Advantages: pen looks quite nice

Disadvantages: wore away quickly, felt scratchy on application

By my own admission I have never had a huge amount of luck with eyeliner. My lashes are blonde at the roots and it's very hard for me to apply a clean line without it looking like there is a gap between my lashes and the eyeliner - even when I have applied mascara to the base of my lashes.

I usually go for gel liners, but have also found in the past that the 'felt tip' type liners are easier for me to apply than a standard pencil. With this in mind, I decided to treat myself to one of their waterproof liner pens when I placed an order with budget cosmetics site ELF a few months ago.

I have blue/grey eyes and grey eyeliner seems to suit me better than black, but it can be surprisingly difficult to get hold of. I was pleased to see ELF made a colour called Ash, a dark grey shade, and this is the one which I purchased. Other colours available are black, coffee (mid-dark brown), midnight (dark blue) and plum.

The pen itself is fairly nice to look at. Housed in black plastic and with metallic silver writing, it looks basic yet there's something about it that makes it appear pricier than it was. The pen tapers in towards the middle, something which is practical as it aids grip as well as being pleasing on the eye.

The eyeliner has a tip which is very much like a felt tip pen and is very long and pointed. The tip is also very hard and I found that when I began to apply this, it felt quite scratchy on my eyelid and was quite uncomfortable. Even with continued usage, the pen tip didn't soften which was rather disappointing.

On a more positive note, it was quite easy to apply as it could get close to the lash line with the tip, but if you want a quite thick line, I think it could be difficult as this produces a rather thin line which is difficult to build up. The pigmentation of the eyeliner was really disappointing too. The colour looked very patchy and almost as though I had missed bits, so I'd have to go over it again and again to make it look smooth.

One of my biggest disappointments with the pen was the colour. I knew it was supposed to be dark grey, but I thought it looked too dark and was too close to black for my preferences.

I never really got the chance to find out if this product was indeed waterproof as it wore off so quickly. I would find that within around 2 hours of application it had disappeared completely -again hugely disappointing.

The eyeliner costs just £1.50 from website www.eyeslipsface.co.uk. Although that's cheap, obviously I would rather pay extra for something that does actually work!

Overall, I was not impressed - it looked patchy from the moment it was applied and seemed to have pretty much vanished within a couple of hours! I wouldn't buy this again and I would not recommend it to others.

Summary: Disappointing
