Bought this mascara after reading few reviews and I have to say it was my big discovery! First of all the smell - not strong, actually almost insensible which for me is a huge advantage as I hate strong smelling mascaras (I got feeling they have to be packed with chemicals!). The second thing was brush - not too big, not small; perfect for fine lashes, provides a great coverage from the first touch with your eyelashes.
I have fine, light lashes as I'm natural blond so I need mascara that allow me to put 2-3 coverage without clumps. This mascara definitely won't let you down in it! If you like natural look, which only accent your beautiful eyes, one coat will be perfect - would lift, separate and colour your lashes enough. If you want to get more sexy and evening look simply put 2-3 layers and you won't see any crumbles or clumps! I was amazed, because almost all mascaras I used before Max Mactor Mastarpiece Max were leaving my lashes stiff and I was finding crumbs of product under eyes which was quite annoying! With this mascara my eyelashes are flexible even with 2 layers on and they seems to be nicely covered without any stiffness.
Black/gold packaging is elegant and very nicely looking. It's comfortable to hold while you apply mascara and long enough to do that precisely.
It doesn't dry out and lasts about month, while using everyday, which is great because some mascaras dries out very quick and it's hard to put them on after 2-3 weeks! This one is different and allows you to use it until it's really empty.
One more advantage: I have quite sensitive eyes and many mascaras I had before irritated them and my eyes burned, but this mascara is very comfortable to wear, no tears and no burning!:)
Only one thing I didn't like in this mascara was the way it dissolves when you remove make up - I always put a cotton pad with my make up remover into my eye, hold it a bit and than wipe the eye make up delicately; this mascara dissolves in small crumbs that goes to your eyes and may irritate them a bit. It's not very nice feeling, and I prefer when mascara just melts and goes off rather than crumble.
Overall I would recommend this product, because it's really good mascara, one of the best I've had by now and I used two before I decide to change it for another to try something else (also Max Factor - see my other review!)
What can I say, except that I am a huge fan of this product and have used it non-stop since it came out a few years ago, so I think I'm pretty well-qualified to write this review! Just to advise you, I use the brown/black shade, as I find it looks more natural than jet black, but also gives a noticeable effect. The mascara is also available in black or navy blue though.
APPEARANCE & FEEL
The packaging is fairly simple, but the classic combination of black and gold give it a timeless, sophisticated appearance - I particularly like the gold-tipped lid. The wand itself is fairly short and perhaps looks unremarkable compared to some of the wackier Rimmel/Maybelline 'Cat Eyes' types of mascara out there, but the magic is in the simplicity my friend! This small but mighty brush features very fine bristles which offer up a beautifully even coating of mascara to your lashes. Because of its small, cylindrical shape, the wand is also easy to hold and allows excellent control and precision when applying the mascara.
PRODUCT & APPLICATION
From the first coat, Masterpiece Max slides on like a dream and immediately separates, lifts and colours your lashes and one coat is probably enough for those who prefer a more natural look. I tend to use 2 or 3 coats as I like to wear a fair amount of eye make-up most of the time, but this is ultimately down to personal preference. When applying this mascara, I tend to allow a little drying time between each coat, as this really helps to avoid clumping. Once I've applied a a couple of coats, the end result is always eyelashes that look longer, thicker but in no way clumpy or flaky. You can even apply further coats if you want a really dramatic look for a night out, and it your lashes will still look defined and flake-free.
Another brilliant feature is how well it holds a curl in your eyelashes - I find that most other mascaras, apart from really expensive ones, are extremely frustrating as your lashes will drop flat a second after using the eyelash curler. There is no such problem with Masterpiece Max - I apply the curler after the first coat of mascara dries, and this is enough to set my lashes in a curl which holds after applying subsequent coats and lasts for the rest of the day.
WEARABILITY & DURABILITY
Masterpiece Max is definitely one for the long haul - it lasts, pretty much perfectly, all day and night. I wear it everyday, but it's been especially good when I've had to get up for early morning flights in the past - I applied it the night before and it lasts right through to the end of next day, even after hours of travelling through time zones!
My only comment/suggestion for MaxFactor would be to please bring out a waterproof version of Masterpiece Max! Although it is very very durable, it doesn't hold up if you are swimming or caught in heavy rain and will smudge in such situations. It may be useful to know that there is a waterproof version of the original Masterpiece product, but it's not a patch on this mascara.
In summary, I've tried so many different mascaras over the years and I can wholeheartedly say that this is genuinely the only one I ever buy and would consider buying. It is far, far superior to any other brands within its price-range, and I really think it's much better than most high end luxury mascaras too.
In a day and age when we're bombarded by a raft of ridiculous make-up adverts offering totally unrealistic results from mascaras, this little beauty will really live up to your expectations.
I've been trying several Max Factor cosmetics recently, as I received a small gift cube of products for Christmas. One of the products included was a miniature Masterpiece Max High Volume & Definition Mascara.
My miniature comes in a black tube with gold writing. As far as I can work out it is basically the same design as the full-size product. The mascara wand is a 'standard' wand, which tapers slightly towards the end. No fancy wands or vibrating handles here! The brush is described as a "high tech IFX brush", but it doesn't look particularly fancy to me - still, if it works that's all that matters!
This mascara is described as a high impact volumising mascara that doesn't leave lashes clumpy and clogged. It is claimed that it produces bold, thick lashes with up to 400% volume, while defining and smoothing at the same time. The mascara is available in blue and brown/black as well as black.
I find the mascara is easy to apply and the tapered wand means that I am able to reach smaller lashes with ease. It doesn't smudge which is very handy when I blink or sneeze while waiting for it to dry! I normally use one coat of this mascara for every day, and add an extra coat if I'm going out.
One coat of this mascara provides long, defined lashes with no clumps. I am very impressed by this as it is very rare for a mascara to provide no clumps at all. My lashes are individually defined and look quite a bit longer. I have naturally short lashes so I'm pleased with this. I don't get a lot of volume, however I don't want an over-the-top look most of the time. One coat provides an ideal daytime look.
There are no clumps with a second coat either. My lashes still look long and defined, but there is a bit more volume. This look is nice for an evening out but perhaps not dramatic enough for a serious night out.
The mascara does not smudge or flake off throughout the day. Though it is not a waterproof mascara it doesn't come off when I'm in the gym unlike some cheaper mascaras. However it can be removed with normal eye makeup remover.
Overall I really like this mascara. I love the way it makes my lashes look especially during the day. I think I might prefer a different mascara for a proper night out but would certainly repurchase this for use at other times. It costs £9.99 which is more expensive than other brands in Boots and Superdrug but cheaper than premium brands. I feel it's very good value for the price as it is so good. It is often on offer, e.g. 3 for 2, as well. Recommended by me.
I'm always on the hunt for a good mascara and will spend a fortune finding 'the one', and after finding that Rimmell mascaras flake quite quickly and easily I wanted to find something that would last longer so who better than to go to than max factor, 'the make up of make up artists'?
Packaging: the packaging is sleek and quite sexy with its black tube and gold writing and definitely says to someone 'they spent a good bit of money on me' which is what every woman wants, no one wants cheap looking make up even if you did spend a fortune on it. The mascara wand almost glides out of the tube and doesn't have that worrying pumping action that fills you with dread thinking a ridiculous amount of air is getting into your product, and the wand itself is thick enough to get all of my lashes at once but the right side to allow me to gain control and do a good job.
Application: I always look for a mascara that has the whole package, which is; thickening, lengthening and separating. I daresay this mascara only does one of these which is lengthening, and when attempting to encourage the latter with a few coats I was left with clumpy, stumpy lashes that were fused together with a thick coating of product, quite surprising for only the second coat! With one coat though the mascara does last a long time and doesn't flake or bring down the lashes to 'flatten the flutter' midday, I found that my eyes looked wide awake at the end of my shift which was impressive.
I do think that this is a great mascara and its luxurious enough to be worth the price but I would only use it during the day, I don't think it's a suitable 'nighttime make up' and probably wouldn't impress on a night out.
I'm a huge fan of Max Factor products and was pleased with this mascara, but was not particularly excited by it. Physically, the mascara looks gorgeous in a black and gold sleek tube. The applicator brush itself is quite small, allowing for precise strokes and smaller lashes nearer the corners of the eye to be reached. This was a great bonus and felt like an additional feature as individual mascaras designed for these smaller lashes are now available.
The applicator wand was easy to use and spread the mascara evenly across my lashes.
Personally, I tend to steer towards mascaras that give me lashes a bit of 'oomph' - thickening, lengthening and seperating my lashes simulataneously. Unfortunately, this product only managed to do the latter two to my lashes. (I do, however, have quite long, dark lashes naturally).
I did attempt to apply more than I usually would in the hope of building up my lash thickness, but ended up clogging my poor lashes into clumps!
I found my Masterpiece mascara had smudged ever so slightly after a full day of wear creating a slight shadow under my eyes. It was barely noticeable to others, but a quick wipe under my eyes sorted it out and I didn't have to re-apply or wipe my eyes again for the entirity of my evening out.
This mascara is great for a more natural, pretty look. I'd advise a thicker mascara - such as Max Factor's False Lash Effect - for evenings and parties or if you prefer more defined eyes. I found the mascara to be very pretty and to work well in creating long, evenly spread lashes but felt it was missing that little extra kick that other mascara's can give my lashes.
Max factor is a trusted brand in the beauty world alongside the likes of revlon. Even though they are trusted and have built up a good reputation over the years their prices remain decent.
I have been buying this mascara for the past 12 months from Boots for £9.99 which I think is good value for money compared to other makeup brands like clinique and MAC.
The wand of the mascara is my favourite aspect of this mascara product because the bristles are thick but individually quite spread out so the application process is simpler than using small, tightly compact bristles on a mascara applicator. It does not bend or curve like some other applicators but I prefer this as it is straight and sturdy. I like applying a few coats of mascara and the bristles help to spread out the mascara evenly so that my eyelashes don't look clumpy or stuck together.
The mascara itself is blackest black which is perfect for a mascara as it gives the dramatic effect that I like from mascara. The mascara is waterproof, I always buy waterproof mascaras as there's nothing worse than having black mascara run down your face and ruin the rest of your makeup.
I do not need to reapply this mascara again so it does last for a good 4-5 months.
This mascara is available from Boots at 9.99 but you may be able to find it cheaper if you look online. I would recommend this mascara to a friend and I rate it 5 stars.
After not getting on well with Soap and Glory's thick and fast mascara, I decided to try out a different mascara. I had no idea where to start so I went on the Boots website and searched for mascaras using the 'top rated' button so that the highest rated mascaras would come up first. One of the mascaras that was rated highly was the masterpiece max mascara from Max Factor. After reading several reviews I decided to go ahead and buy it.
Masterpiece Max mascara comes in a black tube with two gold rims around the tube. I find the colour scheme makes this mascara look very classic. On the tube it says that the mascara gives high volume and definition. The only problem I have had with the packaging of this mascara is that when I got it it was so tightly packed in plastic that I found it very hard to remove it, and there still it a bit of plastic left on the tube as I just can't get it off.
Looking on the Max Factor website, this is what it claims about the mascara: 'Masterpiece Max Mascara is the next generation of mascara. It delivers bold, thick lashes with up to 400% volume but defines and smoothes at the same time for a surprisingly, sleek effect. One swipe of its high tech IFX brush gives a chic, catwalk finish in seconds.' This is exactly what I was looking for. A mascara that delivers volume without the clumps.
Using the mascara is fairly easy. You just unscrew the lid and pull out the wand. (I've heard that pumping the wand in and out the tube dries out your mascara quicker, so instead I just swirl the wand in the tube once and then slowly pull it out). The brush is actually a small brush, which I find makes it easier to apply the mascara to your eyes. To apply the mascara I just open my eyes wide and then run the brush along my lashes.
I find the results really are incredible, I think it's the best mascara I have ever used. After one coat my lashes look long and thick, they really do add volume to my lashes. I find one coat is enough volume for a day time look, but if I was going out at night I often add 2 coats. This again adds even more volume to my lashes, but the really good thing is that it rarely makes my lashes clump together. Okay so occasionally when I add a bit too much mascara then there can be a few clumps, but I find this to be my fault and not really the mascaras. Overall when I use the mascara it adds incredible volume to my lashes without clumps.
(I have only had this mascara about 3 weeks so I can't comment on whether this mascara drys out or not).
If you want this mascara you can buy it from places like Boots for £9.99 for 7.2ml of product. It comes in three colours black, black brown and deep blue. I got it in black brown but that was actually an accident as I wanted black but didn't realise I had selected black brown until I had bought it. But to be honest it just looks black when applied so I'm not bothered.
Overall this is a fantastic mascara and I think I will be sticking to it from now on!
51 out of 62 people rated this mascara 5 stars on Boots.
Mascara is on of the most important products I own, being a natural redhead I have very blonde eyelashes and eyebrows, meaning that when I don't wear mascara I have very bald looking eyes! Although eyelashes seem fairly insignificant, I think they're some of the most important things on your face - if your eyelashes look bad, your eyes look bad and your eyes are the windows to your soul, so you don't want that! I've been through my fair share of trials and tribulations with mascaras, but I think I've finally found a keeper. It's one that I repeatedly repurchase and stock up on just in case of emergency and it goes by the name of MasterpieceMAX by Max Factor.
I initially purchased this one after Max Factor went and changed the formula of False Lash Effect - my old trusty friend. It ended up clumpy and disgusting, so I moved on and found something else.
MasterpieceMAX comes in a long, thin black tube with gold accents. It's described as a high volume & definition mascara - something that I always look for in a mascara anyway. I hate the clumpy look that says it gives you really thick looking lashes but in actual fact makes you look like you have two reeeeeally thick eyelashes. Not pretty. High definition is a big must for me!
The tube states that this is also suitable for contact lens wearers, something I rarely see printed on mascara tubes - it's usually hit or miss. Not that it matters for me as I don't wear them, but it's nice to know I can keep using this if in the future I need lenses.
It's important to point out that there is also a 6month use by date on mascaras - they are a creamy product that can harbour a lot of bad bacteria after a while - you really don't want that spreading into your eyes. Please follow these guidelines to avoid any infections.
The wand just screws out like a regular mascara wand, but it's actually quite stiff. This is another bonus for me as it means it won't come loose in my makeup bag or anything, meaning the product inside won't dry out as quickly as looser wands would allow. The mascara brush itself is made out of plastic instead of bristles, this is my favourite kind of brush as I find it provides more definition without compromising on volume and length. The brush itself is roughly 1 inch long and not too thick, so you can coat your whole eye with one swipe of the brush without poking yourself in the eye because it's too thick and chunky. It's also slightly tapered at the end so that you can use the shorter end for shorter lashes, the flexibility of the brush also allows movement into the inner and outer corners, providing full coverage for all of the lashes.
Upon first opening this mascara I found that it was quite a thin consistency, but still very creamy and opaque. It certainly looked like a good quality product on the brush. Application couldn't have been easier, just a quick coat of the lashes with a little extra focus on the inner corner to ensure they were all covered and then another coat or two for added volume. This mascara does slightly thicken up after roughly a week of use, but I prefer the consistency of it that way anyway. Although the mascara works perfectly well brand new, I need less product once it has thickened up slightly.
You will notice that the brush starts to pull out more product after a while, but this can easily be wiped away or just applied carefully to lashes making sure to spend extra time spreading the product evenly.
I also use this on my bottom lashes.
1 coat of this mascara leaves the lashes defined and pigmented - this looks very natural and would be perfect for someone with natural volume in their lashes.
2-3 coats of this mascara adds the extra volume that my lashes need without ruining the definition that the first coat gave me. I often get compliments on how defined my lashes are as it's quite common for girls my age to be into the clumpy mascara look.
4-5 coats give a perfect false lash look. They look thick, dark black and super defined - perfect for a night out!
This is not a waterproof macara, however I have been known to cry quite a bit and this only starts to run if I'm having a proper sob fest. Bonus points!
Removing it also couldn't be easier, I use my Clinique facewash to remove my makeup and then use it again to cleanse my skin. Every trace of mascara comes off with this. I do find it a little harder to remove with a face wipe if for some reason I need to use one, but with a little extra time you'll manage to get every trace of makeup off without being left with that dreaded panda eye smudge.
My eyes have suffered no irritation since using this mascara.
MasterpieceMAX comes in a 7.2ml tube and it lasts me roughly 2-3 months depending on how heavily I use it. I usually use 4-5 coats of mascara for a night out as it gives me a complete false lash effect without the hassle of actually using them, so if I have a lot of nights out planned, the mascara obviously gets used up quicker. Fortunately, this mascara is very affordable at £9.99 from Boots - this is often included in a 3 for 2 deal and this is when I stock up.
Max Factor can also be found in Superdrug and certain supermarkets.
The mascara comes in Black, Blue and Brown, so if you prefer a more natural look, you might want to try the brown or if you're Katy Perry then the blue is for you!
I genuinely don't have anything bad to say about this mascara, therefore will be giving it 5 stars and not pointing out any disadvantages as I can't think of any!
Thanks so much for reading! All reads and rates are currently being saved up for my trip to New York, so it's highly appreciated.
Max Factor is a range that I am really beginning to trust and rely on after trying several of their products and getting some great results. I received a free gift set when making a previous Max Factor purchase, and one of the items included in my goody bag was this Max Factor Masterpiece Max Mascara. It is a smaller sized product containing 5.3mls and this is great as the smaller packaging makes it easier to carry around and is handy for travelling. There are several other variants of this mascara, but this review specifically refers to the Masterpiece Max High Volume & Definition version.
Max Factor seem to do a good job with creating different brushes, and I really like the brush on this mascara. It has the usual wand style applicator but the brush tips are made of a rubbery type material and there are lots of little spikey bristles that go all the way around. The bristles are arranged so that on one edge they get smaller towards the end of the brush, and this is really useful for getting a neat application towards the inner corner of the eye, and on the lower lashes.
Nowadays the trend with mascara seems to be going for the biggest, thickest, false lash effect. I must admit that I have fallen in with the crowd on this and love a nice volumising mascara that makes my lashes look thicker. I am a fan of strong eye make-up and like my lashes to really stand out. I usually go for a volumising product like this to go with my evening look, as I want it to be more noticeable than my subtle daytime make-up. Then first problem I encountered was that as soon as I applied the mascara there seemed to be too much of it coating the brush, and this overloaded my lashes. As time went on and I continued using the mascara the problem got better and this allowed for a more even application.
The Masterpiece Max mascara gives a nice look with one coat applied as it lengthens, darkens, and thickens the lashes to make them noticeable and more defined. However, as soon as I start to apply a second coat it instantly goes lumpy and my lashes start to stick together in clumps. This has happened each and every time that I've tried to use 2 coats, which would normally give a more dramatic effect, but in this case just looks cheap and tacky. I was disappointed by this as one coat doesn't give the "wow" factor and I wanted to get that extra little boost from wearing 2 coats, but it just looks awful.
I have now reserved this one for daytime wear only, as the brush seems to handle applying one coat neatly. I like that this does lengthen and add some thickness to my lashes, and it also has good staying power. My lashes are held nicely in place all day and I never have any problems with smudging. The small travel size mascara has lasted me for the best part of 6 months which is great considering that I have used it practically every day to go with my office-appropriate work make-up.
I'm glad to have received this as a free gift, as it is sort of a middle-ground mascara that doesn't seem to perform as it should. I was expecting something that would give me impressive, full lashes that would stand out as part of my heavy make-up look that I choose to go for on evenings / special occasions. Because of the clumping issue I stick to applying one coat, which means that it isn't dramatic enough, and is better suited to wearing in the day with a more natural look. I'm disappointed that this can give such messy results and wouldn't make a purchase of this myself.
I absolutely love make up so go through a lot and constantly vary what I buy, as I love to experiment and try all the latest things on the market! This mascara is without doubt one of the nicest I have used in a long time!
It was so easy to apply, with the wand brush being just the right size - not too skinny and not so fat you end up looking more panda-esque than anything else. The brush remained unclogged with every application which is rare and very impressive. There was only the teeniest bit of spider legging going on just as the mascara was about to run out, which I think is excusable as I had literally used it to death.
To wear, the mascara felt initially a little heavy, but this didn't last long after drying and to be honest, I really forgot that I was wearing it at all. It was very durable and I often found that In was wearing it throughout the day and then on into the evening without the need to top up or refresh! Maybe a little gross on my part, but hey, we're all busy and I was only too pleased to have found a mascara that could run the course!!
I have really gotten into max Factor mascara's lately. I normally buy the Max Factor False Lash effect mascara, but I was desperate and my current mascara had completely run out. I was in Tesco and the one I wanted to buy had sold out so I took a gamble and bought this instead.
Price and availability:
I paid just below ten pounds for this in Tesco. A wide range of places sell Max Factor products, from specialist beauty stores, to super markets and general drug stores. The price should be pretty similar in all of them, but whether or not they stock the mascara probably depends on the size of store and size of range.
The mascara comes in a tall thin black tube. It has a screw on and off lid whcih is nice and secure, so wont leave accidents in your make up bag! The applicator brush is bristly, with lots of short spikes. When the mascara is new it is very easy to make it look too clumpy. After a couple of days use it is much easier to get a nice finish to the mascara. You can get this in black, or a very dark brown. I bought black and was very pleased with the colour. I know this sounds crazy but some black mascaras can be very harsh. This one wasn't. The mascara did not irritate my sensitive eyes which was a massive bonus. It also had really good staying power, it lasted all day and only wore off at night when I started rubbing my eyes. If I was to wear this day and night I would just give it a quick top up before I went out again at night. There would be no need to take off and reapply.
Although I really like this mascara, it didn't quite give me the legnth that the Max Factor false lash effect mascara gives. It is still a good mascara though, but I won't be buying it again unless my usual one has sold out!
As some of you may have read in my Max Factor foundation review, when buying said foundation I was lucky enough to get a free gift and in amongst the products in this free gift was a sample size of the Max Factor Masterpiece Max Mascara. Last week, I noticed that my regular mascara was running out and also become clumping and horrible so, I thought it a good opportunity to make use of my free gift!
The mini Masterpiece max mascara comes in very much the same kind of packaging as the original size except that it is of course smaller, containing 5.3mls and it doesn't have the dramatic, angular, gold tip to the lid. The standard size mascara contains 7.2mls and has quite an elegant look to it thanks the the gold tip on the lid. The rest of the packaging on both is predominantly black with all writing printed in gold.
Having a browse of the Max Factor website in preparation for writing this review, I am informed that this mascara provides thick, sleek lashes with up to 400% volume but that it defines and smoothes at the same time and creates a catwalk finish in seconds thanks to its IFX brush (I'm not going to pretend to know what an IFX brush is because I have no idea). They do have a tiny bit more information about this product but I don't want to bore you with promotional product talk, but you can read more at: http://www.maxfactor.co.uk/uk/products/Eyes/Mascara/MasterpieceMax/detail.aspx
Although I love cosmetics, I'll be the first to admit that I don't know all that much about them and to me, the brush on this foundation looks pretty standard although it is thinner at the tip which gradually becomes thicker to the base.
The first time I used this mascara my eyelashes were obviously mascara free. I removed the brush from its bottle and applies several strokes to my eyelashes with the brush. I did this with both eyes and was amazed with the results!
My eyelashes, without mascara really aren't that interesting. They aren't particularly long and they aren't strikingly dark in colour and they aren't what you would call thick, luscious lashes. But this mascara really does transform them into everything they're not. My eyelashes become beautifully dark, long and volumised with minimal effort. I used to combine two mascaras, one lengthening and one volumising and still didn't manage to achieve the results I have with this Masterpiece Max mascara. I love it!
I probably wouldn't say that they were 400% volumised, but the results are still pretty amazing, maybe 200-300% and everything else that Max Factor claimed about this mascara is true. While my lashes look beautiful, full of volume and such a defining black colour and wonderfully long, there are no unsightly clumps of mascara amongst my lashes, it really does give a sleek, smooth finish and gives my lashes a beautiful curl that lasts for hours. An added bonus is that it requires very little effort and mascara to obtain these results, like I said, I probably only used a few strokes with the brush and don't need to re-dip the brush in its pot at any time during application. I love it so much, I have already been out and bought the standard size mascara, ready for when my lovely little freebie runs out.
I was also lucky enough to pick this mascara up for only £7.99 from Superdrug (usual price £9.99) as they currently had a money off offer. You can also get it from Boots for £9.99. I would recommend this mascara to anyone in the blink of a sexy, mascara'ed eye, I cannot praise it enough. Max Factor Masterpiece Max Mascara is my new favourite!
