Makeup Academy Nail Varnish
Advantages: price, easy to apply, great range of shades, looks good
Disadvantages: chips easily, small applicator
MUA (Make up Academy) is a budget make up brand from Superdrug.
MUA have four collections of nail polish availabe - Glitter Quake, Nail Quake, Love Hearts and a standard collection. I will be discussing the latter.
There are 18 shades of nail polish to choose from including greens, pinks, clear, blue and even purple. The shades are simply named Shade 1, 2 etc. MUA recommend two coats of this nail polish for 'maximum impact nails'. They do not make any drying or longevity claims.
Each nail polish is presented in a little glass bottle which is squarish in shape. The plastic lid makes up half the overall height of the packaging and holds a neat little applicator want. The bottle design is plain and simple with 'MUA' written on the front and a small label at the back. The bottle can be recycled.
The bottle holds 6.2ml of nail polish. It is available from Superdrug stores and www.superdrug.com priced at just £1.00.
I am a big fan of the MUA range as it is dirt cheap and the products are actually quite good! I bought a few of their nail polishes earlier in the year. I normally use No7 nail polish but sometimes alternate to other brands including this one. I made a purchase of Shade 16 and Shade 2 but have since misplaced Shade 16 which is gorgeous pink colour - I will comment on both though.
I like to keep my nails at an attractive length and will apply nail polish when the mood takes me. The square shape of the lid took me a while to get used to holding as I am so used to rounded lids but I am a pro at it now. The wand isn't as long as I prefer and is one of the shortest wands I have used. The little brush on the end is of a decent quality and I haven't had any issues with stray strands. As you would expect, this nail polish has a typical nail polish scent.
This nail polish is of a decent quality. It isn't watery - it is very substantial without being gloopy. I use the three stroke method - one stroke up in the middle of my nail and one either end and this works fine for me. Application is easy despite the short wand. The initial colour strength does vary between the different shades. The pink shade looked good with one coat though I did add two for a more noticeable colour. Shade 2 is black and this definitely requires two coats for a block colour. I usually apply a base coat to protect my nails from staining.
The nail polish dries fairly quickly but I tend to leave it 5 minutes or so to avoid any mishaps. I then apply the second coat and allow it to dry fully to avoid any tacky layer. I have always been impressed with the results of this nail polish. The colour is smooth on my nail there is a nice shine once the nail polish has fully dried. I love using Shade 2 on my finger nails - two coats offers a strong black colour which I really like. It isn't much different to the No7 nail polish. I prefer a lighter colour on my toes (even though I never show them off) and Shade 16 looks good on them as well as my fingernails for a more subtle colour.
After 2-3 days (quicker if I have been doing a lot of housework), I notice that the colour on my fingernails starts to chip badly. It is easy enough to top of the colour with an extra coat (this prolongs the colour for a few days longer) but it never looks the same when I do this so I usually end up wiping it all off with nail polish remover. The colour does last longer on my toenails.
Cheap and cheerful nail polishes. There is a good range of shades on offer to suit all. I find it difficult to find nail polishes which do last longer than a few days and this falls into this category. I do like the shades on offer though - especially the black colour which has a gothy edge to it.
4 stars - good but not outstanding
Thanks for reading :)
Summary: worth the money!
