E.L.F. Liquid Eye shadow - Sultry satin
Before I begin my review of the liquid eye shadow I wanted to explain what the brand ELF is and where to find them. ELF, standing for eyes, lips and face are an online store that sells makeup products for bargain basement prices. ELF offer a wide range of makeup from mineral makeup, to their own line of Studio based makeup and items from their basic makeup catalogue. What initially caught my attention (as well as a few glowing reviews on dooyoo) was the makeup price tags, most of all their items cost £1.50 or £3.50 (or some are somewhere in between unless you plan on buying any larger gift sets). Although the prices initially drew me in and tempted me to make that first purchase unless you get something that you like and would use it can't really be classified as a bargain no matter how cheap the product might be. As you might expect from a cheaper brand of makeup certain products and items differ drastically in quality, there are some that I really like while others have been a bit disappointing. To date, I have only placed two orders to ELF online (both over £30 to take advantage of the free delivery option) and more often than not I have been pleased with my purchases, this liquid eye shadow is one that I have been more than pleased with. If you are interested in trying some of the makeup for yourself you can find everything available at - eyeslipsface.co.uk. If nothing else I suggest you take a look.
This liquid eye shadow is really easy to apply and comes in a sort of lip gloss packaging with a wand type applicator. The applicator is very soft and good for applying onto your eye lid if you intend on blending it in. However, for more precise application then this does fall down a bit and it would be easier to use a better quality eye brush.
Although of course this eye shadow works perfectly well on its own I personally prefer to use this primarily on the inner of my eye over the top of a darker brown (Lancome single) eye shadow, because this works great at catching the light and makes my eyes look more awake. It is also a great eye shadow to blend in with other darker colours to create a slightly lighter shade or to just give my usual shade a slight touch of shimmer.
When I do apply this all over my eye lid (and I occasionally do) I sweep some over and you get a rather nice cooling sensation. After a moment or two, just enough time to allow it to go ever so slightly tacky before drying I blend it in, personally I find that using the tip of my finger works best for this. However, you do need to do this quite quickly because when the liquid eye shadow has set it can be a bit of a pain to get it to budge ever so slightly. Also I find that after I have applied the liquid eye shadow it is best just to close my eyes for a few moments while it dries to help it set without creases, it really doesn't take long to set only a few seconds. If you want a darker more noticeable and defined colour I allow it to set and then apply a second coat of the eye shadow over the top.
I own this in a beautiful light shade but I would be a bit dubious about buying it in one of the darker shades as it can be quite hard to get this to blend in properly and I wonder if the darker colour might take a lot more effort to apply evenly. However, there are a total of eight different (sultry satin, cream dream, coco loco, berrylicious, green machine, misty mauve, sexy silver and mocha madness) shades available and there are at least another four different colours that I am interested in trying at a different date.
The liquid eye shadow has quite a good longevity and although by mid afternoon the creases have well and truly formed I still think that it looks good for most of the day. I have yet to find an eye shadow that doesn't crease on my eyes and really this eye shadow is pretty average in this respect. However, it is quick to reapply because it is in a like a lip gloss applicator that is easy to carry around with you for touch ups. When the colour does set it does stay looking nice for quite a while and generally I have always been pleased with how it looks.
For the very small price of £1.50 you do get a pretty good liquid eye shadow and one that seems to be lasting me for months even thou I use it on quite a regular basis. However, for your money you do only get 1 gram of the eye shadow. ELF products tend to be smaller than what you would typically find from a supermarket or more expensive brand, but again for the small price I do feel that you get a good amount for your money.
Generally, I tend to stick to the more expensive brands of makeup as I have found in the past that my skin can react badly to cheaper alternatives. However, although ELF do deliver cheap products I find that the quality can be really good on many items, they do have some that may be on the lower end, but in my opinion this liquid eye shadow is one of the good ones. Personally, for the price I really think that this is a fantastic product and a good liquid eye shadow. If you fancy trying some of the ELF products then I can definitely suggest starting here, it is a cheap and cheerful alternative to buying much, much more expensive brands.
Overall, this gets a four out of five stars from me, I really like the light sultry satin shade and although I wouldn't recommend the other colours (largely because I haven't tried them) I do really like this colour and if you are looking for something similar then this is fantastic product for the price. This is one of the first ever liquid eye shadows that I have ever tried and I am sure that I will be back to try some more.
Summary: Four out of five stars
