Lush Glamorous Lipstick
Advantages: Lovely colour, vegan, long-lasting
Disadvantages: Slightly drying, expensive
My favourite store, Lush, recently released a makeup line. I was initially sceptical, wondering how a shop noted for bathing products could produce good makeup. I was also less than convinced by the way it was marketed.
The new line, Emotional Brilliance, was sold as a range of colours designed to promote particular feelings. There are lots of bright colours in the range, which encompasses eyeshadows, eyeliners and lipsticks, and the idea is that you spin the colour wheel and choose the three which most stand out for you. I've done this a few times for fun, but I prefer to choose my makeup based on what suits me rather than which colours jump out at me!
In any case, I didn't actually choose this colour. A while ago I popped into the Gorilla Perfume pop-up shop in east London and when I made a purchase I was given a goody bag. This contained two lipsticks from the EB range - including this one.
This 'Glamorous' lipstick is a very bright bubblegum pink, much brighter than I would have chosen myself. It comes in an apothecary-like bottle with an applicator (a bit like a lip gloss applicator), made of glass with a black plastic top. You can clearly see the colour inside and how much you have left. The lipstick is suitable for vegans and the base is made up of a mixture of jojoba oil, candelilla wax and rose wax. These condition lips while providing a long-lasting carrier for the colour.
I find the lipstick slightly tricky to get right - I have to prep my lips thoroughly by scrubbing and applying lip balm or else the colour can 'sit' on my lips and dry them out. I find it better to apply several thin coats rather than one thick coat, blotting in between. Once on, though, the lipstick is a dramatic pink colour and it lasts surprisingly well, staying on for a good few hours. It would be possible to create a more subtle look with less product, but I reckon if I am using this I should be dramatic - I have plenty of subtle pink lip colours.
The lipstick doesn't bleed or come off too much on drinks glasses etc. I like the way it looks on me and I've been complimented on it, including by my mam, who is very honest and would certainly tell me if she didn't like it!
The lipstick costs £14.50 which is fairly expensive, and I don't know if I would have been willing to pay this - luckily I got this for free! It is a genuinely good quality product though, so maybe I would. It might be possible to track it down more cheaply on eBay.
Despite the high price, I do recommend this lip colour as it is dramatic and of good quality, and I wouldn't mind giving some of the others a go.
Summary: Good quality lipstick from Lush
