La Base Pro - the pro of primers!

When it comes to my skin, I have to be so careful as I have really sensitive skin, and I've suffered from quite bad eczema since childhood. My pores are huge too, which can make finding make-up to suit my skin very difficult. I came across this product around 2 months ago and it is excellent in every single way (although a little on the expensive side). Anyway, here it is!:

My local beautician used to treat my skin quite often, and she suggested using a primer before applying make-up in order to stop the foundation sinking through into my pores and clogging them up. The brand at her shop was smashbox, so naturally she sold me the "photo finish" primer however that cost upwards of £37, which is extortionate considering it is a tiny little bottle. I did however find that using a primer improved my skin, and resulted in my make up going on smoother and lasting longer. I shopped around a bit and when I came across this little gem of a product I was smitten!
For a start, it's cheaper than smashbox, so that's a massive thumbs up, although it is still a little pricey. It does perform brilliantly though, and it lasts ages, so it is worth every single penny. The packaging is super sleek and very elegant; it comes in a tall glass bottle with a black pump action dispenser and a clear lid. The glass has a semi-frosted effect which adds to the overall pleasant appearance.

The primer itself is quite thick, almost like a serum, but it is silky smooth and has a very light fragrance. One pump dispenses around a pea size amount, which I have found is more than enough for my face. I usually use an exfoliator before applying the primer, just so that all the dead skin is removed. La Base Pro is easy to apply, it just glides onto the skin and leaves your face feeling silky smooth and soft. It makes applying foundation ten times easier, and I've found that my foundation gives a more even coverage when I use this primer, and it doesn't stick to my pores either. I have found in the past that foundation tends to stick to some places on my face better than others, such as my forehead, whereas on my nose and chin it doesn't seem to last long at all. With La Base Pro this doesn't happen, my make-up lasts longer all round and I've also found that on an evening my make-up is easier to remove and doesn't leave any residue.
Since using this primer I've noticed an improvement in the condition of my skin, and I really think it is because this product prevents my pores being blocked on a daily basis by foundation. I am so impressed with this primer, and I really do think it's a product I will continue to use for a long long time, and because it has been so good, I've started to use a Lancome foundation as well.

I would recommend this product to anyone who also suffers with large pores, and to anyone who just wants a smoother make-up application and longer-lasting coverage. I'm sure there are cheaper products, but you could also end up paying a lot more for a similar product, and I think this one finds the perfect balance between a quality product and a reasonable price.
Definitely a must have for anyone's make-up bag!

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

I have found cheaper primers which do a better job.

I received the Lancome La Base pro as a gift from my father for Christmas 2011. I have in the last year or so become really into using face primers - especially when going somewhere nice. I find it creates an even base upon which you can apply your makeup and it helps maintain and even and flawless look throughout the duration of the day and/or night.

This product is a 25ml pump bottle. The box is a silver colour which looks very expensive and stylish - making it a very exciting gift to receive! The bottle is very elegant - roughly 10cm high and quite a narrow cylindrical shape. It is a really great size to hold and handy for when you are doing your makeup in a rush. The bottle itself is a frosted class with a black plastic rim and transparent black plastic lid with silver lancome rose on top. The overall effect of the bottle is very expensive looking - which automatically makes me assume the product will be good. the pump is a grey metal and works exactly as it should, it releases the base gently and in just the right size (I probably use 2/3 pumps each time I use it - but it is nice to have the option of less).

I really liked the consistency of the base - it is a smooth, clear coloured gel which feels silky and soft. It has a very faint smell which is fairly pleasant if a little synthetic. Saying that, when it is being applied under makeup it doesn't really matter because the smell is usually covered up by the smell of other products anyway. It applies very easily to your face, goes on smoothly and has a nice texture. It rubs in easily and does give the appearance of instantly smoother and even skin tone. The only issue I have found with the base is that it does leave my skin feeling a little dry. To combat this I have tried applying it with a moisturiser underneath (but given time to absorb) - this does, however, effect the absorbency of the base. It combines with the moisturiser to create little flakes of gel which comes off your skin and fails to achieve the even skin tone. I wouldn't use it with moisturiser - however, that does leave your skin feeling a little dry unfortunately. It is easy to apply makeup over the top of the product and I often use it in combination with other face primers to achieve a better look.

The price is pretty steep for what it is - £26.00 from boots for 25ml, potentially cheaper if you buy duty free or from amazon/ebay etc. although only marginally. I have been using it for 3 months now and I would say that I have approximately a quarter of the bottle left. Although the bottle is glass because it is frosted it is difficult to see how much of the product is left - another downside. I would also say that when it comes to getting every last bit out I can imagine this will be difficult - the pump is not able to get everywhere - a bit annoying for such an expensive product. The top of the bottle does unscrew, but this still leaves you with the problem of being able to get the entire contents out.

Overall, I have found better primers which are cheaper. I find this a bit disappointing for lancome as I expected it to be really good. I would not buy it again and in future when requesting gifts I would ask for some of the cheaper primers that I have used which I have found to be better (watch this space for future reviews on better face primers).

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Often forgotten, every make up bag should have this!

I went to the lancome counter for the first time a few years back, I always used to moisturise but never thought about a primer prior to applying my foundation!
I would really recommend this. It really gives a long lasting, durable finishto your foundation. I did worry when I first used it that it was clogging my pores however I think it actually helped to improve them.
Another worry with these products is the oily appearance, if you over applicate this you can get a 'greasy' loom, however it is brilliant in small doses. Even if you decide to have a make up free day applying this on it's own improves the look of your complexion. It smooths out the apperance of any fine lines, and I even feel that it helps to improve the appearance of scarring, I have a large sar from a motorbike accident and I think it even smooths the apperance of that as well!
A brilliant product an it is worth the spend! I love lancome products and really feel this is one of the best items I have discovered for my make up bag.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Definitely does what it says, and 100% worth the money.

I absolutely love this stuff! My skin is really dry/dehydrated, but oily in some patches, so problems I had been having with foundation were that my skin was so dry the foundation would make my skin look flaky (even with a ton of moisturiser). It would emphasize my big pores and I felt like it was blocking them more.

With this base my skin looks amazing. It's so lightweight on my skin and just sits on the surface, I would say it does feel a bit greasy but not heavy, and it means you almost have an invisble mask covering your pores/imperfections. Your foundation glides on, and stays on. It lasts longer as it has better coverage.

I would not go without this product now that I've used it and I find it lasts quite a long time for the money :)

Downsides: There are only 2 problems I have found with this product. The first being the glass bottle. You have to be very careful using this, especially when taking it out with you. But also sitting it on the sink isn't a great idea lol! The second problem is that when you get to bottom of the bottle it can be quite difficult getting the last of it out, although it is possible using a straw or something.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A make-up primer to reduce oil and the looks of pores and fine lines

      ------------------------------------
What Made Me Try this product?
      ------------------------------------

I have tried a number of primers and I was incredibly impressed with this one by Lancome. I am not really a huge Lancome fan but a friend of mine told me to try it one night we were getting ready together for a night out. She told me that she swopped using her pressed powder on top of her foundation for a primer underneath her foundation. I did not see how this was going to work for my excessively oily skin but it did!

      ----------------------------
      How Does La Base Work?
      ----------------------------

La Base is a see through oil-free face perfecting primer. It can be used by itself after applying moisturising in the day or underneath foundation. It gives a beautifully smooth finish to the skin which by itself just gives a perfected look to the skin or if worn with foundation causes the foundation to adhere to the La Base causing it to glide on effortlessly. It is absorbed straight away. It prevents my foundation from looking patchy or unnatural. It has a technology called Elasto-Smooth which enables an immediate silky smooth effect which is non-greasy. It helps smooth out all sorts of imperfections such as fine lines, pores and signs of tiredness. It works very similarly to the Instant Perfector by Clinique and Clarins. However, I find that the Lancome one is more lightweight and blends more easily. I find that the Clarins one because it is thicker can cause makeup to not blend properly. La Base has light reflective pigments which further helps imperfections to look minimised. However, this does mean that in photographs your face can look a little white due to the light reflective pigments with the flash of the camera (which is not a good look!)

      ---------------------
      La Base Packaging
      ---------------------

La Base comes in a silver box and the actual product in a see through glass narrow pump bottle. The pump is black. The bottle looks very elegant on my dressing table. However, because it is glass it is not great for travelling. When I last went away for a weekend, I filled up an empty pot I had with it to prevent any breakages.

      ---------------
      My Thoughts?
      ---------------

I love it and what my friend said about no longer requiring a mattifying powder over the top of my foundation is true. It also allows my skin to breathe more easily without caking myself in powder all day long with additional touch ups. It additionally allows my skin to look dewy and radiant without looking oily which is a look I have been wishing for! Since wearing it I have actually been asked by several people what foundation I wear because it looks so natural. So it has to be La Base working its magic!!

      ------------------------------
      Any problems with La Base
      ------------------------------

Yes there is one problem and this is the same problem that I had with the Mac primer. If you lightly drop the bottle (for example, onto carpet so it does not break) the product inside goes a little bit strange. It is hard to explain but the product almost separates. Luckily this particular bottle has not fully separated only the top layer of it and it has not seemed to have made a difference to its application or finish. However, my Mac one separated completely and came out of the tube all bitty and horrible so it could no longer be used. I am just praying I do not lightly drop this product again or else I think it will go like the Mac product and that would be a huge waste of money. The reason I am comparing it to the Mac primer in this instance is because they are both see through primers with similar textures however, the Mac one I found completely useless as a product anyway.

      --------------------------
      Price and Where to Buy
      --------------------------

This product can be bought from the Lancome website or from department stores such as, House of Fraser, Debenhams or John Lewis where Lancome is stocked. Additionally some independent stores and Boots stores sell Lancome products. La Base is a 25ml and is £26.00. This is by far the most expensive primer I have ever bought so I am so pleased that it has done what it says it does!! Plus the 25ml seems to be lasting quite well!

      --------
      Overall
      --------

A must-have for anybody with oily skin or for somebody who finds their makeup does not last throughout the day or for somebody who would like to disguise pores and fine lines.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        An absolute must-have product

My sister recently made the Lancome sales persons day by buying over £150 worth of make-up for her wedding day. Having been given the job of make-up artist for the day, I was dubious about a product that promises to do so much - shrink pores, even skin tone, reduce oiliness and help foundation stay put all day. However, I am converted!

The application could not be easier. Simply squeeze the tiniest drop onto the back of your hand and smooth over your face. The results are immediate. The skin feels unbelievably soft and smooth, and the skin tone does indeed appear more even. The product is slightly fragranced, but the aroma is pleasant and subtle - not at all overpowering.

The smooth base it provides makes applying foundation over the top easy, and it does help foundation stay on all day. Long lasting foundation for an event like this would normally require a heavy layer of powder, which usually cakes and cracks after a few hours. However, due to the mattifying effect, hardly any powder was needed.

We took a bag full of cosmetics to the wedding, anticipating that I would need to touch my sister's make-up up throughout the day. However, it stayed perfect all day. Highly recommended

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A truly great product that really works - I just wish it cost a little less.

Now I'm in my mid-thirties I am finding the make up routine I used when I was younger no longer gives the same results. I have combination skin, and consequently I have larger pores on my nose and chin, which foundation can sink into and accentuate. I have tried many different foundations, from shockingly expensive to budget brands, and as all of them do this, some quicker than others, I concluded that the problem is my skin rather than the foundation. I also have a few small scars from spots when I was younger, and I'm definitely starting to get 'smile' lines around my eyes, so my skin is quite challenging. I am enough of a realist to acknowledge I'm never going to have perfect, flawless looking skin again, but I can't help longing for the smooth, glowing skin of my younger years! I had previously tried a couple of make up primers, but had been disappointed with the results, one made my skin break out in small spots under my skin, the other made no noticeable difference, but on the recommendation of a good friend I decided to give Lancome La Base a try.

Lancome is part of the cosmetics giant L'Oreal. They started over 60 years ago, initially creating perfume, but have since diversified into skincare and cosmetic products. As one of L'Oreals companies, Lancome has a dubious history when it comes to animal testing. In 1989 Lancome, along with several others of L'Oreals subsidiary companies, stopped testing their products on animals, however, they are still using substances in their products that have been tested on animals, although they state in their press releases that they plan to stop this in 2013.

Lancome La Base comes in a silver cardboard box with all the information I would expect to find printed on it. The primer is contained in a small opaque glass bottle, with a transparent, smoky grey coloured plastic lid which pulls off to reveal a black and silver plastic pump dispenser. This bottle contains 25ml of primer. The cheapest price I have been able to find for this primer is £25.00 from Boots. Although I have never found this primer reduced, Lancome frequently has special offers of a free make up or skincare set when two or more of their products are purchased. Although at £25.00 this is certainly not a budget buy, I find that a little goes a long way with this primer, and using it once or twice a week a bottle last me almost six months (it has become a regular on my Christmas and birthday lists!). The pump dispenser is ideal, because the product doesn't come into contact with my skin as it would in a pot or tube I don't need to worry about contamination so it doesn't worry me that I have the same bottle on the go for nearly six months. I find that the amount dispensed through the pump is easily controllable, and I usually use one and a half pumps each time. The pump dispenser can be screwed off the top of the bottle, which I do when I am running low, to enable me to get every last drop out of the bottle.

When dispensed the primer feels like a really smooth, silky, silicone gel. It reminds me of the anti-chaffing gels I used to use for running long distances. It is not at all greasy, odourless, and dries rapidly, leaving a totally transparent, matte, super-soft, even layer on the skin. I put a small amount on my nose, chin and forehead, which I gently smooth outwards and downwards across my face and neck, with my fingertips. Within a minute it has dried completely, and is undetectable. This is where the magic comes in; as I apply foundation over the primer I can feel it gliding smoothly over the even base and rather than sinking into and accentuating my large pores, it creates a uniform base, creating the illusion of almost-flawless textured skin. As well as delivering deceptively smooth looking skin the primer has light-diffusing properties which, when used with a sheer foundation, makes my lines less apparent, and gives a hint of a healthy, dewy, glow. I feel that I look as though I've had a few really good nights sleep, or just been on holiday, when I use this primer. Because it blurs the lines around my eyes and evens out my skin I don't need a heavy foundation, and I look significantly brighter, fresher, and healthier. I look at it like painting a wall; no matter how good the paint is, the wall won't look good if the plaster underneath is cracked and lumpy!

The primer also helps make up last longer. I find eye shadow doesn't crease, and foundation doesn't need reapplying or touching up, even after a long night out. The matte base provided by the primer prevents my oily T-zone from causing my make up to disappear, something I used to experience frequently in hot or humid conditions. Lancome states that this primer is non-comedogenic, so it won't clog pores and aggravate problem skin.

I can't feel this primer on my skin once I've applied it, but I definitely notice I'm wearing it when I look in the mirror. It's pleasant to use, and easy to remove along with the rest of my make up using my normal make up remover. Despite my initial reservations about primers, it hasn't caused any of the problems I experienced with the primers I had tried previously, and I am absolutely convinced it makes a real difference. It can't give me back the skin I had in my early teens, but it does make the skin I have now look infinitely better, and for me that's worth the price. I don't use it every day, as I'm happy with tinted moisturiser for work, and I don't really do heavy make up, but for special occasions and nights out I wouldn't be without it.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Primed and ready for action. A worthy purchase, fully recommended.

I was sick and tired of spending time applying my makeup, only for it to slide all over and sometimes even off my face hours into the day/evening. Not only was this frustrating and a waste of my time, but it was also a waste of perfectly decent makeup.

I had seen this primer on the boots website and it looked like it could be just the product that I needed. It said it was inspired by makeup artistry techniques and promises to reveal the secret to a professional-finish complexion. It also said that it was a translucent makeup base with an ultra soft finish that smooth's the skins surface and boosts makeup results. I also noted that it had received a 5 out of 5 star rating on its one and only review; I decided that it was worth a punt as I trust Lancôme as a brand.

When it arrived I was so excited with this purchase that I just had to put it to the test straight away. I decided that it would be best if I cleansed my skin, toned and moisturised it so that the product would have a good base to start with. I've since read on the leaflet that comes with the product that it is to be applied to cleaned and moisturised skin anyway, so it was good that I had already done so.

This product box says that it resurfaces and preps the skin using their innovative 'Elasto-smooth' technology that visibly resurfaces the skin. This means that all imperfections such as visible pores, fine lines and signs of tiredness appear instantly smoothed away and skin feels silky soft.

I can honestly vouch that this actually was the case for me; I wasn't expecting to see such a difference without even having put any make up on at this point. It wasn't so much a miracle transformation into model perfect skin but I could definitely see that my skin looked smoother and more refreshed than it did before I put the primer on.

The product also states that it 'boosts makeup results and improves its hold and that the oil free texture helps to control shine and glides on seamlessly'. It then states to 'apply your best suited Lancome face makeup product for a more evened complexion and enhanced blendability'.

Personally I was a bit worried when I first felt the texture of the serum as it was so silky on my fingers that I thought that it could make my skin too oily, even though it contained no oil within it. I was so very wrong, thankfully. The serum glided on and my skin felt amazing, velvety smooth and not at all greasy in any way.

The instructions say to deposit the serum onto your fingertips and then to blend towards the outer contour of your face, which I dutifully did. It then says to blend your foundation or powder with a brush or your fingertips and then repeat the action down the nose, along the cheekbones and around the chin. I found it just as easy to apply it all over my face before putting on any foundation or powder and don't think it made a difference in how the product worked on me personally.

The end result was brilliant: Easy to apply foundation, even skin and tone, and smooth fresh looking makeup finish that looked natural but in the best possible way. I was able to add glow in the form of a Bobbi Brown shimmer brick, whilst feeling comfortable that my skin wouldn't go shiny all over on top of the shimmer (which would be overload) and this is something I'm never usually confident in my skin enough to do.

My fiancé who doesn't usually bother looking too close into my makeup said that my makeup looked really classy and smooth - now if that isn't a (possibly backhanded) compliment then I don't know what is, haha!

I also applied it around the eye area and on the lids and this really helped in keeping my eye makeup where I had put it, and without creases. I honestly feel that my makeup has never looked this good, or lasted as long as it does when I use this product.

I must also mention that I have tried this primer with a variety of foundations ranging from your everyday No.7, 17 and Rimmel foundations; to more expensive ones including Benefit and Bobbi Brown. I have even used it with cheap mineral make up (Rimmel and L'oreal) and my Laura Mercier mineral powder. Each time I have had a great result, and a long lasting one for that matter too.

When I went to V Festival this was my obvious choice to take in my attempt to travel light and it worked a treat. My make up stayed put all day, I didn't have to carry any spare in my bag, nor go back to the tent on numerous occasions to reapply. Even on the last evening of V when it rained, my make up stayed where I wanted it to be; this is something I have never experienced when not using this product, not ever!

When it comes to taking makeup off after using this product, you'd expect there may be a bit of a struggle but actually I was really surprised to find that it came off easily using my normal cleanser. I am always a bit reluctant to take the makeup off when I've used this if truth be told, as it usually still looks like I've just put it on.

I feel like my skin has benefitted immensely from using this product as my sister made a comment that my skin looked better than usual, even when I was wearing no makeup and no primer. I am wondering if this is because the primer stops the direct contact that my makeup has with my skin or whether it has some long term skin benefits to add to the list. Either way, I am not complaining.

I'm trying to think of any real downside of this product that needs to be mentioned (apart from it making me not want to remove my makeup as mentioned above) but I am finding it very difficult to do so; the only niggle I guess would possibly the initial price outlay of £25 for 25ml of product, but to be honest I think it's quite a fair price for a product that does what it says it will do. You must also remember that you don't have to use half a bottle of this to get the desired result as this serum goes a long way. In all fairness I would probably be happy paying for one of these every month if I had to, but this isn't necessary as I do believe this bottle will last much longer than that.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Doesn't come cheap but a good quality and effective product.

Some time ago, I went to the Lancome counter in a local department store for wedding make up ideas. I remember asking the make-up artist if Lancome produced a make-up primer. She replied that the company did not. Their theory was that if a foundation does its job properly, then a primer is unnecessary. I wasn't convinced. I knew that other companies made such a product - I could even think of one in particular whose line in primers was reputed to be near flying off the shelves. I looked at the Lancome rep. The voice, the facial expression and the body language suggested that she was not wholly convinced either. About a year later I made an appointment at the Lancome counter to try out some new shades and ideas. On this occasion the male rep/make-up artist asked if I had heard of a fabulous new line the company had brought out - a make-up primer - and would I like to try it? I opened my mouth to repeat the comment that such an invention ought not to be necessary but thought better of it. It would have sounded churlish and after all, I could have done myself out of finding out about a new product which may turn out to be useful. I nodded in compliance.

When he had finished the results were stunning. I could barely recognise myself from the fraught, tired shopper who had gratefully slumped into the chair. I appeared glowing with health. Many hours later that evening when it came to "cleansing time" I felt almost sad to take the make-up off - it was almost untouched - still natural and glowing. I have to say that whenever I have a professional artist apply make-up for me it always lasts considerably longer than do my own attempts at facial artwork. It would be difficult to say whether the primer had contributed to the longevity of the make-up or not. In the days and weeks to come I tried using the primer myself along with a variety of foundations and I came to understand that this make-up base really does help the finished make-up last a good deal longer.

La Base Pro Perfecting Make Up Primer comes in the familiar silver Lancome box. Inside, you will find a small, cylindrical bottle which contains 25 ml of the primer. The colourless, "frosted" glass container with the neat black lettering, black cap and small silver rose logo give an impression of professional quality and understated style. Does the content live up to this suggestion? Oh yes. Squeeze the dispenser gently and deposit a small amount onto the back of your hand to try the texture and consistency. La Base is a clear, colourless soft gel with barely any scent which spreads easily over the skin and absorbs immediately to leave an extremely satiny, soft, smooth feeling and an even, non-greasy appearance. It is extremely easy to apply foundation over this base either using your fingers, or for a really professional finish, a brush. The manufacturers claim that this primer will reduce the appearance of "enlarged pores, fine lines, signs of tiredness". It's a big promise but it really does deliver. It provides a smoothed complexion upon which to apply foundation. I was quite pleased and surprised to find that this product enhances the effect of every good quality foundation I tried. I have tried the base with two of Lancome's foundations along with one from Elizabeth Arden and another by Dior. The effect is to give a flawless finish which is glowing, dewy, satiny, fresh and the promise of extending the wear of the make-up is no mere bluster either. It really does help make-up to wear evenly for longer. I had discovered a superb addition to my make-up kit.

Not satisfied with the fairly extensive testing I had given the product, I decide to take things a step further. So it can make a top-of-the-range foundation perform even better. But what can it do for a budget-priced make-up? Out came my "Lacura" foundation. That would be the excellent value product from Aldi. I like this budget priced make up a great deal though I would usually use it for every-day wear rather than a special evening out. I tried the combination. With the La Base primer, the budget-priced make-up appeared smoother, had added radiance and lasted longer. So, it can enhance the performance of even the cheapest foundation. At times I have even worn the primer alone - when I don't really want a full make-up but still want the even, smooth appearance it provides.

I have tried very hard to be truly objective and look for some negative feature of this product. The price, I suppose, could be viewed as a negative. (La Base is currently available for £27 at Amazon or £25 at Boots online.) However, after the initial outlay I would feel as though I had an extremely versatile and practical item in my collection. I can give no useful comment about the ingredients of the product. Very little information appears on the presentation box. Does this mean there are very few ingredients or does it mean that the list is not complete? I don't know the answer to that so anyone who needs more information would have to contact the company.

On balance, then, I can find hardly anything negative to say about this excellent make-up base and I would not hesitate to recommend this luxurious but very practical and effective product.
