Max Factor Second Skin Foundation
Advantages: Really lovely foundation that looks more subtle than any I've tried whilst offering good coverage
Disadvantages: No SPF
The last time I reviewed a foundation was the first time I had tried one from Max Factor - and I was impressed! It had a SPF level, it was a foundation / serum combination product and I was massively pleased with it and enjoyed using it. However, I bought it towards the end of Autumn and, as it started to run out recently (I wear make up every day as I'm hugely underconfident about my appearance), I was suddenly a bit conscious that, after a winter of no sun, I might be a bit too pale for it - and I had already bought the most fair shade Max Factor produced the foundation in.
So, as I was so impressed with the way this product worked throughout my longest working days, I found myself at the Max Factor stand in Boots and I decided to do a little 'back of the hand' skin test with a few other products. One of them was the Second Skin foundation, which I rubbed onto the back of my hand next to another patch test of my existing foundation. I went off for a wander around the store and ten minutes later had a look at how they compared - and after that, there was only one product I was buying.
***MAX FACTOR SECOND SKIN***
This product costs £12.99, although I bought it as part of a 3-for-2 offer across the range (one of which will be getting rave review treatment very soon!).
It comes in a glass bottle with a black dispenser visible through a lightly blacked-out plastic clip-down lid. There is a label with black writing on gold which features MF's cross-shaped logo, through which you can see the product - you can clearly see how much of this you have used.
The product boasts "multi-tonal pigments" and claims to provide virtually undetectable coverage - hence the name. It "synchronises with the skin for a look of natural perfection" - blimey. Surely it can't deliver on that? Yet I was so impressed with the combination of coverage and subtlety in my in-store skin test that I had to try it. I chose Creamy Ivory, the lightest shade.
***IS IT ANY GOOD?***
Yes! I really like this foundation.
First of all, let's be realistic here. No foundation is flawless. There is no one product that all women of a similar skin tone can slap on and instantly look like Scarlett or Naomi or Angelina. It just isn't scientifically possible. Equally, you can't expect a product that claims to blend as naturally as is possible for a foundation to match your skin tone if you decide to be deliberately obtuse and select the darkest shade they market when you have the skin tones of Snow White - there are limits. But, if you have selected the closest shade to your skin tone then I think this product does astonishingly well and is very subtle - yet this doesn't compromise its coverage. It is, therefore for me at least, a very strong high street foundation.
First of all, I apply this after priming my skin with a wash in the shower and then moisturiser. My problems are: shiny T-zone, a worry about the forming of fine lines around my eye area, and long days commuting and working which require a long-lasting foundation. Throw in my deep-seated personal insecurities, and you also need a foundation that hides every flaw, imagined or noticeable. I insist on an SPF moisturiser and a foundation that doesn't combine with this to cause shine breakouts.
Does this work for me? Good lord yes. First of all, yes you can tell you're wearing make-up. But a lot less than any other foundation I've ever used. It is really subtle and does work well with your natural skin tones. I'm so pale that you can see very obviously if I've slapped on something that is the wrong tone for me, and even the ones that are the right tone are often noticeable at the time of spring, when you've hardly had any sun and look as pale as you ever will.
This foundation is dispensed well by a sturdy mechanism that has never threatened to fail. When on your fingertips, you can hold your hand upside down and it won't drip, but it is not 'claggy' and heavy on the skin. It applies smoothly and soothingly, quite cool from the glass bottle, and blends well. I always finish my foundation with a powder because I know I'll be out on the move for hours but this finishes nicely on its own, leaving my skin looking smooth, even and healthy.
Also, my long day; this lasts. Even better, my T-Zone shine is significantly reduced by this product - I can get away with the occasional dust from a compact to look flawless but I now have the security of knowing that, unless I've been in a very hot room for a significant amount of time, I will not look like someone has wiped my face with olive oil. Result! And it does this without drying my skin at all.
I can't rate this highly enough - it just suits me down to the ground, making me feel secure and confident when in meetings and social situations when before I would be worrying whether or not I looked terrible and desperate to escape to a mirror to sort the problem out. For once I don't feel the need to carry my foundation around with me because I know that the initial application is on my side and doing its job - brilliant.
Also - for all £12.99 is never too much if you have a product that really does what you need it to, I have to say this is lasting astonishingly well.
My only gripe - and I can't mark this down because of it because for all I know, to include it may well scientifically reduce the attributes for which I have just praised it so highly - this product doesn't have SPF coverage. But then, few high street foundations do and the fact that this one's sister product did was a benefit rather than an expectation.
In conclusion, I love this. I rate it highly and whilst I recognise that every woman's skin has a different combination of requirements, I hope it works out for you as well as it has for me. I like to switch products and try new things but for me this will definitely be a re-buy, even at full whack.
Summary: Love this product and will use again without doubt
