For me, finding a perfect mascara is like trying to find the Holy Grail - it's just impossible. I always think it's going to happen one day; I'll find that special one that will give me thick, long, fluttery, perfectly defined eyelashes for only a fiver, but it never does. So, in the meantime, I've tried absolutely loads of different mascaras with varying results. The waterproof Maxfactor Masterpiece mascara is the closes thing I've found so far to the 'perfect' mascara.
At ten pounds a pop, the price may be a little bit expensive for a cheapo student like myself, but being Maxfactor and a well respected brand, I find myself willing to pay a bit more for a product that I'm sure will be of a good quality. I really like the head of the mascara brush. I always get put off by mascara brush heads that are really big with really bushy, thick bristles, because I can never get them close enough to my eye to actually coat my eyelashes! But this brush has a medium shaped head, and instead of 'bristles' has small plastic 'spikes' that are not spaced too close together. This means that when I apply the mascara to my eyes (depending on how careful I am!) it really gives good definition, and my lashes rarely clump together. Fantastic! Also, the little spikes on the end of the brush are really small, and can get right into the corner of your eyes, meaning that every single lash gets coated.
The actual mascara itself is a nice consistency, and it perfect for daytime wear. If you wanted something really black, for a more dramatic look, then I'd suggest going for the Maxfactor Masterpiece Max version, but this one is fine for me! (you can always add another layer, although I always find that applying another layer makes it go clumpy and too thick) I always find that it lasts pretty much all day, without flaking or rubbing off, which is great as well.
Now, the reason I buy the waterproof version is because I have pretty bad hayfever, so in the summer I am constantly rubbing my eyes and making them water. But don't worry, because when Maxfactor says that this mascara is waterproof, they really mean it. I've been out in the sun, rain, I've even been swimming in it, and it doesn't run. BUT this does lead to its biggest problem: it is such a nightmare to get off! It sticks to your lashes like absolute glue! It's so incredibly hard to get off, that I can waste two or three make-up wipes getting it off, and then when I wake up in the morning, it's STILL on my lashes! But I suppose that you can't have a really great waterproof mascara that comes off easily, that would be besides the point!
So there you have it. A 'nearly- perfect', perfect mascara.
I first went on a major mission to find the perfect mascara when I was getting married. I didn't want to wear full false lashes, as I wanted to achieve a natural look, but I had struggled for years to find a mascara that would give me the length I desired...without all the clumps!
I personally found volume mascaras were a 'no go' for me. By the time I had run the wand the length of my lashes, trying to draw out the length as much as possible, they had already caused major clumping. This only increased, the more I tried to get of the clumps...Arrgh!
I was recently introduced to MaxFactor waterproof masterpiece mascara and I assure you, I will not be looking back. This mascara boasts great length, without the clumps, and it really does thoroughly deliver. The wand has tiny rubber bristles at the end, so unlike a lot of brush wands, it doesn't get clumped on the bristles themselves. I have always found this one of the main reasons other mascaras instantly leave blobs on your lashes.
I was also once told that if you're curling your lashes before applying mascara, you should always use waterproof mascara. This is apparently because the formula in non-waterproof mascaras works against the curling action, effectively undoing your efforts. And I have to say, after also trying the non-waterproof MaxFactor masterpiece mascara; I really did notice far better effects using the waterproof version, as I always curl my lashes first. You just need to make sure you have a good quality waterproof make-up remover, as once it's on, it won't be budging! I have even been swimming in this mascara and I found it had amazing, streak free results.
But above all, I have the lengthy lashes that I required. They are beautifully separated and I find that as the wand is so narrow, I can really get into my outer corner lashes, to give them that flicked out, fluttery effect. As with all mascaras, there is a 6 month expiry date on it, once it has been opened. But the product definitely remains at the great standard of quality, until the end. I have tried this product in Black as well as Black/Brown and I didn't find it harsh at all, as it is such a fine, delicate mascara, with such a precise finish. So the colour preference is really down to you. The Product is available for £8.99 at Boots, and if you have an advantage card, will earn you 32 points. Whereas it is £9.99 at superdrug and will only earn you 9 points.
I do not really wear a lot of makeup but one thing that I always wear is mascara I have a strange obsession with them and have many tubes of mascara sitting in my make up bag I just cannot help myself when there is a new mascara released promising the world.
I was rather impressed the head of the mascara brush was not too large and this always worries me as I am really clumsy and often end up with big black smudges yet at the same time it was a good enough size to coat my lashes in a few strokes so I am not there all day applying the product. The small plastic spikes are what makes this mascara different and they do seem to work really well. They are separated well meaning each one can get between your lashes and really separate them making it easy to apply the mascara without it clumping and this also helps in adding the length and volume I was after.
The mascara has a nice thick base to it meaning once you unscrew the mascara lid and remove the wand you can hold the end of the wand with ease and it is rather comfy making it easier to apply. The consistency of the mascara is neither runny nor too thick and I found I did not need to scrape off any excess before using the wand there was just the right amount on the head of the wand to begin to apply it.
Well as the brush is a good size I can just add one coat to my lashes to create the look that I want for the day time and I find that the small plastic spikes really help pull my lashes apart while coating them from base to the end of the lash making them appear longer and really adding volume to them. The small spikes mean it can easily reach to the corner of your lashes and help lift them out which adds to the creation of volume without smudging even with my clumsy hands.
If you are looking for a fuller and more dramatic look all you need to do is add a second coat of the mascara and it adds more of the product but evenly so you still have sleek lashes with no clumping or flaking. I find I can add a second coat of this on top of the first in the evening to create a more defined look for the evening without the need to completely remove the mascara and start over.
I do find it very easy to apply and it does create a fantastic full lash look for both night and day depending on how much product I use. It lasts all day without flaking or smudging which I think is great considering the amount of running about I have to do through the day. It also states on the packaging it is suitable for contact lenses users which I cannot comment on as I do not wear them but I have never had any problem with irritation from this product.
Results and waterproof test
Well I did find this product to create great volume to your lashes but without any spider leg looks no clumping and not too false looking just an eye catching definition that lasts all day. I mainly use this for day to day use and I can safely say when I have been caught in rain showers it has fared well with no panda eyes appearing. I did however find when I took my children swimming that despite me trying to keep my head fairly dry I came out looking like I had been in a boxing match the mascara had run but it leaves a light mark meaning it looks like huge bags under your eyes rather than mascara which is a bit of a letdown.
And at the end of a long hard day?
I do find that the mascara tends to still be visible at the end of the day even after all the running around I do my eyes still look defined and you can see there is still mascara visible. There is no flaking and although the result is not as obvious and when I first applied it you can still see a different. As it lasts so well I was a little worried it would be difficult to take off before bed but most of it came away fairly easily to get the last traces of your lashes can be a little more difficult and takes a little more time but for the staying power this product has removing it is not too hard.
This mascara retails at around the £10 mark which compared to some I have owned is actually rather reasonable and it does a fantastic job. As it lasts all day I find it is better value to purchase this at a slightly higher cost than some cheaper ones that last nowhere near as long. It comes in both black and black/ brown so it you prefer a lighter look you can purchase it in the lighter shade but it is still dark enough to really define your eyes well. It is waterproof to protect me from having mascara running down my face in typical Scottish weather however anything more than a shower of rain it does fail on that claim.
This mascara promises 400 % more volume and although it really does give your lashes a great result I do not feel it lives up to this promise although it is a really good mascara and one of my favourites I always swap and change between my mascaras but this is in the top of my make up bag and one I use very frequently so I would recommend this to you.
i LOVE this mascara. my absolute fave. nothing get's your eyelashes as long as this - and without looking clumpy, as many other bigger mascaras do. i alternate between this and maxfactor false lash mascara, but i always go back to this :) it really is waterproof too - great if you're watching a sad film on a date haha:) i'd say its quite steep at around £10 in boots, but most mascara are this much, and if you wait for 2 for 3 offers or use boots advantage points its really fine:) i'd say this lasts max. 3 months before it goes clumpy, like any mascara, providing it's used on an everyday basis. this is great too for the bottom lashes - as i find with the thicker mascaras, with bigger brushes, when put on lower lashes, it looks ridiculous - but this looks good :) it's sooo popular with other teens (i'm 17) so it can't be bad..i've converted my 44 year old mum too :)
Perfect for day to night. I wear this almost every day as I often go straight out socialising after a day in the office. Keeps me from looking tired as it doesn't wear off.
When applying it, be sure to be careful as if you accidentally get some on your skin it doesn't wipe off as easily as non-waterproof mascarra will. As a mascara it's pretty standard coverage - not clumpy or lumpy and gives an even coverage. I woudn't say it was particularly lengthening or thickening for my lashes - the main benefit of it is definately the length of time it will stay looking like you've just put it on.
Also great for at the gym as the sweat doesn't make it run! To remove I use a make up wipe and it comes off quite easily. Have also used a specific eye make up remover which works equally well
I think maxfactor usually offers good quality products, and I do agree that this is definitley seen in these mascaras. The, masterpiece range has been the best so far that they have offered.
This type is quite a few years old now, as I remember buying it for around £12, but now it retails between £6-£8, which isnt bad at all.
The product --> This mascare comes in a lovely, professional looking gold case, with a blue srip on to indicate that it is waterproof. It looks a very luxurious product, which is one of the reasons I brought it. It is only 4ml, but this is a typical size of mascaras - and I still finds it lasts about 4-5 months before it goes a bit clumpy. This colour comes in jet black. The brush has good separation for lashes, and again looks of high quality.
It claims to offer outstanding lashes, and it does do this to an extent (they don't look false) but they do look good, plus they do look big. I find that it lasts for a day, but I would reapply it for the night time. It delivers superb definition to lashes, partly because the brush isn't too thick, but in fact quite thin. This is why it doesn't tend to clump together too. There is another model of this available, and this is the non-waterproof version. However, having tested them both there really isn't a difference between the standard of them.
I do think this collection of mascaras from Maxfactor is outstanding, and worth the money!
I bought this mascara a few years ago and paid about £8 for it which is about average for a decent mascara.
It comes in a gold tube with a blue band around it which shows it is the waterproof version. The colour of the tube is what really appealed to me because it looks different and more glamorous than other mascaras and it really caught my eye in the shop. I also like it because it is easier to find in my make up bag than a black mascara tube.
The brush is really good on this mascara as it is quite fine and so I find it really accentuates each individual lash and gets into the corners really well for a more open eyed look.
I have it in black but I think it also comes in a brown. It is a nice wetness which is not too wet but not too dry and doesn't make my lashes flake and dry out even after I have applied a couple of layers. It is a versatile mascara because it is good for day wear with just one coat but if I apply several coats it gives a more dramatic glamorous look and makes my lashes look thicker and longer.
I have worn this mascara during rain and it has never run down my face and never smudges under my eyes even at the end of a long day. It lasts all day with no need to reapply it and so one tube lasted me ages so is good value for money.
I would definately recommend this mascara. It is a classic mascara without a gimmick but it genuinely works really well.
Being that I'm a person that suffers with bad hayfever and sensitive eyes, I have to be careful what mascara I wear as some can make it a lot worse. I have to choose a waterproof one as I would end up looking like a panda most days if not.
Over the years I have tried many different makes and designs and whittled it down to liking Benefits Bad Girl Waterproof, which I have been wearing for some time now, so knowing that I was getting low I wondered into the local towns Boots to have a browse at the Benefits Counter.
Well talk about being harrassed, I was almost pushed into a chair and having my make-up wiped off for a "New Product", so after having to fight the woman off, I decided there was no way I would be purchasing anything from her company, luckily Max Factor was the next counter and just to pee the woman off I wondered onto this counter.
Now this assistant could not have been further away from the other one, and when I asked her about what mascara to choose from, I thought she would try and sell me the newest one out that was over £10, but no she gave me a good look over and decided on selling me this Max Factor Masterpiece in waterproof for £8.90.
Apparently the two that I was looking at were suitable for people with long lashes or thick lashes and as I didn't fit into either group she suggested this one which actually thickens and lengthens the lashes.
Coming in a flashy gold tube you can see straight away that it is the waterproof one as it has a blue band around the centre of the tube, compared to the other one which is just all gold. Holding 4.5ml it isn't the biggest amount around, as I know that the likes of No.7 hold 7ml. So this can work out a bit more expensive than some others, but mine seems to be lasting for ages!.
It isn't any smaller than any other mascara about so I took it, that the brush must be quite big. On unscrewing and pulling it out I discover it is the same size as most of the other brushes I have used in the past. The brush is a fairly thick bristle brush which tapers thinner towards the end.
It is a very black colour and is a joy to put on your lashes as it does not go clumpy or leave little fibres on your lashes that can irritate. I find that I can cover my lashes top and bottom in one go, although I usually give them a second coat.
My lashes also stay natural looking without going all hard ( like I've experienced in the past with some mascaras!) and looking like spiders legs. It gives a really even cover and thickens and lengthens the lashes lovely.
I've had no running eyes at all and even when I've had a bad attack of hayfever the mascara stays fully intact. The other night after having a shower and washing my hair, when I got out of the bath and looked into the mirror my make-up is in tact!.
So I'm glad the Benefits woman chased me away as I've found a truly brilliant mascara which I will continue to use forever!
The Max Factor representative was really helpful and patient in explaining all the different mascaras to me and really opened my eyes (literally!) to how you must choose the right mascara for your lashes!
A really well deserved 5 Dooyoo stars!.
