E.L.F Nail Varnish
Advantages: A nice glittery finish, works well with other colours
Disadvantages: Takes a while to dry and the price has just risen!
Prices going up!
I have done one or two shops with online cosmetics retailer E.L.F. in the past, and have had pretty mixed results with their products, several of which I have reviewed. One product I am yet to review is the E.L.F. nail varnish.
For those of you who aren't familiar with E.L.F., it stands for Eyes Lips Face and is a company that was launched in America. As it has no high street presence it manages to sell the majority of its cosmetics for the super-cheap price of £1.50! Although I have noticed that recently the prices have started to creep up, and the nail polishes now sell for £2.50, although I paid £1.50 when I purchased my bottle a few months back.
The shade I have is called glitter glam. At a glance it is a bright silver shade, but up close it is shot through with tiny particles of glitter.
Pretty and glittery
The bottle itself is unremarkable - a rectangular shape with a chunky black lid. The brush is also pretty standard and this varnish is perfectly easy to apply - there is nothing either special or problematic here!
I have tried a lot of glittery varnishes and have had mixed results. Often I find that the varnish ends up being virtually clear with just a tiny scatter of glitter. This one, however, is different. Just one thin coat of this covers the nail in tiny glitter particles. If you put a coat of this on your nails on its own, it delivers a subtle but pretty silvery sheen that is very wearable and catches the light nicely. A couple of coats ramps it up nicely, and it gives the nails a lovely, shiny coat of silver that is glittery without being too over the top or overly glitzy - which may be a good or bad thing!
What I love about this polish is, because it's clear and full of little glittery bits, it doesn't matter if your application is less than perfect - you simply won't spot any wobbles or chips in this varnish as you would with a bright coloured shade. It goes on easily and quickly - you can really rush this one - and leaves nails with a nice sheen which, close-up, is full of tiny silver glitter particles.
The nature of the polish means that nails do look a bit "rough" even after the second coat and if you prefer absolutely perfectly manicured nails without a scuff or a scratch then these aren't for you, as the glittery finish can make them appear sort of uneven.
I think this varnish comes into its own when you layer it over another varnish. I recently applied this over a dark purple shade, and it really added some glitz and drama and it would have been ideal for a night out - dark and dramatic but with a nice touch of glitzy glam! And I have also used this over a pale gold shade too, and although I wasn't sure whether or not this would work it added a lovely brightness to the gold shade and again worked really well.
In summary ...
Overall I really like this nail varnish, and the only real downside is that it does take a little longer to dry than other varnishes I have tried. And despite the fact that the price has just risen, I do think this is pretty good value for money and is priced about right for a decent bottle of varnish. Worth a try!
Summary: A nice glittery polish
