I tried the Maybelline Volum Express mascara because it was on offer. The usual price is around 6.99 (Superdrug) to 7.19 (Boots). I chose the non waterproof version, in 100% black. Are my lashes now colossal enough to frighten passing children? You have probably guessed the answer to that!
The brush is usually large and takes some getting used to although it does seperate lashes well once you are used to it.
One coat delivers a strong dark pigment which does create the illusion of volume as each lash is defined but I really don't think the mascara delivers much more than that, certainly not 9x volume as advertised. Second coats do help things along a small amount but are liable to clump, even when you follow the advice not to let the product dry between coats. I did however not suffer any smudging or flaking and the pigment stays strong.
The formula is supposed to be washable and removable with soap and water but I have no intention of soaping around my eyes. It does however remove easily with the basic eye make up removers without much trouble.
I would not suggest this mascara offers anything like spectacular results. It defines lashes as all with good dark pigment do, but beyond that, it is average. I am generously awarding 3 hearts based on the good color, a brush that defines lashes well one you are used to it, and good staying power. But I don't recommend this for any dramatic volume look, or for those who like to layer up their mascara as clumping is too much of a frequent occurrence then.
The Maybelline Volum' Express The Colossal Mascara is available for GBP 6.99.
The mascara is described as follows. "GET GORGEOUS VOLUME. COLLAGEN FORMULA + MEGA BRUSH. Why You'll Love It. Get gorgeous volume. Lush collagen-enriched plumping formula and Mega brush instantly build up volume, without clumps. Contact lens safe and ophthalmologist-tested."
To apply to this Tube simply turns on and then pulls on the closure at which the elongated and thin rod with the mascara brush off just hanging out. The brush is here elongated, normally thick and at the end it is narrower. The bristles have a normal thickness and a common arrangement and they may well dosed record something from the black mascara. With this brush you have now a couple of times over the lashes underline and this works very well. The brush is the mascara on the lashes well off without them clump together or that one fly arise. The eyelashes earth well separated, they are somewhat extended and they get both volume and density in a deep black. You have this mascara does not often apply to a super result to get, and thus it is economical. In the end you then thick black lashes with an amazing volume. The "inner lashes" you can, thanks to the narrow end applied well without being anmalt the eyelid and also you can make-up very well with this brush and the lower lash line, without the "painted". The mascara also not blurred, he feels not shear or otherwise interfere with the compatibility I am also satisfied. Nor can remove this mascara with cotton pads and eye make up remover super and without black borders. Overall, this mascara really is one of the best I've used. He separates the lashes well, it provides a little more length, for volume and thick black lashes. One need not take long, the mascara keeps super and not as well as the make-up removal is not a problem blurs.
I bought this mascara after I had read some good reviews about it in Glamour Magazine. I cannot believe I was daft enough to fall for it as this is possibly the worst mascara I have ever used.
The brush is the size of a house, to start with and if you have really tiny sparse lashes like I do then this just isn't going to work. My eye sight isn't too clever as well so I ended up with more mascara on my face than I did on my mashes. I took it off and started again and had the same problem.
Thsi wand is far too large to allow you to be able to get into the little corners and the brush does not load with any mascara so you are forced into having to jam the wand in and out of the tube. Thsi has the effect of introducing air into the tube (which you don't want) and so it goes on.
It makes the lashes look false and they clump together and look very unnatural. I have never had any compliments when I have worn this mascara and frankly it makes me embarrassed to wear it as I end up with panda eyes after a very short time as it also smudges badly and very easily.
At over £6 for a mascara I certainly expected better than this. It is poor quality, rubbish to be quite blunt and looks hideously false. There is o way I could possibly recommend this mascara.
This is such an awful mascara. when I use the brush, barely and product comes out and the brush is stupidly big.
It is extremely difficult to apply the product on, and when it is applied it is awful and clumpy.
The product also irritates my eyes.
would not recommend.
I actually found this mascara from Maybelline to be more 'blacker' than the 'Great Lash Mascara.'
The product itself is just a basic mascara but the aim is to bring you a really heavy and intense draw in a matter of minutes, hence the 'express' aspect described on the packaging.
It was all going so well, easy application and not too many coats, but then it clumped my lashes together so quickly I was so disappointed. Throughout the evening of wearing this, I was so aware of the clumping and embarrassed, I should have taken the time to remove it but didn't have time. The second thing that was not a great bonus was that I spent most of my evening crying with laughter then crying because the mascara was running and the stinging sensation was awful.
I could not wear the product again after that which is a shame.
Could not recommend this, sorry:(
Ok here is the problem with me and this mascara..... I do love it. I really do. It gives me amazing volume, decent length, it's very black, doesn't clump....basically it does everything I want a mascara to do. Here's the problem: this mascara irritates my eyes like no other! I don't even have sensitive eyes and I've never had issues with any mascara but this...should any of this get into my eye, it is like acid! Last time this happened, my eyes burnt so much and got so red and runny, I coudn't open my eye until I rinsed it with water for 5 minutes! I don't know what it is in this mascara that is so irritating but it's bad. It is a shame because I really love the results it gives but sadly I will not be repurchasing it.Compared to other high-end mascaras this is actually pretty decent. It has quickly become my go to everyday mascara. Be careful though, if you get too much in the brush it can get a bit clumpy . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . .. below is how my friend thinks of this mascara . . . . .
This is a lovely mascara! The wand is pretty big but it gets the product evenly spread out on my lashes. This only occasionally clumps and gives great volume to my lashes with good length as well, the formula is more on the wet side so there isn't much flaking. The packaging is also super cute and eye-appealing. Definitely one of my favourite mascaras
I'm slightly obsessed with mascara and have tried so many different types to try and achieve the dramatic, voluminous look I'm after. I was excited to try the Colossal Volume Express because I have liked other Maybelline mascaras in the past.
Like I say, I like a voluminous look and my pet hate with mascaras is when they seem to do nothing but intensify the colour a bit. I already have dark lashes- I want BIG lashes so this seemed like the perfect mascara for me.
Unfortunately I felt let down by this mascara and would definitely not re-purchase. The brush itself is quite large therefore it is difficult to coat the small inner lashes and is generally hard to manoeuvre around the lash area. The bristles are soft like a traditional mascara wand and the wand is also a classic shape. This would all be ok if the formula wasn't so viscous. When I removed the wand from the container there seemed to be far too much product on the brush. The product was thick and tar-like and seemed to harden quickly s whilst you were in the process of applying it the bottom coats would dry up and make it hard to apply more products with creating the awful spider like clumpy look feared by most mascara users.
Don't get me wrong the clumped up look works for some and this is a great mascara for that kind of over-the-top vibe but it isn't for me. There are far better mascaras on the market.
Maybelline Volum’ Express the Colossal Mascara
Why this product?
I use mascara like there is no tomorrow. I have very pale skin, eyelashes and eyebrows, and feel that I look like a boiled egg without at least my mascara on! When scouring my local Boots, the packaging seemed to jump out from the rest, in bright yellow and purple. It does not look expensive, and is a little tacky looking, but is happy and colourful. I looked at the packaging, and was further drawn to buy the product because of its chunky design. I struggle with thin tubes of mascara, and the bottle is shaped so it fits well into a gripped hand. I was drawn to the description that you only needed one coat.
As we have established, I bought the mascara. When I took it home, and took the brush out of the bottle to try the product, I notes that the brush was fairly long. When looking at mascara, I tend to avoid long brushes because I find them clunky and clumsy. This brush was tapered however, and the fine bristles seemed to spread the mascara evenly throughout my eyelashes without me smudging it. My eyes instantly looked more awake, and the colour looked flattering against my eye colour.
The mascara lasted all day, and did not flake or crumble. It was easily removed with a blob of coconut oil on a cotton wool pad.
Would I Recommend?
Maybelline's 'the Colossal Volum' Express Mascara is, unfortunately, a colossal letdown in my humble opinion! Us girls are always on the lookout for the perfect mascara that will make us look as we have naturally bountiful dark, thick, lush lashes but this quest does not end with this product!
The mascara comes in a thick, bright yellow, very robust looking tube which makes you think of volume as does the mascara wand which is similarly large and robust, all of which bodes well for application but although it does deliver a very good colour pigment ('Glam Black' is of the blackest black) it does not give the volume to lashes as claimed.
The mascara goes on thickly but not in the desired way. It causes lashes to clump together in places, requiring additional separation and also leaves excess product on lashes and annoyingly because of the size of the brush often on the eyelid itself!.
Can be bought cheaply on-line and if you don't mind having to separate your lashes after application or remove any excess product then you might consider buying it.
With so many different mascara's on the market today it is important for them to have an edge, a uniqueness that is there selling point and with this mascara there is nothing. It wear off during the course of the day very quickly, it does go on fairly well and doesn't clump but your eye lashes certainly do not have colossal volume with this product. I bought as a one off as I needed a quick replacement for my usual brand and was disappointed to say the least. It was thrown away as soon as I bought my usual brand as there was no point in keeping it.
This is the only maybeline mascara I have tried and it has not enticed me into trying another. The price is at the cheaper end of the market and the product explains why, it is not worth the same price as other brands out there.
I was looking for a new mascara and a couple of friends had suggested to me to get the Maybelline colossal volume mascara as they really liked the brush and the way it applied. I was also curious to try it so I thought I'd buy it when it was on offer in boots. It usually retails at £7.19 at Boots. I really liked the look of the brush and had seen the effect it had on my friends eyelashes; big and beautiful!
Unfortunately, I bought the waterproof version of this, thinking that it was a good idea for when I went to the beach and swimming, so that I wouldn't have to re apply make up after. I also thought it would be a good idea for rainy days when I don't have an umbrella!
The Waterproof version is pretty much the same as the normal version in terms of product design, except for the fact that any metallic purple bits on the normal version are a metallic turquoise colour on the waterproof version. The tube is a bright eye catching yellow and is in a curved shape with flat surfaces on the top and bottom. The brush is made of plastic and the bristles are very long and good at catching your eyelashes. Eyelashes instantly look bigger and better, and are easily separated by the brush.
Buying the waterproof version was a BIG mistake. When they say it's waterproof, they really mean it. It literally will not come off. I used to use a facial cleanser to remove my make up, but now I have to use make up wipes and make up lotions as it is just such a pain to take off.
It also rips half of your eyelashes out too when you attempt to remove it, and this can be painful and unpleasant. You really have to scrub at it to get it to come off and this is not what I paid for.
It also does not smell the best either, I cannot describe the smell but all I can say is its definitely not natural.
It is a shame that the waterproof version is like this, as I really like the effect the brush and the mascara gives. I would probably buy it again, just next time I won't be buying a waterproof one.
Diving into my huge mascara collection this is still the one that I pick up most often, despite the fact that I have many more new ones with various effects. Here are my thoughts.
This is bright yellow with purple under the lid and purple writing. This is great as it stands out straight away in my mascara bag so I can just grab it. The plastic is of greatly quality and this can shut airtight. This should be a given with mascaras to keep them moist and fresh but unfortunately this does not happen as often as it should so this is a huge advantage here.
There is also a cat eyes version of this mascara and unlike that one the brush here is straight and fairly thin with one bristles.
This mascara is nice and thick and goes easily on the lashes. One of my favourite things is that not only does it gives volume as promised this also gives amazing length. The lashes do not clump and even without an eyelash curler (I really should use one but don't) there is a decent curl too. I read an another dooyoo review a few days ago that the best way to apply mascara is on the top first and then the the other way. After trying this I can I say I agree and it made this mascara work even better.
This is also a very true black which I like in a mascara, as I need my lashes to stand out.
There is one issue with this mascara (but I find this with most Maybelline ones) is that it takes a while to dry, when I a wearing contact lenses this is not an issue but as I wear glasses half this time this can mean me sitting there with blurry vision for a couple of minutes so it doesn't mark them.
We have had some good weather here the last few weeks and as this is probably my third summer using this mascara I can say it is sweat proof. It does not last a shower but it is not advertised as waterproof so I would not expect that.
Price and Availability
This normally retails in Boots and Superdrug for about £7.99 but I can see this is one Amazon for £2 less. This is an absolute bargain. For a mascara that does not dry up in the container, creates beautiful lashes, doesn't flake and can last a very hot day I think even £7.99 is amazing.
I will continue to buy this product and would recommend it to anyone who wants long pretty lashes.
In the past I have never had an excuse in needing to wear mascara. This was the first one I ever brought and I only brought it because all my friends wore it and I felt left out. I tried one mascara whilst getting ready for Prom when my friend was doing my make-up. I told her mascara did not suit me but she insisted. Anyway, the situation ended up in her taking it off because I was right. A couple of years down the line I brought this to just use with one coat and again it did not suit me. However, when I wear foundation and liquid eyeliner this product really emphasizes the blackness around my eyes in just one coat and ever since I have used it everyday. The product makes my eyelashes darker and thicker and I really admire this.
The product itself comes in a cardboard container with the branding logo on. The card is half yellow and half black. This matches the outer product casing and the black mascara substance inside. The case is see through so that you can see the product you are buying. The tube itself is yellow and it has the branding logo on it in purple. Though I have noticed this item with black writing upon it now instead of purple. The container is in a nice slim shape and is very attractive. I find the applicator stick very effective and easy to use. It makes my eyelashes look a lot fuller quicker.
COST & RECOMMEND
I bought mine around two years ago for £6.99 in Superdrug. Though this sounds a little steep I find that considering this product has lasted me almost two and a half years that is is value for money. Though I don't use it as much as most girls so I'm guessing it would last others a little less. I know that you are not meant to use it for that long, but I won't waste it if ti still works. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who wants a product that will last them and that makes there eyelashes thicker and not longer.
I bought this mascara a couple of months ago perhaps.. I bought this because it was on offer (I love that Maybelline always do the best offers, money off, 3 for 2 etc.) Anyway, a short version is... I still use it this day! It really is a fantastic mascara, the effect it gives on your eyelashes is great! You will most definitely be receiving some compliments. Teamed with a dash of liquid eyeliner on your top lid, and your eyes really are amazing! It doesn't dry up too quickly at all, mine lasted for roughly 2-3 months, and that was with daily use, so really good life! It isn't too expensive, around £6-£8 depending on if there are offers on at the time, but it is 100% worth the money! I would happily recommend to a friend :-)
