I received this as a Christmas present from my mum, she also owns this mascara and after her rave reviews I put this upon my Christmas list.
This is currently available on Amazon for a reduced price of £7.99; I think this is a very fair price for such product. Elizabeth Arden is a brand I know and trust, although some of the products can prove a little pricey. So for just £7.99 I think it's a total bargain. To purchase a mascara from a high street brand will set you back at least £10 so you can't go far wrong with this specific mascara.
The packaging has a very professional look to it. It is black in colour with the famous red door logo covering the entire box. All writing is printed in gold, this adds to the luxury of the product. Upon opening the box, the inside is totally red, which is what you would expect from an Elizabeth Arden product. You receive 10.25ml of mascara which is slightly larger than your average high street mascara I believe. The actual mascara is very plain, it has the door logo on the top, and the brand name printed in gold, but apart from that it is fully black.
The wand of this mascara is simply your average barrel brush. It consists of around 16 levels of bristles going from large at the bottom to tiny ones at the top. It looks nothing out of the ordinary, just your standard mascara brush. When removing the wand you do get a bit of excess mascara on the top, this is easily removed by simply wiping it on the side of the mascara tube.
To apply this is done like any normal mascara. The wand puts a thin layer on each lash individually, leaving a nice separated look. Not clumpy like some mascaras I've used previously. The mascara dries very quickly so you are not left with little black lines on your eye lid where you've blinked too quickly. Another common factor with many types of mascara. I normally apply 2 coats of this; which gives me a very defined look, with plenty of added volume. My lashes are given a nice natural curl, without the spider legs effect.
This mascara does last all day, which I was very pleased with. I haven't noticed any smudging and this has not irritated my eyes at all. Nor does this flake off, there is nothing worse than having little black specks taking over your face.
I'm unsure how much my mum paid for this but currently for £7.99 you really cannot go wrong with this. It is the best mascara I have ever used, and I have tried out A LOT of mascaras! I have had many compliments on my look since using this, and many of my friends have since purchased one too. It is very professional product, and you will not be disappointed I assure you.
Elizabeth Arden Double Density Mascara is a mascara I've been using for the past four months or so and I've been fairly pleased with it and have concluded that it's a high quality product for a relatively low price. It cost me just £7.99 from Boots, which is a very good price and if I can find it at such a good price again, I will be re-purchasing it once my current mascara runs out.
The packaging is fairly nondescript, but having said that, it's both functional and stylish. The mascara casing is a dark blue-black could and it has the Elizabeth Arden name on the side. The casing is quite chunkily and sturdy and it's unlikely to crack or become damaged if dropped. As with most mascaras, the wand is attached to the inside lid of the mascara tube - which makes storage and application very easy. In my opinion, the wand is a good quality, being not too chunky, but having small bristles which allows for great overall coverage of individual lashes.
The mascara itself is a nice dark black which is striking and doesn't fade with time. It's a good consistency, allowing for good overall coverage as it clings to the lashes without becoming clumpy. It doesn't make my lashes stick together, but again boosts their volume by increasing the volume of each individual lash. If I apply it in the morning, then I don't need to reapply it again until the evening and so last ability is very good.
Removing the mascara requires a good eye make-up wipe as it's quite stubborn to remove - but with the wipe it's very easy. I highly recommend this produce.
I am still searching (in vain it would seem) for the perfect mascara, but I honestly don't think it exists. I usually prefer mascaras in the Max Factor range and think I have tried them all by now yes, really). Recently though I started to use a Clarins mascara which I bought at a friend's Clarin's party and that has been quite good, apart from the fact that it is terrible to remove.
So, I was rather pleased to recieve on Christmas Day this year a great little gift set of various Elizabeth Arden cosmetics from a lovely relative who knows I'm a girl who likes my make up and enjoys trying out different cosmetics. I actually do really like the Elizabeth Arden range of cosmetics and had dropped (a few) hints, if I am honest!
As part of this gift set there was an Elizabeth Arden Double Density mascara in black (this also comes in brown/black, but as I have dark eyes I always prefer the darkest mascara I can get). I have had a lot of trouble trying to find a decent mascara that will lengthen, seperate, volumise and not look like I have clumpy spider lashes. I know it's a bit of a tall order, but I am sure the perfect mascara must exist somewhere.
Elizabeth Arden Double Density mascara comes in a plain back tube with distinctive gold lettering, it's fairly plain packaging but that doesn't bother me, it's the product inside I'm interested in. This mascara claims to be smudgeproof (though not waterproof), lengthening and thickening. I gave it a try the following day.
What did I think and what were my first impressions? Well, I like the shape of the brush and the fact that it is ever so slightly tapered towards the end, allowing me to get into the corners of my eyes without half blinding myself. The mascara was easy to apply and went on smoothly and appeared clump free. I have to say that this mascara did not thicken or give any noticeable volume to my lashes, but it did definitely lengthen them. To be fair, I prefer the longer look rather than the thicker look anyway, so this in itself didn't disppoint me.
The mascara lasted well all day and didn't flake or smudge. I wore it the following evening for a friend's Christmas party and again it lasted throughout the evening without me achieving the panda eye look. Removing the mascara was a doddle, no bother at all. just a few wipes with my eye make up remover and all traces had gone. This was a lot easier to remove than my Clarins mascara and a lot less time consuming.
Overall summary? Well, I do like this mascara but to be honest it is nothing special. It costs £20 for a full sized tube, which I personally think is a little on the steep side for what is essentially just a lengthening mascara. It doesn't thicken or add volume and it is not waterproof so I really don't think I can justify the price of £20.
It's nice but not wonderful but I'll give it three stars as I'm feeling a little bit mean.

I usually use Max Factor Masterpiece mascara, which I have been quite loyal to for many years, but occasionally I am given others, as was the case with the Elizabeth Arden Double Density mascara. I received this in a set from a friend along with a couple of other Elizabeth Arden products, but it sat unused for quite a while. Exactly two months ago just before I was due to go on holiday, my Max Factor mascara ran out. I spotted this in a drawer and felt that due to the small size (I have a half sized tube) it would be perfect for taking on holiday and have used it ever since.
==About the Mascara==
The mascara is described as being a long lasting, smudge proof mascara which separates and defines the lashes. It is not, however waterproof, which for me is a big negative as I often get runny eyes. The mascara is available in either black (which I have), black-brown or just brown.
The mascara comes in a black tube with gold writing. Despite frequent use the gold lettering has shown no signs of wearing off. The packaging to me is rather basic and unremarkable, however the gold gives it a very small touch of elegance.
Before applying I curl my eyelashes as I've found that without doing so the mascara can make them look quite short and stumpy. The mascara brush is densely packed with bristles and tapers towards one end. They are the standard type of bristles rather than the plastic ones I have become used to with my Max Factor mascara. What I have found is that the mascara is quite thick in texture, so I am often left with a lump of mascara on the end of the brush which has to be wiped off onto the side of the tube.
The mascara applies very easily and smoothly to the lashes and rarely clumps despite the fact it often looks as though there are clumps of mascara lodged between the bristles. One slight problem is that I do find the mascara quite 'wet' and it can take a few minutes to dry once applied. Last week we were getting ready to go out when I sneezed leaving a lovely imprint of my top lashes on my cheek!
I have actually been hugely surprised by the results achieved by this mascara. Quite simply, I love the look it gives. The first noticeable change to my lashes is that they look longer. In fact, to some degree I'd say the mascara gives a false lash effect in terms of length.
The colour of the mascara is very intense and the black really is black and not grey like some other 'black' mascaras. The colour is also very glossy, which again is something I like.
One thing that surprised me is that this doesn't really volumise my lashes at all, which is something I would have expected from a mascara called 'Double Density'. Instead it gives quite a feathery, natural look to the lashes, which is fine by me as I actually quite like that look.
In terms of longevity I have found the mascara to last well. I have never had it flake out (as often happens with Bourjois mascaras) and once it's dried after application it doesn't smudge either. Like I say though, not waterproof, which is a little disappointing for me.
==Price and Availability==
Like most things the price of this product varies depending on where you shop. On the High Street I have found that House of Fraser stock this for £20 which I feel is very high for a mascara - if I was paying that I would at least want it to be waterproof! If you go online, however Cheapsmells.com are selling it for a much more reasonable £8.75 which I think is closer to what it is actually worth.
A tube is 10.25ml and my half size tube has lasted approximately 2 months with me wearing it around four-five times a week. I think I'm coming to the end of it now though as it is starting to dry up a bit, so a full sized tube should last around 4 months.
I didn't think I would find a mascara I liked as much as my Max Factor masterpiece one, but I do really like this and am disappointed that it is running out. The only thing I think could be improved would be to make it waterproof, as for the price I feel that is a feature it really should have. Overall though, if you like an intense colour to your lashes with a feathery, separated look then I would fully recommend giving Elizabeth Arden's Double Density mascara a try.
Dear Miss Arden,
I have bought endless mascara's, all the latest ones to hit the shelves, the ones that promise you everything and in my case deliver nothing. I have wasted so much money trying to find a mascara that will give me the look I want for my eyelashes. I wanted a wand that wouldn't bend all the time, I wanted a thick bushy brush that would hold the amount of mascara I required. I wanted the mascara to go on just right first time, I wanted the mascara to not clump or smudge, I wanted to be pleased with how my eyelashes looked once my mascara was applied. I wanted my mascara to look great all day without having to reapply, I wanted my eyelashes to look big, full and dark..........
I got what I wanted because I bought this, your "Elizabeth Arden Double Density Mascara"
I didn't know who you were Elizabeth Arden, so I decided to find out about you, this is what I learned.
Having established the American Beauty industry a century ago and opening the first "Red Door Salon" in America in 1910, It is said that Elizabeth Arden, believed that every woman had the right to be beautiful and natural, it was her belief that science and nature intelligently used together would develop a woman's finest natural assets. She produced skincare products that would benefit and not mask the skin producing an 8 hr. cream that women not only needed but desperately wanted. She was the first to produce eye makeup for the woman of America. Being the first to develop trial size products and sent teams of trained travelling sales people and demonstrators out to promote the products further.
By the 1930's Elizabeth Arden had "Red Door Salon's" in all the main fashion capitals of the world and she proudly proclaimed "there are only three American names known in every corner of the globe: Singer Sewing Machines, Coca-Cola and Elizabeth Arden."
In all, Elizabeth Arden had created an Empire and a new industry, through all her determination and hard work. It has to be said, that the quality and excellence still remain the very soul of the Elizabeth Arden company today.
I was quite impressed with what I found out about you, I really wanted a great mascara that I'd be happy with, so I bought your Double Density Mascara. I'll tell you about how I got on with it.
This is the appearance and my experience with your mascara.
This mascara comes in a chunky black square shaped casing, twist and turn the lid to reveal a fabulous sized wand and brush, the wand is thick and sturdy, the brush, thick and bushy making it perfect to apply the mascara and so very easy as well. The amount of mascara you get inside is 10.25 ml. The texture of the mascara in my opinion is spot on, neither to runny nor to thick, a bit like goldilocks when she found the product she tested, to be just right. This mascara need only be applied once and it will last throughout the whole day, to apply, it is so easy and hassle free to do.
It doesn't smudge or clump your eye lashes together, even just one coat of this mascara looks fantastic. I get the exact look I want every time I apply it. I never suffer with black streaks running down my face due to the wind causing my eyes to run, which I have experienced many times before with other products. With no irritation to my eyes at all, this mascara only comes off when I want it to, with the help of a cleansing wipe, I cannot express enough how fabulous this mascara really is.
I had first tried it when my daughter gave me a sample size, straight away I loved it, when it had all gone I just plodded on with any old mascara but was getting more and more annoyed at the so called new glam mascaras, I couldn't get on with any of them. So when I finally decided I needed to get myself another Elizabeth Arden Double Density mascara, I couldn't find it anywhere on the high street, I ended up scanning the internet instead where I found to my delight, the exact mascara I was looking for. I got it from eBay for £6.49 but ended up paying around £8.00 due to postage and packing.
I am so glad I found you and your mascara, I'm giving it 5 stars because it's so fantastic, it has made me extremely happy and I will not hesitate to purchase it again.
Thank you for reading, this letter will more than likely be posted else where as well.
Thank you Miss Arden, yours sincerely
