I have used many different elf products in the past and I am usually satisfied with the quality of he product for such a cheap price. ELF products are incredibly cheap which means the quality is not amazing.
As far as mascaras go, they aren't very expensive anyway. Most of the best mascaras range from about £6-15 for something more than good enough. I would rather pay the extra couple of pounds just for the better quality and result on your lashes. This mascara had a small and thin wand which made it very difficult to apply to my lashes. The wand didn't have lots of different bristles like most,it had only a couple making the mascara turn out really clumpy on my lashes. The mascara was very dark which I liked but the consistancy was terrible. It made all of my eyelashes clump together in random patches. I found it to be very hard work to remove this product. It took a very long time to get rid of any residue left from the mascara. Because I had to scrub so hard to get it off it took a couple of my lashes out which I really didn't like. The mascara stung my eyes as I tried to remove it. No matter how cheap it is, I don't think it is worth buying this mascara at all. It was messy and hard work. You can get a lot better results only having to splurge about £5 more but it's way worth it.
So this was one of the many products I bought in my first order from the E.L.F brand a month or so ago. I'm not super fussy when it comes to mascara with regard to brand, for me it is enough that it lasts all day without smudging or flaking and that it doesn't look clumpy when you're done applying it.
This mascara from e.l.f is a dual ended mascara, one end being "earth" - a regular mascara - and the other being "water" - obviously a waterproof one. I ordered this in black as opposed to brown; despite being blonde I much prefer black mascara and it never looks weird or out of place. It cost a mere £1.50 and comes in a simple and thin packaging, thicker than a pen but slightly thinner than your average mascara tube. The packaging is very simple, the middle section being a silver plastic section with "e.l.f" written on it. The reason it costs so little is because they save on the packaging by leaving it as simple as possible, yet it is still a cute packaging and doesn't give of that no-frills vibe that you would expect from something so cheap.
I feel it would be unfair to review the product after only a day or 2 of use, so I figured I would give both mascaras a fair trial before developing my opinion. The mascara brushes themselves are well formed with the bristles spiralling slightly, I have never had them clog up with mascara and they are brilliant for applying it. There is nothing worse than a mascara brush that clogs up and gets mascara smudges on your eyelids, maybe that's just me who occasionally manages that but it really annoys me and it has never happened to me with this mascara so on that level ease of application is definitely 10/10.
Another amazing thing about this mascara is that it stays put all day. I was a bit skeptical at the thought of a regular and waterproof duo, as most people would automatically go for the waterproof assuming that the regular was not as steadfast. I am actually wearing the regular today and it got given the ultimate test. Currently being in Italy, daytime napping is a regular occurrence and I found myself face down in a pillow a few hours after actually getting up. As I went to the bathroom to check my makeup, I found those beautiful bed-sheet creases in my face and my makeup completely intact! I was extremely impressed! For me this was the ultimate test and it passed with flying colours.
It should also be said that after many long afternoons cooling off in the pool, my waterproof mascara had also passed the efficiency test. The final test for a mascara; when I go to take my makeup off at night with an eye make-up remover or a face wipe, it comes off and yet I still wake up with panda eyes - it is a total nightmare and makes me question the effectiveness of the make-up removers and wipes rather than the mascara. Despite remaining intact throughout the day, when ready to remove this mascara it comes off with ease, leaving me bright eyed and panda eyes free in the morning.
All in all it is the perfect mascara; smudge free, easy to use, stays in place and comes off easily at the end of a long day. If you choose to sleep face down in a pillow you can rest assured that you will look as good as when you went to sleep (plus a few temporary creases from the sheets!). For the price is it more than worth it; gone are the days where I pay £10 or thereabouts for mascara that is way less effective, highly recommended.
When it comes to mascara I'm really picky, I only like certain types of brushes and any sign of clumping and that's it for me, so when I was recently having a virtual wander around www.eyeslipsface.co.uk and noticed they had a mascara for £1.50 I decided to give it a try. To be honest I was expecting the worst and anticipated having to bin it after one use but if you don't try these things out you don't know so one of their "Earth and Water" mascaras went into my shopping basket.
E.L.F have called it "Earth and Water" because it is a duo mascara with a brush at either side of the centre piece and one end is normal mascara and the other is waterproof. Each end is marked so you won't have to guess which is which.
The mascara is 2.5ml so it's not got alot of mascara in it especially as there's both normal and waterproof but it's £1.50 so you can't expect it to last forever! When my order arrived, very quickly as is the usual for E.L.F, I opened it last as I didn't expect it to be suitable. It comes on a simple piece of card and the actual mascara tube is black and silver. It looks nice actually, very understated. It is available in brown or black and I chose the black. It claims to have revolutionary "Liquid Flex" technology and to be smudge and smear proof.
Each end unscrews and reveals the wand in the centre part so the piece you remove is the actual mascara. I usually say I would prefer it to be the other way around but as this is a light, slim product it doesn't bother me in the slightest that the wand is attached to the bulk of the item. The brushes are small but they are the type I like with lots of bristles and no fancy new inventions on them, just good old fashioned mascara brushes.
I first used the waterproof side, I usually do wear waterproof mascara so it doesn't run in the rain etc and I really thought this was going to either clump or be one of those mascaras you can barely see, neither of which is acceptable. So imagine my surprise when this mascara not only didn't clump but also coated and separated my lashes beautifully without giving a really over the top pantomine dame look! I was really shocked it went on so well and the next test was how waterproof it was. I can confirm it was indeed waterproof and it took baby oil to shift it. It didn't smudge, smear or at any point throughout the next 12 hours move despite me having a bath with it on. Result!
I then tried the normal side and had the same results except it came off with baby lotion as opposed to oil but while it was on it looked great and didn't budge. To say I'm impressed with this £1.50 mascara is an understatement.
I've been using it for a few weeks now and it's still doing fine with no drying up or clumpiness so I'm really getting good value for money too, especially since I use it daily. The tube is nice and slim so perfect for popping into your handbag but I've never needed to top this up the whole time I've used it. For a more dramatic look I just add another coat or two and it still doesn't clump. It's actually a brilliant product and I can't believe how good it is for a mere £1.50. I find with E.L.F products sometimes they are fantastic and sometimes they really miss the mark but this one is definitely in the fantastic category. I'd been spending about £6-£7 on a mascara up to then but I'll definitely be buying this cheap but excellent one again. I also noticed no irritation from using it despite it being a cheap one.
Thoroughly recommended and a full 5 stars from me and my defined lashes.
After seeing a review of the E.L.F website on television, I thought to myself, everything £1.50, that's amazing, gotta have some of that!! So a few weeks ago I ordered a couple of things - this mascara being one of them.
It was really easy to order with a secure payment page, which is a must for me when putting in my card details. The delivery charge was not too expensive, only £2.95 despite the fact that I ordered several items. My whole order was only about £15 so I was really pleased with myself in being such a bargain hunter!
The items came quicker than I expected, (it was two days if I remember correctly) although I didn't know what to expect because I was given no delivery time frame from E.L.F. Up to now I couldn't fault the website at all, I thought I'd found a real gem. Hmmm...
As you can see from the picture, it is a double one, one side being an ordinary mascara, the other being a waterproof. I ordered the black one, but brown was also available.
I tried the ordinary mascara first and thought it went on smoothly on the first coat. However, I like to apply several coats to lengthen my lashes and on second and third applications, it just went clumpy and made all my eyelashes stick together. It did nothing to lengthen or curl my lashes at all. The colour was very black, which may sound strange, but I think some mascaras are a more natural black. This wasn't natural at all.
It was tacky for a while and when it dried became "cakey" and crumbly. I deliberated as to whether to just take it off immediately and not bother, but eventually after separating my eyelashes a little, I decided to give it a go.
As the day wore on it felt ok, but when I went to look in the mirror, there were smudges and streaks where my eyes had watered a little.
It really reminded me of some children's make-up I had when I was about 10 because, after a couple of hours, I could literally peel it off my lashes like my children's peel off nail varnish! It just had no staying power at all.
As for the waterproof side, I must admit it was a little better in terms of texture and two coats went on quite smoothly. The only downside here was it didn't actually seem waterproof! It smudged with even just a little water and also didn't have much staying power.
A good point was that both mascaras were very easy to remove!!
A few days later...
I binned it! It had started to dry up already and the actual casing for the mascara had cracked where I had been putting the brush back in and it didn't catch properly on the screw mechanism, so it wasn't a very good quality casing.
To be honest, I thought it was just wasting space in my make-up box and was really glad that it only cost me £1.50! I would have been gutted if I had paid more.
I cannot fault the website and delivery at all. Very efficient. It's just a shame that the mascara didn't match up. I suppose for the money I may have been getting my hopes up a little too much, but I must say, I have had a better experience with the lipglosses so the mascara hasn't deterred me from E.L.F altogether. As for the mascara itself, stay away!
I bought this mascara in an attempt to cut back on my spending on cosmetics, as it costs only £1.50, which is far cheaper than most other brands, and I thought £1.50 is not a lot to have wasted if it's no good.
It looks quite nice in a simple clear plastic with a silver middle section. It is basically 2 mascaras, 1 at each end. At one end is the regular mascara, and at the other is the waterproof. It only comes in a choice of black or brown.
The brushes are both the same, and they are the regular kind of mascara brush with the bristles set out in a spiral pattern up the wand. It's also a regular sized brush, not too big or too small, which makes it easier to apply.
Both the regular and the waterproof mascaras go on pretty easily as the texture is not too thick, but I found them both to be really clumpy when I aplpied it. They didn't give my lashes anything other than colour, no length or volume to speak of, and the result was just darker, clumpy looking spiders legs effect. I've tried and re-tried using both ends of the mascara, using different ways of applying it, and it always just looks horrible.
The regular mascara smudges very easily and ends up giving me panda eyes within minutes of applying it, and the waterproof mascara is not waterproof at all. The waterproof doesn't smudge quite so easily, but it cannot withstand even the slightest drop of water so if your eye waters even slightly you've had it. The only advantage is that they both come off really easily when you want to remove them.
I would definitely not buy this again, it's just totally useless.
