MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation SPF 15
After being a mineral makeup girl for a while now and seeing pictures of me and my not so perfect skin I decided to treat myself to a liquid foundation to help me along the way as my Avon mineral foundation wasn't really cutting it although I like the not wearing a lot of makeup look.
After a lot of searching on Google and endless reviews for the "perfect" foundation I decided on the company MAC but as they do a range of foundations I wasn't sure which one would be for me. I searched for reviews on their foundations and everyone raved about this particular liquid foundation called Studio Fix Fluid in SPF15. I went onto the MAC website for this foundation to see what they say about it and it seemed right for me, it has an SPF of 15, gives a matte appearance, long lasting, flawless look, medium but buildable coverage and oil free. As I never bought an foundation online before and I didn't know which colour to choose I decided to go to a MAC store and get colour matched after all I am paying £19 for this I want to make sure it is right.
I sat in their makeup chair and one of the artists took my makeup off to get my face ready to apply foundation on me. She first applied NW15 to my cheek and jaw line and said this colour was too dark for me so she then tried NC15, which is their lightest shade MAC do she said this was the right colour for me and continued to apply it to the rest of my face. She used their famous 190 foundation brush, which I noticed was slightly damp when it was applied to my face. I later found out they damp their brushes so they can get more of an even and flawless look to the skin. When she completed applying foundation she asked me to look into their mirror to see what I thought.
First glance I thought it looked lovely, it seemed to match my skin tone, which was a big problem for me as I am fair. It didn't seem like their was loads of foundation on and generally my skin looked a lot better, it looked and felt smooth. Instantly I was sold and thought it was the perfect foundation I ever bought and I was really glad I got colour matched. Off I went to pay for my 30ml £19 item and an extra £2 for the pump and walked away a happy bunny, although I think the pump should come with the foundation like other brands instead of charging an extra £2 for it.
After I met up with my husband and asked him what he thought of my new foundation, he said it looks nice but doesn't match the rest of your skin. At first I didn't understand what he meant and because he is a man I kind of ignored him, after all it looked great in the MAC mirror so what could be so wrong?
When I got home I looked into the mirror and it looked okay, I noticed myself the colour on my face didn't actually match the skin on my neck, which is very pale and my face looked a bit orange and yellow. I thought maybe it was because it was dark and would try again in the morning.
The following morning I got out my foundation brush (dry) and my new foundation and started to apply on my cleansed, moisturised face. I started inwards working outwards making sure I got every part and blended well. After I finished I looked into the mirror and thought something doesn't look right, my neck looks a lot lighter than my face. I didn't apply a lot of foundation at all, infact there was hardly on the brush when I applied it so I knew I didn't apply to much.
I walked around the house looking in very mirror to see if the light changed the way it looked, if it looked different from different angles etc. It still looked the same and I felt really disappointed after all I was colour matched by one of the MAC artists and was sure this was the right colour for me.
As I wasn't going anywhere that day I decided to leave it on and if it adapted to my skin though the day. Hours past and my skin still looked a different colour. I did some more research on the Internet to see if anyone else had the same problems and guess what? Other ladies who had bought this foundation in NC15 (their lightest colour) had the same problem. The foundation looked to orange/yellow for their skin tone.
I also noticed my skin didn't stay matte looking as they claimed it would so that was another down side to this product.
At night when I cleansed my face it didn't take a lot for it to come off, which is good as no one wants to cleanse their face over and over until all product has disappeared.
That night I asked a few ladies off Dooyoo for advice who have this product and love it (thank you), they mentioned about applying it with a damp brush, apply with a little moisturiser, use a light powder on top of the foundation etc. I tried all of the suggestions and for the life of me it just wouldn't work and stayed looking the same. I was forever paranoid that I didn't look right was forever looking in the mirror to see if the disaster colour died down a little and no luck there.
I emailed MAC to see what they could say as I couldn't get back to the store, and they basically said NC15 is the lightest shade they do and for pale skins like me this isn't good. Instead you should try applying foundation all down your neck. That wasn't the kind of response I was hoping for, I mean what if I am wearing a t-shirt or something low cut? Wear foundation on every bit of skin on show? Just not going to work.
In the end I have to say this is the worst foundation I have ever used for £19, and for that price and hype I expected it to be brilliant. I would properly like it if they made an even lighter colour with less yellow pigments so I didnt look so yello and ill looking.
I have now ditched this item and bought a cheaper foundation for £8, which I like and I have saved £11 in the process.
Sorry MAC but this is a flop for me and I wont be buying another MAC foundation for as long as I live.
Summary: Stay to cheaper high street foundations, they work better for me

- 09/11/09 Think I'll steer clear of this one then - tend to find it hard to gte pale enough colours in cheaper foundations! |

- 19/10/09 The new foundations are good! To say one cost £8! A review will follow when I have worn them a little longer. |
