I first discovered E.L.F make-up when I attended a Vegan Festival and came across a stall selling their products. E.L.F stands for "Eyes, Lips and Face" and all of their products are cruelty free, meaning they have not been tested on animals.
This gloss comes in a 13.8g soft and malleable tube which you can squeeze to dispense the product from it's slanted sponge nozzle. The gloss is available in several shades but I bought the shade 'Colour Fanatic' which is a rich, sparkling orange with pink undertones. It is a strong, punchy shade with a hint of glamour.
The brand state this gloss "nourishes and moisturises lips on contact". The formula is infused with softening aloe as well as vitamins A and E, both skin conditioning vitamins. The gloss also contains shea butter which softens and makes lips look shiny and healthy.
I personally think the consistency of the gloss is a little too thick. It doesn't glide onto my lips as easily as I would like it too and more often than not I tend to use a finger to spread the gloss over my lips rather than just the tip of the tube. However, the density of the gloss means that the colour is rather striking and the gloss looks more like a very wet looking lipstick rather than a sheer gloss. The shade is very attractive and I feel the tones of this 'Colour Fanatic' shade particularly suits dark hair and pale skin.
As far as awarding lips with moisture and nourishment, I feel that the gloss seems to provide a protective shield against dryness rather than to provide a soothing formula to combat any dryness you already have. The gloss does feel very thick and sticky on the lips and I always can feel the gloss providing a barrier against the elements. The gloss doesn't wear off easily either, so the protective shield is long lasting. One negative is that the gloss makes my lips feel slightly tacky so I can feel a slight stickiness when I open and shut my mouth.
I'm happy with my purchase overall. The gloss costs £3.95 a tube so it's very affordable and it's a product that is different from other lip gloss brands in my make-up collection. I would recommend the product to ladies who enjoy wearing thick lip gloss. I would also recommend the brand to those who have yet to discover it.
My new favourite cosmetics company is E.L.F., which stands for Eyes, Lips, Face. They are an online retailer and their UK web store can be reached at this address http://www.eyeslipsface.co.uk. They have several different ranges of make-up, including their Basic, Mineral, and Studio lines. I love wearing make-up and have great fun experimenting with colours and different looks. It's nice to have lots of products to play around with but there are always a few items that become must-haves and form the basis of most of my 'faces'. I tend to opt for brightly coloured or heavily lined eyes and keep my lips looking natural.
This lip gloss is part of the Studio range and comes in a range of 8 different shades including mainly pinks, metallics and plum. It costs £3.50 for a 13.8g lip gloss tube. You can view the shades by looking at the colour swatches or view supersized images of the finished product. I selected the shade Fanatic as it looked like a strong but wearable colour.
E.L.F. say: "This 2 in 1 gloss has shimmering lip color in the inner tube and clear conditioning gloss in the outer tube for ultimate lip satisfaction. Hydrate your lips with key moisturizers and achieve sheer color perfection. Infused with Vitamins A and E, Aloe and Shea Butter for rich hydration."
The 2-in-1 conditioning lip gloss comes packaged in a stylish black cardboard box that features a large image of the product on the front, and directions and ingredients are printed on the back. The gloss itself comes in a plastic squeezy tube which is see through, allowing you to easily see how much product you have left. The applicator is a slanted sponge tip with a small hole in it that forms the end of the tube, and is protected by a screw on lid.
Directions for use: Apply liberally to lips as often as needed.
This gloss has a unique design point that makes it stand out from others. The coloured part of the gloss is set inside a separate section of the gloss tube, and is kept apart from the clear conditioning gloss which surrounds the core of colour. To obtain a proper application you must allow the two ingredients to combine, and this requires patience and a specific technique. The first few times I tried to use the gloss only the clear conditioning gloss would come out and I couldn't get any colour at all. I eventually contacted customer services as I thought the product may have been faulty. I received a very quick and friendly reply explaining that there is a knack to using this gloss, and attaching a link to an instructional video. This seemed a little OTT and it is indeed very difficult to use. In short, you need to give a good hard pinch at the top of the tube, and make sure you press down fully so that the pressure reaches into the core colour section. The two parts will then form a blob on the end of the sponge tip and will combine as you spread it over your lips.
The slanted tip gives a smooth and even application, and allows you to sweep the colour evenly over your lips to get a full coverage. The tube packaging is really handy to carry around for on-the-go touch ups as it is small and practical, and really easy to use without fiddling with brushes or wand applicators. The gloss goes on smoothly and spreads well but it is extremely sticky, and this is probably the worst of all the glosses I've ever tried for that awful sticky feeling. It feels as though my lips are being glued together if I close them, and it is uncomfortable and irritatingly noticeable. I can't say I've had any positive effects in regards to the condition of my lips as they just feel constantly tacky, and you need to really give it a hard rub to get rid of the residue at the end of the day.
I selected this gloss in the shade Fanatic, which on the website looked like a bright coral pink with a golden shimmer. In the packaging the colour looks very accurate to what is shown on the website, but when it's on my lips I can hardly notice the colour at all, it looks very weak. I don't know if the conditioning clear gloss somehow dilutes the level of colour saturation but it does not stand out as I was hoping it would.
The lip gloss does last for a reasonable time, probably because it's almost glued to your skin! I can normally get through a half day before needing to re-apply it. It does give a super shiny glossy finish, and looks lovely in that respect. However, the bad points really let it down and I have really come to dislike it for several reasons. That horrible sticky feeling is the worst, it's really unnatural and unpleasant. Also, the colour does not stand out when worn, it's hardly noticeable and it looks like I am just wearing a clear gloss. The packaging looks great but is really impractical to use. Sure, it's handy to carry round but it is very tricky to actually get the colour out of the tube and I normally waste some of the clear gloss by having to wipe off the initial blob of it before the colour starts to come through. This gloss is far too much fuss and does not even give a good result.
I did a review yesterday on E.L.F's budget range Super Glossy Lip Shine, which I believe is worth a full five stars and far surpasses this gloss in terms of quality and colour. Save yourself some money and go for the £1.50 lip gloss instead, it's much nicer all round.
