Advantages: Great for strong colours, very bold and deep colour when applied
Disadvantages: Not noticeably better than cheap brands for a subtle colour
After the disappointment of the MAC Paint and the elation of the MAC Pigment, I am now going to review the final eyeshadow product in my wedding makeup collection. The Pigment is fairly revolutionary, not by the fact it is a loose power eyeshadow but by virtue of the fact that it is a loose powder eyeshadow that actually works. The Paint is fairly rubbish really. Which brings me to the standard MAC Eye Shadow....
It is a single colour eyeshadow which comes in a round pot. I bought this in black for creating a smoky look and also a champagne/gold for my lid (I then used the Pigment up to my eyebrows). It cost £10 for each 1.5g pot from House of Fraser and MAC products are also available in Fenwick. The sales assistant was extremely helpful and spent ages with me as I deliberated over shades. She showed me how all the colour combinations I was looking at would blend together until I eventually decided which ones to purchase. I highly recommend MAC not only for their products but also their knowledgable staff.
The product comes in a matt black pot but it has a transparent lid which is just rimmed by black so that you can see the colour through without opening it. I found this helpful as I had two colours and it saved me opening both if I was looking for a specific one.
MAC describe this as a highly-pigmented powder which applies evenly and blends well and in my experience it completely lives up to these claims. I did not really expect it to be expecially brilliant as I was of the opinion that all standard powder eyeshadows are basically the same, it is only the price tags that differ, but I was very wrong.
Where I really noticed the difference was with the black colour. No wishy-washy greyish shades with this (as I had always found with black shadows in the past). It goes on the same coal black colour it is in the pot and it lasts very well. It can easily be mistaken for liner it goes on so dark and I really was very impressed by this.
The champagne colour was OK but I think because it is such a delicate and subtle shade anyway I could have worn something cheaper and you would not notice the difference.
I think my advice would be that this product is great but if you just want a light shade maybe it is better to go for a cheaper brand. However if you want a dark, bold and noticeable shade this is a very worthwhile investment!
The black pot lasted me about 6 months too which was great, although the champagne one cracked after a couple of months when I dropped it so it ran out quickly after that. This is the same with all powder shadows though, you do have to be careful not to break them.
Summary: Well worth it if you're looking for strong colours

- 18/02/09 I love MAC eyeshadows - I could easily buy most of the range (if only I had the money!) |
