During one of my fairly frequent vsits to www.eyeslipsface.co.uk (E.L.F) I found myself debating the studio lip stain. I don't wear lipstick, I can't be doing with the frequent applications and frankly my lips aren't my best feature so I don't usually highlight them. However the lip stain intrigued me, I wondered if it would stay put for a few hours as it claims so I could avoid all the messing about applying lipstick and getting it on rims of glasses and mugs so I decided to buy one. As it's a studio item it costs £3.50 instead of E.L.F's usual £1.50 and also comes in smart black packaging. For the price you get 6ml of lip stain in one end of the product and 6ml of lip gloss if you want to make it glossy in the other end.
There are 8 different shades of lip stain and as I don't like my lips much I went for a very subtle one called "Mysterious". That shade is almost nude so very subtle but the others range from pinks to oranges to reds. The idea is to apply the stain to bare lips so it dries on them and produces a matte finish which shouldn't budge, or apply the lip stain then once it's dry add lip gloss over it to produce a glossy finish. Apparently this has vitamins A and E to care for lips.
Once I'd read how to use the product I decided to apply some of the stain to see what happened. My shade is so subtle it's barely there so even when the stain is still wet it isn't easy to spot it. After a few minutes it felt dry and my lips looked totally normal except with a slight hint of colour. That's pretty much as dark as I like my lipstick to be so I liked the colour alot. I decided to put it to the test and see how long it stayed on. I can say a few hours later it still seemed to be there despite me eating and drinking but I made the mistake of applying lip balm that day which of course removed it. The instructions to remove this by the way are to use any cream or oil based make up remover so I'm guessing the oil content in the lip balm removed the stain. The next time I used this I resisted the urge to use lip balm and it stayed on for probably 3-4 hours before disappearing. A darker shade might still be visible after that amount of time though as it does stain your lips. The problem is the lack of moisture you get from the lip stain and if you have dry lips like me you will need the gloss too.
The gloss has the same kind of sponge applicator and smells like vanilla but tastes of nothing. It is clear so doesn't alter the colour of the lip stain and sticky like most glosses are. Obviously lip gloss doesn't stay on long as it transfers to glasses and mugs and just generally wears off and it also shortens the lifespan of the stain in my experience so in order to keep the colour you need to avoid the gloss.
Overall though I rather like it, the stain does tint my lips and stays on if I avoid lip balm and gloss and if I really need moisture on my lips adding the gloss makes it look lovely and shiny but shortens the stains ability to colour the lips by a couple of hours. For anyone who doesn't like the way lipstick feels or the way it needs reapplying so much this is a great alternative. A 4 star rating from me.
