“ Brand: Lancome / Type: Mascara / Suitable for: Eye „
I don't often use waterproof mascara, but as I have a holiday to sunnier climes coming up, and the prospect of some swimming, this is the time of year when I invest in a good-quality waterproof mascara. And for me, it has to be from Lancome. As I use it infrequently, I don't mind spending a bit more in order to get the results I want and trust, after many years experience with this range.
The last 'holiday' mascara I used was from Lancome's Hypnose range. This year, however, I was looking to pay for my new purchase with an Amazon voucher, and this led me to Lancome's L'Extreme waterproof mascara as it was available to buy through Amazon, via the Cheap Smells website. It was reduced from the RRP of £20.00 to £15.95 plus £1.95 postage and packaging. I could have saved a couple of pounds by going directly to Cheap Smells, but that would have meant spending 'real' money. And at least going to Amazon via Nectar will have earned me a few points.
I placed my order last Monday afternoon, and my little parcel arrived safely on Thursday morning.
The mascara comes in a slender, silvery-grey box, with Lancome's brand name and familiar rose image at the top. The description of the mascara, 'L'Extreme Waterproof lengthening mascara, instant lash extension', with the colour ID number 01 (Noir Stretch) is at the base of the box. (It is also available in Brun Stretch.) There is a note on the back which says that the mascara has been Opthalmologically tested, and is suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.
The mascara tube itself is rather beautiful, in Lancome's signature black, with a blue band around the handle, together with gold lettering and rose on the handle. It is more distinctive and curvaceous than I've seen from them before, and is a pleasure to handle. On unscrewing (and subsequently closing) the mascara, there is a satisfying little 'click' which proves that the tube has been opened or closed successfully.
When I withdrew the wand, which is quite straight and slender, I was surprised to find that the contents of the brush seemed quite dry. Having read Lancome's description of this mascara's lengthening prowess - it is supposed to lengthen your lashes by up to 60% - instantly! - I wasn't terribly impressed with the first coat I applied. It certainly darkened my lashes, but did not make them seem appreciably longer. However, I waited for that coat to dry, and then applied a second coat. Much better! Now I could really see the difference, and a subsequent third coat - I do love long black lashes - was even more impressive. My eyelashes were lengthened, curled and defined, giving me exactly the results I had been hoping for. And I certainly didn't need styling with lash inserts, nor did I need to be enhanced in post-production.
Lancome's website states that L'Extreme mascara 'gives lashes visible lengthening...Like real lashes at the tips of lashes, lengthen up to 60%! Waterproof - 12/24 hours hold', and is the result of 'the exclusive FiberStretch Complex'. The website has a clever little video that shows you exactly how to apply the mascara, working from 'the base towards the tips. Use a zig-zag motion for maximum thickness and separation and work from the inner corner of the eye towards the outside', using the same zig-zag movement on your lower lashes.
As an experiment, I left one eye with just one coat, and the other eye with three coats. I then put the mascara through its paces. First, I tried to remove it with my usual eye make-up remover - Boots No7 4 in 1 Quick Cleansing Wipes, which I have previously reviewed - and it did not budge. Absolutely no black showed on the wipe. Then I splashed my eyes with cold water. The mascara stayed where it was supposed to.
Later that night, and purely in the interests of scientific experiment, I sobbed my eyes out while watching an episode of 'Grey's Anatomy' - the one with all the singing. Afterwards, I went to bed with my mascara still completely intact. It is very unusual for me to go to bed without first removing all my make-up, but I was prepared to do it so that I could put this product through its paces. The next morning I awoke to find that none had rubbed off, either onto my pillowcase or onto my cheeks, and there had been no 'clumping'.
And so, dear reader, I turned to what I knew would do the trick. Lancome's Bi-Facil Lotion (I've also reviewed this) - which is what I have used for many years to remove waterproof mascara, and which I trust will always do a good job - swept it away smoothly and easily, leaving my lashes clear and clean, and the cotton wool pads gloriously black. You'll be pleased to know that my eyelashes were absolutely fine after all this experimentation and subsequent cleansing.
I think that if this mascara can withstand the tests I put it through, then it can certainly cope with some hot days and exposure to a swimming pool!
As I said earlier, I bought Lancome L'Extreme Waterproof Mascara (Noir Stretch), which comes in a 6.5ml tube, from Cheap Smells via Amazon, for a total of £17.90. Going directly to Cheap Smells, you can buy it for £15.95 with free UK delivery. Although I can't see it on Boots' website tonight, they have been selling it for £20.50, with department stores such as Debenhams and House of Fraser retailing at the same price. I've also found it available for £14.95 with free shipping from an online outlet called Click Fragrance, but I have no personal experience with this outlet and so am not in a position to give a recommendation. I've found it this evening on eBay for £14.99 plus £0.99 p+p, but this is not from a top-rated seller.
Having done my research tonight, I'm more than happy to have used my Amazon voucher for this treat, and I am certainly happy to give it the full five stars. Now, where's my suitcase?
(This review is also on Ciao, under the same user name.)
I was lucky enough to get a gorgeous black leather beauty case from my mother in law for Christmas. Inside it contained lots of lancome goodies, including two mascaras. One of them being the L'Extreme mascara in the shade of black. I was quite excited to try this as I don't often get the chance to treat myself to the luxury beauty brands, so I was dying to see what Lancome had to offer in the way of mascara.
The packaging is very classy. I have always thought of Lancome as a middle class mature brand. It is black and plain, with elegant gold coloured detailed writing. The mascara is packaged in a curve type shape which fits nicey in the palm of your hand and makes it easy to unscrew the lid from.
The brush for the mascara is a standard bristle brush, long and thin with thin short bristles on. I found that when I first started using the mascara quite a lot came out onto the brush to a would give it a wipe on the end of the tube, and that way the spare mascara went back in and didn't get wasted, but it did mean that I didn't end up too clumpy!!
The brush made it easy to apply the mascara, although I did get a tiiny bit on my upper eyelids but I just used a damp cotton bud to correct this. The mascara coats on evenly and does make your lashes look longer, but in my opinion it didn't make them appear as thick as other mascaras, which I prefer.
The mascara had good staying power, and lasted well until I took it off manually in the evening.
Overall this is a good mascara, but at around £20 a tube, when the better, max factor false lash effect is only half that price I wouldn't buy this again.
I was lucky enough to be given this as a gift by my sister in law who went to a "look good feel better" session during her radiotherapy where cancer sufferers are given huge bags of free cosmetics from the top companies.
Lancome L'extreme mascara was one of the products given to the charity by Lancome - So top marks to Lancome for being generous with their products before I get into the detail of the products!
Stockists / price
lets get the worst bit over with first - Lancome can be found on the internet at www.lancome.com, or in department stores or try www.cheapsmells.com / www.strawberrynet.com for bargains.
The RRP is £20 (sharp intake of breath I know super expensive for mascara!) It is currently on cheapsmells.com for £12.95 which is better but still expensive.
All lancome products are tested and supposed to by hyperallergenic- I have sensitive skin and have no problem with this product.
What does it promise to do?
It promises to extend your eyelashes by up to 60% while conditioning - being easy to apply without clumping, and last all day!
What does it do?
Well it has a traditional straight applicator so is easy to put on - it is a long lasting mascara - one application in the morning generally lasts all day. It is also easy to add a second coat for a more dramatic effect in the evening.
Does it condition? Seems to - but no more than any other mascara.
Does is apply without clumping? Well you have to be a little careful and wipe the mascara wand from time to time but it does normally go on without clumping.
Does it lengthen by 60%- NO I am afraid not - it really doesnt seem to either thicken or lengthen my eyelashes particularly. I need to put on at least 3 coats to get thick eye lashes and they definitely don't look 60% longer - not even 10% longer if I am honest so would be going after Lancome under the trade descriptions act here.
This is another bug bear of mine - although the mascara is waterproof to some extent which is good at the moment in the rain it does smear very badly if you cry - and being extremely pregnant and hormonal I seem to be crying quite a lot.
The other problem is that it is actually really hard to remove the mascara at the end of the day. I find myself using a lot of make up remover to take it off and STILL end up with panda eyes in the morning!
A reasonable product and as a freebit cant complain but I would never pay £12.95 for this let alone the RRP of £19.50
I absolutely love Lancome mascaras and this one is one of my favourites.
I buy mine from feelunique.com for just under £14 which I think is a great price for a high quality mascara. The one I have is black. You can also get it from limited places in grey, but unfortunatelty not in my favourite colour which is brown. This is it's only flaw.
The mascara itself comes in quite a distinctive and elegant curved bottle. It is very quick and easy to apply and I find one coat is enough. The wand is perfect for separating and getting right to the base and end of the lashes.
I find this mascara gives my lashes a great, natural, pretty daytime look. My lashes definitely look longer and it doesn't clump at all or stick your lashes together. Although it does add some volume this mascara doesn't give a dramatic effect, I would recommend trying the hypnose mascara for that.
As I have found with all Lancome mascaras they stay on all day long and only smudge and give you that 'Panda eye' look if you rub your eyes. I've taken naps while wearing this mascara and still haven't found that any of it comes off. Saying that it is very easy to remove with ordinary soap and water. I've had mine for months and it still hasn't started to dry up.
I recommend this mascara to anyone after a natural, daytime look that will last all day without smudging.
Brilliant product! This mascara certainly does what it stays on the tin - longer lashes instantly. The colour is in depth, it takes quickly and dries rapidly so an extra coat is easy to apply. It is long lasting, does not break up and clump or 'shed' so does not create black bits on the cheeks or below the eye. It lasts and I have worn it all day and all night clubbing, slept in it and it has looked as fresh as any cheaper brand newly applied. One application will last and not need refreshing or touching up - the true sign of a quality cosmetic and that feature will save money in the long run as in short, it lasts longer than cheaper alternatives. The packaging is the subtle under stated signature of Lancome, with an ergonomically designed applicator handle making getting this in position easy with right or left hand. A dressing table essential.
In my current quest to find the best make up products I can stick to for the next few years, I have discovered the perfect mascara in this Lancome product.
It's a lash-lengthening mascara and many of those - even premium brands - tend to make a mess of the lashes. The little bits of fibre that are responsible for the lengthening stick at various angles, make the colouring part of mascara go blobby and curdle... and so on.
Now, L'extreme is nothing of the sort: it's essentially a great mascara, which doesn't make lashes stick together, doesn't go clumpy/blobby, and whose lenghtening fibres go where they should be (i.e. at the end of my lashes) to make them look longer and slightly curlier.
The lenghtening is not actually, despite the name, an extreme evening/clubbing/stage effect: it's perfectly suitable for normal wear (though I wear glasses which means my eye make up is less prominent).
In my expereince many lenghtening mascaras were often more irritating to the eyes, but this one doesn't irritate. The bits stay where they should be and although it's not waterproof, it ceratinly doesn't go all over my face with a slightest touch.
The brush is good sized and works very well at keeping the lashes separate and allowing light touching up of the top surface of top lashes and the whole of the bottom ones.
L'extreme costs around £15-£20.
Very highly recommended.
I was given this mascara as part of a gift set at Christmas so I'm not sure how much it costs but I have seen it advertised at around £15. This is a price I would probably pay myself to buy another of these products.
It is a very good quality mascara with a medium sized brush that makes it very easy to apply.
The first time i tried it, I felt my lashes were long and glossy yet quite natural looking and the more I used it, the more versatile I felt it was.
You can apply just one coat for a natural look that still lengthens. Or with a second and third coat you can achieve a more dramatic flash lash effect, more suitable for evening.
Like most mascaras, it did dry up after about three months and was a little clumpy on application. Despite this, I would recommend this mascara to others looking for a versatile product.
****Lancome L'Extreme Mascara****
Like many girls i can honestly say that over the years i have tried heaps of different mascaras some have worked well and done what they have claimed to do,others not so much. Whilst i was buying perfume last week i remembered i needed a new mascara and this was the one the assistant picked out for me based on what i wanted (plain black ,something that lengthens)
Lancome tend to sell high quality goods whether it is make up or perfume so i was quite happy that my mascara would be quite good.
This was pretty standard for a mascara apart from the fact the lid has a weird shape to it. To be honest i don't really see the point of this as its not like it effects the mascara in any way. The black and gold colours go well together - the product looks quite expensive and like it is high quality.
Brush-Again this is pretty normal to other brands i have tried such as boots no7.
This claims to give you up to 60% longer lashes. I don't think it gives that much but my lashes do look quite a bit longer.
Long lasting-I was extremely happy with this, kept my lashes looking nice all day long.
I found this extremely easy to apply and it left no clumps. I swear this separated and defined every single lash!!
At £20 this is the most expensive mascara i have ever owned, it is also the nicest one i have ever tried so i suppose you get what you pay for( if anyone can recommend a good cheaper mascara i would be grateful) This comes in brown and black.
Overall i am really happy with the product the only bad thing being the high price.
For longer looking lashes /
