Advantages: Good quality and price
Disadvantages: None for me
When it comes to buying make up I do like to try new products but I do have my favourite products that I use on a regular basis, I find that make up is quite expensive especially if everything runs out at the same time, however for me it is an essential so I try to stock up when things are on offer, I have also tried cheaper products in the past but have never been overly impressed with them. Recently I was in my local Superdrug and spotted a new range of make up called MUA (Make Up Academy) this is described as the high streets affordable make up ideal for every ladies make up bag. I had a quick look at the stand that they had set up for the make up and was drawn by the extremely low prices, I was actually shopping for some new eye liner and pressed powder so I decided to give the MUA eyeliner (as well as a few other products) a try, after all if I really hated it I hadn't spent much money on it and could easily purchase another brand.
The MUA Eye Liner looks just like another other eye liner I have tried in the past, it is basically a pencil which is reasonably thin and the main body is black with silver writing on it. The initials MUA are in the centre of the pencil with the name Makeup Academy written underneath, the words intense colour are also written next to the name, the words eye line and the colour of the pencil appear towards the bottom of the pencil with the ingredients listed on the back, all of this information is written in silver writing embossed into the pencil itself.
There is nothing overly fancy about the eye liner pencil, however the silver writing stands out nicely against the black background and it does tell you what you need to know.
The eye liner has a clear plastic lid which simply slides on and off of the top of the pencil, what I particularly like about this is that the lid also doubles up as a pencil sharpener for your eye liner, there is a small pencil sharpener blade inserted inside the lid that sits against the end of the pencil when the lid is in place, you then simply turn the pencil anti clockwise and it sharpens the end of the eyeliner with the remains collecting in the end of the lid. Emptying the lid is a little tricky as bits do get trapped in it however if you tap this on a hard surface they do dislodge and fall out.
For me there is nothing worse than a eye liner that you have to press quite hard on your eye in order for the colour to show, also I hate eye liners where you have to keep going over the same part of your eye several times in order to get good coverage. With the MUA eye liner being so cheap I did wonder if this would be the case with this one, however I was wrong, the first time I used the eye liner I was extremely pleased with how the colour on my eye was almost instant as I drew the pencil along my eye, I did go back over it for a second coat, however this was more for personal preference to make the colour a little darker and to ensure I hadn't missed any patches but I could have quite comfortable just done one coat and left it and I would have been more than happy with the coverage.
The end of the pencil was soft enough to allow you to put the eye liner on without having to press too hard, yet it wasn't so soft that it crumbled as you used it or sharpened it. The next thing I had to test was how well it lasted, again I have tried cheap eye liners before and they have not lasted very long at all, the first day I wore this eye liner I was extremely pleased to see that the eye liner lasted all day, I went to remove my make up before bed and was pleased to see that they eye liner was still in place, admittedly it had smudged a little under my eyes, however I had had it on from just after I got up in the morning until before I went to bed and I had also had a bath and had probably splashed my eyes with water, there are no promises for this product being water proof and it certainly isn't, however for me this is not a problem, so overall I was very pleased with how well it lasted, I didn't have to touch it up during the day at all.
As I have mentioned I purchased my MUA eye liner from Superdrug which is where MUA products are currently being sold. I purchased this eye liner for just £1.00, this was a real bargain and I was shocked that this was the full price for this product, it was this extremely cheap price that made me question the quality, however I had nothing to worry about as this was made to a high standard and an excellent quality product.
The MUA Eye Liner comes in a range of colours including
* Orangy Red
* Forest Green
* Black
* Rich Brown
* Royal Blue
* White
* Light Blue
When I purchased my MUA Eye Liner I went for the plain black, I only ever wear black eye liner and personally am not overly keen on coloured eye liners, however if you do like to wear something a bit different there is a decent range of colours to choose from and there is likely to be something for everyone.
I have been using my MUA Eye Liner for a while now and have been extremely pleased with it, the colour is as described, intense, the colour glides on smoothly without having to keep going over the same area several times and without having to press too hard so it will not make your eyes sore. This product doesn't make any promises to be suitable for sensitive eyes, personally I have had no problems with it but the ingredients are clearly listed on the back of the pencil should you need to check them.
What drew me to this particular eye liner is the extremely low price, it is excellent value for money and you will certainly get your moneys worth from it , the low price did make me question the quality of this item, however I have found it to be of a high quality and have experienced no problems with it at all.
I particularly like the idea of the pencil sharpener being built into the lid of the eye liner this is an excellent idea and means you can sharpen your eye liner where ever you are.
This range of make up seems to be very popular in our local Superdrug and will sell out quickly so I have taken to stocking up on my favourite bits whenever I am in the shop and they have them in stock, as the whole range is so reasonably priced I can afford to nip in a get a few extra bits to keep on a regular basis before it all sells out again.
Overall I have been extremely pleased with my MUA eye liner and would highly recommend this to anyone who uses this type of product and wants a good quality but affordable make up range, this certainly fits that category.
Summary: A nice eye pencil with built-in sharpener
