Advantages: It's mascara, eyelashes are darker

Disadvantages: It's not amazing mascara

I am aware that not everyone goes for the drag queen look, but I've never really understood the whole less is more idea. (More is more! More more more!) Mascara can come in any colour as long as it is Black, and as far as I am concerned there is no such thing as eyelashes that are too long or too black. Right, now that we have those principles established, you can see where I was coming from in choosing this mascara.

I'm not going to call it a quest, because hopefully I have slightly more going on in my life than obsession with make up (there is obsession with reviewing, for a start), but I am always, lets say 'on the look out', for a really fabulous mascara. For me, like most make up wearing omen, it is the one item that I would least like to go without.

I'm quite a fan of Maybelline, who do produce some quality products at lowish prices, so when this new mascara appeared a few weeks ago I thought I'd give it a try. the packaging is not my first concern when buying makeup, but nice design does help, and this product doesn't have it. Bright acid yellow for goodness sake - yuck.

We're all well aware (that's us mascara wearers, I mean) that the cosmetic companies exaggerate their claims about make up. With mascara it is particularly pitiful, as they compete to promise the longest, strongest, most well defined lashes... admittedly, huge steps have been made in recent years and the cloggy black gunk of my teenage years is now a more scientific product.

This one though, COLOSSAL, was setting itself up for a fall with such a ridiculously bragging name. Then there's the stupid publicity:

Apparently the mascara is "enriched with collagen" - which I have previously dismissed as meaningless jargon designed to conjure up images of expensive beauty treatments and nothing more, but now I think about it more, I am wondering if this comes from an animal source and am feeling pretty repulsed. Double yuck.

Then there's the "oversized Megabrush". Oh, of course, if we wanted big lashes all we had to do was use a big brush! Oh, please.

Colossal promises up to 7 times more lash volume, in just one coat. 'Up to'. I'll just leave that phrase with you for a moment.

For me this mascara is unremarkable. It does make my lashes black and it does make them longer, no moreso than any other recently produced lash lengthening mascara though. I'll use it till it is finished but I won't choose it over other options in future, because it had no wow factor for me. If you do fancy trying it for yourself, this mascara currently costs between £4.50 and £7.

Summary: It's fine, it's not special, don't fall for the hype
