MAC Prep & Prime skin
Advantages: Great primer, smooth skin
Disadvantages: Expensive, doesn't control oil well
MAC counters for me are usually a place of lust but no purchase. I love browsing the colours and occasionally accepting the makeup artists offers to transform my eyes/skin/lips etc but very rarely make a purchase, preferring instead to buy cheaper versions in Boots. However, a little while ago I decided that enough was enough with my oily skin as I was completely fed up of my makeup sliding off my face, especially on a night out.
I read in a magazine about Mac's 'Email an artist' feature where you could visit their website and ask a beauty question, getting both their tips on makeup application and which products would be best in return. This service is completely free and I emailed asking which products would be best to tame my oily skin. I received an email back really quickly with a very impressive intensive analysis of the MAC products that would be best for me. Mac prep and Prime skin base was the one product that the artist really recommended and so I decided that I would splash out and buy a more expensive primer in the hope that it would solve my skin dilemma.
A 30ml bottle of Prep and Prime skin base costs £16.50 and you can either buy it from a MAC counter or from the website. It comes in a little black cylinder shaped bottle that stands easily on your shelf and has the MAC logo on the front. I like to display this on my shelf at uni as it's so nice and looks like I only buy the best in makeup, sad I know!
The lotion itself is white in colour and has a very light consistency, disappearing into your hands if you rub them too much. Strangely there were no directions on the box or bottle so I'm guessing MAC expect you to buy this after a demonstration but it is intended to be smoothed onto your face before applying foundation. I apply the lotion after my usual toning and moisturising routine and was amazed at how smooth it made my skin feel. Applying my foundation on top was also much easier, especially my mineral powder as that can tend to stick in some areas. Looking in the mirror my face generally looked more even and my makeup more blended.
I left the house feeling chuffed that I had finally found a cure for my problem skin and was happy with my makeup until a few hours later when my T-zone began to get shiny again. It definitely wasn't as bad as normal but it still didn't control my oily skin. I still use the product most days as I love the way it evens out my makeup but I quite often mix it with my No 7 shine control base to keep oil at bay. One Tube lasts ages of this product too so although it's expensive it will last you months.
Overall I didn't like the way that this product didn't really keep the oil from appearing on my face but then again my skin is oilier than most so if you don't have this problem this makes a great primer.
Summary: 4 stars as it is such a good primer, loses one for non shine control
