had absolutely no smell that I could detect, so perhaps this is why I found the Clinique product's aroma to be so noticeable. I found the smell to be extremely clinical and really rather unpleasant, but thankfully it disappeared altogether once the application process was complete, so I could live with it at least.
The High Impact Mascara is completely jet black in its colour and I noticed it to be very 'glossy' with a noticeably high shine to its liquid. It looked to be quite thick, and certainly it didn't drip from the applicator wand prior to use.
I thought too that the High Impact Mascara was rather easy to apply, with one or two coats being more than sufficient for me to coat my long lashes with an ample amount of the glossy liquid. This provided full coverage to the lashes and I found the indentations in the wand's head coped excellently at meeting all the lashes framing my eye, with perhaps only one or two at the outer corners being missed out and requiring a further coat, mainly due to their location rather than the product itself. I noticed no annoying 'clumping' from the mascara, and this was the case too if I opted to apply a second coat which I often do.
The end results were impressive enough, although somewhat unremarkable, but that is not to say I was not happy with the results achieved. To explain, I felt that the Clinique mascara provided full coverage to my lashes, and I found the process of application was rather quick and easy to undertake, providing a 'fuss-free' method that suited me down to the ground. I felt too that the mascara's brush was of a high quality and I liked the design, as I touched on earlier.
The liquid mascara fared well too, providing full, glossy-looking coverage to my dark lashes that I did appreciate, without causing any unsightly smudging or dripping which made the liquid feel like one of high quality. In addition, I found that the mascara did not rub off or run with too much haste; albeit, it's not waterproof in any way, but it didn't budge too easily either - so, perfect for me and my own requirements.
The downside to the results achieved are that I felt the end result was far from being "High Impact" and this led me to feel disappointed. Instead of this effect, I felt my lashes - whilst certainly covered to perfection - had a similar end result being much less noticeable than one of 'High Impact.' In fact, if the product had not had it's High Impact name, I would have assumed it was an 'everyday' mascara product rather than being something aimed at providing any sort of dramatic or intense effect.
To summarise these findings a little better, I am happy with the results achieved from using the Clinique High Impact Mascara, but only for everyday wear, or for less formal occasions. For a more dramatic or 'intense' look, I opt to use a different product entirely as this Clinique offering just doesn't deliver on this score - well, certainly not enough to achieve my own desired effect. So, if you are thinking of purchasing it on this basis my advice would be to steer clear, and this goes for anybody with short or fine natural lashes too as I just don't think the product is suitable for creating this type of effect.
As with all products in the Clinique range that I have tried out before, I have experienced no issues in terms of sensitivity or aggravation to the sensitive eye area which has led me to the conclusion that the product actually contains quite a mild, gentle formulation.
Additionally, I have had no difficulty in removing the product along with the rest of my facial make-up, finding a moist facial wipe or some everyday make-up remover are more than adequate to remove all traces from my skin.
In summary, I am happy enough with my freebie tube of the product and think it provides a nice effect for everyday use. I didn't feel the product lived up to its claims however, so one star removed from the product rating for that. I can't confess to being blown away by the Clinique High Impact Mascara which is a bit of a shame as I had high expectations for the product.
~Add impact with Clinique~
I was lucky enough to have been given a well sized sample of this High Impact Mascara from the Clinique range a short while ago, after a very helpful consultation with the Clinique consultant in a large retail store. I was advised at the time that this particular mascara may suit my needs as I wanted a nice full look well defined, with no clogging once in place.
As I tend to prefer the old school style applicator brushes that are fitted to some mascara products, this product was again the most suited to my needs according to the consultant I spoke with, as it featured a nice full bristle type wand style applicator.
I had a choice of 2 mascara colours at the time and after having tried both colour options (one colour on each set of eye lashes) I opted for the black shaded version of the product, as I felt it would be more versatile when in wear. I did sample and compare the other option offered, which was a black brown shade, although when I sampled this in store (using a disposable applicator offered by the consultant) the effect was no where near as crisp or dramatic as I wanted. I compared the brown/ black lash effect to the sleeker effect that the black coloured version of the High Impact Mascara had in store and found that I liked that far more.
~Using the product~
In use I have found this mascara product easy and quick to use as the applicator wand works as it should, allowing me to get a nice even coverage on my eye lashes that does give a nice light yet wide eyed effect when applied correctly. The small and compact product container that my mascara came in is around 2/3 of the size of the full product, as it contains a little less of the full sized 8gm product. However the applicator brush remains the same as that used in the full sized product, using the same soft, well spaced bristles to give a wide eyed yet not too heavy and flaky looking finish once on the lashes.
The applicator wand is a little shorter in length than usual, as it corresponds to the length of the product tube, although I have not found this to be an issue in use as the mascara is just as easy to apply as the full sized Clinique mascara products I have bought in the past. The lid of the product container doubles as a handle for the applicator brush, which is I find to be pretty standard with these types of product and I have found that it works well enough in this respect. The applicator wand slides back in place after use and the lid is easily tightened to give a secure closure that keeps the mascara protected after use and stops it from drying out.
The texture of the actual product is neither too thick and clumpy, nor too thin and runny, as it gives a nice, even looking, well defined end result in my opinion. I have found that by following the Clinique consultants advice about wigging the applicator brush a little to remove any excess product from the brush when removing it from the container (prior to use), rather than rotating the applicator wand in the product tube, has worked well when using this mascara. I have been generally pleased with the looks I have achieved when using this mascara, as it gives a nice highlighted look to the eye area without looking or feeling overly heavy.
~Price and product rating~
The cost of the full sized product is around £16 which I feel offers fair value for money as a single 8gm tube of the product should last quite some time. The mascara does manage to define the eyes quite well in my opinion and it stays in place for a full day without the need for a top up if applied with care. I would consider buying this product in future as I have enjoyed using it and I feel it compares well with the other mascara products I have used in the past. My rating for the product is 4 stars based ease of use, results and price.
Make-up is a girl's best friend and we all seem to be on the endless quest to find a perfect mascara. Applying eye make-up is an easy way to enhance your look and there is a style that will suit everybody but the key ingredient that everyone needs to finish off their eye look is always a good black mascara. I managed to snag a travel size tube of this Clinique High Impact Mascara when it was offered as a freebie with Glamour magazine. This costs £16.00 for an 8g tube and I have a smaller 3.5g version.
Product description: "High Impact Mascara is a multi-benefit mascara that adds maximum volume with definition and length. Specially developed brush and formula work together to dramatically thicken lashes while separating."
This mascara comes in two different shades - either black or black/brown. I have this in black which is good for me because I like my lashes to look dark as this helps them to look more prominent, and it also suits my naturally dark hair colour. It comes in a standard plastic tube with a long wand inside. The brush end is well covered with lots of evenly spaced bristles.
The mascara brush is quite full and the numerous bristles allows you to reach in and apply the mascara evenly to each eyelash as well as combing them through during the application to avoid any sticking and clumping. When I use this mascara I tend to apply two coats to my upper lashes, and one coat to my lower lashes. This gives a really striking look that opens my eyes for a pretty wide-eyed appearance. If i want to go for a more retro look I apply extra mascara to the outer edge of my upper lashes for a cat's eye sort of style. The mascara looks really elegant, adding shape and length to my lashes. It really defines my eyelashes and gives a full look which is just as suitable for a natural day to day look as it is for a more polished evening look. The only thing I'd say it doesn't do is give a boosted thickening effect. Even so, I think it really enhances my eyes and gives me a feminine flirty edge. The effect lasts all day long, and my lashes stay looking just as neat and groomed by the end of the day as they did when I first put it on. It does not dry out my lashes, nor does it go flaky, run or smudge onto my skin. I've been caught out in the rain when wearing this mascara and even though it's not waterproof it still stayed in place perfectly despite the soaking.
This High Impact mascara gives a perfect finish which I think looks absolutely beautiful. I am always really happy with the way that my eyes look after I've applied this as it's always flawless and reliable. I would definitely go out and buy the full size and can happily recommend it to anyone.
I've been using the mascara for over five years now, since I thankfully moved onto the more premium brands after my teenage years. My first tube I received as a gift and I have been a convert ever since, having had a 'difficult' relationship with mascara in the past - more later.
The packaging: This mascara comes nicely packaged in clinique's classic floral packaging which brands all their make up range. The tube is plain black with silver writing and the clinique branding included - I think it looks premium and fits in with my other make up packaging - however some other clinique mascaras are in a far nicer silver tube and it would have been nice if they had changed the entire range to look like this.
The product: In summary the mascara is very easy to apply.
I have a bit of an unusual issue with mascara - I have extremely long, natural eyelashes combined with needing to wear glasses - If I wear some of the more heavy duty ones, they seem to make my lashes clump together and extend them too much so they brush off my glasses which is fairly unpleasant (I think this achieves not the 'wide-eyed' lusted after look, but rather a bit of a too big eyed wild spidery look - Not good). I've tried cheaper alternatives and they always irritates my eyes, especially if I use my contact lenses.
Using this mascara eliminates these issues.
The brush is good quality with lots of bristles, to catch all the little lashes in the corners. The actual liquid is a nice consistency, not runny, but also so thick to cause clumping issues. It only takes me about 20 seconds to apply each morning, in any colour as long as it is black (It is also available in brown, but I cannot comment on this colour).
Overall this gives my lashes a well defined, but thickened, healthy look, perfect for the office as it is not over the top, yet good enough to at least make me look awake! I should also mention I would never consider adding to my morning routine so using a mascara brush after application is not an option.
My morning application lasts all day and I have never needed to use more than one coat, whilst I often head out after work to see friends.
Even when I have a tube open for a couple of months it doesn't seem to dry out, therefore no clumping issues here either.
Price: About £16 for 8g.
So is it good value for money? I should add here that I use a lot of products from the Clinique range, therefore get a lot of the bonus time gift sets and they almost always contain this as a sample size (a good sample at 4g - half what you get in the full size), as a result over the five years I have probably only needed to buy the actual full size for myself about five times! Yoohoo! Would it bother me to hand over £16 each time I needed a new mascara? Not at all this is a great product and I fully recommend it if like me you don't want anything too over the top but still want to look groomed.
My tip if you do want to try - try get a sample size one on ebay, you can get it for about £4 for 4g, so costs less per g than on the Highstreet.
Like many others on here I got this mascara free with Glamour magazines having a few mascaras on the go at the time I decided I'd leave it for a later date to try out. I'd been looking forward to using it though having a friend who kept saying Clinique make the best mascaras ever.
When I opened it the brush was fairly normal, not overly big and nothing overly special, it looked nice and bristly though. It also didn't smell too chemical so I didn't think twice about putting it near my eyes. I did find it a little uncomfortable to apply but this was only because it is a sample size and so the brush is very close to the lid to hold which made it a little difficult to use. I managed but it will definitely be easier using the full size product.
The effect it gave me eyelashes was thick and eye opening without clumping or sticking all my lashes together and looking all spidery. It lengthened and curled my lashes too so I able to achieve the High Impact look I was promised. I tried it out on my bottom lashes too, I don't usually wear mascara here because I find they look thick and creepy, but it subtly made me eyes even bigger without being too spidery again plus it didn't go all smudgey later in the day. I also found it easy to remove too and I just use shops own brand babywipes!
Overall I am very satisfied with this mascara and plan to buy a full sized tube when I run out. I am aware that Clinique are very expensive, I think the mascara is about £14 however I am happy to pay this as I use mascara everyday so it will be worth it plus the mascara I am currently using is about £22! (YSL)
In general I am a really big fan of everything clinique. Since I was a teen I have had really oily skin and am prone to breakouts and find that clinique's products are the only ones that really help. So naturally, when I got really into make-up, although expensive, clinique's products seemed liked the natural step as I at least know I have no funny reactions. I am always excited about new products from clinique and try out most things, however as far as mascara goes this is most definitely my one and only.
At first, in comparison to off the shelf mascaras, this is an expensive option. However for me, I am quite prepared to pay for a better product. At £16 for a full size tube it is at the higher end. Clinique though often has 'bonus time' events at some store or another. This is where if you buy two products, or sometimes spend a minimum (depends on the store) you get a free gift. The gift usually includes a make-up bag and about half a dozen sample products of skin care and make up, and usually a half size tube of this mascara is included. So, if you are like me and buy clinique products anyway, it is worth looking for bonus times, as it can end up saving you a bit of money on some products as you get them free. Try Debenhams, Boots, Selfridges etc, but even times are always shown on Clinique's web site.
Anyhow, about the mascara! There are two colours available, black and black-brown. The samples are always black and I have never tried the black-brown so can't comment. I love the black though. I am fair with pale skin and blue eyes but don't find the black too strong. Having said that, I don't wear heavy eye make-up or falsies so prefer to go for a high impact mascara. Even when I'm having a non-makeup day (which is rare in all fairness) I still don't leave the house without a coat of the mascara.
The wand is wide and the bristles are full and long capturing plenty of the mascara on it, but of course as the tube narrows at the top, any excess is removed so I have never had a problem with clumps. Usually two sweeps do it for me on the top lashes, starting at the bottom next to the lid and giving a bit of a wiggle up towards the tips. But on the bottom I just lightly wave the wand past them sideways so it isn't too heavy. Of course the more impact you want, the more layers etc.
I would definitely recommend this mascara, and would be surprised if you don't love it as much as I do!
Anyone who has ever read any of my mascara reviews will know Im on the search for the perfect one. A mascara that does everything - gives length and volume without looking clumpy - and one that can transform my eyes for a night out but also give me a natural daytime look as well. Alas it seems thats an impossible search as I never seem to be totally won over by any mascara Ive ever tried and that means I try a LOT of brands in my never ending search. This 'Clinique High Impact Mascara' was the latest addtion to my make-up kit and I have to admit it wouldnt have been a brand Id have picked myself to try - but I can never resist testing out a freebie and this particular one came with my Glamour magazine a few months back. I have to say I think the search for the perfect mascara might finally be over - I have been VERY impressed with this little beauty!!
Price: Around £16 - so not the cheapest mascara by a long shot!
Stockists: Clinique products are mainly sold in places like Debenhams & House of Fraser - they do also have a website clinique.co.uk - I guess that might be slightly cheaper than buying it in store! As I mentioned I got mine as a freebie so Im not 100% certain on that!!
Shades: This mascara comes in shades Black (the one I own) & Black/Brown.
Other Info: Promises to add maximum volume as well as giving your lashes definition and length - what more could a girl ask for?!
Packaging wise this is just simple and mini sized in my case - one thing I really liked about it as Im planning on taking it on holiday, although if you buy this in store I guess the tube would be larger. The packaging is darkgreen/black in colour and the information is printed in silver so no-one should have any problems reading all thats printed on there. As usual the information avout the product is printed all over the tube - cautions, shelf life (6M) and the brand and product shade - there are no ingredients on my tube (perhaps because I have the mini one) and although thats personally not an issue it might effect people who ahve allergies to ingredients found in this type of product. Opening is the same as normal, simply unscrew the top to reveal the brush attached ti the lid inside - nothing out of the ordinary there. Simple packaging and despite its mini size very effective for me - its still as easy to hold and use as regular sized tubes.
Im pleased to say the brush for this mascara is ... TOTALLY NORMAL! I have a problem when brands release mascaras with fancy shaped brushes that are designed to do all sorts and then 9 times out of 10 fail to deliver. Im much happier whenthe brush is just straight and the bristles are average - which is the case with this one. As the brush shape is so normal it makes applying it much easier for me as it seems to fit the natural shape of my lashes really well - and because its straight I can get to the pesky bottom and corner lashes with ease without smudging the mascara all over my face like Ive tended to do with other brands! Also the standard brush shape ensures just the right amount of liquid is picked up each time you use this meaning your not left waiting forever for your eyelashes to dry before you can go out or end up pumping the brush a million times because it feels so dry. The brush shape and ease of application is always a big bonus for me and this one definitely covers everything I wanted in that respect!
Im even more pleased to report that the end result on my eyelashes also looks fanastic - even if I do say so myself! Ive been looking for so long for a mascara that will work for both day and night looks - in the day for work when I want something a bit more natural and at night when I want something really striking. And I think I might have finally found the answer in this one! One coat of this in the morning for work just creates a wide eyed look - even on about 3 hours sleep after a cheeky drink the night before and two coats really makes my eyes look more dramatic and dark for the night when Im out partying once again hehe. This mascara I would say makes my lashes look darker and thicker than any other Ive ever tried before - it gives me a really dark, dramatic look without leaving behind any clumps or making me look too over the top. It also makes my lashes look at least twice as long as they do without mascara - people have even started asking me if I wear false eyelahes all the time because the difference is that noticable. Even I can see that this makes the world of difference to any look Im going for as it even makes me look more wide eyed and fresh - and even though Ive been alternating this with a few other brands Ive been trying out this one has remained one I will go back and use time and time again.
I genuinely cannot think of a single bad thing to say about this mascara - its easy to apply, looks great on, can be used in the day or at night, makes my lashes look thicker than ever and longer as an added bonus ... oh and its also easy to remove, a few quick wipes with a baby wipe and this is totally gone. Dont take that to mean that the look isnt long lasting though as Ive never had any problem with this clumping or flaking off my lashes throughout the day so its very hard wearing! I cannot recommend this highly enough as its probably the best mascara Ive ever tried and I'll 100000% be going back for more when my freebie tube runs out, I recommend all you ladies out there give this a go as well! 5*s from me because for once ... I have no critisms!
Thanks For Reading.

As anyone who has read any of my previous reviews will know I am a big fan of Clinique, so when a magazine was offering this mascara free with the purchase, I decided I had to try it. I am normally a fan of the 'Lash Power' mascara by Clinique, so was wondering how well this mascara would compare and whether it would convert me to buying this one in the future.
~~What is it?~~
This mascara was designed by Clinique to add volume, alongside definition and length. Therefore it is there sort of 'multi purpose' that claims to do everything, whereas some of their other mascaras are specially designed to add length, etc.
~~Price and Availability~~
This item costs £16 for an 8g tube, which although is a little more than what I would normally spend on a mascara, I also don't think it is too expensive, considering some of their mascaras cost £22!
You can purchase Clinique in most large department stores, such as Debenhams, Hourse of Fraser and others. Along with these shops you can also purchase Clinique at selected Boots stores (and there online store) along with the Clinique online store- where they often have offers on.
This mascara is currently available in two colours; black and black brown. They also have a limited edition one called 'Brightening Black', which personally I cannot see how this will be any difference to the black version, though they all cost the same price. There is also a high impact curling mascara available too.
~~The brush/ bristles~~
The brush itself is quite normal in size, by this I mean it is not a very short brush, or a long one and neither is it very slim or have any curves in it in order to achieve different effects. The bristles are all quite closely packed in and it looks quite dense as the bristles are quite thick. The bristles are not very flexible and tend to stay in place, therefore are quite sturdy.
~~Applying the mascara~~
I actually found this mascara very easy to apply, even on the first application, which I sometimes a little bit difficult when getting used to the brush. To apply the mascara felt very glossy and was very smooth to apply through the eyelashes, in no way did it feel flakey or brittle. I could see that the mascara had the glossy black sheen to it when applying, opposed to the matte black, which I prefer.
When applying I could see that it was easy to reach all my eyelashes and was also capturing the very inner and outer eyelashes, which are sometimes a little harder to reach. It took one to two coats before I thought that the mascara looked good and had managed to cover all my eyelashes easily.
I was really pleased with the results of this mascara. It had managed to do al the things it had claimed to do; lengthen, define and add volume. My eyelashes looked really thick and black, yet were not at all spidery due to the fact that individual eyelashes had been defined, rather than them all clumping together.
The mascara dried with the glossy sheen to it, rather than drying the matte black which some other mascaras do, which can then make the mascara look a little brittle/ flakey. Though I really liked this mascara, I think the fact that it was a multi purpose mascara, meant that it did not perform as well at lengthening as a lengthening mascara would and the same applied to that of defining and volume. Nonetheless, as a multi purpose product it did do all these things well and if you wanted to do all of the following, opposed to something more particular then I think this could be the one for you.
The mascara stayed in place all day without flaking or becoming brittle, which I was also really pleased with and I think this is mainly due to the glossy finish of the mascara. It did also not begin to smudge in areas, though if I did make a mistake whilst applying and smudged it a little, I found it very easy to remove and it did not create a big black mess.
I did like this mascara. It was very easy to apply, due to the size and shape of the brush, meaning there was no difficulty in getting to the inner or outer lashes. It was also comfortable to hold, which is also enabled applying the mascara to be easier.
I really liked the results, which I think is mainly due to the dark, glossy finish that the mascara had. The fact that it also stayed in place all day was also a plus as it meant there was no need to reapply or worry about the mascara flaking or becoming brittle.
The fact that it wasn't too expensive, also made the mascara seem much better value for money as for a multi purpose product it was of very good quality. Though, I am not really a fan of multi purpose products, I liked this one as often I find the quality to be poor on a product that claims to do more than one thing, though this mascara did deliver and was able to do each of the things it claimed to do.
It also was able to curl my eyelashes a little, though it had not claimed to do this, which allowed the mascara to give me the more wide eyed and opened to look, which I also really loved.
-Easy to use
-Lovely glossy finish
-Not too pricey
-Mine was free!
-Lengthens, defines and adds volume
-Not as good as mascaras that are specialised in one area- for example lengthening
-May be a little expensive for some.
On the whole, I did like this mascara, it worked well and stayed in place all day, whilst making my eyelashes look lovely thick, dark and long. I don't think I am converted to this mascara and am still a big fan of the Lash Power one as I love the lengthening abilities of that mascara, nonetheless I would recommend this mascara if someone wanted a mulit purpose, all round mascara that lasts all day!
I buy a lot of mascaras, I usually have 15-20 on the go at once. I like to try anything new that comes out and am willing to splash out a bit extra for a more expensive brand too.
I received the Clinique High Impact Mascara as a gift for Christmas and was thrilled because it was one of their mascaras that I had yet to try. The reason I have so many mascaras is I find they are all good for different things (volume, length, separation etc.) but none are good enough to do all these jobs. I probably use 1/2 in the daytime and if I go out for the evening I can use anything up to 5 in one go to get the desired look. This mascara appealed to me because it is described as 'high impact' - so I thought it probably had a better shot at achievement what I look for in a mascara.
I really like the packaging - it comes in a box decorated with light pastel colours which is very pretty and feminine. The tube itself is a very dark green muted and yet shiny plastic. It has a silver metal lid which twists off and a cylindrical bristle brush. These are the kinds of brushes I prefer - having used plastic comb mascara brushes and found them to be positively awful I prefer to stick to a bristle brush. The brush on this mascara is not too large, is the length of a normal set of eyelashes and holds a decent amount of mascara on it to achieve an even coating on the first go.
I found this mascara very easy to apply, it goes on smoothly with no lumps or clumps leaving your eyelashes coated but not smothered. The mascara is a lovely dark black colour - but you can also buy it in brown/black and brightening black too. It gave great coverage of my lashes, extended them a reasonable amount and did improve the volume. I wouldn't exactly say it was high impact, it is a good mascara with even coverage that is best suited to a day look to be honest. That said, I'm not exactly disappointed because it has many other good points to it.
The smell of the mascara is fairly pleasant - not particularly chemical, it almost has a strange smell like almonds but whether that is deliberate or not I can't be sure. I have found that the mascara lasts for a long time, although I have others that I used I do tend to put this one on once or twice a week. I then used another mascara over the top to give me extra length, unlike other mascaras this one is very good at separating the lashes and I rarely need a comb brush to do this as well. I have had this mascara since Christmas and it has yet to dry or run out. I still find the mascara very fresh looking when applied and it has maintained its wetness well. I often find with more expensive mascaras that if you use them in addition to others they become quite quickly tainted by contact with other formulas and dry out very quickly. As someone who likes to use several mascaras this is not ideal, but this clinique mascara seems to have coped well with contact with other mascaras.
I think the price is where it falls down for me. At £16 for 8g it is just a little bit too expensive for me to repurchase. I would love to receive it as a gift again, and would certainly consider buying it for other people as the brand and the mascara have a sense of quality and richness about them. If this mascara was on offer, or had a price more around the £10 I probably would spend the extra money on this one more regularly - but as a day mascara rather than high impact as it is described.
Overall, a nice mascara but not something I would pay for.
I am not one for makeup but one product I am addicted to and I have so many mascaras I have lost count. After success with other Clinique products when I came across this high impact mascara I could not resist.
This comes like most mascaras in a twist of lid top which has the arm of the mascara attached. I was surprised as usually mascaras that offer to lengthen have big bristles that are wide apart but this one is not too big which is great for me as I tend to smudge my eyes on application with bigger brushes. Also they are not too far apart and all lined up in a neat row.
For £16 you receive an 8ml tube of mascara that is not too large in size and sits comfortably in your hand. You can purchase in 2 shades black and a black/brown colour.
When you take the mascara brush out of the tube you notice straight away the product is hardly visible you do not need to wipe away excess product it is set to go. Then simply run it through your lashes and coat them all and as you do so you can feel it separating your lashes while coating them in mascara.
It only takes a few seconds to coat your lashes as the brush is big enough to catch a lot of the at the same time then you just need to coat the corner lashes and application is complete. The consistency is not runny and not clumpy so it just coats the lashes lightly yet gives you the definition you would want from any mascara.
This mascara does deliver what it promises after I use this product my eye lashes look longer and a lot fuller. As I have small lashes it is usually hard to find mascara that can make my eyes stand out without my lashes looking like spider legs and all clumpy.
Normally with mascaras I have to get used to applying them before I can get really good results but from the very first time I used this because of its easy application and the brilliant results it delivered I fell in love.
This really does give you a high impact look but at the same time keeps it suitable so you can apply it for day to day wear.
I can put this on first thing in the morning and run around doing my daily routine and although it is less viable in the evening you can still see the product working to define your eyes. This includes me working full time and running around after 3 children which I find a lot of makeup products fail to deliver there long lasting results but I can always really on Clinique to deliver.
Although this mascara will last a quick downfall of rain and is waterproof in that sense it will not prove to be effective against anything heavier as has proved happen a few times being stuck at a bus stop with big black panda eyes is not a good look.
Like most mascaras I find that if I apply this is the morning I cannot re apply in the evening without completely removing the mascara as it does clump and make my eyes look messy. Although I do not go out often as I have 3 young children it would still be nice to be able to freshen up my make up without having to take the time to remove it all completely to re apply.
As this product lasts all day with no problem at all I was worried it would be a nightmare to get off but actually with some face wipes it comes off just as easy as it goes on. This leaves your lashes natural and ready to be coated again the next morning. There is no need for extensive rubbing or force just gently wipes the cloths over your lashes and the product comes away easily.
This is fantastic mascara easy to apply and lasts all day but the thing is there is many other cheaper alternatives available that work just as well to provide an excellent finish it makes you wonder if it really is worth that £16 price tag.
A while ago, the Clinique counter in Boots was offering free samples of mascara if you brought in an old mascara to exchange. I obtained both samples available, including the High Impact Mascara which this review is about. I was never previously bothered about Clinique products - I'd always seen the brand as rather 'clinical' and dull, and had a bad experience with the 3-step skincare system several years ago, but I've had good experiences with the products I've tried recently.
This mascara comes in a simple tube, which is dark green (almost black) with simple gold writing. It is supposed to give maximum volume, definition and length by using a brush that combs and separated the lashes as it applies dramatic colour. The mascara is claimed to lengthen and give volume with no clumping.
Inside the mascara, the wand is quite standard, although rather thin. The mascara is very easy to apply, and goes on my lashes easily with no more smudging than most mascaras (I am clumsy). I prefer mascara which are versatile and serve for both day and night, and this one fits that criteria - one coat produces a more natural, defined and lengthened look (which is still effective - 'High Impact' is an appropriate name for this mascara) while another coat creates a more dramatic look. I do feel that this mascara is designed for and suits a more dramatic evening look, but there's no reason why you shouldn't use this during the day as I do for a slightly more natural look. The mascara doesn't clump at all, even after several months of use, which is impressive.
The mascara has good staying power and I don't need to reapply it during the day (unless I'm adding an extra coat when going out in the evening). However I've noticed it can sometimes smudge slightly, for example when I've gone out in the rain, my eyes have been watering, or I've gone to the gym (okay, so I probably shouldn't wear mascara in the gym...). In fairness, the mascara does not claim to be waterproof, though I've used other non-waterproof mascaras which smudge less easily. The mascara is easily removed using normal makeup remover.
The mascara is priced at £15, which is expensive though not as highly priced as other high-end brands (including my favourite mascara, Lancome Hypnose). I feel this is reasonable for a mascara of this quality. My only issue with the product is the ease with which it can smudge, but in general, it is a high quality product and it looks good!
