Advantages: nice finish if applied properly
Disadvantages: fiddly and time consuming
Elegant Touch gel nail kits are nail tip extensions. The box states there are two complete applications but as the 10 pairs of nail tips provided are of slightly varying sizes you may not get two sets out of this kit and should be prepared to need to snip or shape the tips to fit for a second application. The kit contains tips, glue, gel activator, clear gel overlay and file/buffer. The nail tip is glued onto the nail so that approx.' half you natural nail is still exposed. Next the gel overlay is placed over the whole nail and tip - this is like a very thick clear nail varnish and comes in a squeezable bottle making it difficult to apply. The whole area is then sprayed with the gel activating. After letting the nails dry you then file the whole area to remove bumps and ridges, repeating the gel overlay step if necessary. The smell is quite pungent, not unlike children's glue. This set is meant to provide nails which a professional finish that you can wear with clear varnish for a natural look. I find this nails very fiddly to apply, especially fitting nails to right hand if you are right handed and vice versa. The glue sets quickly and is extremely adhesive and can be quite painful if you catch you skin by mistake. It may be easier to get a friend to help apply them. Even when done painstakingly I've never achieved a finish that I would consider good enough to wear as 'natural'; I would only wear them with coloured nail varnish which helps hide any slight bumps. The tips are easily snipped or filed to a length and shape to suit your needs They are comfortable to wear and I find they last for around three days before beginning to lift. When they come off they often come off as a 'whole nail' as the gel overlay sets solid and is attached to the nail tip, therefore you can get away with gluing the entire nail back on. However, I have found they are prone to split vertically and then they are beyond
repair. They are easy to remove by soaking them for a prolonged period in warm water or after three days you can gentle force them off though this isn't recommended. I've found the price to be an average of £3+ from chemists and for this price there are a reasonable product for short term wear but expect to put a good three quarters of an hour aside to fit them.
