I was looking for something a little different from my usual lipstick or lip gloss when I came across Maybelline colour sensational lip stain. I have seen these type of pens before but never actually got around to trying one for some reason.
In Boots where I bought mine there were a few other makes and variations but I decided to go with Maybelline as it was a reasonable price and seemed to have the colours I liked.
The lip stain comes in a plastic tube much like a chunky marker pen which is colour coded to the choice of colour you make. A useful idea that I like as at least you can see at a quick glance which one is which without taking lids of or reading labels. Around the middle is a silver effect sticker which has the product information on it from Maybelline, this gives you limited information such as the fact it lasts for 12 months and the colour with it's corresponding code. On the pull off lid which is a secure fit, so no leaky lip stain in your bag, there is a small peel away sticker giving you the ingredients list, also comes with the bar code should any app people out there want to see how much it costs elsewhere.
***USING IT AND MY THOUGHTS***
Using the lip stain is fairly simple, it is just like a marker pen to be honest, the tip is pointed to the end allowing you to define the out line of your lips easily, however due to the size of the marker pen size it is not for precision application. Basically you just colour in the rest of your lips. Should you make a mistake it comes off better with a small amount of makeup remover I find so not quite as easy to remove as a lipstick.
So what do I think......The marker pen idea I love, so simple not going to squish or melt in you bag like a lipstick and they have a nice fruity smell too.
However, to use I also find it like a marker pen in that when applying I find I am always stopping and shaking it to colour my lips in as the stain seems to run away from the tip back into the pen.
The colour does last for a good few hours, but another downside is that it is very drying on your lips. There is no moisture at all and I find myself continually licking my lips. I suppose you could put a clear lip gloss over the top but for me that would defeat the object of why I bought it.
With regards to colours I chose two 350 Blushing which is a deep pink, very nice covers well, but the other colour I bought 150 Tender Rose is a pale pink and I can hardly notice it unfortunately there was no tester for this one so I bought it on chance.
There are only a few colour choices that I have seen available, about 6, which are pinks and browns.
Found in stores such as Boots, larger supermarkets that stock Maybelline and online makeup sties and Amazon etc.
Each 14gram lip stain costs around £5.99
Would I buy again? Probably not - only because of the drying effect on my lips.
Review maybe posted on ciao and dooyoo under the same username J
I really like wearing lip colour but I'm not a big fan of lipsticks, i'd rather stick with lipgloss or tinted lip balm because I feel like they're easier to apply and when I've had a few drinks they're less likely to end up on my chin! :P I decided to give the maybelline lip stain a try because I wanted a bolder colour that would last longer and would be suitable for a night out.
I chose colour 480 'Shy Red' which is a deep rosy pink. The first thing I should point out about the lip stains is that they are not like lipsticks or glosses at all, they dont use a brush, wand or stick to apply but instead when you pop the cap off they look almost exactly like a felt tip pen! This takes a little getting used to but if you practise a few times you'll get the hang of it and be able to use the pen no bother. The pen tip is much better than a lipstick because you can be more precise in your application of the colour, using both the side of the nib and the tip.
Another noticeable feature of the colour sensational stains is the scent, each pen is berry scented and smells lovely! Not too sweet or sickly and there isn't really a flavour from the stain.
The colour is good too, the colour I've picked is quite strong and bright and there are a good few other colours in the range in varying shades. Another good feature of the pen is that it allows you to build up your colour so you can have a hint which is more natural or several layers which will be bolder and more obvious.
And finally, the length of time it lasts. I was really surprised and impressed by how well this colour lasts. I tested it out one evening and woke up the next morning with it still on. It lasts well on a night out and looks lovely with a slick of clear gloss on top. It will stay on for a good four hours without reapplication but if you're going for a meal you'll probably need to reapply it after as it does fade a little when eating.
Of course there are a few downsides. Firstly, the packaging looks great but it's impossible to see how much stain you have left as the label isn't see through. Also, if you have dry or cracked lips the colour gathers in the cracks making them much more noticeable. You can overcome this though by putting vaseline or lip balm on before applying the colour.
So overall I'd definitely recommend buying one of these and trying them out. I wear mine all the time now :)
Tip: To see what the colour will look like on, apply a little to the tip of the finger near the nail. This will give you an idea of how the colour will appear on your lips.
I have previously mentioned in my reviews that I am a big fan of the maybelline make up range, and I have always been impressed with the range and quality of their products, which are usually reasonably priced for a high street brand of makeup, especially when on offer! Recently, after needing some new makeup, Boots were offering 3 for 2 on their maybelline range, and after picking up a couple of things I was out of, I needed a third item, which was when I noticed this Maybelline Colour Sensational Lipstain, a product I have previously never noticed before.
Now, I usually don't buy a lot of lipsticks or gloss products as my lips seem to get irritated easily, and so I have to be very careful what I put on them, but since i was technically getting the product for free, and I was confident of the quality of the product, I thought I would give it a go. This lipstain comes in the shape of a felt tip pen, and in fact when you remove the lid, which is a pull lid, rather than a screw top lid, (again resembling a felt tip pen), the nib of the product is the same shape and material you would expect fropm a child's colouring pen, which I found a little strange when I went to apply it to my lips.
This lipstain currently comes in three main shades - Tender Rose, Blushing and Shy Red, well I say three because that is the choice that Boots currently seem to offer, although after looking the Maybelline website, there appears to be up to 10 colours to choose from, which you may be able to get hold of in bigger stores. I chose the Tender Rose, as I felt it was the lightest of the three and most resembled a natural colour for my lips. I am not one to wear bright red lip colour, always opting for the natural look.
Maybelline isn't the cheapest make up brand in the shops, and this lipstain currently costs £5.99 in Boots, which is fine when you are getting a 3 for 2 offer, like I did. Maybelline claim that this product wil product that touch of colour that will last the whole day, and give a subtle look to your lips.
After getting this product, I obviously was keen to try it out for myself. If you go by the colour on the lid of the product, which I presume is meant to reflect the colour of the lipstain, you will be a bit disappointed, as it is rather darker than the lid gives the impression of. As I said earlier, when you apply this product to your lips, it is like you are drawing on your lips with a child's felt tip pen, and is a rather strange feeling. However, on a plus note, because it feels like you are are drawing, it is actually easy to apply to your lips, and you feel that you are giving them a good coverage and reaching those little inner parts that are harder to reach without making a mess. When the colour was applied, even though it was darker than the lid suggests, I was happy with the colour, and I thought it resembled the vaseline pink colour on my lips. This is were the good points end however. After having it on my lips for all of 5 minutes, I could feel my lips dry, as if all the moisture had been sucked out of them. Within about half an hour of applying the product, I looked in the mirror, and there wasn't any remnant of this lipstain on my lips, and yet that is without me eating or drinking, or giving it any excuse to disappear. A couple of days later, I applied the product again. I got the same drying feeling not long after but this time I decided to apply some vaseline over the top of the product to see if it would last any longer. Again, the colour disappeared.
Of all the maybelline products that I have tried, and most of which I buy again and again, this is certainly not one of them. In fact it is the most disappointing maybelline product I have ever tried. For £5.99 for providing approx 5 minutes of colour, that is a ridiculous price, and not reflective of the usual quality I expect from the brand. There is no reason for the product to disappear off your lips within half an hour, without you even touching or putting anything to your lips. Quite frankly it just does not last as a lip colour, despite me putting vaseline over the top as well. The only positive of the whole product is that it is easy to apply to your lips, and that is where anything remotely positive ends. I certainly could not recommend this product, and in this case I am only glad that I got it free as part of the offer, otherwise I would be very unhappy after spending £5.99 on what can only be described as being 'useless'.
I am not really a fan of lipstick, I will wear it on a night out, but I mainly feel stupid wearing it, it doesn't suit me. So I tend to stick to lip glosses, but I have noticed that lip gloss does get boring after a while. And as I brought a gorgeous new going out dress, I wanted to have a nice new lip colour product to wear with it, as I was thinking a light red, and I saw a new Maybelline lip colour, the Colour Sensational, which looked really different (it was a lip pen) and had some really nice colours, and could be easier for me to wear then lipstick.
The product is a pen, which has a pull on cap, which is quite tightly secured on, and can be difficult to pull off. The body of the pen is covered in silver, with the top of the pen being the shade of lip stain, which makes it much easier to choose the shade you want. On the pen there is not a lot of information about the product, just that it is a "lip stain - fresh colour". The product is exactly like a felt tip pen, it has a thin pointed top, with thicker sides. The Colour Sensational Lip Stain is currently available in 3 shades, Tender Rose (light pink) Blushing (bright red) and Shy Red (lighter red), although there are a lot more shades in America, there may be more shades being released. I am currently reviewing the Shy Red colour.
The first thing I noticed about the product was the smell, which was actually surprising as I assumed their would be no scent to the product, like other lip products. But the Colour Sensational has a distinct scent of berries, like mixed berries, which is quite sweet and fruity, and I like it, but it can be abit sickly. The Lip Stain colour also tastes of berries when you first apply, so try not to lick! The smell does fade after a while. I would prefer the lip stain to have no scent, it is slightly off putting really.
To apply the colour, it is pretty easy but completely different from any other lip colour product I've used before. The colour best suits clean and healthy lips, I wouldn't apply to sore or chapped lips, as the colour might make the condition of the lips worse. The basic applying method, is to just colour in your lips, yes just colour in the lines! The application is pretty easy, it is easy to get a really nice, even coverage of the colour, but I found it harder to get an even line of colour, especially on the corners of my lips. The sides of the pen is perfect to get the colour to the thicker areas of the lips, and the tip is great for getting a around the lips. The product is wet on lips, but dries almost immediately, which is a great bonus for a quick colour boost of the lips.
The colour was completely different to what the colour was meant to be, the colour was more pink then I wanted it. I was hoping it was a light red, but it looked more like a hot pink, with hints of the red. Although I was still happy with the colour, just not what I would have chosen to wear necessarily. The colour was quite not to bright, and was quite subtle, but it was still obvious I had lip colour on, it just wasn't so in your face colour, as some lip colours on the market. The colour of the lip stain wasn't shiny, but the colour is suitable for a thin layer of clear gloss to add abit of shine to the lips. The best thing about the Colour Sensations Lip Stain is the staying power of it, it lasted AGES! It lasted well over 10 hours, which involved drinking, eating and me rubbing my lips, it was perfect, seriously great staying power.
The effects of wearing the Lip Stain Colour was really good, I got a lot of comments about how nice my lips looked, and how everyone loved my lip colour, which were so nice! But also my lips felt really nice, as the lip colour enabled my lips to be able to breathe but also enabled my lips to feel nourished and moisturised though the use of the colour, which is similar to a lot of other lip colour products, so real advantage. But also the Lip Stain product was perfect for a night out, as it lasts throughout eating and drinking, and even was still on when I went to bed, so no need for re application.
I can't recommend the Maybelline Colour Sensational Lip Stain enough! It really is a great product, with amazing staying power, which I have not seen on a another lip product ever, and the Lip Stain is so easy to wear, unlike lipstick the Lip Stain gives the lips a subtle but bright coverage of colour, perfect for nights out, but also, especially the Tender Rose colour, is really easy to wear to work and wear it everyday. The only problem I have is that the lack of shades, I would love to see more shades of pink and red, and even more nude shades, so I can buy them all! Also The product is a great value for money, as you only really apply one layer, and the pen holds quite a lot of layers, as I newly brought the product, I can't say for sure, but should last over around 3 months, wearing it everyday, and last even longer if you just wear for special occasions.
Maybelline Colour Sensational Lip Stain is available at Boots and Superdrug, and some bigger supermarkets, which have a Maybelline section and it costs £5.99 for one pen. Superdrug currently have a buy 2, get one free on Maybelline products, and the pen is included in the offer.
