L'Oréal Rouge Pulp Lip Colour
Advantages: Moulin Rouge - striking, even colour. easy to apply & wears well
Disadvantages: Extreme - odd colour, streaky; some may stain; general variation in quality between shades?
~~~~~~ L'Oreal Perfection Rouge Pulp ~~~~~~
I have two of these liquid lipcolours, shade 57 Moulin Rouge and shade 61 Extreme and though I don't use them all that often, I am glad to have them. Especially as I got them (a few years ago now) from my local Ethel Austin at the reduced price of just £1.50 each!
~~~ First Impressions ~~~
These come in a regular 5.5ml plastic tube with a screw on lid, to which the sponge applicator is attached. The tubes are coloured plastic, corresponding to the colour of the gloss. The tubes are quite a feminine shape I think, tapering in at the middle. They are also very plain and classy looking, having only gold accents and the product name on.
There is no 'use by' info on my tubes and as I said I did buy them some time ago. They are still fine though and I have no reason to think they are ready for the bin. If in doubt though, just chuck it out! What might be fine for me might not be for you, and as I don't wear make up daily these don't get exposed to the bacteria-laden air too much!
Moulin Rouge is a deep but vibrant berry red colour, and the outer tube matches this quite well; Extreme however, has a bright vivid purple outer tube but is in fact a browny-tinged with irridescent purple colour. Sounds strange, but it's hard to describe! The outer tube of this one does not match the actual colour very well at all.
They have a slight smell, which I can best describe as creamy-sweet. To me, it is a generic lipstick type of smell. I barely notice it on application and it doesn't stick around so nothing to offend I reckon. When you open the tube, you can see the lipcolour glistening and shimmering on the sponge, which bodes well since this claims to be a 'high shine' lip colour.
~~~ Using & results ~~~
My opinion actually differs between the 2 shades I own, so I'll take each in turn.
---- Applying it ----
Applying Moulin Rouge is a dream - it is thick and creamy and goes on evenly so one application leaves a nice, solid and non streaky colour. I can apply it to my whole mouth without having to refresh the applicator. Of course, you can have a thicker, more intense colour if you apply more, but I find one application leaves a brilliant shiny colour and you don't need more. Occasionally I will add a little extra in the middle of my lower lip, and doing so does not 'move' the colour already there around, resulting in streaks. It is completely non sticky and comfortable on my lips, straight from application and has no real taste to speak of. Major bonus!
Although Extreme is creamy n texture as well, I do find it to be a lot streakier and the colour less solid. When applying it I can clearly see the brush marks from the sponge, and the only way I can get rid of them is to apply a thicker layer. It's still non sticky and relatively comfortable, just not as much as Moulin Rouge. It also has more taste, and not a particularly pleasant one. For these reasons I would say Extreme is not as easy to apply or quite as nice to wear.
Neither of the shades has any real taste to complain or rave about.
---- Wearing it ----
Although both shades do transfer easily to glasses when drinking, the colour that stays on the lips is still strong, even and shiny. Since I have these in less than subtle colours, I do feel the need to reapply more often than the barely there colours I generally favour for my lips, as any fading is far more apparent. On a night out I would reapply this more often than every couple of hours. In fact, to keep it looking perfect I would usually dab a little more on each time I went to the loo (until of course I reached the point of inebriation where the state of my make up is of no consequence. Not that I do this any more, responsible adult that I am). I should say though that full application is not needed every time as this does have a tendency to stain, which is also noticeable when it comes time to remove it.
Overall, the colour does last pretty well, but you may find the stronger colours need more frequent reapplication to stay looking as striking and shiny. This doesn't put me up nor down though as I find all lip colour I have used to need reapplication, despite what they promise (though I don't pay silly money for makeup as I don't wear it daily, so maybe there are some out there that truly deliver!) This lip colour also lasts well in terms of quantity, as I rarely need more than one dip in the tube to do my lips.
---- Removing it ----
This wipes off easily enough with a facial wipe, but as mentioned, this does stain my lips a little, particularly around my lower lip line and in the creases where it leaves a slight colour behind. This is most apparent with Moulin Rouge. However, by the time I have my morning shower and do my usual skin care routine it is gone.
~~~ Recommend? ~~~
Yes and no. I would recommend Moulin Rouge without hesitation; it's a gorgeous, striking and even colour that applies easily and smoothly. I would not recommend Extreme, as despite it being a nice enough colour, it is not as good as Moulin Rouge and doesn't apply or wear quite as well. I would also say to have a look at the tester if possible, as the outer tube may not be particularly representative of what's inside. I am delighted with what I paid for mine, as even though I only love one of them, it was only £1.50!
3 stars for this since I think I have been lucky to pick up a good one and perhaps many more shades in the range are more akin to Extreme than Moulin Rouge; there seems to be a generally low rating on here and on Ciao, which indicates to me that I have been lucky. If both of my shades had performed equally well then my rating would be higher!
Summary: Lovely if you get the right shade?
