I have to qualify this review, I'm not a big fan of volumising formula's and only bought this one because it was dirt cheap and I had a chance to try a new mascara. I have numerous lashes so volumising is kind of a wasted effort, I benefit more by lengthening formula's.
What I like about it - it isn't clumpy and you can build up the volume evenly over successive layers. Dry the mascara doesn't make the eyelashes hard and there is no twig-like or insect mimicking appearance afterwards. I got zero flakes from a full day's wear and it washed off quite easily. It's quick drying and I had no problems wth getting the mascara on my eyelid.
What I didn't like about it - it smells like PVC and I'm never a fan of being reminded about how chemically laden my mascara might be. The brush which is the rubberised nub variety seems an odd choice for this formula. One might expect a big brush instead, yet after a few layers one begins to see that all is not lost with this brush. The packaging is a bit cheap looking.
Overall this is a good mascara and if you like volumising formula's then it may even be a great mascara for you. It does build volume although only with successive coats. It provides zero length but does nicely define the lash without clumps. I only wouldn't buy it again because a lengthening formula is my cup of tea, no fault of this mascara. I like the product, I just don't love it.
Item: Max Factor Masterpiece Max Mascara
Bought from: Boots (on a 3 for 2 deal)
What made me buy this mascara?
I finally finished my Rimmell Accelerator Mascara (previously reviewed) and although I really liked it I had used this Max Factor mascara a year or more ago and could remember liking it so popped it in my basked as I was already buying max factor foundation (not yet reviewed) and they had a 3 for 2 deal on so I got 2 foundations and this mascara was the 3rd item.
Design of packaging:
This comes in a black tube with gold writing. The tube overall is black with all details written in gold. There is a gold band around the top of it and there is another gold band around the section that the wand goes in to that states "Max Factor". The Details of the product are written 'up' the tube and tells you it is "Masterpiece MAX, High Volume & Definition Mascara". As you roll the tube round it has further details to advise that it is 7.2ml in quantity and suitable for contact lens wearers. The tube overall is 13 cm long. So will fit easily in a standard makeup bag. The section of the lid that you hold is 5cm long, which when I am holding gives plenty of space for my fingers to grip it. The wand itself is 7cm long, with 2cm of that length given to the brush. The brush is made of rubbed bristle rather than a standard brush. The bristles as you look at them are mostly all the same length but taper off drastically towards the end of the brush where they are no more than a millimetre stump. The overall look of the black and gold design on the tube is non-offensive to look at but doesn't quite give off the 'expensive' look I think they were going for using black and gold.
Does it make my eyes look like a masterpiece?
Not really no. When I had used this before I remember the mascara being thicker and wetter (not runny, just moist and easier to apply) and going on to my eye lashes mush easier. For this purchase I felt that I had to try really hard and apply layer upon layer to get any decent coverage. The wand seems to slide over my eye lashes rather than grip them to apply the mascara. As the bristles are all pretty much the same length I find it hard to get on to each eye lash. The middle section can be reached easily but the inner and outer edges are much more difficult to get too. Owing to the "bald" patch at the end of the brush, so I was trying to get to the outer edges with the middle of the brush which meant that as the brush squeezed in there more mascara went on the middle section, caking it. I also noticed that as I applied each extra layer a small ball of mascara was being left on the very tip of my eye lash...quite a novel look if you want "dots" on the end of your eyelashes but not ideal and I have to keep dabbing these off with my fingertips. Aside from the brush not having a great distribution of bristles I have also found that the mascara is quite "dry" so it doesn't even come off the brush very easily. I tried to wipe the wand/brush off and start a fresh to see if it was just clogged up but when I wiped the want, not that much came off. (Also the brush is black on the one I bought, not pink like the photo but it is still the same product). So the poor application wasn't due to the brush being covered in too much mascara. The mascara itself also smells really strongly of play dough. I have looked on line and can't see any details of this product being "new and improved" since I last bought it but the brush does look different to what I remember and it certainly is not as easy to apply or gives anything near a masterpiece look.
How long does it last?
Once I finally get on a reasonable amount of mascara it dries really quickly. Sadly I don't mean that it dries and I feel confident that it is set, I mean that it dries out and becomes flaky. Every time I check my mirror another little speck has fallen on my cheek and it feels really "tight" over my eye lashes, as if it has shrunk as it dried and I feel like I am constantly rubbing the corners of my eyes. Not like an allergic reaction, just a tightness that annoys me. The colour is actually dark but you can only see that when you dab it on a tissue, rather than on your eye lashes owing to the poor distribution of the mascara.
Overall I was gutted that this wasn't the product I remember it being. I definitely would have remembered it being bad and wouldn't have tried it again. I have now put this in the bin, which is unusual for me as I would normally offer something that I didn't "like" to a friend but I felt like this product just didn't work so didn't want to pass that on to anyone else.
This will only get one star from me as that is the lowest I can give it. The packaging is just "OK" the product doesn't do what it says it will do and it was a waste of a 3 for 2 deal 
WHAT IS IT?
Mascara from Max Factor. It says it will make my lashes longer and thicker and frame my eyes better than any other mascara.
DOES IT WORK?
I think this mascara is effective, it is not expensive so I would not think that it would work as well as a designer product. The brush is very comfortable to use and it puts just the right amount of mascara on my eyelashes so that it does not clump when you are brushing your eyelashes.
It makes my eyelashes look a little bit longer and thicker also, I like that it makes my eyelashes curl up because that opens my eyes and makes them look longer.
WHAT I THINK
I am very happy with my mascara from Max Factor and I am going to buy it again because mine is going to run out soon. I have not got the full size mascara because I have 2 small ones instead that I had in free gift sets when I purchased some other Max Factor products. It is a shock that they are giving this mascara away because of it being such good quality but then I think it is a good idea for Max Factor to do that because it is a good advertisement and that is proved by me going to buy a full size one!
The colour is very dark and dramatic and I like that even when I have applied one coat only the black is dark and strong. I do not think my eyelashes look longer after one coat but when I apply a second coat this is when the length and thickness of my lashes happens and then I am very happy. The change in volume is very good and I was shocked that I could make my bottom lashes longer and more feathery because the brush of this mascara is so good, it will colour my corner eyelashes also without leaving clumps at the edges of my eyes.
The mascara is not waterproof but it is strong so that you need to use eye make up remover to take it off your eyelashes, it is very easy to remove with eye make up remover and does not leave smudges of black on my skin.
Max Factor Masterpiece Max Mascara costs about £8.99 and I think that is good value.
4 Dooyoo Stars.
Trying to find a high impact volumising mascara that doesn't leave your lashes stuck together looking very clumpy can be a challenge. Masterpiece Max Mascara can finally deliver what the advert reassures it will....
The advert states 'it will deliver bold, thick lashes with up to 400% volume* but defines and smoothes at the same time for a surprisingly, sleek effect. One swipe of its high tech IFX brush gives a chic, catwalk finish in seconds'.
I was surprised to find out the above is actually very accurate. I bought this mascare from boots for £8.99 which I think is an average price for well known brand mascaras these days. The brush was made from rubber which was completely different to anything I have seen before. I have very long eyelashes and find it particuarly hard finding a mascara that doesn't make my eyelashes look like uncontrollable spiders legs! This mascara was very easy to apply and the brush made it very easy to evenly coat without clogging up your lashes. My eyelashes were perfectly seperated with a coating of mascara that was not too thick or clumpy. This definitely made my eyes looks brighter and I didn't feel like I was wearing a lot of heavy eye make up!
I had various people ask which mascara I used over the course of the week and was very happy to recommend to everyone who asked.
The only negative thing I will mention is I did not find it delivered on the volume as it was made out to in the advert, but I honestly think it coated my lashes perfectly and I did not need much more volumising if any!
A fantastic high street priced mascara and a must have in anyones make up bag - a definite masterpiece!!!!
I was given this as a gift at Christmas 2 years ago. It came in a gift box with Max Factor lipgloss and Max Factor nail varnish.
This mascara promises to deliver bold, thick, long lashes with up to 400x more volume! and whilst doing all of this it also promises to keep your lashes looking sleek and smooth and no clumps.
The mascara comes in a little black tube with gold writing on it, to use the mascara you simply twist the top and pull up. There is 3 colours to choose from which are Black, Brown and Deep Blue. I believe there is a waterproof version of this to. The mascara is usually priced around 7-9 pound.
So on with the mascara!
My eyelashes are quite long anyway even with no mascara on, I have tried lots of mascaras before this one, none of them really made my lashes look any longer and thicker, just made them darker.
The application of the mascara is very easy, too much mascara doesn't clog up on the brush, i think this is because of the way the brush and tube is made, the excess mascara is wiped off.
The feeling of the mascara is very light, no matter how much you use, this has never smudged whilst I have used it and it looks amazing. For me the results were great, this actually lengthened my eyelashes a lot. made them very thick whilst keeping them separated, it even created a gorgeous curl in my lashes so I no longer have to use eyelash curlers! This also looks very natural
I have cried while wearing this mascara, and even though it is not waterproof, it doesn't run, stays on until you remove it (quite hard to remove if you don't have an eye make-up remover!). The mascara has lasted me 2 years, I only ran out 3 or 4 days ago, I wear mascara everyday too.
I highly recommend this product to any one who wants longer, thicker, darker and natural looking lashes :)
I've been meaning to write this review for quite a while now but haven't been able to for the bizarre reason that I couldn't actually remember what mascara I owned. This is partly down to me being forgetful but mainly due to the fact that after sitting in my makeup bag for a few months, all of the writing on the container has completely worn away leaving no sign of what was once written there. I therefore had to do a bit of sleuthing and search through my Boots.com order history to find out that the mascara that I use every day is indeed Masterpiece Max Mascara from Max Factor, and so now I can finally get around to reviewing it for you today.
I remember buying this mascara for the first time around a year ago with my friend after she had been recommended it by friends and I had read positive reviews about it on both Dooyoo and Ciao. We were both looking for mascara that would lengthen and emphasise our eyelashes without being clumpy or astronomically expensive (but then what woman isn't?). Since Masterpiece Max was advertised as ticking all these boxes and costing a pretty reasonable £9.99, we both decided to try give it a go and each bought one in black (though blue and brown were and are also available).
I was immediately quite impressed with how nice this mascara looked, which was exactly as shown in the picture above. The gold writing and detail on the lid and matching writing gave the impression of this being a fairly classy mascara rather than a cheap tacky one, which is pretty good for what is essentially a mid-priced makeup item. Unfortunately, as I mentioned earlier, almost everything on the outside of the tube has worn away by now save for the gold tip of the lid, the sticker on the top saying that this shade is 'black' and the symbol on the side saying that this should be used within 6 months of opening. Nobody really sees this mascara other than me so it doesn't really matter that it now looks a bit knackered (all of my cosmetic containers are in a similar state, if I'm honest), but if you like to proudly display your makeup products then this may be an issue to consider before purchasing this product.
Anyway: on to using the mascara itself. The mascara that I had been using prior to this was none other than Benefit Bad Gal and although I had loved it at first I found that after a while it merely blackened my lashes without giving them any definition or illusion of extra length. I was therefore hoping that Masterpiece Max would do a better job and give my lashes the added lift that I desired.
Well, I have to say that at first I was impressed. I found that my lashes were noticeably lifted up and more defined, and that despite the wand being fairly thick there weren't any real clumps. While the effect was hardly as good as using eyelash curlers, it didn't claim to be, and I found that overall it improved the appearance of my eyes and was a good mascara. I bought a replacement once my first one ran out and continued to use it both during the day and at night.
Recently, however, I haven't been quite as impressed with it. Despite the fact that I know that I haven't had it for longer than six months and so it's not 'gone bad' by being past its date, the mascara now seems to be more clumpy than normal. I've treated it the same way as any other mascara I've owned and kept it in my makeup bag and not kept it anywhere particularly hot or cold, but still it's not as good as it used to be. That's not to say that I don't still use it, because I do, as most of the time it does look pretty nice and I am happy to wear it. Occasionally though it does look a mess, so I take it off and either apply a different mascara or just try again. It normally then looks fine and I wonder what made it look clumpy earlier on but am more glad that in general it behaves itself.
In terms of removal, this mascara is fairly average. A good eye makeup remover will get rid of it quickly although you could also use face wipes to do the job, though fortunately it doesn't smudge or move much while it's on.
To better illustrate how this mascara performs I have taken a before and after photo of me wearing no mascara and then wearing Masterpiece Max, which you can see here: http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm227/charbyd/ BeforeAfterpicsmasterpiecemax.jpg (just take the space out to make it work). Please bear in mind that I am wearing NO other makeup in this photo and so am hardly looking my best but this should hopefully give you at least a vague idea of what to expect this mascara to look like on.
In conclusion, I do like this mascara despite its occasional clumpiness and will happily continue using it until this tube runs out. After that, however, I will probably try a new mascara altogether to see if there is anything better out there, as although this one isn't bad, it isn't exactly spectacular. I still prefer using it to my old mascara of choice, Benefit Bad Gal, as it gives more lash definition, but am sure that there are superior mascaras available. For the price of £9.99 it's not bad, especially as the tube does look very attractive (albeit not for very long) but in general would expect a little bit more from Masterpiece Max than what I'm getting.
I bought this product in Boots for £9.99 in the hope that as promised in the advertising, this mascara would both lengthen and emphasise my eyelashes. I chose Black but this also comes in brown and blue.
Did it deliver?
What I really like about this product is that it really defines your lashes with a good degree of colour but does not look too overdone (so if you want the false lash effect this is probably not for you). The brush is not too thick or too thin and the product did not clump at all and it was easy to reach all eyelashes for complete coverage.
What I really dislike about many types of mascara is the emphasis on unrealistic volume for which manufacturers seem to provide larger and larger brushes in the hope of persuading us that this is how we achieve it. This, in my opinion, often makes lashes look clumpy and unnatural. In this respect Max Factor are no different here with the claim of increasing the volume of lashes by up to 400%! However, their much slimmer brush allows small quantities of product to go on at a time and gives a much sleeker appearance. In order to achieve more volume, you do need to apply two or three coats.
Although this product does not give amazing volume (i.e. 400%), what it does do is make lashes instantly more defined and more natural looking without clumps, so if you want a less dramatic, more subtle look that does not cost the earth, then I would definitely recommend this product.
Thanks for reading. X

i am a big fan of this mascara, i only ever use this one. It makes your eyelashes look really thick and shiny and full. The packaging looks very sophisticated, black and gold but you can also buy it in all gold. The brush doesnt look very special but it is, trust me. The price of this product is a bit expensive but every good mascara now costs about ten pounds so it's not that bad.The mascara will last you for about 2 months i think so its not bad. I just love that it makes my lashes look really thick and long and just great. I have quite long eyelashes but straight they dont curl so this mascara makes them look really nice. I dont trust those mascaras that say they curl your eyelashes. I always stay with this one because this one is the best. My sister loves it too and only uses this one too.
Mascara is a must have make up item for me as I wear it every day. I have tried and discarded many over the years but Max Factor Mascara's always remains a staple of mine. I started off using the standard Masterpiece Mascara (comes in a gold tube) in a quest for longer and more luscious lashes. Although this did a good job of lengthening my lashes when Max Factor released the Masterpiece Max Mascara (comes in a blue tube) I was lured by the promise of a high impact look that could give my lashes extra volume (apparently up to 400%) and make them look bold. I chose the black version, as I have dark eyelashes and hair anyway and find this colour compliments my look the best. The black colour may be too dark or intense for some but the mascara comes in two other shades: - black-brown and a deep blue.
The mascara goes on to the lashes with ease and I find the flexible IFX brush easy to use and good at reaching all of the lashes from root to tip. It's also good at keeping all of the lashes separate and flexible as opposed to joining them up, like a lot of other volumising mascaras do. One of things I like about this mascara is that its consistency is quite thick so it feels substantial when applying to the lashes. Though it's not necessary, I like to layer my lashes with lots of mascara and another good thing about this mascara is that you can do this without it clumping. It has great staying power as well, lasting all day and night without flaking or looking tired. When it's time for it to come off it does so fine with some eye make up remover.
Boots are selling a 7.2 ml tube for £9.99, so this would probably be classed as a mid range priced mascara. Amazon has it on special offer at the moment for £8.25 with free super saver delivery. I often try and get it when it is on special offer in Boots, Superdrug or Tesco so sometimes I can get it for around the £7-8 mark.
Overall, I feel the Max Factor Masterpiece Max Mascara is their best yet and I feel the best mascara available out there. For me, it beats more expensive ones such as Benefit Bad Gal and Diorshow Black Out.
I am always chopping and changing my mascara, I am not the most brand loyal and as I have not yet found the holy grail of mascaras - the one!
Never mind, my search recently continued when I purchased Max Factor's Masterpiece Max High Volume and Definition Mascara. It came in a black tube with gold writing and edging with 7.2ml contents. I chose on this occasion the colour black.
On first impressions it had a good brush, which they claim to be an IFX brush, not exactly sure what that means, but to me the brush is effective and coats the lashes well, giving me an eye popping defined look. You can see each of the lashes seperately rather than any clumps and can definitely notice a difference. Seemingly this is the official mascara of the Milan Fashion Week so I am in good company.
Max Factor claims that the mascara delivers bold thick lashes with up to 400% volume, again not entirely sure what that means or how it is measured but it sounds good doesn't it!
The mascara is available in three colours - black, brown black and deep blue and costs £9.99 in Boots.
Now the question is Can I Stop Looking for the Perfect Mascara?
The answer is NO, while I have found an excellent mascara that really does define my lashes and makes them stand out, after several hours of wearing small flakes of black mascara appeared under my eyes, which is not quite what I was looking for. If they could only get this small but crucial point sorted this would be the one.
But while the mascara is good my search continues!
Having read many reviews on 'Masterpiece Max mascara' and the majority of them being positive, it has to be said, that i really don't understand why. Having bought this product twice, as i was so disappointed in it, i was convinced that mine was 'faulty' - sadly, it wasn't, so there's £20+ gone that i'll never get back.
Don't get me wrong, it's not awful, it's just very....average. It nicely seperates the lashes, like any good mascara should - but that was it. The colour seems to be somewhat weak and a couple of coats still didn't seem to be enough. I didn't find it to have a particularly dramatic effect at all, in fact it was very subtle, too subtle. It didn't really add any length to my lashes, lift them or make them stand out any more than any other mascara. I've used quite a few mascara's in my search for the perfect one - some cheaper - and the majority stomp all over this.
If your wanting a subtle look then i would recommend this, but if you want your mascara to give your eyes impact, then frankly, i would avoid it. The best mascara i have come across and now use religiously, is Urban Decay's 'Skyscraper multi-benefit mascara', that stuff is amazing!
My faith in max-factor products is slowly dying, after having used quite a few of their products recently, mainly all with disappointing results. As i said, they aren't awful, they just certainly don't warrant the price or live up to the hype.
Today I bought Max Factor Masterpiece mascara and pleased with the results. It makes the eyelashes appear fuller and longer. Normally I spend very little on make up so I was nervous about the results. After trying it on I can say that I am really pleased with the results. It doesn't clump the eyelashes together and really defines them.
I am pleased with this product and agree that its worth spending a little more for better quality make up.
Tips I find useful when putting mascara on:
1. For fuller looking lashes: Ever so slightly zig-zag the the bush along the lashes from the bottom of the eyelashes right through to the ends.
2. For longer looking lashes: slowly bush the mascara through the lash and when reaching the ends pause pushing the lash upwards. It does the same job as the torturous eyelash curling device on the market. I have nearly taken my eyes out a few times with them things.
Max factor Masterpiece works well and boosts my confidence at least. Its not always about the make - up its how you use it as well.
I have tried nearly all the mascaras around and spent a small fortune!! All of them claiming various results such as Volume, Length and definition.
I nearly gave up hope of a great mascara until I came across this product. I first purchased it about 2 years ago in Boots for around £12.99. I was amazed that it did exactly what it said, unlike most other brands and items that are a real disappointment.
The product is from Max Factor, one of the leading make up brands.
The full discrition is:
High volume and definition mascara
High volume thats sleek and smooth
**Suitable for contact lens wearers**
It comes in a 7.2ml tube that costs around £9.99 in various stores. As max fatcor is a top brand , you can find it almost everywhere.
The texture is quite smooth and goes on very well with a lot of ease. There are no clumps and you can build it up to suit your preference.
I think the secret to this mascara is the wand used, it feels almost rubbery and seperates lashes brilliantly.
I would definately reccommend this product to anyone!!
It really works!!
As a serious make up junkie, the right mascara is an absolute essential buy!! I have lots (used once and thrown to the back of the drawer!), this one I used, finished and bought again, a first for me! Masterpiece max is a real treat in mascara terms, it plumps, lengthens and stays put all day long. It doesn't smudge or flake and it really does define every lash, you can layer it on without all that messy clumping or the dreaded spiders leg look.
I use the black version which is highly pigmented and makes eyes look wide awake. I used extra lashings for a night out with full smoky eye makeup but it was also fab for day wear, I've lost count of the comments I've had and recommendations I've made for this little tube of genius! This is a real desert island purchase, I'll never use another mascara again!
I would have to say that this is just about one of the best mascaras I have ever used. Having short, stubby eyelashes that are near enough impossible to curl I have a lot of trouble finding mascara that actually makes a difference to my eyelashes. But I think with Masterpiece Max I have found the one!
You can either buy black or black/brown coloured. I go for black/brown although I can't see much of a difference between the two. This mascara gives my eyelashes a lot of volume, which i desperately need and is completely free from clumps. It distributes equally over the lashes and i find that it is easy to alternate between feathery or more heavy lashes, depending on how much you apply.
I personally really like thick lashes so this product is perfect for me. However, even if you are not applying to much of the mascara, it still appears to look like you have put a lot on. So if you are one of the people who aren't to keen on very thick, striking lashes then this mascara is probably not for you.
The only problem I really ever have with it is how quickly it gets used up. I'd say that mine normally lasts about 3 weeks maybe. To me that isn't all that long. It's quite annoying having to keep buying a new one so often, especially as it's a bit expensive.
I bought mine from boots at £9.99 and have not found anything cheaper. It is a bit pricey, but I think it is completely worth the cost as it's a great product.
Achieve beautifully framed eyes / This mascara creates bold, thick lashes with a surprisingly, sleek effect / One swipe of its high tech brush gives you a finished look /
