Coastal Scents Bright Eyed
One of the most important aspects in my daily make up routine is the addressing of the issue that faces many women, that being the covering or concealing of under eye darkness. It is amazing to me that attention to this one area of make-up can really make the difference between looking tired and looking awake, and certainly as I have got older I have more problems in this area!
I have several favourite products that I use on a daily basis, but one of my favourites may be new to you, because it isn't one that you can pick off the shelves in the high street, but it is easily available by mail order. The Coastal Scents Bright Eyed is available from Coastal Scents.com and costs $9.95 which is £6.35 and shipping is £7.40 making a total cost of £13.75. This makes it comparable in cost to MAC concealers, and of course undercuts high end products such as Touche Eclat by miles. They accept Paypal so it is simple and secure to order and the items arrive very quickly, and usually the package contains a free gift which is always a joy to receive. For my last purchase they enclosed a beautiful turquoise eye pigment which has become one of my favourite shades. The items are beautifully packaged and I can't fault this aspect of the purchase at all in any way.
Excellent Reviews- A Good Start!
The eye brightener scores a massive 4.6 out of 5 on Makeupalley, the review website which is a wonderful place to visit if you are new to make-up in particular, because it has lots of reviews there not just on brands and products, but also on individual colours and shades. This site has saved me so much money as I always look there before I buy something to see what others are saying about the items, and with such a large readership their views count for a lot.
Choose Your Shade With Care
The first point I would like to make is the importance here of understanding the colours in this product and there are four. In my experience if you are pale skinned you only have two options- Ivory or Light - don't be tempted towards the medium shade as it will be way too dark. I use Ivory and I am an NW20 in MAC, I have also used light which has a more peachy undertone than Ivory which is more pink based. Both shades work on me but I prefer the Ivory as it seems to be a better match.
The product claims to diminish the appearance of dark circles and fine lines, and impart a rested appearance. It also claims to be lightweight, and can be used either before foundation or afterwards. It is recommended to use in the inner corner of the eye and under the lower lash line after mascara or eye liner has been used.
So let's see whether I agree with the claims made by the manufacturer?
Does It Work?
To apply I use my Real Techniques Shading Brush and I simply pat a small number of dots around the lower eye area and inner corner before gently working these into the skin with a patting motion. You can also use fingers for this, and in my experience you need to be a little bit careful not to use too much product as it is very effective and easy to blend. I usually apply this after foundation and it takes only a few moments to apply. Being a lovely consistency it glides effortlessly over the skin, and it really does brighten this area adding light reflection, and imparting a less tired look as it claims to do. I think this does a really good job at camouflaging my dark veins which seem to be more apparent than a few years ago.
I would say that this is a superb product, and if you can buy it in The States you will save the higher postal charges. However even with the extra costs of shipping this is still a very reasonable mid priced buy, and many online reviews say it compares very favourably with the world famous YSL Touche Eclat which of course costs twice the price of this. I have never tried that product, but I would say that this is in my favourites category where under eye brighteners are concerned, comparing well with those I have tried from Clinique and from MAC. It is also more economical as it contains way more product that these competitors for the price.
I don't think I have found any disadvantages personally with this product. I would certainly say to be careful when choosing your shade and if anything go lighter, as the medium and dark shades are very dark indeed, and are not a gradual step up from the two lighter shades. It is said that peach toned correctors are ideal if you have that deep blue discolouration under the eye area, so if you are debating between the two lighter shades then the "Light" offers this more than the "Ivory" which is pinker toned. Just make sure that you only use a pinhead size amount as it is very concentrated and a little goes a really long way.
The Coastal Scents website is really good as they have links to YouTube videos where reviewers have talked about their experiences with the products, and there is an excellent one pertaining to The Bright Eyed on there. The lady reviewing this did say that she felt it was important to moisturise the eye area well to avoid this product creasing, but I have never found this to be a problem and I have mature skin.
All in all this is a fantastic product for the price and one that I will purchase again. I feel it will be a long time though, as my tube has been used every day for 6 months and it is barely touched due to its long lasting qualities- a little really does go a long way. I shall probably pick one up next time I am in The States. There is good availability of Coastal Scents products on Ebay, but I have yet to find this from anywhere other than Coastal Scents in The US.
I think if you need this kind of product, as many of us do, then it is certainly worth looking at as I would say this is outstanding and very sensibly priced.
