Advantages: Easy to use, flexible, great choice of colours, lasts for ages!
Disadvantages: You get addicted to buying new colours!
As a huge fan of pretty much all MAC make up, I highly highly recommend their gel liners...they come in a huge range of colours, are really easy to apply, and you can mix and match so easily, for example, I love using a deep or bright colour and then doing a second line of silver or gold over the top for a really dramatic party look! Or combining a bright flick at the outer eye for a really dramatic look!
They're a perfect option for me, I find some pencils are too rough, go blunt to quickly, blend very easily when you want a harder edge to your liner for a bit more drama, and I find liquid can be a bit messy, too hard, or too thin sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I use all three, and each have their definite place in my make up bag, but there's something just extra special about the gel liners!
They're great combined with pigments too, and I've even used them on my lips as lip liner (Bright blue, with silver lipstick...for fancy dress I was a snow queen!)
I find they're great for colour choice, they do give a really nice silky finish, sit well over or under eyeshadow, you have total control over the line as you can decide on the brush shape and size, and I find it gives me more control than using a wand from a liquid liner.
Highly recommended, only problem I've found as with all MAC products, is that I can't stop building my colour collection!!
Summary: Buy a few colours, experiment, everything from really neutral and natural to wild and dramatic!!!
