Advantages: Reasonable price, long lasting, blendable with other brands, good value for money, variety of shades
Disadvantages: more MAC stores please!
I stumbled upon MAC several years ago whilst working in a department store. The staff all looked so glamorous and the funky beats being played made me glance over to have a look.
I felt like a child in a sweetshop! Every single colour of the rainbow in so many different shades! I was spoilt for choice, I didn't know where to start! The MAC staff were fantastic, I cannot praise them enough! They quickly identified that I wanted all of them, but being practical this wasnt possible. They discussed with me what colours I liked and tested some shades on the skin. They made recommendations of what would look best, of which I often went with after all they are the professionals. I started off with a very small collection of mac eye shadows; I got contrast- a dark bluey/purple with light blue flecks in it and tilt; a light shimmery blue with a green two tone effect. I also bought some cover up products (See concealer review) and foundation so I was ready to roll. The MAC assistant applied everything and afterwards I felt fantastic and I looked half decent too, nothing compared to what I looked like when I walked it! I was sold!
Since then my addiction for MAC products has grown steadily. And I can honestly say that I don't really use any other products, well I do use a blush by Benefit only because I blend it with a MAC one. I have now over 35 different MAC eye shadows alone and concealers, blushers, liners, mascaras too! Once you find your favourites you usually stick to them!
If you are looking for eye shadows to wear to work I would definately recommend woodwinked! It has a velvety texture, antique gold and blends well with contrast, club and any daring colour you wish!I like woodwinked especially because on me it isnt too obvious and more neutral for work, on paler skin it stands out more. It has lasted almost 2 years and I wear it pretty much everyday to some degree. Because it is very smooth and soft to apply you dont need much when applying. This is a very common thing with MAC eye shadows, you often dont need much.
I normally wear woodwinked with haux-a satin in my socks to make them stand out a bit more. This is a matte shade an off rose colour but looks darker especially if you are applying on top of the MAC concealer (see concealer review). I blend these two together and line with costa richie eye kohl, which is very very soft and smudges quite easily ( I have found out that i am allergic to the MAC kohls so cannot wear them which is a shame). I finish with plush lash mascara in black to finish off the daytime look.
For a brow highlighter and for the inside corners of your eyes I use dazzlelight and ricepaper. Dazzlelight is slightly pinkish in colour and goes with blues and browns. Ricepaper is more neutral and goes with anything greys, greens etc. I strongly recommend either one of these, it really helps to bring out your eyes.
The newest colour I have purchased is club. Its a satin and very smooth to apply. The colour is mainly a deep green but there are shimmers of grey in it which means it can easily be blended with any green shades or greys( the darker tones are better). I have also blended this colour with my favourite woodwinked, with club in the outter part of the lid to widen the eyes. I have also blended it with contrast and parfait amour( i love this colour a vibrant purple colour fantastic with electric eel).
There is one colour that I purchased that I dont actually like. It's honesty and its a lustre and I have found that it doesnt actually show up on my skin and instead leaves glittery orange flecks with no base, matte colour. Wont be buying that one again!
Scene and electra are great combined with contract in the outter corners to get that smokey look without using black! I often use tilt under the bottom lash line to brighten up the eyes.
Amber lights is a very strong burnt orange colour, it is very intense so could be muted down with a brow shade I often wear with with bronze or mulch( although mulch does look better with haux). I haven't worn amber lights much because im a bit scared of how bright it is, but it does look really nice on.
My tip would be to go in there and speak to the MAC consultants and they will advise you what suits you, instead of you going in there all guns blazing and selecting everything that you like the look of!
Because the eye shadows are £10 each in store, if this is a bit steap I strongly suggest you wait until they have a particular range out, at the moment i believe its Cult of Cherry. This is because they often do cute little compacts with 4+ shades which works out alot cheaper than buying 4 seperate eye shadows. Christmas last year they had a fantastic range out, which make ideal presents for that someone special in your life. My Mum loved it! It came with 6 warm shades, a little brush and a mirror all enclosed in a antique gold case, how royal! This year they did another range called Barbie, which I didn't like much so didnt get anything so therefore I cannot make a comment. I did however like the fafi range and got a compact shimmer set in sassed-up which is brilliant to apply over a blusher when you are about to go out. Its also great because you really do not need to apply much, less is definately more!
I would strongly recommend people to purchase the base colours that they like/wear everyday depending on your skin tone. MAC products are easily blendable with other eye shadows but often last longer than the cheaper varieties. If you can afford to slash out, treat yourself to a few and mix with your other products that way you wont feel completely bad about spending too much on make-up!
And dont be put off my the young, attractive females working on the MAC counter, MAC isnt just for young people more mature ladies look fantastic when they are MACked-up! You can be made to feel like a million dollars in just a few minutes.
I am confident that the MAC shadows on offer will not disappoint you.
TIP: If you live in the UK, MAC also do a discount if they are in the department store Debenhams during their megaday spectacular. I believe the next one is the second week of November! So maybe hold onto your pennies so you can get even more for your money!
Summary: A fantasic range of products that wont disappoint you
