Advantages: Covers dark circles and brightens undereyes, little goes a long way, long lasting and doesn't crease
In the last couple of years I have started to develop some dark circles under my eyes. Even when I make sure to drink plenty of water and get enough sleep they are still there, so all I can do is try to cover them. I have tried quite a few different concealers with varying levels of success.
I first tried Laura Mercier's Secret Concealer in Sephora in America where I asked an assistant to test out a few different products on me in an attempt to find one with a good consistency and lasting power which was a good match for my skin tone. I was not sure if this was really as good as the assistant seemed to think, because he had just taken my makeup off with a wipe and tried the concealer without primer or other makeup, so I found it hard to imagine what it would really look like. As the assistant seemed sure it was the best match for me, I decided to give it a chance. I bought the Secret Concealer in shade 2 as part of the Undercover Pot, which includes 0.8g of Secret Concealer for under eye circles (compared to 2.2g if you buy the solo pot of Secret Concealer). In the other half it has 1.0g of Secret Camoflague for blemishes and underneath there is 4.9g of loose setting powder.
I use the Secret Concealer on top of my foundation. On the undereye area I first use a primer, followed by a light application of colour corrector to cancel out the dark circles (usually Benefit Erase Paste), foundation or tinted moisturiser and then finally I apply a small amount of the Secret Concealer. I only need a little bit as it is very creamy making it easy to blend to achieve good coverage, and it is quite highly pigmented so it instantly brightens the area. It is a good colour match for my fairly pale skin. I apply the Secret Concealer using the Laura Mercier Secret Camoflague brush. This is a thin, tapered brush so the small end of it enables accurate, precise application in small areas and does not waste product. I really recommend using this brush or a similar shaped concealer brush with the Secret Concealer. If you apply with fingers you will waste a lot of product and it won't look as neat. I then blend it out with an airbrush concealer brush from Sephora, and roll a little bit of the Laura Mercier loose powder over the under eye area using the Laura Mercier Camoflage Powder brush. This keeps the concealer in place all day and stops it from wearing off, a problem which I had with previous concealers. I have often had a problem with concealers creasing or settling into a fine line under my eye, but I have not experienced this with Laura Mercier. I think this is because such a small quantity is required, so it doesn't build up and start sliding around.
Price and Value:
This is quite an expensive product but personally I feel it makes a big improvement to my appearance, helping me to look awake and brighter every day, so for me it is worth every penny. The 2.2g Secret Concealer pot costs around £18 and can be bought from Space NK or John Lewis. I haven't seen Laura Mercier products anywhere else in the UK but they will also be obtainable online, possibly cheaper. Since such a little goes a long way with this, I estimate that a full size pot could last up to a year. I will definitely repurchase when mine is finished.
Summary: I am so glad I found this!
