I have always been a fan of the MAC 'studio finish' concealer which I have previously reviewed. I recently decided to give the 'select cover up' foundation a go, simply for a change and to see if I liked it any better than the 'studio finish'.
This concealer comes in a plastic squeezy tube. It has a little black lid on it which screws on and off. The concealer is in liquid form and easily squeezes out of the tube onto a finger or onto a concealer brush. I always apply my concealer with my fingers as I feel I can blend it better this way, anytime I have used brushes in the past I have felt like the concealer doesn't look as subtle. I would recommend taking care and squeezing only a small amount out of the tube at a time, as it comes out quite quickly and you can easily squeeze out too much meaning some is wasted.
I use this concealer to cover spots, blemishes and underneath my eyes. It blends really easily and unlike the MAC 'studio finish' concealer, it does not crease underneath my eyes. The concealer covers dark circles, spots and redness with ease and I would say it is 'high coverage'. I usually apply this concealer in the morning over the top of my foundation. When applied this way it has lasted me all day and does not need reapplied or topped up during the day.
This concealer costs £14.50 for 10mls and comes in 11 different shades, which makes a change from the light, medium or dark you can choose in other concealers! I have always found the staff in MAC stores to be very helpful and will happily help you find your correct shade. I use the NW20 shade which matches my fairly pale skin perfectly. There is definitely a shade to suit everyone.
Although this concealer is more expensive than other brands you can buy, I think it is worth every penny for a quality concealer that blends easily and lasts all day. I would definitely recommend this and think I prefer it to my old favourite, the MAC studio finish concealer!
Thanks for reading/rating and I hope you found my review useful.
I bought this on an expensive whim when I bought my ruby woo lipstick because red lippie does not look good with a blotchy, spotty face. I have a red patch next to my nose that has always been there for some unexplainable reason. However, this covers it nicely. It is very light and it was recommended to me because I use a mineral powder foundation.
Overall I like it, however if I have a big nasty spot crop up I will need a little bit of extra help from a powder concealer or a couple extra applications of this. So if you do need a heavier coverage I wouldn't go for this but try the other concealer mac has to offer which is a bit thicker.
The price is a bit hefty but I've had mine for a few months now and it still looks like I haven't used any, a little really does go a long way because of how light and creamy it is, I use it for under my eyes, around my t-zone and for any blemishes.
There are plenty of concealers created specifically for covering dark circles under the eyes but I have never found one that works as well as the MAC concealers for dealing with the dreaded dark circles. Select cover up is reflective, without the light bouncing off of your eyes in photographs. It is creamy and moisture rich, without being oily and prone to sliding off. It is a thick enough coverage to deal with the dark circles, but not so thick that it settles into every fine line.
Being MAC, the range of colours is fabulous. It's almost impossible to find just the right concealer colour for my skin tone but I can always rely on MAC NW20 (and NW15 in the winter!). It always frustrates me when I see concealers come in three shades 'Light, medium, and dark' as that assumes that everyone will be covering the concealer with foundation. For day to day make up I use concealer under my eyes, a patch of primer or red reducer in my weak areas, and a light powder. Being able to match my concealer to my skin makes a huge difference.
There are a couple of disadvantages with this concealer and whether or not they will make a difference to you purchasing depends very much on how you use your concealers. The first is that it dries to a powder finish when I apply to my nose (I have a red nose, much like santa claus) and looks cakey. My solution to this... don't put it on my nose... The second is that it isn't as long lasting as the MAC Pro-longwear concealer, but as the name suggests, that is specially designed to be long lasting. I've moved back to this one from the pro-longwear however as I find the packaging much easier to use - I'm a big fan of the simple long nosed tube and not a fan at all of the prolongwear squeeze applicator.
Being MAC this comes in a large array of shades chances are you will find one that matches well; unlike many other concealers which i find tend to come in an even more limited palette than foundation and the end result is a covered blemish but one that doesn't match the rest of your face! I always find the MAC staff helpful and they will try out a few shades on you to find one that suits.
blemish. The product comes in a simple clear tube with the usual MAC branding. It is a liquid consistency and quite thick. It it easy to apply using either a brush, sponge or fingers. I find a little goes a long way and if I'm not careful to squeeze out a small amount I will suffer a surplus. It is easy to blend and gives a natural result despite its heavy coverage.
This works will with foundation or on it's own to cover up blemishes and dark circles. The coverage of this stuff is amazing! Most concealers don't even touch my dark circles but this makes a real difference and a tiny dab will cover a blemish in no time.
The downside is that while it is excellent at covering blemishes I find it can sometimes exacerbate them by clogging pores, so be sure to cleanse thoroughly!
Being MAC it is not the cheapest but the quality is good and my tiny tube has lasted a very long time.
Overall this is an excellent concealer for blemishes and imperfections that need a higher coverage than most concealers provide, though it can be a bit much for sensitive skin and ultimately make breakouts worse but if you need to cover something nothing I've tried so far beats it!
Like most woman i have tested a fair amount of different concealers to cover up unwanted blemishes, spots or the dreaded bags under the eyes. The majority have been alright but after a few hours have rubbed off or needed a hugh amount applied before they started covering anything - leaving me looking like i have been tangoed.
Two years ago on a trip to America, i discovered a MAC shop where i found the staff to be very informative, helpful and friendly. I explained to them my previous problems with concealers, which is when they directed me to MAC Select cover up and i have not bought another product since.
It covers my spots, blemishes and bags under the eyes. I have found that i also do not need to wear foundation as it leaves my skin looking clear and radiant. It does not leave my skin feeling dry and does not look patchy once applied.
It is also available for all skin types and colours, as it ranges in shades instead of simply giving you the option of either fair, medium and dark.
In order to apply it i would buy the MAC foundation brush ( or any other foundation brush) as it makes it easier to apply and reduces the risk of leaving you looking patchy.
Some may look at the size of the product and think that it is a lot of money for the size of the product, however, due to the fact it stays on all day you only have to apply it once throughout the day, therefore, i find a tube lasts me 3 months+ Similarly, I find i do not have to wear foundation (unless on a night out) which means less time applying make-up in the morning.
I doubt i will ever find a product that works as well as MAC Select Cover Up and will be using it in many years to come.
I have been using MAC select cover up for more than 2 years and would really struggle to use anything else. I originally started using after visiting the store for a make up lesson. Previously, I used YSL Touche Eclat under my eyes but never found that it properly covered the bags, nor did I find that it blended well with the foundation. This blends seemlessly with the foundation and I think it is like sleep in a tube! I find that it works best when it is applied using a concealer brush and one of the advantages of this is that it makes the concealer go a long way, ensuring that it lasts for absolutely ages. I have very light skin and in the past found that it was difficult to get an exact match with my skin tone but this was not an issue with the Mac Concealer. In conclusion, highly recommended, although a bit pricey, well worth every penny.
Being a girl (well woman)..I love make up. I can't help but buy cosmetics when I go shopping even when I'm only going to buy toohpaste or deodrant.
I used to wear Boots No 7 make up, stick concealer and mousse foundation. After a while I found the No7 concealer to be powdery and wasn't happy with the look I was getting from the product.
When talking make up with my friend, as girls do, she said that she had bought quite a few MAC products and found them to be good products. So I rang MAC and arranged for a make up consultation with a make up artist. My skin goes through breakout periods where I go from having really clear skin to a bad break out of spots that look nasty and red and make me want to hide indoors. So the artist used the select cover up concealer, followed by their Studio Fix powder foundation and I was pleased with the look that it gave. It hid my blemishes without it looking cakey or being able to see where the concealer had been applied.
The concealer is a liquid concealer and should be used first if using a powder foundation, and if using a liquid foundation should be applied over the foundation. I use a small fluffy eyeshadow brush to apply the concealer, which is how the make up artist applied it. This way you only need to squeeze a tiny amount onto the back of your hand and then just get a small amount on the brush and blend onto your skin. Using the brush makes it ideal for applying under the eye area as you are not dragging the skin under your eye with you finger which will damage the skin and later cause wrinkles. The concealer, I find, doesn't sit in wrinkles or lines or actually puffs out wrinkles as some concealers can.
This is by far the best concealer I have ever used and I don't think I will ever find the need to try or buy a different brand or type of concealer. I read not long ago in a magazine it was voted best coverage concealer (but can't remember which magazine it was or who it got voted best by..sorry). As you only need a small amount each time a tube will last you a long while...I think mine has lasted me about 9 months and I find it's that good at hiding your blemishes I am happy to use my concealer and go!!
I don't usually buy products from expensive brands such as MAC but I feel that everyone should invest in a good quality concealer, because cheap products could be bad for your skin.
My first concealer was the MAC Select Moisturecover. It covered my blemishes well, but it made me look a little orange so after using it for a while I visited the MAC counter at Heathrow Airport where the assistant told me to try the MAC Select Cover Up Concealer in the same shade. She put a little on me, but it was when I applied it for the first time at home that I fell in love with it. It matched my skin tone perfectly and did not make me look orange at all. It covers up my blemishes very well and does not irritate my sensitive skin at all.
The tube looks very small, but lasts very long because you need only the tiniest amount to cover any blemishes. I use a brush with this concealer, but you can use your fingers too. Also, you have to be very careful when squeezing the tube, especially when it's new and contains a lot of product because otherwise you will end up squeezing out too much.
This is the one make-up product that I cannot live without and the one thing I apply every day. I don't even have to reapply it.
The only disadvantage is that at £12.50 it's a little pricey but definitely worth it.

This is one of those products that I keep on coming back too, and I probably will until I don't need it anymore (might happen one day, eh?!)
It has quite a thick consistency which makes it perfect for covering up any blemishes you may have, but it's still nice and easy to blend it giving it a nice natural look, making you look almost blemish free! It's especially good when followed with a power to cover a little more.
I find it easiest to use with just my fingertips, dabbing it on, but it can also be used with any concealer brush.
I have found that it's only really suitable for using on blemishes etc rather than to cover up bags on the under eye area as it's a bit too thick for this and tends to crease a bit in this particular area, which is not really a great look!
Despite it being a little pricey, I would definitely recommend it, especially to anyone with anything a bit more substantial to cover up.
I have been looking for the perfect concealor for a long time now and most just tend to be way to thick and cakey for me. Good example is the MAC studio finish concealor (which I have now binned)...
Well this is not like that, the MAC select cover up concealer is 'the' one for me. I suffer from uneven skin tone, and being an asian, it is really difficult finding the correct shade which will also conceal effictively.
Well this is really light, doesn't feel heavy on the skin at all but covers brilliantly. It makes under eye circles, spots, acne scars etc disappear! Makes the skin look flawless with a semi-matte finish.
The tube is a great idea, much more hygienic compared to usual compact concealors. However when I first purchased this, I though the tube was way too small for £12.00!
I'm glad to have been proved wrong :) I've had this for about 8/9 months now, use it 5 days out of 7..and still have quite a bit left (about 30%)! A little definitely goes a long way. This will last you a long long time.
Can not recommend enough.
My Mum recommended this concealer to me a couple of years ago, and after using it, I don't think I will ever use another concealer.
On first thought, I didn't think it would last me long, but decievingly it does!
There is a perfect colour match out there for everyone due to MAC's extensive variety of colours.
The small nib makes it perfect for select cover up, but it can also be used with a small brush.
I love how the concealer is so diverse, it can be used after foundation to cover those annoying blemishes, or on its own to hide spots. I also use it on my lips to make them paler and ready for lipstick/gloss.
It doesn't make my skin greasy or dry out my lips and holds in place for the whole day, and is so useful to slip into my handbag as its so small!
I love select cover up, and would reccomend it to anyone.
Having used MAC eyeshadow and lipsticks for several years I decided on a splurge at Manchester Airports Duty Free to purchase the concealer to go along with my new MAC foundations.
I have to admit I am a brand junkie, with the majority of my make up produsts coming from MAC, Benefit, Chanel, Lancome, Clinique... you get the point. My main reason for this is that from experience I find that you pay for what you get. If I ever feel that Im hammering my credit card too much and should settle for a cheaper brand I always use it for a day and then throw it to the bottom of my over expanding comsetics bag, this is because once you have used quality products, the rest dont even come close to matching up to their expectations.
When I first saw the size of the tube I was quite dissapointed **'How will I be able to condone spending £11 on such a miniscule product?'** However after using it for several months and the tube still appearing to be relatively full this eased my worries. You only need to use the tiniest amount and it will brighten any dark circles under the eyes and blend away any pesky blemishes PERFECT.
It goes on with a light texture and dries to a natural finish, I do re-apply several times throughout the day but this is proabaly due to me rubbing my eyes alot from the irritation of an inch thick line of eyleiner. It comes in 11 tones so im sure theres one to suit everyone. The assistants on the MAC counters will be able to find the perfect shade for you.
If I was ever made to go make up free **God forbid for everyone elses safety** then I could probably do it with just this one product to lessen the blow!
I did try Studio finish concealer which comes in a pot similar to the eyeshadows, but I found this to dry out around my eyes and left my skin looking chalky, also for hygene purposes I dont think its a good think to keep dipping your finger into a pot and onto your eye then back into the pot.
Definately a staple product in my make up bag...so much so I have two of them (you never know if you might lose one!!!) so why not give it a go
Women end up trying mass amounts of different foundations, powders, and concealers. Once they find something they like, they eventually stop liking it after a certain point. I'm not sure why that is? I used to be in love with some Clinque foundation until I noticed my skin had changed with it. So much for being in love with something.
I guess a girls love of makeup is a lot like love/infatuation in real life. We go through life thinking we simply adore something until things change, and we need to move on. I've moved on from so many different *loves* it's too many to count. Some people may call this being wishy washy or fairweather.....mmm and ok they might be right.
In one aspect of my make-up life though, I am most certainly NOT little miss "Comme Ci Comme Ca". That's with this concealer by MAC. I'm not sure what chemist designed it but if I ever met him, i'd kiss him full on the mouth. This to me is the "wonder" cover and the closest thing to make-up magic i've ever seen.
I don't want to sound exagerative here. Everyone always goes over the top it seems, when they're writing about a product they happen to love or, at least "like a lot". I am being perfectly serious though when I say, this stuff is beyond good. It's at that next level of great where you feel so happy you found it , you let friends try some, then get a little possessive when they use too much.
I'm not one of those "MAC" junkies like I know a lot of women are. They buy MAC lipstick, MAC Eyeshadow, MAC Powder, MAC mascara, MAC face wipes, MAC lotion, MAC MAC MAC. They usually are uber obsessed with this Brandname. In some ways though, I can understand the obsession. After being introduced to the different pigment colors of MAC, I found my fave eyeshadow. Then, this little *Gem* of a concealer. So, suffice to say, I will be checking out more MAC cosmetics as my current cosmetics supply starts to dwindle. (Which you haven't seen my containers of make-up....Unfortunately, they're not dwindling as fast as I would have hoped...I can practically open up my own Boots Store).
***** Why this Concealer Can Make You Happy*****
Ever get up one morning and find you have a spot on your face that was NOT there last night? Yeah , most annoying thing in the world right? Your thinking to yourself " Huh? I washed my face last night! How did I get a spot???" Regadless of how it happened, you got it and now you have to *cover* it up.
So you run into your bathroom, since well you woke up late and you only have 5 minutes to not only brush your teeth and do something with your mess of hair, but also put your make-up on (Since you've had 20 almost accidents in the car realizing maybe your car isn't the best place to put your make-up on in, and I don't think the other people on the roads like it much either=)
So really, you only have about 2 minutes to do make-up. 120 seconds. That's pretty much just a swipe of powder on your cheeks, a quick brush of some neutral eyeshadow, your fave eyeliner, and mascara. Even doing that is cutting it close. Unless your concealer took you seconds to put on and rub in, and cover every little skin flaw you have.
Which believe it or not, this stuff does. If I go SLOW it still takes me about a minute to cover any flaws I have. And believe me , I have quite a few....a scar on my chin from scraping it while rock climbing.....a birthmark on my forehead.....undereye circles.....and, the occasional blemish. Every little thing you have this covers and covers perfectly. No one can ever see any flaws on my skin and I get so many compliments on how smooth it looks.
If you can cover every little flaw, have creamy looking smooth young skin, and get compliments....how can that not make you happy?
*****Does this stuff ever get used up??*****
The tube of this cover-up isn't that big. As a matter of fact, after you buy it, you might say "Ok, i'm going to go through this pretty quickly". What you'll find out though, is just the opposite.
I've bought this 4hree times now and have been using it for almost three years. I use it almost every day. That should tell you how long it lasts. I think the reason is because a little goes a LOOOOONNNNNG way. You only need to dab your spots and flaws with it.
If you use it sparingly, you'll get almost a full year out of this stuff. I don't know anyone that can go even half a year on the same concealer!
*****So Just How Much Are You Mmmm?*****
$14.00 (I used to buy it in the states, but I just found it in the UK for around 10 Pounds on Ebay).......Or at least that's what i've always paid for it. MAC stuff isn't normally "cheap" but it's not really expensive either. This stuff is around the same price as most of the same in Clinque or Lancome and works 10 times better. So, it's NOT going to break the bank.
Like i said, you can get this on Ebay or at a MAC store which is usually at various department stores. You might want to go online and see what locations are near you.
This concealer is everything it needs to be it;
1.) Covers fantastically
2.) Is reasonably priced
3.) Has a long shelf life
4.) Very compact and can be taken on the go
5.) Doesn't break you out or make your skin dry
I think anyone using this would be extremely satisfied with it's performance. If your not,....then...i'll buy it off of you. =)
The MAC Sales Assistant recommended me this product after I asked her which of their concealers would work best for my dark undereye circles. Having tried a lot of other concealers in the past I was sceptical that this would perform any better but decided to try it out regardless - you never know!
Described as 'liquid camoflage for the skin' it is said to 'brighten and lighten dark areas, erase spots and even out skintone.'
It is available in 11 shades - from the palest porcelain (NW15) to deep caramel (NC50) and chocolate tones. (NW50)
With such vast amounts of shades to choose from it is easy to find one that will work for you - wether you want an exact match or one slightly paler than your skin (effective for extremely dark circles.)
It retails for £11.00 for 10ml, which is really great value as it lasts an incredibly long time.
The consistency is very light & fluid, but it does dry quite quickly which can be tricky if you are not used to applying / blending your concealer in such a short time.
You only need a tiny amount of this - too much can look cakey and artificial.
It covered dark circles and acne scarring very well, leaving me with a fresh, bright eyed look.
Lasts throughout the day, especially if you set it with a light dusting of loose powder on top, though this is not entirely necessary.
However, due to it's fluid texture it does not well work extremely
well for covering pimples. Not bad, but I prefer a creamier, waxier textured Concealer such as MAC's Studio Finish SPF15 for this.
Can be worn alone or under foundation :-)
To apply I either use the MAC #224 brush, which is actually marketed as an Eyeshadow brush. It's fluffy domed shape works really well, leaving you with a super blended, diffused finish.
Fingertips also work well - I place 3 or 4 small dots under each eye then blend quickly and gently using my ring finger.
I then set the concealer with a small amount of translucent powder using a large, fluffy brush. This ups the coverage and also makes the concealer last longer with a more transfer / smudge resistent finish.
Overall, a great concealer. I will always continue to repurchase this. If you are looking for a good spot concealer though, this may not be the one for you.
I am a big fan of Mac products, and my make-up bag is full of their fantastic eye shadows, foundations, pencils and brushes, so thought I would give the concealer a go.
I didn't ask for a sample at the counter or to try it first, I just trusted that it would be good, asked the assistant for the correct colour for me (which she got spot-on straight away) and made my purchase.
Overall I am pretty pleased with the concealer, and it is excellent at covering any blemishes. However I do not find the coverage sufficient enough for my dark eye circles following a late night or bad night sleep. The product does give some coverage, and only a really tiny amount is needed (I have had my tube for nearly a year!), however, if I try to make a bit of a thicker application, I find it that after an hour or so it rather cakes into any fine line or dry skin that I have.
I would definitely recommend this product for blemishes, however, if I had tried the product first before I had bought it, I probably wouldn't have made my purchase and would have stuck with my usual YSL Touche Eclat. For people with out dark circles, it would probably be ideal and definitely worth the money.
