Advantages: Like a balm bath for your lips
Disadvantages: hmmm - still thinking
I'm a sucker for the special offers in the supermarket or Boots so when I saw this Lip Gloss a few years back with the promise of 250 extra advantage points in Boots, the display was immediately ransacked.
The advertising for this particular lip gloss featured heavily with the release of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason at the cinema. I have to say this had no influence over me buying the product.
I rifled through the range of colours, opening the testers and trying on the back of my hand. I admired the look of 3 of them before deciding on which one to buy. I eventually plumped for the Luscious Lavender.
Packaging
The gloss is in a standard tube with a gold top. The tube is essentially the colour of the gloss. It has the familiar Max Factor logo on the top of the tube along with the product name. Each of the tubes comes in a cellophane wrapper, with the standard perforation down the side to prevent tampering.
It has a blurb beneath the product name - obviously the marketing slogan. I quote 'High-beam shine and lip balm feel'.
Application
The top of the gloss unscrews and when you pull out the wand it is a standard foam tip. I was quite disappointed when I first opened it because there didn't seem to be much gloss on the tip of the wand and with previous glosses I have owned there was more.
The first thing that struck me was the smell. It's a sweetish cosmetic smell, not overpowering or offputting at all but a very pleasant aroma. In fact it reminded me of a violet kind of smell.
Eager to try it I pulled out my mirror and went to work with the wand. The gloss slid onto my lips smoothly and gave instant sheen with a hint of colour. It did look effective.
This was just a tester at work so I didn't take much notice of whether it had staying power or not. I had really wanted the gloss to go over another, paler lipstick pencil for when I went out in the evening.
I firstly applied my base and then lip liner in a slightly darker shade. Then I applied my lipstick pencil, finally finishing off with the Max Factor Silk Gloss. What a difference. It covered my lips with a lovely sheen, perfectly blending with the lighter pink beneath and toning well with my antique rose lip liner. The gloss didn't feel sticky at all.
What I thought of the gloss
Boy did it have staying power. I went out in the evening for drinks and dinner with friends and only had to reapply once the whole time I was out. My lips, even when I wear this gloss over lipstick, feel instantly moisturised. It literally feels just like I am wearing my lip balm but I have the added advantage of having a hint of colour.
I have had this gloss for several years now and use it most days for everyday wear and over another lipstick for more glam occasions. The gloss itself has retained colour, smell and consistency - not dried up at all!
I paid £4.95 for this gloss but then also got £2.50 back on my advantage card with Boots so for that price this has been an absolute bargain buy. I have to say though that when (or should that be if??) I ever run out then I will buy this again.
