A quick intro...
To begin with, for those of you who aren't familiar with this brand of cosmetics, ELF stands for Eyes Lips Face and is an online-only cosmetics company that was founded in the US and is now available here in the UK. The brand is famously cheap, with everything in its main range of cosmetics coming in at a mere £1.50.
There are also premium ranges of cosmetics available through the company's website, but prices are still reasonable.
I have tried a range of products from ELF, with mixed results...
This eyeliner is part of the ELF basic range and therefore costs £1.50. It's available in a wide range of colours from ivory to black taking in everything inbetween including green, bronze and purple. The eyeliner I'm reviewing here is Gunmetal - a dark silver shade.
This eyeliner promises to "instantly brighten eyes" and has a "smooth formulation that glides on effortlessly without tugging at the delicate eye area". It's designed to add depth, definition and a special sparkle to create a very glamorous look, according to the ELF website. You can apply it to either the upper or lower lashline, and you can blend and smudge the eyeliner as desired.
Above the line
In terms of appearance, this is a pretty bog standard eye pencil - neither too thick or thin. But one of the great things about these eyeliners is that they all have a sharpener in the lid! So you can simply put the cap on and twist the pencil and have an instantly sharpened end. For the low price, I think this is a great bonus and a brilliant idea - other cosmetics manufacturers should take note!
The pencil itself is a slightly shimmery shade of dark grey. It is quite soft and very easy to apply - it doesn't 'pull' the delicate skin around the eye area and it glides on smoothly. As it's quite a thin pencil you can draw a very thin and accurate line if you wish, and it is smudgeable if you want to have something a little less precise.
The colour is a nice dark grey but I wouldn't say it is particularly spectacular in terms of shimmer - it has a slight hint of silver glitter to it but it's not very noticeable to be honest. This isn't a massive problem for me - but I would definitely NOT recommend this for someone who is after something very eye-catching or glittery!
In summary ...
Overall, and for the price, I think this is a great eyeliner. It's easy and pleasant to apply and the colour is a nice dark grey which I think looks nice on the eyes and helps create a smoky eyed look. I would definitely purchase other colours in the range. However if you are after a lot of shimmer or glitter then this may not be your best choice!
One thing I use on almost a daily basis is eyeliner. I usually opt for boring black however recently I was given a 50% off order code (via email as I joined the site ages ago) to use on E.l.f.com which is an online cosmetic company that offers basically everything you could desire at really cheap prices (even if not on offer!) however do add £3.50 postage and packaging (if you don't get a free code for that of course!) however this fee applies no matter how many products you order and in my experience goods arrive within a couple of days which is brilliant!
This I ordered in my usual black shade (of course containing glitter so called Black Bandit) and in 'Twinkle Teal' (a sort of bright blue colour which contains glitter as do all these eye pencils).
All you get is a long pencil which is the colour of the colour you are using on your eyes. On it we are simply told that it is Elf, Eyes Lip Face, Shimmer Eye Pencil and the colour is stated on it. The plastic pull/on off cap covers the lid and contains a small sharp sharpener within it to which the outer section of the sharper sticks out allowing the wood shavings to come out of that simply. Its a nice looking, simple pencil this one and I adore the sharpener feature within mine and find it ever so handy!
The Pencil Itself:
Well of course as I have stated already this is an eyeliner pencil. In 9 different colours from black and white to green to pink the selection of colours to choose from is great and they all cost only £1.50 each which is great for such a long length product let alone the fact it has a stainless steel sharpener in the lid too!
This glides on simply and is rich in colour pigment with a slight glossy look to it once in place. It contains silver glitter particles which are sort of crushed and stay put within the colour given on the eyes. It isn't really transferable unless like any other eyeliner you rub your eyes or something and it stays put all day long without the need to reapply it. I have certainly applied this and left it on all day long and it has never cracked, dropped off glitter particles or irritated my very sensitive eyes at all.
This is easy to sharpen and great quality and being a 14g stick of colour lasts ages!
This is simple enough to apply though does drag slightly if not adequately sharpened (which is simple to do considering!) and adds a twist on otherwise dull looking eyeliner! A great buy!
ELF (Eyes Lips Face Cosmetics) is my new favourite make up brand. The products are inexpensive, long lasting and effective. The shimmer eyeliner pencil is in great quality. I think that it is better for you to buy ELF products in comparison to more expensive brands. I bought this product for 75p! That was a marvelous buy for me, because I bought it on the 50% discount on the website (which lasts until the end of July 2011). There are so many discounts and free deliveries offered on the ELF website, which makes the company even better. The reason why the products are so cheap is NOT because they are bad quality, it is because only small quantities of the product is given. But comparing the quantities of the product to the price, it is well worth spending your money on. Quality and cheapness, a perfect combination. This shimmer eyeliner pencil is wonderful for beginners and people that don't want to spend a lot of money on expensive make up brands such as MAC cosmetics. The eyeliner pencil gives a distinct line which makes your eyes shine, the product does not smudge (unless you make it like that). Once I wore this eyeliner out in the pouring rain, and it lasted.
I was introduced to E.L.F or Eyes, Lips, Face not long ago when I was looking to purchase some make up but was getting fed up of paying premium prices for less than perfect products. I had nothing to loose by giving them a go and when I seen the prices I couldn't complain. My first order had 20% discount and ever since that first order I have made 4 more, currently waiting to place another very shortly.
It was in my most recent order (delivered at the start of the week) that I received these pencils. With a 50% discount code I decided I would give them a try. They are a great price at just £1.50 each however with the code I got mine for a mere 75p each.
They come in simple packaging like the other basic ELF products, however unlike others these have a lid which includes a sharpener. Brilliant for two reasons, first is that you don't have to go on a hunt to find one and second, the colours don't get all mixed up, a brilliant addition that makes all the difference in my opinion.
There are a variety of colours available, I chose black with a shimmer, a teal colour and a pink one. As yet I have only tried out the black and if the others are as good I am very impressed. It glides on easily although it is a little rough, this is just down to the glitter that is included however. The pencils are a standard size and the lid stays on tightly.
I have tried no end of eyeliners and I have to say these are up there with the best of the bunch, there are not many that do everything you need but these definately fit that bill. They last well although in the heat they can run a little but to be honest this is expected.
I am very impressed by these and would definately recommend them. I can also vouch for the fantastic customer service. They sort problems out quickly and effectively, due to a problem with an order I received a free lipgloss for the inconvenience even though it wasn't a problem. They are exceptionally quick at delivering, with standard delivery at £2.95 more often than not I have received the products the next day through Royal Mail.
If you 'like' their facebook page they regularly have codes for 20% off and free delivery. Questions are answered quickly and effectively and they have competitions to win items often. At special points they have 50% off codes, sometimes for the full website, other times for certain portions.
I cannot fault E.L.F at all they are a brilliant company, excellent products and customer service and exceptionally quick, definately recommended for your make up needs!
E.L.F is a company that offer studio quality products for very low prices. As an avid E.L.F fan I am always happy to try new products from them. The shimmer eyeliner pencil glides on easily and has staying power. It doesn't smudge or flake and really makes the eyes pop.The eyeliner also has a pencil sharpener built in. All you need to do is put the end on the pencil and twist. Voila! Genius!I'd definitely recommend this product. It comes in a variety of colours too. Bargain!
I'm quite a fan of E.L.F cosmetics, most of them cost a measly £1.50 which I love because it means I can buy alot of different items and if I find I don't like them when they arrive I haven't wasted much money. For those who don't know E.L.F stands for eyes lips face and the website is www.eyeslipsface.co.uk. I've bought a number of different products from the E.L.F range over the years and just before Xmas I noticed they had some metallic eyeliners. Intrigued I ordered a grey one and a black one.
These eyeliners are called "shimmer eyeliner pencil" on the site and come in 9 different colours ranging from an ivory one, through the greens and browns to black so something for all eye colours there. They have a sharpener built into the lid which is something I don't like but more about that later. E.L.F say these pencils will glide on effortlessly and really highlight the eyes. I prefer to draw attention to my eyes rather than my lips so eyeliners are one of my essentials.
Once the pencils arrived I couldn't wait to try them. The paint on the actual pencil is more glittery than metallic which had me mildly worried these were more a glitter item designed for Xmas, however upon scrutinising the actual liner I could see no traces of the dreaded drag queen glitter.
These eyeliners do indeed glide on effortlessly with no tugging on the skin, they are probably the softest eyeliner pencil I've ever used and create a very defined look extremely easily. However this does also mean you have to sharpen them more often and the liner can easily be smudged so it's worth checking it every so often to ensure Alice Cooper's make up hasn't appeared on your face. To be honest though I can overlook those points because the metallic look is brilliant for really bringing out your eyes, it works much better for this than normal eyeliners and I was suitably impressed at how defined my eyes looked. In fact I was so impressed I went back and bought a teal one as well and that one is amazing for a more colourful look. I can't believe how much metallic eyeliners draw attention to the eyes and haven't used a normal liner since I bought these! They do indeed shimmer if the liner catches the light, but in a subtle way.
One thing I really don't like though is the sharpener on the lid. Not only is it fiddly to use but it also gets clogged up with the soft liner and needs to be cleaned. For that reason I don't use the lid sharpener and use a separate one instead. To have a sharpener in the lid is a bit of a design flaw I think although if you had this with you on a night out you could use it then but only if you can clean it afterwards or it will leave liner all over your bag. Not a great idea.
Overall though I love the effect these metallic pencils give, they go on easily and effortlessly and leave a lovely defined look behind. I can forgive the tendency to smudge as most liners do anyway but I'm dropping a star off for the sharpener and its problems. 4 stars and really highly recommended.
