I have been looking over the last few months to gradually replace items in my make up bag with natural alternatives. This has been no easy task, especially in certain areas such as foundation make-up, because unless you can obtain a sample you are committed to purchasing an entire bottle, which is a large outlay for an uncertain outcome.
In addition to this some of these natural products need a second mortgage to afford them as they have hefty price tags, and to be honest for most of us they are just not a possibility, however ethical we want to be.
Nevertheless I am on a mission with this as ethical companies really appeal to me, and their natural paraben free alternatives are showing outstanding results in many areas. Their main difficulty lies in the fact that many are simply not widely known, or indeed marketed in the same place as mainstream products, so they do not benefit from the sales that could be made when potential shoppers for make-up browse for ideas and inspiration.
It is, however, much easier now with the internet to seek out these products, and some larger independent heath food stores stock them. Even some larger towns and cities now have specialist shops where these products can be purchased.
The item I am reviewing today was not as much of a gamble as some of the other products I have purchased, as the company that manufactures this is very dear to my heart. Lavera is a company which has been manufacturing natural beauty products for twenty years. Started by a gentleman called Thomas Haase in Germany, Lavera has over the last two decades established itself as a leader in this field of natural cosmetics and toiletries.
Thomas himself had a rare skin condition which did not respond to conventional medications and creams, and so he set about making natural products using plants. Ten years of research followed, and then the birth of his company "Lavera", which in Latin means "truth".
Everything they make is free from preservatives, synthetic perfumes, and colours and is vegan, testament to the fact that nothing is tested on animals.
Over the years I have purchased many products from them including their highly successful range of sun creams and shampoos.
I purchased the mascara they make from a favourite on-line website I use called So Organic. Part of the Trend Sensitive make-up collection, this product is known as Volume Mascara. Available in three shades- black, brown and blue, the mascara retails for £10.90 direct from Lavera themselves at www.lavera.co.uk, or from So Organic at www.soorganic.co.uk. If you choose the latter you can benefit from clicking through from an on-line site such as Topcashback at www.topcashback.co.uk where you can obtain 8% cash back. The mascara is also available from Veganstore at www.veganstore.co.uk as well as many other on-line retailers specialising in natural cosmetics.
I chose the brown version as this is the colour I normally wear, and was pleased when it arrived as the box was attractive in silver, as was the case which looked stylish. I really depend on mascara as I have days when I do a very natural and quick make-up, which doesn't involve eye shadow, so I do like my eye lashes to have volume and definition. I have been using Maybelline mascaras and have been more than happy with various ones from the range, so I knew this product would have to compete with my positive experience with this company.
The most attractive aspect of this product, even before I used it, had to be the fragrance. I wasn't expecting this, but the product has a rose scent to it. On a closer look at the ingredients I found the reason-it contains rose water. For those with any allergies I feel it may be helpful to list the ingredients, so these can be found at the end of the review.
Most mascaras have a chemical smell to them but this one is actually delightful. I was so pleased to be able to use something so scented and feminine -it actually made me feel very glad I had purchased it, but I tried not to get carried away until I tested it properly.
The case has a narrow part at the opening which ensures that when you pull out the wand it is coated evenly, and this prevents clumping on the lashes. The mascara also has natural oils and waxes in it which act as a conditioning treatment, and this is said to enhance the silky and soft look the product is designed to achieve.
I applied my normal two coats and was absolutely delighted with the results. The lashes were separated, had more volume and definition, and looked as good as the Maybelline product I had been using. Of course with mascara it isn't what it looks like when you apply it, as much as what happens to it over the course of the day and into the evening.
I am delighted to say that the mascara stays in place all day, and looks as good by the evening with no touch ups required. The other important aspect to me is that as I wear contact lenses the product must not be irritant, and over the last few months I have not had any problems at all with my eyes. There is no smudging or flaking either- so no problems there.
The price of this product makes it competitive with all the brand leaders in conventional make-up, meaning that for once you don't need to spend a fortune to be ethical.
Removing the product at the end of the day is easy, I just use cleansing lotion and it comes off easily and completely.
It is important, (as this product does not contain parabens which are there to enhance product longevity), that you check the use by date which is marked on the box. The ones I have purchased usually have two years, but of course once opened you should really replace frequently. I was advised by my contact lens practitioner three months is optimal to prevent infections. As this is a natural product I would adhere strictly to this especially if you wear lenses all day as I do.
Approved by the Vegan Society and certified totally organic this mascara not only performs as well as my conventional product, but actually outshines it in terms of fragrance-it is delightful.
I think if you like a natural look, but desire lashes to be defined and long, this product is perfect. If you want a highly dramatic -"false lash" look this will not suit. Personally I have found my dream mascara- it fits all my criteria- its fragrance is delicate and feminine, it separates lashes making them fuller and defined, the price is excellent, and most importantly it hasn't been tested on animals and is free from parabens.
