      A perfect evening mascara.

I've had many, many mascaras over the years and always love trying a new one. I tend to buy fairly standard high street mascaras and then treat myself to an expensive one at the airport once a year. Otherwise I rely on kind gifts from other people in order to try out some more expensive brands.

Clinique is a bit of a mid-way point in the price scale - not way over the top but not cheap either. You would probably find yourself paying around £16.00 for a mascara like this one from this brand and that's probably over double what I'd usually want to pay for one.

The mascara comes in a lovely silver coloured plastic tube with silver coloured metal twist on lid. The design is conventional, cylindrical shaped tube, but if it works and looks nice then what more do you need?

The fluid itself is silky smooth, ultra black, has a nice smell to it and is the perfect consistency. This is really where your money goes with more expensive brands. The fluids do tend to be much better quality and this does give you an amazing look and feel for your lashes.

The brush on this mascara is conical shaped, tapering towards the far end. I like this shape because it helps you get great extension and fullness on the larger outer lashes and a more delicate soft look in the small inner ones. It also allows for getting those tricky to reach lashes which is definitely a plus for me. The bristles are evenly spaced and there is very little clumping on the brush because of this.

The mascara goes on beautifully. I find all my lashes are coated and look nice with few clumps or sticking together bits. I do find it better for volume than length so if you want double the lash length then think again. If you want high impact though this is a great mascara to combine with another one than achieves good length - then you've got the whole package.

I think this is probably more of an evening look mascara because it does give great volume which can be a little heavy for day. I definitely have to say that even for £16.00 I think this is a decently priced mascara considering the quality. My only slight qualm is that I find it does run out more quickly than my other mascaras. Perhaps this is because I like using it so much?

Overall, a lovely mascara if you are willing to pay that bit extra.

Having naturally long eye lashes anyway i dont need a lot of mascara and hate the ones that clump leaving my eyes looking like they have a torantula hanging off them.

I am quite a big fan of clinique anyway with most of my make up products belonging to them so when i needed a new black mascara i went to debenhams who have a clinique counter, i payed £11 in a sale for my mascara but dont have a clue how much i saved, i think this was very reasonable for a clinique mascara as i payed £22 for my last one which was rimmel i think.

The brush on this mascara is great for getting the fine eye lashes at the sides of your eyes as it goes to a thin point at the end but i didnt like the fact that it didnt shape my lashes like my previous mascara has due to the streight brush.

The mascara comes out of the tub nicely and you have enough on the brush to do your one eye with the brush only being inserted into the tub once if you want a nice coverage for day time wear but this is not enough for me for evening wear but i did find if i allowed the first layer to dry i could layer it up to the desired thickness without any clumping which was great.

This mascara is great if you have sensitive eyes or wear contact lenses like i do as it doesnt dry your eyes out or make them feel heavy like other mascaras i have tried.

It washes off very easily with water as it isnt water proof so i wouldnt go watching any soppy films wholst wearing this mascara for fear of it running.

If you are looking for a good quality mascara for every day where or evening then this is great especially if you have sensitive eyes.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A lovely product that vies a nice long lasting look

I'm a bit of a niggly nelly when it comes to mascara, it's my must have product, but it has to do quite a few things to earn a place in my make up bag. The main things being, hold a curl in the lash, lengthen without too much clumping, not smudge and not irritate my eyes. The Clinique double lash mascara fulfils most of these criteria but not all.

I bought this with two other mascaras (one the Bourjois frange recently reviewed) to try something different and cheaper (where I bought it) than my usual mascara. I bought it in the half size tube, but it has lasted me over 3 months already, of regular but not everyday use. I know retailers tell us to throw our mascaras away after 3 months but this is mainly to cover their own backs should someone have a reaction to one that's been opened longer, and of course to get us to buy more product. As long as you don't have an eye infection and don't share with anyone else then it should be fine until all used up or dried out.

The tube I own is a pretty dusky sky blue but the full size looks a bit different and is an attractive pewter silver. It is available in black and black brown, so not a cutting edge fashion mascara. I own it in the black. I'm dark haired so this colour suits me well, if you have light hair you may prefer the brown black, but I think the black always looks nice no matter what your colouring.

The brush is lovely, its a bristle type which is long but not too thick, and it tapers towards the tip. I like this shape as the tip can be used alone to catch any tiny lashes that may be hiding at the corners of your eyes or in between the fully grown lashes. I can easily use this mascara to coat the top surfaces of my lashes without getting product smeared all over my lid (though I do still manage to get some black dots sometimes).

A quick mascara tip not related specifically to the Clinique which you could skip if you wish, is something a friend recommended. If you want to sweep a mascara wand through your lashes with impunity getting a really good grip on them then try using a lid guard. I have tried this, not an official bought one, just piece of thin card (usually ripped off the back of a birthday card or similar). This does work and allows you to get cleanly right in to the roots which makes the lash line look thicker and darker from the start, it is very helpful if your lashes are short too, as it allow you to tinker about and get very close without mess. I must admit though that I don't really bother with this as I seem to get a decent look by just applying the usual way.

The mascara looks quite glossy and wet on removing the wand from the tube often with a little tail of mascara. visible on the tip, this is easily wiped away into the neck of the tube. There seems to be just the right amount of product on the brush to make several sweeps through the lashes. The mascara goes on beautifully and evenly, and the lovely glossy dark look is apparent immediately.

The mascara builds well without clumping as long as you don't let it dry between coats. Personally however I do like to allow it to dry a little In between, as I think it gives a thicker build of mascara, and this can result in slight clumping, but is easily remedied with a lash comb or pin if you are brave, (if you keep sweeping the wand through your lashes while wet, then it's bound to take some of the product back off, so doesn't thicken or lengthen as much).

I can't fault the way my lashes look with this mascara the black is very black, but slightly glossy like thick healthy natural lashes. The mascara lengthens more than it volumises, and it does this in a natural way which doesn't give a spidery look to your lashes.

There is no strong smell with this, just a slight typically mascara smell, which disappears once the lashes are dry.

The mascara does take a little time to dry down, so I have to be careful not to sneeze or bat my eyelashes for about half a minute. Once curled my lashes do sometimes tickle against my top lid just below my eyebrows and this is where I get the perforated paper look of a little row of black mascara dots across the lid if I'm not careful.

The only problem I have (other than the price when buying at full price from high street retailers) is that it really doesn't hold a curl neither does it impart a curl itself. Once this is on no matter how I've suffered with the tortuous curling contraption, one eye ends up looking smaller than the other because the lashes one one eye stick out straight, and I end up with the familiar Patrick Moore look.
The only way around this is to apply a thin layer of waterproof mascara before using this, and then it's fine.

This mascara doesn't claim to be waterproof, and that in my opinion is why it doesn't hold the curl, there seems to be something in waterproof formulations that set the curl. However this is one of the very few non waterproof mascaras that has stayed on my eyes without smearing (as I suffer from allergies and often have quite watery eyes). I've not worn it swimming, but I have worn it in the rain and there's been no movement. I can't say how it would hold up to a good old sobbing session though, but then again who cares about mascara at such times.

The longevity of this product is great, and my lashes look pretty much the same at the end of the day as at the start. I don't notice any flaking or smudging, and my lashes remain flexible and 'real' feeling.

This comes off beautifully with almost any eye make up remover, from cream, to oil, and more watery types. I do like to get every last trace of mascara off at the end of the day, and I'm never left scrubbing at my poor eyes for ages as I am with some others. My eyes feel fresh and normal with no irritation or redness. As my eyes are not so tolerant of eye make up as they used to be, so it's nice to use something that's not reactive.

Currently available in a 4g mini size at directcosmetics for £3.49, a full size elsewhere is 8g and costs £15 so even if you bought two to get the same weight it is still less than half the price of the full size elsewhere.

All in all I think this is a fabulous mascara which really does make my lashes significantly longer and thicker, quickly with minimal fuss, while still looking healthy and fairly natural. I wouldn't say the lashes were literally doubles, but it's not a bad job at all. I can't afford to pay £15 for it, but if I could I would probably buy again, I will certainly repurchase the mini version if and when it's available.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A mascara that doesn't serve its main purpose but still good for other reasons.

This was yet another mini product by Clinique that I received in a free gift some time ago by Clinique. I already owned the lash power mascara and loved it so I had high expectations of this one too.

This one is called lash doubling mascara and is meant to magnify lashes to twice their size and thicken them to maximum volume. A special precision brush assists in this very visible up-sizing to coat each lash evenly, lushly while working its thickening magic. It also apparently measures up in the wear department too, with no clumping, smearing or flaking.

The first time I tried this I remember being left a little disappointed, this definitely did not make my lashes appear twice their size. Considering this is its main purpose! However, it was very easy to apply, I start at the roots of my lashes and wiggle the brush so that lashes get between the bristles. I don't usually wiggle the brush and just do a quick few swipes up my lashes when applying mascara, but this is what Clinique advised you to do with this mascara. As a result, my lashes were all separated neatly and there was no clumping visible. This did make up for the lack of the lash doubling with this product.

I usually don't carry mascara around with me during the day for the fact that a few coats throughout the day usually means my lashes will start to clump together and look completely fake and messy! However, I found this mascara helps to separate my lashes and as it is only small I now carry it around with me. This is the only mascara I would use when topping-up my make-up during the day as it doesn't ruin the look of my lashes even though I already have mascara on. It does not make my lashes appear longer and so that is why I stick to another mascara for this and instead use this lash doubling one as a little top-up for extra beautiful lashes!

For what I use this for, I will not be buying a full size bottle when I have ran out as it costs £15. I would rather buy Cliniques lash power mascara which I love. I would recommend this for anyone who would like beautifully seperated lashes and if you are willing to pay £15 for it, but don't expect your lashes to look double their size and do not buy it for that reason, as in my experience it does not do that!

This is available at Clinique counters in many department stores such as Debenhams and Boots, and also on many websites online including Amazon, but I found it costs more on there so you might be better off going directly to a Clinique counter for this. I am deducting 2 stars for the fact that it does not make your lashes appear double the size like it claims to, and for the price.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Recommended only for those seeking a bit of the luxury factor...

This is expensive mascara... It costs £ 12.50 for an 8g tube, and when a standard mascara will set you back only around £ 3, that's quite a hefty price tag. The question is though, if it's worth four times as much, is it four times as good?

Well, I should start by saying that I got this mascara in a Christmas package of Clinique products. This is important because, not having shelled out all the cash myself, I didn't have those super high expectations of the product that you do if you've scrimped and saved to buy it yourself.

Getting down to business though, how does this mascara perform? In my opinion the answer is, simply, pretty darn well.

The packaging for most products doesn't really matter, but for mascara it makes a difference because if the bottle is not well designed too much (or, I guess, too little) mascara ends up on the brush once you pull it out, which can mean the end result on your lashes is sub-par. This isn't the case with the Clinique mascara. I simply unscrew the lid, and pull the brush out, and there seems to be just the right amount of mascara on the brush to allow for easy application. No re-dipping, or trying to scrape the mascara off the brush onto the edge of the bottle-neck (with normal application at least).

Application is simple really, like all mascaras, and because the brush is cone shaped (as shown in the picture above) it is quite easy to apply mascara evenly to all of your lashes at once. The brush seems to fit the curve of the lash-line quite well. The only problem is that if you're trying to accentuate the lashes at the edge of your eye, using the narrower tip of the brush only can cause some clumping because, naturally, being narrower, not as much mascara is scraped off the brush when it is pulled from the tube.

So how does it look, once on? Well, I like the fact that with this mascara it's quite easy to apply either just one light coat and have well-defined, darker, but still natural looking lashes. This makes this mascara good for day-wear and less dressy evening-wear. It can also be applied more thickly to create a stronger look. This I find is enough for me as I don't usually go for a very made-up sort of look. If you do prefer really bold eyelashes though I don't think this is the mascara for you... and I'm not sure that it lives up to its name of 'Lash Doubling Mascara'! But then, what mascara really does?? The good thing though is that the lashes are still quite flexible and soft, they don't feel brittle at all really.

As for wear, well I don't really have any problems with this mascara. It doesn't flake or clump, and it doesn't seem to wear off either. That being said I do sometimes get the tiniest bit of smudging after a long day (or night!), but I suppose that's to be expected.

Cleaning this mascara off is quite simple as it washes off quite easily in water (that being said I haven't ever had it run down my face when caught in the rain, if that's a concern for you!), and with a little makeup remover or moisturiser it comes easily off the skin.

It seems to last reasonably well too, I've had mine for about a year (yes, I know, I know, you're only supposed to use mascara for 6 months, but who actually lives up to that??) and use it regularly and it is by no means running out. However, most mascaras have about the same amount in them these days I'd say so I couldn't claim that it runs out any slower than other mascaras.

So that's I guess all I can tell you about how the mascara actually functions. Getting back to the original question, then, is this mascara worth it's rather hefty price tag? Well, I like the simple, rather elegant look that it creates, it's very easy to use, so I would have to say that it is definitely amongst the best mascaras that I've ever used. That being said it certainly isn't a miracle product and isn't going to somehow magically give you false-eyelash looking flappers. So it really comes down to what sort of budget you have for makeup, as to whether you should buy this product. For myself, I know I would be VERY happy to receive another tube as a gift, but I'm not sure that I could ever really justify splashing out on this myself, when no one is probably really going to notice if I use a product that cost a third of the price. This product loses a star for the price.

Recommended only for those seeking a bit of the luxury factor...
