“ Brand: L'Oréal / Type: Eyeliner / Suitable for: Eye „
It was only last year that I began wearing make up regularly. I had a book published, so felt I had to look a bit more glamorous when I was signing at events. My eyes are my best feature, despite wearing glasses, so I usually concentrate on eye make up. I bought eyeshadow, mascara and a cheap eyeliner from our local chemist.
A couple of months later, I realised the cheap eyeliner was making my eyes quite sore. I have sensitive eyes anyway and as hayfever season approached, I decided it was a good time to invest in a really good quality eyeliner which wouldn't irritate my eyes. I was shopping in Tesco and had a browse of the make up they sell there, which includes a wide variety of brands and prices.
I wanted a black one and as I find liquid eyeliner very hard to get right, I wanted the pencil sort. I also wanted to buy a good quality brand. The one I ended up buying was the L'Oreal Indefectible Retractable Eyeliner pencil in 301 Night Day Black. As well as L'Oreal being a brand I trust, it boasted it is waterproof, suitable for sensitive eyes (and contact lens wearers) and lasts up to sixteen hours, so I figured it might even survive my runny eyes during the hayfever season.
On one end, you turn it to bring the pencil itself to the top and there seems to be a generous amount here. There is a plastic cap to cover this and keep it clean too, which also has a smudger. The other end contains a pencil sharpener which is fitted into the lid and this was the final reason I chose this eyeliner. I find it annoying having to root around for a pencil sharpener when your eyeliner goes blunt, so the idea of this coming with its own was a huge selling point for me. (I have only had to use the sharpener once so far and it does work, but the pencil can come off a bit more than you want it to and it is quite fiddly, so you need to consider this.) Looking online, this eyeliner seems to be available from £4.75, but I seem to recall paying around £8 for mine.
It is very easy to apply and provides an even coverage and a lovely dark black colour. I am really happy with how this looks when it is on me and I feel more confident, as my eyes appear more defined. If you want a softer smokier look, you can use the smudger supplied to get this effect, but I prefer just using the pencil for a stronger colour. It doesn't irritate my eyes either, though it does go a bit smudgy when my eyes are really watering, so I am not completely convinced it is 100% waterproof.
I have tried this on my fiancé's eyes, just to see how it would look. He had never worn make up before (and doesn't ever intend to again!) and his eyes were running a lot, but I think it was just anxiety. When I finally applied it under his eyes, the effect was really good, quite Johnny Depp! (Phwoarrr!) He even had to admit it did emphasise his eyes well. He also noted it was quite hard to remove and despite scrubbing with make up remover wipes, it was still slightly visible the next morning. As he is an electrician, he thought wearing eyeliner would not really go with his job, so once again had to wash his face well to remove the final traces. So in this case, its staying power seems to have been proved.
I am very happy with this overall though and would buy it again. It is handy to have all these things (eyeliner, smudger, pencil sharpener) in one small pencil, which fits easily into a make up bag. It is also safe to use for two years and it lasts very well anyway, as I have used it several times a week for four or five months and there is still plenty of pencil left.
As well as the black I have (Night Day Black), you can also buy this in Shimmering Black, plus a grey (Grey Obsession) and a dark brown (Chocolate Addiction).

*** A BIT ABOUT EYE LINER***
Eye-liner is used to define eyes and this can be done in many different ways. Eye liner was first used in Ancient Egypt as a dark black line around the eyes. In the 1960's liquid eye liner was used to create thick black and white lines around the eyes in makeup fashion. In the late 20th and early 21st century, heavy eyeliner has been associated with Gothic & sometimes Punk fashion. Today eye-liner is used by many make up artist's and other people to create Smokey eyes and to help make eye's look more defined. Eye liner is available to buy in liquid, powder, Wax Based pencils and Gel eye liner. These different eye liners are used to create different look and styles.
I have used many different eye-liners by many different brands and some of them don't seem to smudge very well or they wear off half-way through the day and I have to re-apply the product again. Sometimes eye liners can also irritate my eye's as well making them dry and sore. I am yet to find that perfect eye-liner that is long lasting and easy to apply.

***INFAILLIBLE EYE LINER**
This eye liner is available to buy in 4 different colours including Shimmering Black, Grey Obsession, Night Day Black and Chocolate Addiction. The eye-liner is a creamy, smudge tip eyeliner pencil which is perfect for creating a Smokey eye look. With the built in sharpener this means you can draw a precise even line. The eye-liner is long lasting for up to 16hrs, and doesn't fade.
The eyeliner itself is the length of standard eye liner pencil but is plastic rather than wood like other eye-liners. At one end of the liner it has a white rubber smudge tip to help create Smokey eyes. This is covered by a small clear lid which protects it from getting damaged and dirty. The other end you will find a plastic pull off lid which protects the eye liner. Simply twist the eye liner after removing the lid and this will move the eye liner down ready to use. You can also twist the eye liner back up again to protect it from being damaged or in case you twist down too much of the eye-liner.
This is available to buy from Boots and Superdrug for approximately £4.99 but sometimes this product may be on offer with other products within this brand/range.
***USING THE EYELINER***
The eye-liner twists very easily to reveal the eye liner in a small slightly pointed stick which is then ready to apply. The pencil was comfortable and easy to hold and applying the eye-liner was very easy. The colour glided onto my eyes very easily and I didn't need to use any pressure or go over the lines again to make them darker. You could of course go over them again to create a darker look though! I then popped the lid back on and got ready to use the smudge tip. The smudge tip is smooth and soft and has a slight point to it as well so you can really concentrate on smudging certain areas.
As I began to smudge away my eye's started to look Smokey and the eye-liner looked softer and not so harsh. The smudge tip was very easy to use with minimum effort to blend and create a Smokey look. The smudge tip does get dirty, but this can be cleaned off easily using a baby/facial wipe or even just a rinse under the tap will clean it.
***IS IT LONG LASTING?***
I applied this before going to work in the morning and when I looked in the mirror on my lunch-break my eye's still looked nice and Smokey and the eye-liner hadn't smudged or worn off and I was very impressed. I didn't experience any eye irritation with this eye-liner. After a long, hot day at work I got home and took my make up off before bed as normal and when I looked in the mirror I was impressed that after a day at work, which was quite warm the eye-liner still looked great and hadn't smudged unlike some other eye-liners I have used before. This eye-liner is definitely long lasting like it states on the eye-liner itself and on their advert. The eye liner was easy to remove with normal facial wipes or even with baby wipes with no irritation to my eyes.
I prefer using a pencil rather than this type of eye-liner how-ever I was so impressed at how easily this glided onto my eyes and how long lasting it was I would definitely buy it again. The smudge tip is also a great idea to create Smokey eye's and is a bonus as it comes on the end of the eye liner so is great for taking on the go or for popping into your bag. I haven't yet worn this eye-liner for a night out but I'm pretty sure this eye-liner would stay put with no need to apply through-out the night. Although this eye-liner was quite pricey I think its well worth the money as its good quality and does exactly what it says. If you are looking for a new eye-liner I would highly recommend this one for easy application and staying power!
(I think this product has changed name as the picture and review's, sounds exactly the same as the this product!)
(Review also on ciao)
I am a big fan of this eye pencil.
I didn't use eyeliner at all until about 3 or 4 years ago due to various failed attempts at applying it, I then started to use the normal pencil type ones which I managed ok with and I sometimes tried the ones which are a bit like a felt tip - which just made me look silly! It's fair to say that applying eyeliner isn't a natural skill I have!
However, since I have been using this one by L'Oreal for the last couple of years I have found it much easier. I agree with the other review done on this that it is nigh on impossible to sharpen it, hence one of the reasons why I am only giving it 4 stars not 5, as most people will want a sharpened eye pencil! Personally though I like it just as it is, I like a fairly thick line of eyeliner as when I use it I want quite a dramatic look - if I wanted a more natural look then I just wouldn't use any at all to be honest!
It does stay on very well, which is another reason for me singing it's praises, it doesn't smudge or smear or rub off. I find L'Oreal gentle eye make up remover does the trick when you do actually need to get rid of it. There is a sponge on the end for smudging it, if this is a look you want to achieve, but it is tricky - the other reason I am only giving it 4 stars, not 5. I never bother with smudging it anyway so it doesn't matter to me personally.
At around £7 a pop it's more costly than a standard pencil and whilst it lasts a long time it maybe doesn't last quite as long. Having said that I feel it is completely worth the cost, it really does stay on, it's dead easy to use, it's great for creating a dramatic look and it's great for people like me who aren't that good at applying it really precisely!
Apparently, this is "L'Oreal's most advanced liner with super wear technology". The reason I never normally buy these retractable eyeliners is that they are misleadingly pointed when you buy them, but after the first couple of uses, they are rounded off and the surface area is too large to apply them accurately. This one, however, has a built-in sharpener which is hidden in the end of the liner. You simply pull it out and sharpen the liner as you would a regular eye pencil. This is all well and good in theory, but the reality is that because of what the product is made of, and the fact it is very soft compared to a pencil, you end up with black sharpenings stuck inside the TINY sharpener, which are very difficult to remove. Add to this the fact that the liner really needs sharpening every one or two uses to keep it pointed, and it really isn't worth the hassle in my opinion. Unfortunatey, I also seem to end up with black marks all over my hands whenever I use this product, and they don't come off that easily!
This leads me to my next point, which is that this is a waterproof liner. I have to confess that I didn't really believe this, given the soft nature of the product, but it is. It REALLY is. It is waterproof to the extent that you have to rub your eyes more than an acceptable amount in order to get it off. Even my waterproof make-up remover struggled a bit with this one, although perhaps an oil-based one would fare better. This may be a good choice if it's very important to you that your eyeliner stays on whilst swimming.
The other feature of this product is the built-in smudge tool. This resembles the eraser on the end of a writing pencil, but is softer and more rubbery. Personally, I didn't find that it worked all that well. I had to rub it quite a bit to get the smudged effect and then I just ended up looking as though I might have been crying. This addition may be more suited to the goths amongst us!
Overall, I really don't think this eyeliner is worth the money. The amount you need to sharpen it means it won't last long, and personally, I prefer the look of a standard eye pencil.
