A great mascara for adding colour and length to your lashes

This time last year I was in the middle of a temporary assignment working for one of Mark's clients, the job had come out of the blue and there was a very strict dress code due to the fact that I would be greeting some of the most devout Muslims in the county.  I had suitable clothes, but after an awkward (on his part) discussion with the lovely manager of the company it was decided that my style of make-up was a little shocking considering the type of men and (usually burqa-clad) women I would be assisting.  Oh well, any excuse for a shopping spree!  Actually I had more subtle make-up so in the end all I bought was a new mascara, this Long Pretty Lashes mascara by Clinique - the lady on the counter had said it provided a full but natural look, which was exactly what I was after.

And she was right.  This mascara really lives up to its name, providing me with the type of lashes that you'd call pretty rather than the sexy effect I usually look for.  I'd bought it in Brown/Black to help tone things down a bit more, I'd usually buy mascara in Black (or bright colours for special occasions) but was extremely impressed by the glossiness and rich chocolate appearance of the colour.  The brown tones actually helps bring out the blue in my eyes which is something I'd never really thought about before when looking at colours other than black.

The brush is a bit longer than I like, but the slim design of it makes it easy to catch every single eyelash for an attractive framing effect.  I do find the brush picks up a lot of mascara with each dip into the tube and this can lead to clumping if you're not careful, wiping the brush against the inside of the tube helps to distribute it more evenly though and once I got into the habit of doing this I never had a clump again.  Because of the length of the brush it makes it a bit fiddly to do my bottom lashes and it did take a while to get the hang of it, it's worth persevering with though as the effect when all your lashes are done is absolutely gorgeous.  The cynic in me wonders if Clinique deliberately made the brush like this to force us to buy their 'Bottom Lash Mascara'?

Once applied the mascara looks fab; two coats gives me visibly longer lashes with a lovely deep colour which emphasises my eyes, it doesn't exactly volumise my eyelashes but does have a slightly thickening effect.  To be fair, Clinique don't make any claims about it creating volume and this particular time I was actually looking for a natural looking mascara so I'm glad it didn't bulk my lashes out too much.  I'd recommend you leave it a couple of minutes between coats as I found it made my lashes stick together if I tried rushing the application, I think this is probably due to the amount of mascara the brush picks up and deposits on my lashes each time but isn't too irritating.

It lasts well too, a morning application would still look perfect by the time I got home at around 6pm  with absolutely no flaking or smudging at all.  The mascara is very easy to remove with any decent eye make-up remover, I'm using a Lancome one at the moment and that gets rid of all traces with one quick sweep. Another thing worth mentioning is the fact that Long Pretty Lashes doesn't irritate my eyes at all, I wear contact lenses so have to be a bit  careful about what eye make-up I wear but I've had no problems at all with this mascara.

      £17 from the Clinique counter.

        Who needs false eyelashes?!?!

I've used tons of different types of mascara before but this is my
favourite. It really does what it says on the tin and gives you long,
        pretty eyelashes!!

I use the black one (colour 01) and it comes in a lovely silver container
with a silver lid. Inside, the mascara wand is black with a really full
bristle brush on the end. When you sweep the bristles across your lashes it really plumps and coats them well, without clumping them together or causing any flaking - once applied, you eyelashes look really long, separated and defined.

Lots of people have asked me what mascara I'm wearing and where I got it. I bought this in debenhams and it cost me about £14 - which is quite expensive compared to high street brands so I tend not to use it everyday and have had the same one quite a while. Although, it has still never dried out or clogged up. You could probably get this cheaper on the internet though.

This range comes in a few colours, and the black 01 colour is really dark
so if you wanted something a bit softer you could go for the 02 black/brown version that is something in the middle.

I wear contact lenses and this has never aggravated my eyes at all, even
after having it on all day - whereas other mascaras I have had problems
        with.

I will definitely replace this when it runs out.

        Perfect for natural looking lashes

I first bought this product because I needed a mascara which could give me a natural look suitable for daytime wear. I had already purchased Clinique's High Impact mascara for evening looks, and being incredibly happy with this product I decided to show some brand loyalty. I'm glad I did!

The lightweight, no-fuss shimmery grey tube looks sophisticated, however after a while of being in my make-up bag all the writing peeled completely off, leaving me no way to identify it without squinting at the small sticker at the bottom of the tube. This is but a small sacrifice to pay as the mascara itself is wonderful.

The mascara wand unscrews easily ready for application. The brush is smaller than most, with lots of little bristles to reach inbetween the individual lashes to help separate them. The formula itself is lightweight and hardly noticable when applied. I have had no experience of clumping or flaking, however after a while product does tend to build up on the wand so you may find you need to use a lash brush after application to wipe away the excess.

With the choice of two shades (Black and Black/Brown) this product is perfect for creating a natural, long lasting daytime look - lashes will be separated and lengthened without overdoing it. The mascara is easily removed at the end of the day, and doesn't irritate sensitive eyes.

If you're looking for volume and that almost false-lash effect then I wouldn't recommend this product at all, however if you want a natural look then at around £13 this product is well worth the price tag.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

A fantastic mascara that does the job without the fake look

I first tried this mascara after trying the Clinique 3 step system, as I had tried many different mascaras and wasn't fantastically happy with any of them. This mascara gives a natural looking fullness and blackness to the eyelashes which makes it good for work, and extra coats can be applied to take it to an evening look. The mascara doesn't clump into big lumps on my lashes and doesn't flake off during the day, a problem I've had with practically every other mascara I've tried!

The tube is the usual classy Clinique style and is matt grey with a silver lid, and the wand has close set bristles to seperate the lashes. I love the black one, but it also comes in a black/brown colour. A tube lasts for ages, over 6 months, and I really like that it doesn't dry out like some mascaras so you really can use it all up. It's water resistant enough to stay out in a bit of rain or with a few tears, but a full on crying fit or swim will leave it all down your face! It also comes off nicely with make up remover so I never wake up with the panda eye effect you sometimes get even if you've tried to get it all off. It's available from department stores and the Clinique website, and costs around £13.50. Like with all Clinique products it's fragrance free and allergy tested, so it's good for sensitive eyes too.

This is a lovely product to give longer looking lashes without the drag queen effect!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

A good quality mascara, but doesn't give added volume

~*~ Clinique Long Pretty Lashes ~*~

I have recently not been very loyal to any of my make-up. After a good few years of sticking to the same mascara, I changed my brand and the results were so much better that expected that I have been since changing mascaras every time I run out (although of course keeping one of my trusty favourite in stock at all times in case of an emergency - I can barely leave the house without mascara on!)

I have always been a fan of Clinique - their super powder is my all time favourite, something I cannot live without. Being a contact lens wearer as well, mascaras can sometimes irritate my eyes, especially when I poke myself in the eye with the wand, which happens quite a lot! Clinique is one of the few mascaras that doesn't irritate my eyes no matter how much of the product I manage to get in there, which is a great plus before we've even started the review!

          ~*~ The product itself ~*~

Clinique's 'Long Pretty Lashes' comes packaged in the standard Clinique floral box. Personally I think the box is pretty outdated and old looking, but you do recognise it as being Clinique instantly so I won't complain too much. On opening the box, you will come in contact with a silver mascara tube with the brand name printed on the side. I love the packaging of the actual mascara tube. Sexy packaging makes me feel like I've spent my money well. It's depressing to spend close to twenty quid on a make-up product when opening the box reveals a plain black tube, sometimes without any lettering on it!

          ~*~ The effect ~*~

The first time I used this mascara I wasn't overly impressed. Although it did separate and lengthen my lashes, the effect wasn't huge. I then tried my tried-and-tested method - one light coat of your old mascara underneath three of four of the new mascara, which gave me a lot closer to my desired effect. I'm not sure what it is about new mascaras, but they never seem to reach their full potential on first application - they always need a few days of use to be broken in - I'm not sure if this is just me or not!

The mascara wand is very easy to use - the lid/applicator is large enough to get hold of. The brush itself is pretty much a standard brush, although it is definitely of good quality - it never reached the stage of being squashed into a bristle-less stick shape, like so many cheaper mascaras I have previously owned have ended up in by the end of their lives! The brush makes application very easy, and hard to get wrong really (I said hard, not impossible...)

I wasn't 100% sure I was making the right choice when I purchased this mascara, but there was a 3 for 2 type deal at Boots at the time so I thought I'd give it a go, even though I usually go for volume mascaras as opposed to length. The results of this product are a lot more subtle than the results I usually go for. Although it does make your lashes more defined, and longer, the colour is not as dark as some of the other products in the range, and it does not give lashes any added volume at all, which was a major negative in my opinion.

The product does however leave lashes feeling clean, not bogged down by the product, and longer (just not perhaps as long as you might expect).

          ~*~ The price ~*~

This product only comes in two colours - black or brown. I'd go for the black every time, but if you are after an even more subtle look, brown is the way forward.

You can purchase this product directly from Clinique for £12.50, which isn't too bad for a premium brand product. If you would consider purchasing make-up from ebay, the product is currently selling, full sized for £10 including postage.

          ~*~ The verdict ~*~

Clinique make a great range of good quality, hypoallergenic make-up products, and this is no exception. The mascara is good quality, long lasting and did not irritate my eyes once despite countless amounts of the product ending up there!

I personally will not be purchasing this product again, as I prefer a much more dramatic effect in my mascaras. I would wear a couple of coats of this mascara for general daytime use, to give a natural, effortless look - it really does give the impression that you aren't wearing mascara. For night time, though, I go for something a lot more dramatic - their High Impact Mascara is my favourite at the moment.

Overall, I would recommend this mascara to someone looking for a good quality, discreet mascara for general daytime use. If however you are after fuller lashes in addition to length, it's probably not for you.
