Advantages: Even coverage, no clumping or flaking, natural effects
Disadvantages: Not 'High Impact'
As a mum of three young kids, I don't usually have the spare cash for premium make up brands such as Clinique (let alone the occasion to wear them anymore!) The one item of make up that I wear on a daily basis is mascara, so when I discovered that Glamour magazine were giving away Clinique products with each copy, it was the mascara that I really wanted. I bought several copies and managed to get hold of a small tube of black mascara for the cost of the magazine.
A full size tube of this Clinique High Impact mascara usually costs around £15 from their counters in stores such as Boots and Debenhams. To be honest, I don't find that particularly expensive for a 'premium' brand as I can easily pay that for a High Street brand such as Rimmel or Maybelline. My slightly smaller (4g) tube is often featured as a complimentary gift from Clinique counters, as part of their regular Bonus Time offer or can be picked up from eBay. I quite like the compact size of the tube as I often find myself discarding tubes of mascara with plenty left inside as I always throw them out six months after opening them, for hygiene reasons. There should be less waste with this sample size, especially as this has now become my favourite mascara!
When I first tried this mascara, I must admit I was a little underwhelmed by my initial impressions of the wand itself. I've got used to mascara wands becoming ever longer and more elaborate and most of them now come in all sorts of weird and wonderful shapes and designs. The wand that comes with this High Impact mascara seems really short (even taking into account the smaller tube.) The word that instantly sprung to mind was 'stumpy'! The wand looks really uninspiring and basic in its design and not really what I was expecting from Clinique.
The crucial thing is how well the wand performs at actually applying the mascara. Here, its performance couldn't be faulted. The simple wand slips easily in and out of the tube without collecting an excess of mascara. It's straightforward design makes it easy to apply evenly across my both my upper and lower lashes. My lower lashes are particularly fine and actually quite long. They are prone to clumping and sticking together when I use many other brands but this mascara manages to separate each individual hair, coat them evenly and avoid clumping or sticking. It might sound like a pretty basic achievement but so many brands can't even get that right, despite their grand claims and fancy wands!
The other issue that I have with mascara is that I rub my eyes a lot. I wear contact lenses and I'm also tired- so bloody tired- that I can end up looking like I've gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson by mid morning! Wearing this Clinique mascara, I still rub my eyes just as frequently but this doesn't seem to smudge or flake at all. I suspect this is because of the light, even coverage the wand achieves meaning that I don't over-apply mascara in the first place.
The overall look that this achieves is very simple and natural - perfect for daywear. There are no fancy 'false lash effects' here which is ideal for my everyday needs. (I don't want to look like Jordan on the school run!) I do think the name 'High Impact' is slightly misleading as the results are actually quite subtle and understated, which is not the impression that the name gives. Personally, I find this enhances my pale lashes and helps to open up my eyes, making me look wide awake and fresh. (If only I felt the same!)
At the end of the day (or even the morning after the day before) I find this very easy to remove with just some facial soap and warm water, without needing to rub my delicate eye area to hard. This comes away easily with no panda eyes left behind.
I have been very pleased with the results that I've had from this mascara as it suits my needs entirely. I could understand why some women might prefer a mascara that makes more of an impact than this supposedly 'High Impact' achieves, but I find it perfect for a fresh-faced natural look. For once, the full selling price seems more than reasonable and this is actually a product that I would happily pay the full price for.
Summary: An excellent quality mascara for day wear
