Lush Strong Lipstick
Advantages: Strong colour, goes on well, non-drying, lasts ages
Disadvantages: None particularly
My favourite store, Lush, recently released a makeup line. I was initially sceptical, wondering how a shop noted for bathing products could produce good makeup. I was also less than convinced by the way it was marketed.
The new line, Emotional Brilliance, was sold as a range of colours designed to promote particular feelings. There are lots of bright colours in the range, which encompasses eyeshadows, eyeliners and lipsticks, and the idea is that you spin the colour wheel and choose the three which most stand out for you. I've done this a few times for fun, but I prefer to choose my makeup based on what suits me rather than which colours jump out at me!
In any case, I didn't actually choose this colour. A while ago I popped into the Gorilla Perfume pop-up shop in east London and when I made a purchase I was given a goody bag. This contained two lipsticks from the EB range - including this one.
It comes in an apothecary-like bottle with an applicator (a bit like a lip gloss applicator), made of glass with a black plastic top. You can clearly see the colour inside and how much you have left. The lipstick is suitable for vegans and the base is made up of a mixture of jojoba oil, candelilla wax and rose wax. These condition lips while providing a long-lasting carrier for the colour.
This 'Strong' shade is a very bright orangey-red and it's certainly not a colour I would have chosen - I like red lipstick but tend to go for darker, more blue-toned shades. However, after trying this a few times I really like it. I find that it goes on much more easily than the 'Glamorous' pink shade I have - the latter was rather drying whereas this 'Strong' shade is much creamier. I can sometimes get away without prepping my lips properly, though I do prefer to be thorough and scrub my lips first as well as applying lip balm.
It is possible to dab a little of this lipstick on to create a subtle look, but I prefer to go all out with the dramatic look - I have plenty of lip glosses for less obvious looks. I tend to apply two or three thin layers of this lipstick, blotting in between. Like the other shade, this doesn't bleed or smear, so long as I'm careful to stick to my lip line in the first place.
Once on, the lipstick feels very light on my lips and doesn't dry them out. In fact I feel it is fairly moisturising and conditioning. I do love the colour - it really brightens up my face and also my mood, especially when the weather is a bit rubbish. I think 'Strong' is a good name for the lipstick - it does make me feel better able to face the world, silly as that may sound!
The lipstick costs £14.50 which is fairly expensive, and I don't know if I would have been willing to pay this - luckily I got this for free! It is a genuinely good quality product though, so maybe I would. It might be possible to track it down more cheaply on eBay. I think I would more readily pay a high price for this shade, rather than the pink one I have, mainly because the pink shade can be a little drying.
Overall I love this 'Strong' shade of lipstick and I've been much more impressed with Lush's makeup line than I thought I would be. In fact I am very tempted to go and try out some of the other colours!
Summary: Fabulous lipstick from Lush
