“ Brand: Lancome / Type: Mascara / Suitable for: Eye / What it does: volumizeses, „
I absolutely love mascara and don't feel properly made up unless I am wearing some. I find it finishes a look properly and I especially love dramatic long dark lashes. I have previously tried some of this mascara before in a sample and was impressed but had some trouble with the thought of splashing out £20.50 for mascara, regardless of how good it was. While browsing the sales in my local independent department store I came across a fantastic set which contained a full size hypnose mascara, an eyeliner and a small size of their bi facil eye make-up remover too, all for the bargain price of around £15. For this I thought I had to snap it up especially as I was now fairly desperate for a new mascara.
=== The packaging ===
This mascara is housed in an attractive curvy tube (nice and feminine) and looks exactly like the picture above. It is gold with hypnose written in gold, accompanied with the usual gold rose that lancome seems to have as a kind of logo. This mascara is 6.5ml and can be used up to 6 months after opening, although I highly doubt it would still perform so well after such a long time. I think the tube looks elegant and fairly expensive as it should, and like all usual mascaras you simple twist off the lid which will reveal the mascara wand attached to it.
=== The claims ===
According to the lancome website ... Turn up the volume of your lashes for hypnotising eyes!
Control the look of your lashes - from subtle to sexy!
With our exclusive SoftSculptTM formula and patented Powerful brush, you can build up to 6x more volume...without caking or flaking.
Result? Truly hypnotic eyes!
=== Does it work? ===
I really like the shape of the wand. I can't really think how to describe it other than it is fat on the ends and thinner towards the middle, so is kind of curved a little bit like the shape of the tube. To apply, you apply like any other mascara. Simply wiggle over lashes until they are coated enough for your liking. I find this mascara very easy to use as although the brush is fairly thick it is not so thick that you worry you are going to poke yourself in the eye. I have also found this easy to coat my bottom lashes with which I feel is important as if I only coat the top lashes I look a bit strange. With some mascaras I find you can only apply one coat which gives you a set look and if you attempt to apply any more than one it goes all flaky and disgusting - not really a good look. However I have found with hypnose I can pretty much apply however much I like without it becoming flaky, looking caked on, or sticking all of my lashes together. One coat gives me a natural and pretty look, but I personally prefer to apply 3 coats or so which gives me a slightly more open eyed and dramatic look. I am very impressed with this as I feel like I have been looking for a mascara which does this for ages, and although I have tried many that claim to be non-flaky with multiple applications I have found none of them to be true to their claims.
=== How does it last through the day? ===
With some mascaras I have previously used I find that towards the end of the day I get some ugly specks of left over mascara just underneath my eyes which I absolutely hate. This mascara looks good all day long and I have never had any specks left underneath, even after wearing it for over 12 hours.
=== How long before I will need to buy mascara? ===
Although on the tube it suggests that this product can be used for up to 6 months after first opening, I highly doubt that it will be this long before I buy a new one. I find that with all mascaras because they are so constantly opened and closed with air getting inside that they can sometimes dry up fairly quickly. I would guess that this mascara would last me about 3 months before needing to purchase a new one which I think is about average.
=== Ease of removal ===
This is not a mascara that is easily removed by water alone as some are, and instead needs to be removed with a good quality eye make-up remover. I personally use Clinique take the day off which I find gets it all off pretty easily with no traces of panda!
=== Value for money ===
I think that for £15 (especially when I got other things too) that this mascara is amazing value. At the usual retail price of £20.50 I am not so sure. I still think that this is too much to pay for such a basic make up staple. I am happy to spend out more on something like a foundation but find it difficult to pay such a price for mascara.
Overall I am very impressed with this mascara and think that it lives up to its claims. It lasts well throughout the day and is easy to layer unlike some others while maintaining a good look; however the price is a huge negative for me. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't have a problem spending this much on a mascara but for me it is just too much. For the price alone I deduct one star and give this 4 out of 5.
Just before Christmas, there was an offer on at Boots offering the equivalent of £20 in Advantage Card points when two items of Lancome makeup were purchased. As I'd wanted a red lipstick for a while, I chose one from the range and for my second item I selected a mascara - I always need mascara after all!
Lancome was founded in Paris in 1935 by Armand Petitjean. Petitjean wanted to create a French beauty brand that would deliver elegance around the world. The name Lancome was actually inspired by the ruins of a castle, the golden rose logo stemming from the roses surrounding the area. The brand has been owned by L'Oreal since 1964.
The product I chose was the Hypnose Custom-Wear Volume Mascara. The idea behind this mascara is that you can control the volume of your lashes "for a truly hypnotic effect". The mascara is made with a 'PowerFULL' brush that intensifies your lashes: supposedly they can appear up to six times thicker, and perfectly separated. It is meant to go on smoothly with no clumping. The mascara contains silicone, glycerine & Vitamin B5 to keep lashes soft and supple all day.
***Price and Availability***
The mascara is at the pricier end of the makeup market and as such it is expensive, at £20.50. It is available from retailers such as Boots, Debenhams and the Lancome website. On the Boots site the mascara comes in two colours, black and brown, though it may be available in more colours elsewhere.
The mascara comes in a silver box, which I find rather wasteful although it does allow more information about the mascara to be displayed. There is a list of ingredients which I won't repeat here as it would be too long. Inside the box is one of the most attractively designed mascaras I've ever owned. The tube is black and curved, with a gold top and a gold rim surrounding the lid. The tube carries the Lancome and the Hypnose logo in gold lettering as well as two Lancome roses on either side of the lid.
***The Mascara Wand***
The mascara wand is pretty much a standard wand, there's nothing particularly amazing or special or noteworthy about it. It's easy to apply the mascara to both my upper and lower lashes using the wand.
***What's the mascara like?***
As mentioned above, I find the mascara very easy to apply with the wand. It's not just the wand though - I find the mascara just glides onto my eyelashes without leaving clumps and I can tell I am using a high quality product.
Using the mascara I can produce two looks - a more natural daytime look with just one coat, with defined, slightly thicker and slightly longer lashes, and a more dramatic night time look with two or more coats. This is ideal as I find some mascaras create a nice daytime look, but don't do so well at night, or vice versa. I like that this one does both.
I find that the mascara lasts all day without running, coming off or being disturbed at all. Even when I go to the gym it doesn't come off, which is impressive, although it comes off easily enough when I use eye makeup remover. The mascara isn't described as waterproof, but it does a good enough job for me.
Even though I've had the mascara for a few months, it hasn't gone clumpy, dry or flaky. It still goes on as well as the day I got it.
Overall I really love this mascara, and would go as far as to say it's the best I've ever used! I love the way it goes on, the way it looks, and even the packaging. The only bad thing is the price, but I would consider paying this again as the mascara is so good. I would prefer to wait for a special offer though!
There's not a lot that Kate Middleton and I have in common, but one of them is our favourite mascara. Like Kate, I'm a big lover of French cosmetic giants Lancome Hypnose.
I was first introduced to Hypnose by a work colleague, who used to work on a fancy make-up counter that wasn't Lancome, and also produces some top rated mascaras. (I won't name it directly, but it starts with a Y and ends with SL). She informed me that all the workers in the department stores she worked at were often not wearing their own mascara, but Lancome Hypnose. Seeing a gift set reduced in Boots I acquired a tube, and has been my fancy night out mascara ever since.
Lancome Hypnose has classic packaging, the curves resembling a woman in a long, floor-sweeping black dress, the gold edging, just adds a touch of luxury. The curves are not only aesthetically pleasing, but make the mascara easier to get hold of.
The length of the brush plus handle as a whole feels the right distance away from your face to easily apply to the eyes. The brush itself, as pictured, is about 5cm in length, not curved like Hypnose Drama, with small bristles for perfect lash separation. This does make it quite a long brush, but is not as broad, so doesn't get in the way as much as some mascaras, Benefit's Bad Gal Lash springs to mind.
The formula is not too thin or gloopy, and glides through lashes, one coat gives a natural look eyelashes appear blacker and thicker, drying time is about average with virtually no of clumping. A second coat seems to thicken lashes further, adding length and the hypnose effect. So what alluring effect does this give? Don't ask me how, no other mascara has ever done this, and no I don't curl my lashes, it truly fans the lashes, to give an almost feline look. This clever illusion makes eyes appear wider, drawing others in, hypnotic as Lancome may say. This is why I prefer to reserve this as a special mascara, rather than everyday.
The mascara wears well at about 8 hours, and is easily removed with normal eye make-up removers. There is no flaking, I have a big problem with this, as I rub my eyes all the time, and find very few mascaras that suit.
This mascara has won scores of awards including: Winner of In Style Best Beauty Buy 2004 and Elle 2005 Beauty Grand Prix and did I mention this was supposedly Kate Middleton's mascara of choice on her wedding day!
This mascara can be purchased through various retailers online, and can be found in large department stores including Boots.
My recommendation is to wait for a Lancome deal, if you have other Lancome pieces that you wanted to try out, or alternatively wait for the Christmas sales. Post Christmas Boots give a third off the giftset with a travel Bi-Facil and kohl pencil. This works out significantly cheaper than the mascara alone, and you get extra products, both of which I recommend. So far I am onto my second gift set, and using this mascara as my special wear one, I can make it last the year.
The price for this one is a little steep at £20.50 for 6.5ml of product. However, saved as a night mascara, due to the slightly unnatural (in a good way) and dramatic effect, this product is worth its weight in gold.
I was tempted to knock a star off for price, but at about £14 for the set, £4 more than a Max Factor, I do think that this product is a fair deal.
One of my ultimate goals in life (I understand my next statement will show how little ambition I have ;)) Is to find a range of beauty and bath products which are my 'staples'. The things which I HAVE to go and buy again when I run out. Sadly, I am still searching for most of my 'staple' products, but happily- I have found my mascara in Lancome's Hypnose Volume Custome Wear mascara.
I first used this mascara when I was given a trail size as part of one of Lancome's 'giveaways' when you purchase certain items. Straight away Iwas hooked. The beauty of this mascara is the ability for you to choose how much volume and drama you need. One coat gives subtle yet defined coverage, suitable for general wear during the day but if you add a few extra coats *POW* mega volume. What finally sold it to me was a picture I had taken of me on a night out. My eyes looked amazing (and I don't normally like photographs of myself) It almost looked as if I was wearing false eyelashes- that's how long and defined my eyelashes looked.
The only drawback I can think of for this product is it has a tendency to get a bit gunked up at the top of the bottle, meaning you have to do that scrapey thing with the brush to remove the excess of mascara on the brush before applying. Not great considering the price point of this product.
On to price- this mascara is currently retailing at around £20 at most departments stores and Boots which have a Lancome concession counter.
I like the packaging of Lancome products as they are good quality and look quite stylish with their sleek black finish. I'm not embarassed to whip it out of my makeup bag for a touch up
L'ancome Hypnose is my all-time favourite mascara! I wear mascara nearly every day and always like my eyelashes to look full and black with no clumps or smudging. I have tried so many different products on the market ranging from the very cheap to the high-end, but will always return to L'ancome Hypnose as it manages to achieve exactly what I am looking for.
The company claim that the mascara contains ingredients that actually moisturise your eyelashes and I can definitely say that my eyelashes always remain soft and not flaky or brittle as some mascaras can make them go. The mascara never clumps and always coats each lash individually so that your eyelashes look really full.
The first coat achieves what I would call a more natural look and what I would normally wear in the daytime; if I was going out in the evening I would usually put another two coats on to achieve a really dark look. What also impressed me with this mascara is that there is minimal smudging and such good staying-power!
Unfortunately this mascara does not come cheaply, usually costing around £18 in department stores, although in my opinion the price is justified and I think it should be seen as a quality investment. It should also last a decent amount of time (I wear mascara every day and a tube usually lasts me around 1-2 months).
I would definitely recommend L'ancome Hypnose!
In my never-ending hunt for the perfect mascara, I decided to splash out and try a slightly more expensive brand to see if you really do get what you pay for. As I was living in Paris at the time, it seemed only fitting that I should choose a French brand. Of course, that only narrows the choice down slightly, and I spent hours looking at (and lusting after) most of the products - Chanel, Dior, Estée Lauder, Yves Saint Laurent...and Lancôme.
== Why Lancôme? ==
I can't really say what made me choose Lancôme over some of the other French brands. I guess that packaging had a lot to do with it, as well as looking at the wands and what the different mascaras had to offer.
A friend had already tried a Chanel mascara, and I didn't feel too excited about trying any of their products, I didn't like the look of the Dior mascaras, nor Estée Lauder, and the YSL mascaras, although they look pretty good, had pretty out-there packaging, which eventually made me go for the very professional, chic looking Lancôme. Hypnôse seemed to be its main mascara, and so this is the one I plumped for, in black.
== The Promise ==
This mascara promises to give up to 6 times more volume, as well as 'intensifying the lashes from root to tip'. It also claims not to smudge, smear or clump, thanks to its SoftSculpTM formula enriched with vitamin B5 and the patented PowerfullTM brush. We shall see...
== Packaging ==
The mascara comes in a silver box carrying all the product information.
The mascara itself is in a very curvaceous mascara bottle, which is black and glossy all over. It has a gold rim around the lid fixture, and gold writing showing the brand and product name. There's even a little rose - the Lancôme symbol on the lid.
As packaging goes, it's fairly functional - the lid clicks off with ease and you hear it click when you replace it. This gives good piece of mind that it's not drying out because you have unwittingly replaced the lid incorrectly. However, this mascara will roll if you put it down, and though the end is flat, it won't stand up. Even with the smallest handbag, if you want to make room for this mascara, you will be able to.
Overall, the packaging still looks pretty chic and has dealt well with the wear and tear I've inevitably inflicted on it. The rim is starting to chip a little bit, but the gold writing hasn't faded at all.
== The Wand ==
It's been a while since I invested in a mascara with an old-school wand. Most of the mascaras on the market today tend to come with a comb or some flashy, new applicator. Lancôme Hypnôse is part of the old school mascaras. However, the wand is curved in a similar fashion to the bottle itself. The bristles are not too long, which means they don't get over-gunked with mascara, and so it doesn't need to be actively wiped on the side of the opening. Inevitably, this happens automatically when you pull the wand out anyway, so the opening does get a little overloaded. Having said that, it's not as bad as I've experienced with other mascaras, and it doesn't make a mess all around the lid, which is good.
== Application ==
Applying the mascara is fairly straightforward. The wand doesn't separate the lashes but doesn't clump them together either, although the ergonomics of the wand are not necessarily conducive to easy application in the corners of the eyes. Still, with a bit of manoeuvring you can get in there, and it's worth it.
== Removal ==
Taking the mascara off is not too tricky either, a few wipes of an ordinary face wipe gets mine off without too much trouble, so I'd imagine a purpose-made eye make-up remover would make this even easier.
== Durability ==
The real question with removal is, does the mascara come off before it's supposed to? Unfortunately, it can do. If you rub your eyes, then inevitably your eye make-up is going to suffer. However, I've found that I don't do too much damage when I rub my eyes wearing this mascara. I've just rubbed my eyes with this mascara on as a test, and a couple of flakes appear on the palm of my hand...and yet, when I look in the mirror, the mascara is still there. Normally I'd expect to see it smudged all around my eyes, but it's still on my lashes. Unfortunately, the overall effect is no longer the same, and the lashes have lost some of their curl, but I'm just so impressed that the colour is still there and not all down my face! If, by some miracle, you do manage to avoid any contact with your eyes, you'll find that this mascara will last well. You may need a touch up if you're going from day to night, but it'll last through either the day or the night very well.
This mascara is not waterproof, and nor does it claim to be, but it won't be too much of a disaster if it does come into contact with water. Once again, you might need to touch up a little bit, but it won't be a catastrophe.
***UPDATE*** I wore this mascara on an evening out for an anniversary meal with my boyfriend, when I just so happened to have the sniffles. My eyes tend to water quite a lot when I get a cold, so I was really able to put this mascara to the test. I was incredibily impressed, to say the least, despite my left eye watering for most of the night my mascara stayed perfectly intact. I paid extra care to wipe my eyes carefully though. Once I got home I was less careful, but still, the result is impressive. Yes, the effect has worn off a bit, but I don't have mascara all down my face, in fact, I don't have any mascara around my eye at all - it hasn't even come off on my fingers. It's reassuring to know that this mascara does its utmost to make sure I look a hell of a lot better than I feel! BIG thumbs up!
== Wearability ==
Another important to factor to consider is how pleasant a mascara is to wear. Once you first apply it, you can feel it very slightly. Within a second or two, it's as though you're not even wearing mascara. It takes a minute or so to dry, as I've just found out from touching my lashes around 10 seconds after applying. However, I can deal with a bit of mascara on my finger, what I'm looking to avoid is ending up with mascara on my eyelids from looking up, and this has never been a problem I've suffered from with this mascara.
It doesn't irritate my eyes at all, it's just unfortunate that I'm someone who rubs my eyes when I'm tired. However, I don't wear contact lenses and I don't suffer from particularly sensitive eyes - two things which could affect how irritable this mascara is.
The mascara itself lasts really well - I still have the first bottle I ever bought of this and it does not appear gloopy at all. I don't use it any more, because it's been well over a year since I bought this and that would be rather ill-advised. It is recommended that you dispose of your mascara after six months, to avoid build-up of nasty bacteria which, if applied to your eyelashes, could get into your eyes. However, I used the mascara over the six month period on an almost daily basis and it lasted very well. I've never actually known a mascara to run out (has anyone?) but rest assured that you can get some heavy usage out of this before you need to dispose of it. If anything, it's a little bit heartbreaking to throw something away which isn't completely used up (probably one of the reasons mine has been relegated to a drawer at home - other reasons including sentimentally, sad I know!)
== Result ==
So, how do I actually feel about this mascara? I'm really really pleased with it. I'm still holding out the hope that there is better to come, but I will happily wear this as part of both a day-time look and an evening ensemble. The colour is really dramatic, and when teamed with eye liner and eye shadow can really draw attention to the eyes.
The mascara adds a little bit of everything - length, curl and volume, although nothing like as much volume as it promises. The colour is the main thing that makes this mascara so great though - it really does make for a very dramatic look, especially if you add several coats.
When you're wearing just mascara, it makes a subtle enough day-time look, which I regularly go for.
The one negative thing about this mascara is that when I have one of those annoying eyelashes that hangs down over my eye, it gets a good coating of mascara, but it doesn't budge and so becomes even more obvious. It's a bit of annoyance, but is true of every mascara I own, have ever owned, and probably will ever own.
== Price and Availability ==
Although definitely not cheap, I think it is worth paying a little bit more for a decent mascara. I can't vouch for all expensive mascaras, but I do rate this one.
If you're not entirely convinced about forking out so much money on a mascara, it's reassuring to know that Lancôme often do packs containing several products, and normally they're a very good deal. Boots has one such pack selling for £19.50, which is actually the RRP of the mascara itself. Although I can't find the individual mascara on the Boots website, I know that it can be bought in store. The packs are much harder to find in store, only selling at certain times of the year, so if you have to find them in stock online or in store, I'd advise you to snap one up. I've also seen them in Debenhams and other department stores - Selfridges, John Lewis as well as others.
There's also plenty of websites selling this mascara, for a range of prices. The cheapest I've seen is £11, I think I paid around £14 for mine.
The mascara is available in black and brown and there is a waterproof version available.
== Overall Opinion ==
I have heard negative things about Lancôme mascaras in general since purchasing, but I think it really depends on what you look for in a mascara, and what condition your lashes are already in.
I don't have the longest or naturally curliest lashes, but I'm really pleased with the results of this mascara and it's something I would buy again (In fact, I already have). I'd definitely recommend this mascara as I think it makes a great base for eye make-up. It can be worn alone for a great day time look, or built up with eye liner and eye shadow for a dramatic evening look that will last.
I'm also very impressed by its durability, particularly under certain conditions. It doesn't claim to be waterproof, and yet it doesn't just automatically stream down my face whenever it comes into contact with water. It doesn't like it when I rub my eyes, but it doesn't punish me by flaking all down my face.
I feel like all of the good points far outweigh the negatives of this mascara and it doesn't necessarily deliver 100% on its promises, I certainly don't feel like I'm getting 6 times the volume, but I'm nevertheless very happy with my purchase.
4 and a half out of 5, which I've generously rounded up for the sake of the star rating
I got one of these Lancome Hypnose mascaras for Xmas and love it already even though I've used a different Hypnose mascara before and wasn't very impressed with it for the price.
My mascara is in black but you can also get it in brown, extra black or a glittery black which might just be available for Xmas as it's not showing up in all the Lancome searches I've done even though it was back in November.
I've glad I was given the black one because it's so glossy and makes my lashes look mega thick. The tube for the mascara is curvy and that makes it easy to hold onto the wand when you come to apply it. The mascara goes onto my lashes proper nice and even though it's a dead thick mascara it is smooth and silky to apply. The brush helps too because the bristles are spaced out quite far and they feel softer to the touch than other mascaras I've used.
I use 2 coats when I'm going out because I love a thick glossy effect on my lashes and with this mascara you don't need to use any more than that or you'll end up looking too overdone. During the day 1 coat is fine but personally I still think that's a bit blatent for me because I prefer a more understated look for popping into Asda or taking my sister to playgroup! lol
It's also a very easy mascara to remove, I use a special eye make up remover from Boots and a quick wipe of it on a cotton pad is enough to get most of it off and then the rest will come off using another wipe of remover or even soap and water because it's not a waterproof mascara.
I think this mascara is brill, I love it already. It's easy to build up colour and once applied it makes my eyelashes look so glossy and thick that I can't believe they're mine! lol I did put 3 coats on the other day just to try it out and it looked way too heavy for me, but I reckon if you prefer the heavily made up look for going out then you'd easy be able to get the effect you're after.
Lancome mascaras are not cheap and this Volume Custome Wear is no different, it costs about £20.00 depending on where you shop for it but now I've used it there's no looking back for me and I'll deffo buy another one.
I am a huge fan of Lancome mascaras and have tried l'extreme and definicils which I both loved before this one.
I have the hypnose mascara in brown, although I had to check twice that it was brown as it is very, very dark, almost black on. It is also available in black, black waterproof and onyx, which is a sparkly black.
The mascara is very easy to apply. The wand is nice and chunky and it's very easy and quick to run through your eyelashes. The effect is immediate. My lashes appeared much thicker, fuller and darker. I found one coat was enough for the effect I wanted. I bought this mascara for daytime wear but the effect is quite dramatic and is probably more suited to evening wear as I like my make-up to look quite natural in the daytime.
Now I have had the mascara several months I am finding it has started to dry out and leave clumps in my lashes, but this is my fault as you are supposed to change your mascara every 6 months and I've had mine for longer than this.
I find the mascara very easy to remove at night with ordinary soap and water. If you accidentally rub your eyes throughout the day you do get a 'panda eye' look. Other than this it stays on pretty well all day long.
I buy my mascara on feelunique.com and pay just under £15 for it, which I think is a really good price for a high quality mascara.
Overall I would definitely buy this mascara again, but in black for evening wear. For a daytime look I will stick with l'extreme or definicils mascara.
Hypnose volume custome wear mascara is truly a brilliant product, I have fairly rubbish spidery lashes and swear by this mascara to turn my unnoticeable eyes into something beautiful and breath taking.
I find the brush to be both substantial and comfy on the eye, it is also brilliant for separating lashes out perfectly. Of course being Lancôme you can expect a certain amount of quality from this mascara, it is great for sensitive eyes and has no odour like some other make up often has.
It is available in different shades, I believe a black, brown and a blue shade. I find the black to be the best for my dark colouring both skin tone and eye colour, also best when trying to create a smokey eye effect.
This product is pricey compared to cheaper high street brands, I have bought mine duty free on occasions, at the airport as you can also get it in a handy travel set with a fantastic lancome pencil eyeliner and lancome eye make up remover for sensitive eyes. to buy directly from the lancome uk website, this mascara is £19.50, however I have seen this on two other websites for £14.99 with free p&p, Bargain!
Moreover it does last you a lot longer! I find that one tube of this mascara can last me up to 5 months, and believe me I do apply it liberally especially for a night out!
My only problem with this mascara is that it is so thick, you must use a really good makeup remover to get it off. Also, never accidentally fall asleep with it on because it will be there in the morning! It really will stay on, I even wear it when i go swimming.
Overall this product will not let you or your lashes down :)
