Mua Eyeshadow
by ChemicalRomance
Eye shadows now for me are an item that I use to subtly enhance my eyes on a daily basis rather than to cause shock - now on a night out that's obviously going to be a different story. So when I was making my make up academy order a few months ago - I wanted to add another subtle but pretty colour to my collection. I normally have very ... little preference to what colour I but for some reason since I was younger, I've had this thing where I love having pale pink eye shadow and lots of black eyeliner. At the time my mum called it my Alice cooper phase - which was lovely of her, however my love of pale pink eye shadow remains almost ten years on.
~*~ MUA ~*~
Make up academy as it's also known as, is another range of bargain cosmetics that are turning up on our high street. Found in Superdrug and online (they might be elsewhere but I haven't seen them) - they are a range that start at just £1 for an item, which considering the cost of more upmarket cosmetics is a bargain, and well we can't all afford to spend £25 on a mascara - no matter how good it is. So MUA for me along with ELF, has come a long way in my opinion over the past few months, and has some celebrity endorsement in the shape of Alexandra Burke, if that's celebrity endorsement! MUA is a good brand for beauty bargains, beauty basics and the occasional item that you would normally spend £10 on but can get it for £1 that's just as good. Don't write off, cheaper beauty brands because you never know what bargains you might pick up - without realising it!
~*~ Pearly Eye Shadow ~*~
I love a good soft eye shadow because there's nothing worse than applying something really harsh and full of bits to your sensitive eyelids. I've had eye shadows in the past that have been really harsh on my eyes, and when I've come to take it off at the end of the day it's really hurt my eyes. This one though in its black holder, with clear lid - with MUA 'Make Up Academy' and 'Eye shadow' written on it so you'll not be in any question as to what you've got, it's blatantly obvious! Flip open the lid and you get a fairly decent sized eye shadow in front of you - it's just the eye shadow though, you don't get anything like a brush with it at all it's just the eye shadow, but if you're like me you've got more than enough eye shadow brushes and the little padded applicators than you know what to do with!
Really given how much it costs you can't expect too much in your little packet of eye shadow - once you've got it open you can apply it with your fingers, applicator pad or an eye shadow brush. I find a brush makes it get a little bit too powdery for my liking and you find you lose a bit of the shadow as it becomes lose on the top. So I always use an applicator pad to apply this, because it doesn't leave anywhere as much residue on top of the shadow, so it will ultimately last me a lot longer than if I was using one of my eye shadow brushes. I have used my finger when I've been in a bit of a rush, but I find that if you use your finger too much the eye shadow gets a bit clogged up and it becomes really difficult to get anything off - because it's got moisture in it from your fingers - so my advice is don't use your fingers for eye shadow!
Application is really easy, just simple as wiping it over your eye lid - admittedly it'll depend on what kind of colour you have as to how much you need to apply. I normally make sure my applicator pads have a good covering across the entire head of them, and I can get relatively good coverage with just one application, it depends what else I've got on my eye lids though - with my pale pink eye shadow I normally have an eyeliner of some sorts on my lids as well, so I like to blend that in with the shadow, so I might find that I use two good applications per eye. Which is sufficient coverage to last me all day to be honest, I can put that on before a day at work, or a day out shopping and it'll still be there at the end of the day. For a night out I normally tend to apply a bit more on my main lids, and I'll have another colour as a highlighter so I try to apply more so that I don't have to take it out with me in my bag. Even on a hot night out, or at a sweaty gig I've never had to worry about it coming off it seems to stay put without one of those popular items out there that keep eye shadow in place. So when it comes to taking it off at night there is always something to take off - even if it's only a little bit there is still some colour left on my lids.
With the right eye make-up remover it's really simple to remove with a cotton ball, and it leaves my eyes settled and not in any pain at all. I've never found it to make my eyes red either, the fact it stays in place all day without needing any application makes me want a lot more of these eye shadows. My complaint about most eye shadows when I apply is that they end up under my eyes, especially ones that have a bit of glitter too them - it just never goes away. This one even though it's a pearl shade and it has a bit of glimmer to it doesn't do that, even if there is a bit of colour it'll wipe off with a damp cotton ball or a facial wipe and you don't see it again. This pearl shade that I own is lovely, it's soft, it's flattering, has a really reactive colour in the sunshine and you can barely tell it's there. All for £1 you can't complain at that really!
~*~ Price and Availability ~*~
This is available from MUA (Make up Academy) for £1 a palette, on line, or in Superdrug stores in varying colours, I'd be here all day listing them so you're best off having a look for the colour you want - but they are a bargain price for an eye shadow that I now wouldn't be without! Rimmel Glam Eyes Quad Eyeshadow
by katyj10
I bought what I think may be a limited edition Glam Eyes HD set from Rimmel which featured the quad of colours in the shade 004 Green Park. The unusual thing about this eyeshadow is that it is in the shape of a Union Jack.
Description
The Union Jack houses four different shades in green gold and brown although different ... colour ways were available. The set is cased in plastic with a hinged lid and you can see the colours through the clear top. Inside are four colours: A highlighter, a lid colour, crease colour and outer corner and there is a small diagram to show you how to apply all the colours.
In use
I loved all the colours in the palette, I was totally drawn to them and have used similar colours in the past to good effect. The green enjoys most of the space in the palette and is in a large cross shape. Next is the gold highlighter which has four diagonals and then the two shades of brown are in eight little triangles (four each). I use a small make up brush to apply eyeshadow and I have to say whilst it doesn't look that sparkly in the box, it is really iridescent on and catches the light beautifully. The colours are all really complementary with each other and create an amazing effect on the eyelid.
My thoughts
I loved the packaging at first but have been shocked by how good the actual product is, especially for the price paid (see below). I haven't used Rimmel in years as I do tend to gravitate towards more expensive beauty and make up but I have really been impressed by how good this compact is. I am tempted to go back and buy some more (in other colours) to play with. I have been using the same eye make up compact for months now and just wanted a change as some of my favourite colours are getting a bit low and I am so glad I found these.
Price
I found this special quad by Rimmel on sale in Poundworld and they had loads of them in stock, brilliant!
Final word
This kit is so versatile with four colours to choose from I can create lots of different looks and if I am going for it I can blend all four colours in to a totally eye catching manner. These are a bit shiny so not for the shy retiring types but used in a minimal way can be quite fetching. Layered up these give a fantastic foiled effect, particularly with a wet brush so if you want shiny eye make up you are on with a winner here. The shade I have 004 Green Park reminds me (in a nice way) of a lizard or to put it nicer, an exotic bird. For a pound you really can't go wrong! Read the complete review |
