---The Packaging--- First of all, I bought this mascara, almost, strictly due to the packaging. What usually draws me in initially for mascara in the store is the brush. This mascara had wonderful packaging that displayed the brush very well. Brush is probably the second most important thing about mascara (for me) next to consistency of the formula itself. This brush is made of what appears to be pink silicone that is a good combination of resistance and give for a well made application brush. Also, did I mention it's pink, like I said packaging and product presentation seem to get me :). The name was also very appealing to me as I am a huge fan of the flapper/rocket era and the name definitely called out to me a little. I bought this product for around $7-8 and I got the washable (non-waterproof) kind in very black (which was the only color available at my drugstore at the time, I believe). ---The Formula--- As far as I am concerned this is the very most important aspect of good mascara. Personally, I like to have a couple different mascaras that are of different consistencies. For everyday wear, which is what I use this for, I like to have a medium thickness (not too watery or too thick) mascara that adds length, volume, and thickness to my lashes. This mascara has a formula that is on the thickish side that adheres well to lashes, however remains smooth.I have moderately long lashed that I do not use an eyelash curler on because they tend to curve without any help, especially when mascara is applied. This mascara does exactly what I want as far as providing some length, volume, and thickness. However the claim that the volume is 'colossal' may be a bit of a stretch. ---(WONDERFUL)Wear-ability--- Generally I use two light(ish) coats of mascara to polish of my look and for this mascara that was definitely plenty. It provides really good coverage and doesn't leave my lashes clumpy or stuck together. This mascara also has incredibly long lasting wear that left my eyelashes soft to the touch and pliable. I really love how flexibly my lashes feel when I am wearing this product. Also, I have not noticed any flaking throughout the day nor have I seen any sign of smudging or wearing off. This product also removes easily and cleanly when you are ready to take it off and it doesn't seem to leave me with the racoon-eye effect(i.e. black rings around the eyes). ---Conclusion--- I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a light-wear mascara that wants full coverage and some extra thickness, volume, and little length. Don't be fooled by the 'colossal' claims on the tube though. As far as I understand colossal means extremely large. It's a great mascara for daily wear, but I wouldn't consider it extreme. Overall, I would definitely suggest this product for someone looking for a well made mascara for everyday wear.
This mascara caught my eye a couple of weeks ago when I was in Superdrug, It's quite new on the market I think and I'd never seen it before so I decided to buy it! I paid around £5 for mine as it was on offer and the retail price is £7 or there abouts, which is an average price for a mascara and not too expensive. The mascara tube is chunky and very unique & eye catching. It is bright blue with pink writing on it and the lid screws off and it has the wand & plastic brush attached to it. The mascara brush is plastic & quite spiky which I don't like and it can catch my skin especially when I'm using it on my bottom lashes which makes me blink and makes my eyes water so it can cause the mascara to smudge which gets really messy so I have to be extra careful when I'm using it. The formula is quite 'wet' and not too thick but not too runny, though it does have a bit of a greasy feeling to it which I don't like but this goes once it has dried. It takes a while to dry though so I have to try not to blink for a few minutes! I have the mascara in black and it is a very dark, intense shade. The mascara brush separates my lashes and after a few coats my lashes look lifted and a lot thicker and volumised, but not anywhere near as long as they look with most of my other mascaras so this is definitely more of a volumising mascara than a lengthening mascara. The mascara isn't very easy to build up and it does clump after a few coats so I am not hugely impressed really! The lasting power of the mascara is really good and it stays in place all day (unless my eyes get wet - if they do it will smudge even though its supposed to be waterproof, but it doesn't flake or fade). Getting it off can be a bit of a task as it sticks to my eyelashes and I need to use a couple of make-up wipes on each eye even though I never wear that much of it (usually 3 coats). All in all I am going to give this mascara 3 out of 5 stars. It adds volume but not much length and it is not easily buildable as it clumps. I don't like the plastic brush or the slightly greasy formula either. The mascara does have many advantages though such as lasting power, bright packaging, intense colour & the volume it gives my lashes, so I do recommend it.
Mascara is the one piece of make up I would never even contemplate leaving the house without wearing, so it is fair to say I go through quite a lot of the stuff. Its not very often that I buy the same mascara each time as I like to mix things up and try different products and styles, if I ever found that perfect mascara I am sure I would stick with it, but alas the search is still on. My latest buy has been Maybelline's Colossal Volum Express The Rocket mascara which I picked up in Super drug on offer for £5.99 ( usual price £7.99 ). There are two versions available "waterproof" and "very black", I bought the latter simply because it was the only one they had in stock at the time. I have bought Maybelline products before and have always been pleased with their make up range so I was pretty excited to try this one. The mascara comes in the usual cardboard packaging with a clear plastic front to display the tube itself. The pink packaging gives the brand and product name along with a picture diagram of the "exclusive jet - glide brush". The back of the packaging gives general information including an ingredients list and warnings. Once opened the product should be used within six months. The 9.6ml tube is dark blue in colour with pink writing which gives the brand and product name. The tube is chunky and easy to hold. I really like the design of this mascara it looks quite bright and funky. The lid is simply screwed off to reveal the brush which is a little thinner than regular brushes, the Bristles are quite fine and evenly spaced. Maybelline claim that this mascara will create massive volume to the eye lashes without clumps. I apply the mascara to my eye lashes as I would with any other mascara. I find the brush glides easily and effortlessly thought the lashes coating them efficiently and evenly. I have found that one coat is sufficient for the daytime but if I want a more dramatic look I may re-apply. True to its word the mascara does create volume to the lashes, although I wouldn't go so far as to say 8x more volume as advertised. The mascara itself is of a good consistency being neither too runny or too thick, I have not experienced any clumping. As mentioned earlier I bought the regular mascara not the waterproof and whilst I have not experienced the mascara running I have noticed it does occasionally smudge on the lower lashes which is a little disappointing. It is not difficult to remove, a few wipes with a face wipe is sufficient to remove the product from the lashes. Maybellines Colossal Volum Express Rocket Mascara is a good mascara but not one without its flaws, after all a mascara prone to smudging isn't great. That being said, I would consider buying it again should I see it on offer but I would probably go for waterproof version next time.
