A fabulous top coat - highly recommended

Nail polish is one of my little addictions. However, much as I love browsing through the gorgeous shades of nail polish, choosing a new favourite and having pretty polished nails, I don't always have the time I need to devote to doing them. My toenails are virtually always painted in the summer months - regular running has taken its toll on my toenails and I don't like to reveal them to the world in their natural state - but my fingernails mostly only get painted on special occasions. When I do get round to painting them, it is important to me that they look good for as long as possible - no point investi ng all that time and effort if they chip in the first few hours. So, I wanted a product which would make my polished nails that little bit tougher, while setting the coloured polish underneath. The product I chose was Essie's 'Good to Go' top coat.

Essie 'Good to Go' is a clear, rapid dry top coat. It is applied on top of your nail varnish, adding extra shine and enhancing the drying speed of your nails so that they are fully dry and chip-resistant within a few minutes. I always feel that if I have spent time doing my nails properly with a base coat, followed by a couple of layers of polish, then I want them to stay looking good. Without a top coat, I find that the daily trials and tribulations of life with two young children means that they end up chipping very quickly - just with everyday tasks such as helping my youngest get dressed, or doing the seemingly endless washing up that accumulates in my kitchen. With a top coat, the polish seems to last much longer and have a greater degree of resistance to those everyday chip hazards.

Application of Essie 'Good To Go' is extremely simple - you simply wait until your nail polish is touch dry. It doesn't need to be absolutely dry, just at a level where you can touch it without smudging the polish. You then paint a later of 'Good to Go' over the top, wait for a few minutes and then you literally are good to go. It is touch dry within a couple of minutes and completely dry within 5. The results are fantastic - the top coat adds a high gloss shine to the polish underneath, giving it a much more professionally finished look. I recently painted my nails in a dark pink for a party and had several questions about where I'd got my nails done as they looked so good. The best thing about this product is the performance. On average, without the top coat, I'd chip my nails within 24 hours of applying polish whereas, with the 'Good to Go', my nail polish will last for up to a week without chipping. Last year, my toe-nails survived a week's holiday with frequent trips to the beach and hours in the pool without a single chip - a miracle when you consider that some nail polishes seem to come off at the first sight of a swimming pool. Before the big party a couple of weeks ago they survived a full day of work, including dismantling large cardboard storage boxes and washing up without any chips or reduction in shine. The only reservation I would have about this product is that I haven't actually tried it over cheap polish - I have a range of Essie polishes at home and I have only used 'Good to Go' on top of these polishes. If the polish underneath isn't as good, then it is possible that the top coat wouldn't perform quite as well.

Essie 'Good To Go' is available from Boots for £8.99. It is also available from various online stores.

Overall this is a product which I would highly recommend. It is not the cheapest product on the market but the effectiveness of its performance means that it is good value for money. Basically, you get what you pay for - and for me, this is undoubtedly the best top coat that I have ever tried. I love the fact that my nails stay looking like I've had them done at the salon for so long, without the constant worry about chipping them - and I love the speed at which it dries. Definitely one that I will continue to purchase again and again.
