Item: Max Factor Colour Elixir Lip Liner
Colour: 06 Mauve Moment
Bought in: Boots
This is a real staple of my makeup bag and I have bought this on and off for years. It is an everyday colour and I buy it up in bulk whenever they do a 3 for 2 deal in Boots. I will tell you a bit about why I keep buying it :-)
This is standard lip liner in a wooden pencil form. The pencil is overall gold with a clear lid and the end 1.5cm of the pencil is coloured to match the colour of the lip liner. Which is handy as it means that even if the pencil is stored on it's lid you can still see the end and can tell the colour. The writing across the pencil is black and states "Max Factor. Colour Elixir Lip Pencil. 06 Mauve Moment." The text is small but you can easily read it as it is dark on a gold back ground, much easier to read than a dark background with a light text. The lid is 3cm long and is slightly tapered so that is secures once it is pushed down over the top 2cm of the pencil leaving a clear 1cm free so that no matter how sharp the pencil is, it will never bash off the top of the lid and get damaged. The lid stays on securely and is made of thick plastic and hasn't ever cracked when I have still been using it. I like the look of this lip liner. The gold colour gives it quite an elegant look and it is handy that the end shows the colour of the pencil too.
Application and wear:
The liner is actually quite soft, not so soft that it breaks when you sharpen it but it does "melt" and soften as it comes in to contact with the warmth of your lips. The colour glides easily from the liner to your lips and you don't have to "drag" it like many other lip liners I have tried. The liner is actually as thick as a lip stick in consistency but as you can have it sharpened as thin or as thick as you like, you can get the line you are looking for. I tend you line the edges of my lips first then dab the colour across the inner flesh of my lips to give them a defined shape but then I also want the colour across my full lips too. The lip pencil dries in very quick and you can actually lightly wipe your finger across your lips and nothing will run or smudge. Once this is dried I like to add a thin layer of gloss across the top to give my lips a bit of a sheen. The colour I wear is a warm deep browny pink and I feel that it looks lovely with a dab of clear gloss over it. otherwise it can look a bit dry. I have used this a Max Factor lip stick before, but for everyday use I find that the combination of lip pencil plus lip stick to be a bit bold for me. I can usually get at least 2 and up to 3 applications out of this before I need to sharpen it too, so that is handy as not always having to sharpen it. When I have this on I can usually wear it for around 2 hours before it requires any touch ups, and that is after lots of talking and tea drinking haha
As you can see from me saying I have been buying this for years that I like this pencil. The combination of a flattering colour with long lasting wear is great. I also really like that the lid stays on and that I can often get this in a 3 for 2 deal in Boots so get it for cheaper ha the usual £4.99 per pencil. The range comes in a lot of other colours to but this one particular shade suits me for every (or in reality every other) day wear haha
Max Factor for me is my brand of choice when it comes to what I really want to buy cosmetic wise. I do dabble with cheaper brands and other bits a bobs but as a general rule if I really need something I tend to opt for Max Factor cos I like the middle of the range prices, quality, packaging and its a familiar brand to me with both my Mother and my Grandma having used it all of my existence!
Up until the past couple of years though, even though I am a qualified Beauty Therapist by trade I haven't really took a lot of notice of lip pencils. Yes I have in the past tried them but felt that as long as I had a good quality lipstick and the likes that I didn't really need one however as soon as I got closer to approaching 40 (I'm coming up 39 now!) I have had a change of heart.
As we get older we lose the definition in our lips, well I certainly have anyway. Years of smoking has led to fine lines around my lips and the likes and so I bought a couple of lip liners to see if I get more shape and definition to my lips and one I chose was from Amazon and it cost me just £3.98 new from Amazon.co.uk with p&p and I opted for the colour 'Purple Triumph' from Max factor as I'd just bought myself a new purple coloured lipstick../......edging away from my bright red options and really wanting to refresh my appearance a bit!
The Pencil Itself:
Well the pencil is slim and black in outer colour and has a matching long plastic lid to protect the nib to one end of it, the other end of it there is a colour coded band and then down the side of it we are clearly told what it is and who it is by and the weight is stated which is 82g and contact details are clearly stated for Max Factor. The style and overall appearance of this pencil is very smart indeed and in keeping with the rest of the Max Factor products currently available in my opinion.
This is as I have already mentioned is slim and it is quite long and I guess standard size for a product such as this. It is made from fine quality wood which is really easy to sharpen with a good quality pencil sharpener you need to own yourself and the colour is moist to the nib though is a block of colour and not a liquid.
This is very simple to use and I use it to line my line my lips of course. It transfers easily and with no clumps to my lip outline, its moist without being sticky and its quite matt which means it doesn't smudge when on or bleed out.
I can use this to cheat shape with my lips slightly, it stays put for hours and really does contain my lipsticks and glosses moving beyond the line and I think once applied I get a couple hours of good colour and definition from this lip liner which is very good in my humble opinion!
It doesn't need sharpening very often though I do tend to do it every few uses just to keep the nib pointed and less blunt so I can get precision.
All in all this is a great buy for me and it does what I expected from it and and wanted it to. Its easy to use, stays put ages and helps my lips to retain a nicer shape so yes even if you have to pay full price for this, which is about £8.00 a colour I think its worth it and there are many colours available to purchase this in from nudes to very dark shades........Google if interested though for cheap prices and do try Amazon as I do for my make up and to make some much needed savings!
