One of the things that drew me into purchasing this product is that it has a unique system inside the tube which produces clump free mascara. Basically there is a little contraction inside that pulls any excess mascara off the brush so you are only left with the amount of mascara you need on the brush. The tube this mascara comes in is bright green so it really does stand out on the shelf it has a standard size tube and of course you twist the lid off to reveal the applicator brush attached. The lid is a fair size and fairly comfortable to hold in your hand while applying the product and it is easy to gain control of the applicator with a good grip.

The first time I used this I was really impressed I found it easy to use and it provided a natural yet notably difference to my lashes. I find the brush perfect for separating my lashes and helping to make them appear longer and fuller. It is the perfect size to easily coat your lashes in a couple of strokes and I find that one coat creates a nice casual effect defining the eyes while drawing attention to them but it is not over the top. The bristles on the brush are spaced out well meaning it pulls your lashes apart and prevents them all clumping together as promised.
Although the brush is rather large it is flexible which means it can reach all of my lashes with ease including my bottom lashes and the harder to reach corner lashes. I think this is what helps create bold yet natural effect as every single lash can be coated in mascara and it does make for easy application.
I do find because of the anti clumping formula I can apply more than one coat to make a more dramatic effect if I am going out for the evening and there is no mess or flaking just fuller longer appearance. Saying that when you first apply the mascara although the consistency does not seem too runny on the brush it does feel rather wet on your lashes and takes what seems forever to dry. This was one of my downsides as I do like my make up products to be quick in application as with four young children I do not really have much time putting makeup on.
I also found that the mascara lasted extremely well I can apply it in the morning and it is still visible in the evening when I come to take my make up off. It does not flake as the day goes on no matter how many coats I apply to my lashes and generally looks really nice for the full time I am wearing it.It was a little difficult to remove this mascara it is great that it has staying power but I really don't like having to rub my eye lashes over and over again just to get them back to their natural state.
It has never caused any irritation to my eyes no matter how much of it I use and it does not feel too heavy on your lashes when you apply it which is great. I do find the brush a little difficult to put back in to the tube I am not sure if it is because of the anti clump system or just that the brush is really flexible but it can be annoying trying to push it back in without the brush bending. One thing to note is the black version of this mascara is not at all dark I would say it is a more grey colour which I do like as I find black a little too heavy on my eyes sometimes. If you like blackest black mascaras this would not be a great product for you as it is a very light colour and this helps create a more natural everyday look rather than a lets go out and party effect.
This mascara costs around £8 which is pretty standard for mascara and I do think it is worth the retail price. You can find it on special offer if you shop around. I really liked this mascara it is not the best out there but it does help lengthen and thicken your lashes with no clumps or smudging as promised. It is rather average compared to other mascaras on the market but I do still use this from time to time just to shake things up a little. There are a few downsides to the product but there are an equal amount of good points so my suggestion is give it a go you might like it.
I received Maybelline Define-A-Lash Mascara in black as a freebie with a magazine. I had heard mixed reviews but I really liked it and would recommend this but I do think this is more suited to someone with longer lashes.
I think it gives a false lash effect when the lashes are longer but when used on shorter lashes it still looks good. As described it is clump free and my lashes always look full and long when I use this mascara, I find that the brush really seperates your eyelashes. I have also used the brow colour aswell but preferred the black. I was so impressed with the mascara I have also used the waterproof version aswell. It is good vaule for money also. I think there is quite alot of bad reviews about this product but I have recommended this to my friends and they havent had any complaints. This is a good edition to any girls cosmetic bag.
If memory serves me right, this was the mascara that was accused of false advertising as the model in the advert was wearing false eyelashes.
Having used this product I can understand why they felt the need to use falsies. After using the Maybelline Great Lash mascara for many years and always being happy with it, I figured that Maybelline was a brand I could rely on when it came to mascara, and so decided to try this new one.
I used this mascara once and then never used it again. I found it massively disappointing, particularly with all the hype and heavy advertising it had.
I found that the brush was plasticy, and the mascara didn't coat the brush very well. When I applied it, the mascara did not coat my lashes much at all, meaning that I had to apply several coats. It really didn't give the coverage promised - nor, as the name suggests, did it define each lash.
Maybelline's Colossal Volume Express Mascara is much better - if you are going to buy a Maybelline mascara I would recommend you buy that one instead of Define-A-Lash.
A couple of months ago I complimented my sister on her amazing looking lashes- I actually thought that she was wearing false lashes as they looked so long and voluminous. In fact, she revealed she was wearing this product- Maybelline Define-A-Lash waterproof mascara. I was sold, but had recently bought a tube of a different mascara so had no intention of buying it myself for a while.
My sister ended up buying it for me as part of a birthday present a couple of weeks back and I have tried it several times since, but sadly with less than desirable results. I guess the simplest way to describe the outcome would be SPIDERLASHES!! Yes, they looked long, and yes, they were defined but they looked wirey rather than voluminous.
The tube promises voluptuous volume, which I would definitely dispute! It's incredibly hard to remove also- very stubborn!
Despite not paying for this myself, I am aware that it retails between £7-8 depending where you shop, which I think is an awful lot considering the results it gave me. However, I guess it must be different for different people hence how come my sisters lashes looked so good- but it's quite an expensive gamble just to see if your lashes will look as good as hers!
On the upside- the packaging is good looking and eye catching; a hot pink tube with a clear bright blue tip (to indicate it's waterproof-ness)- but that's about as far as the positives go for me.
This was another one of the items I first tried when boots had a 3 for 2 offer on Maybelline. Unlike most of the other products in this range, which I love, my opinions on this mascara are only so so. I think the major problem is that it simply promises too much and doesn't really deliver.
The first thing that I look for in a mascara is that it's waterproof, because otherwise I do end up looking a little like a panda, so I was drawn to this. What's more the packaging is vibrant so you can't help but notice it on the shop shelf (it also makes it easier to find should you drop the mascara in your car). My eyelashes aren't the longest so I chose this mascara as it claimed to lengthen the look of eyelashes. I have to say, it delivered on this promise, making my eyelashes appear much longer and fuller. The shape of the brush also makes it easier to reach the little lashes at the corners of your eyes and the shorter lashes on your lower lids meaning that you're less likely to miss anything, and your eyes look open and awake. For the first week or too after buying this I was really impressed.
However, whilst this mascara is brilliant when you first open it, it tends to lose its abilities over a not-very-long time period. It says on the side of the mascara "no clumps," which was true for the first few weeks, but I am currently in clump central, and I don't like it. Sure I can fix this with a little bit of work, but should I really have to? I understand that mascara, like any makeup has got a shelf life, but I was unimpressed by how short this seems to have been. I don't think I'll buy this product again.
Brought this because I really needed a waterproof mascara to go swimming with and it was on sale in boots. Loved the packaging in my opininion one of the best out there, however the product wasn't so great. These opinions come from someone whith very long, fine, light eylashes.
Pros - fab packaging, nice consistancy to the liquid and a sturdy wand and brush. It's easy to apply the mascara with full eylash coverage as the brush is built withn the contors of your eye in mind, also the mascara itself doesn't clump when applied. The product is also extremly waterproof and will definatly not have run after swimming.
Cons - The brush isn't ideal for seperating lashes, my lashes are, as I stated previously very fine, and are prone to sticking together this mascara for me didn't do anything to improve this, it made the problem worse creating a spider leg affect. My biggest problem with the mascara is that it's perhaps too water, I used various different waterproof mascara removal techniques inc. L'Oreal & Simple waterproof eye-makeup remover and the Body Shop make-up removal wipes but I couldn't budge it. I ended up spending about half an hour removing the mascara and vowed to never use this product again.
I'm forever on the search for a mascara that actually lives up to its claims. So having gotten bored of my maybelline 'great lash' mascara I went in search of a new one that didn't cost the earth.
Whilst browsing the Boots website I noticed that this particular mascara had a lot of positive reveiws. So I jumped right in and went to my nearest Boots to pick one up (I had lots of advantage points)
This mascara comes in a 6ml tube. Its is green with a bue top (and if your like me, you will get home and panic that you have purchased electric blue mascara!) It has define-a-lash written on the side and also the fact that it is waterproof.
This mascara normally retails at £7.99 but I did purchase this with Boots points. Maybelline products are normally on offer in most shops at some point so it is worth looking out for a bargain.
**Does it do what it states?**
Well this mascara states that it is 'zero clump'. When you take the brush out from the tube you do notice that there are no clumps but the brush is different from others that I have seen. For starters that actual brush is rubber and is very flexible. The are no 'bristles' which helps the mascara not to clump.
When applying the mascara it does go one evenly and there are no horrible clumps however my lashes don't look particuarly defined. They just look like lashes. Suppose this would be ok if you like the 'very natural' look but not if you like people to know that you are wearing make - up.
It is worth pointing out that there is a 'volumising' mascara in this range however it does not appear to be waterproof which is why I didn't buy it.
Basically its an ok mascara but my search will continue once this one is finished.
I had a fave Rimmel mascara and when that was discontinued I was totally lost! I have tried almost every mascara imaginable and some are good and some are bad but none quite did the job. I use eyelash curlers and I like my eyelashes to stay up where as a lot of mascaras look good when you put it on but them your lashes drop through out the day.
Maybelline Define-a-Lash is the best mascara i have found so far i even prefer it to the Rimmel one now! After curling my lashes it goes on nice and even with no clumps and it really does define every lash. It dries really quickly and holds brilliantly my lashes still look pretty decent the next day lol!
I always use it on holiday when swimming because unlike other 'waterproofs' I have tried it never runs or crumbles off. It could also be a money saver because you only need one coat it lasts a long time and is more than always on offer at 3 for 2, this is good because I hate paying loads for make up but i dont mind paying £7-8 for something i love. it is also easy to get hold of as it is available in most shops #(Boots, Superdrug, chemists).
I would recommend anyone to try it and see the difference it makes.
Oh another good point it that it is REALLY black, goes on nice and dark to make them stand out.
I have used different mascaras for years - I never seem to find one that I like. I bought this recently from Boots for £4.80 as it was on special offer (RRP £8.80). I have been using the mascara now for around a week and so far, I am really impressed. The brush is really light and distributes the mascara very evenly onto my eyelashes. The brush really helps to define the eyelashes and separate them well. There are very few clumps left after application. The mascara has both a great lengthening and volumising effect. One negative of the mascara is that it is really difficult to wash off but I guess this is a plus as it does not run when eyes are watering - it doesn't even come off in the shower! Also, it's really difficult to apply more than one coat without lashes looking spidery. However, overall, given the price it currently sells for in Boots, I think this is a great value mascara and one that I will definitely be using for a while.
Ok so this product seems to get good and bad reviews, I'll point out now, my experience with it, wasn't the best. Saw this advertised on TV a while back and really got me interested in how it claimed to "define your lashes". Now isn't this what we strive to do, to have that ultimate butterfly, fluttery eye lid?
So 3 for 2 is on in Boots, iv got my 2 products, I'm 1 short. I don't really wear mascara all the time as I despise trying to take it off at the end of the day. Anyhoo I thought I'll try the product now. I was excited about it, and very optimistic as I thought " a product can not lie, it has to do what it says on the package, there marketing rules arnt they?"
So I take the tube out and I firstly notice how 'wobbly it is'. I pass it through my lashes and was very dissapointed. I was expecting seperated and defined lashes, and what i got was just the usual lashes grouped together. The bristles was made of soft plastic I think and they were quite far apat seperated. I mean it looks like your standard mascara wand; yet also the product appeared quite wet on the brush also. I applied a second coat, yet it just seemed to clump my eyes lashes together again. I was getting the "overdone spider look" that I didnt want. Due to the shape and style of the brush I wasnt even able to attempt and wipe any of the product away as i took it out of the tube.
I have Personally been left dissapointed with this product, and it annoys me at how much it costs. This is my own experience with this and i wouldn't reccomend it at all.
Hope this helps . . .
Thanks Jade **
I think I may have finally found a mascara I can stick to forever and ever! Not many people can say this I know, as from the age of 15 I have searched high and low and Im sure you ladies all know!
I have bought both varieties of this mascara, the green one and the bright pink one. I do have to say I prefer the green one, but wish it was it the bright pink tube instead. I am a girl afterall! What I loved about this product was probably the wand. It is made of a kind of flexible rubber but is different from most mascara brushes as this one does not become tatty due to its rubbery material. The brush is also slightly curved which helps to make your eyelashes curl the right way whilst making them look longer and thicker. When you have the mascara out of the tube itself, there is a de-clumper which helps to give exactly the right amount of 'mascara' on the wand thus not allowing your eyelashes to clump together. This mascara is really good for increasing the length of my lashes, but I also like to give my lashes some volume so I do tend to apply a number of coats. Even when applying a few coats of this mascara does not clump my eyelashes. I absolutely love it. After applying this product, my eyelashes and longer, fuller and curled. Whats not to love!
I love mascara, got to admit I tend to buy every new one that comes out, but this one is definatly one of my favourites.
I use this as an every day mascara, and wear it to work. I find that unlike some it doesnt clump up or look like you have spiderweb eyes! Its a really dark mascara, and gives your lashes a good wide eyed effect, and really lengthens the lashes. I wear this mascara day in day out, and find it never smudges even after a long day at work, and when I get home the mascara is still in tact just as I applied in the morning!
It's really good vaule for money and I find that alot of the time Superdrug has this on offer 2 for £10.00 so really can't complain!
The mascara does create a sexy lash effect, and got to say makes me feel like I look good for work, so would definatly recommend it! Only downfall is with the waterproof one it takes ages to get off!!!
It was the lovely Fuchsia pink packaging that first caught my eye, Maybelline know how to turn a woman's head don't they !
At least that gorgeous bright pink makes a refreshing change from the normal run of the mill black plastic tubes that we always seem to be offered.
The £8.80 price tag wasn't quite so appealing but at least Boots had an offer on, buy three for the price of two ! I had to giggle at this offer, I think that buying one mascara at that price is fairly extravagant never mind lashing out nearly £18 for three - but on the positive side if you took advantage of the offer you would collect 32 points on your Boots Advantage Card.
My lashes used to be long and full but now I do need a certain amount of help to achieve that look, I don't want massive sweeping lashes but I do like my eye lashes to look reasonably thick, it helps to make your eyes look larger.
Waterproof mascara is a must for me, my eyes always seem to water in the bright light and if my mascara runs then it looks a total mess, if the top lashes start to run then it blackens your eye make up too.
The Maybelline Define A Lash waterproof mascara comes in two shades, brownish black and very black. The brownish black is the one for me, just slightly softer and therefore better against my pale skin tone.
As much as I moan about the prices I have had Maybelline mascaras time and time again and up to date I have always been pleased with them.
The mascara has a good `bushy` brush which Maybelline describe as being shaped to the lash. The brush is fairly firm to the touch and you can see that the bristles are cut to match the shape of the eyelashes.
The mascara has a decent wand length and the brush slides in and out of the tube of mascara fairly easily.
I am not a huge fan of very `wet` mascara, I prefer a thicker solution, it always seems easier to apply. The Define A Lash is maybe a little wetter than I would like but that is hard to tell before you buy .
As always I load the brush and work upwards from the root of the lash to the tip, that sweeping movement adds length to the lashes.
Usually I apply one layer and then let it semi-dry before I coat the lashes for a second time but interestingly enough Maybelline say that you apply wet coat on top of wet coat to build volume and to define the lashes.
After applying my first coat I dipped into the tube again and tried to apply a second coat but the effect that the first coat had achieved was being wiped out by applying a second coat so soon after.
So I reverted to my normal practise and let the first coat dry a little and the results were far better.
My bottom lashes aren't all that long and the bushy brush seemed slightly bulky and awkward when trying to coat my lower lashes. After a few strokes I found that by using just the tip of the brush at a different angle I could achieve a satisfactory outcome.
As Maybelline state, the mascara doesn't clog on the brush or form clogs when it is applied to the lashes and it does define and add volume as promised.
I do feel that the brush is maybe a little bit too firm when it comes to dealing with the lower lashes but maybe that is only because my lower lashes are short.
Some mascara is definitely made for the younger woman but I think that Maybelline have provided a product for all age groups here. The brownish black mascara is the perfect shade for me and the mascara doesn't feel weighty or unnatural after you have applied it.
Although it does give you sweeping lashes they don't look out of place on the mature woman, after all I still like to flutter my eyelashes now and again !
When you want to remove the mascara you will need to use make a make up remover pad and a good one at that, the mascara is strong and does take time to fully remove.
Maybelline state that the mascara is hypo-allergenic and it is safe to use if you wear contact lenses.
I have been pretty pleased with the product, the top lashes are far easier to coat than the lower lashes but that is a minor issue.
The mascara does create definition and volume but I think how you go about creating it is up to the individual.
I love this mascara it really gives great results. It certainly increases lash length quite considerably without clumping. Keeps your lashes well separated. The draw backs being you have to apply a few coats for dramatic effects and I find it isn't long before it has dried out and you need to purchase another one but it is well worth it as it really does make you eyes beautifully framed. I have relatively long lashes but they are quite fine and the smaller ones are quite fair. This mascara really does fill them out and define the fairer ones and after a few coats wow my lashes look fantastic. It lasts all day and my lashes are still quite flexible where as some mascaras can make them quite brittle. It doesn't smudge or run when eyes watering. Causes no irritation and easily removed by eye makeup remover. It is a reasonable price for a product that gives you quality results.
On Sunday night (just gone lol) my mate was getting ready round my house for a mad night out. Raiding my cupboards and stealing whatever fitted in her handbag and squeezing into my favourite top (oh and nicking me watch lol) I think she knew she ripping the proverbial and emptied out her make up bag giving me loads of new make up she don't like. I'd already nabbed a wicked lippy and another mascara off her (cos I was running out lol) and she gave me this one too. Her words about this one was it's 'crap in a tube so you may as well have it' but it saved me buying a new one I'd probably hate (I hate buying mascaras I really do!! lol) and at £7.99 I was pleased to get this as a freebie!
Comes on a card with clear plastic covering. The tube itself is long, cylinder, made of plastic and is bright shimmery green with a blue plastic jewel like thing on one end of the tube kind of thing. In silver writing on one side I'm told it is Maybelline Define-A-Lash waterproof mascara and that's it on the information stakes.
Well I was really excited at the thought of using this cos if the truth be known I don't think I've ever splashed out £7.99 on a mascara before and my expectations were really high! However this really is... sh... sorry rubbish!
As you pull the' wand' out of the tube the brush situated at the bottom wobbles all over the place and it's very difficult to control. It's made of fibres which feel rubbery to the touch, the smell is horrid (really cheap) and the brush is coated well with black mascara (in my case).
Pulling the brush out of the tube or shoving it back in is flipping hard cos it's so flexible.
So you can simply apply one coat or build up the colour, that is your choice! Though saying that trying to put another coat on over a coat is well hard!
I find it a nightmare to apply it quite frankly. The brush wiggles everywhere, I find it hard to cover all of my eyelashes and even though within the tube this contains a 'de-clumper' I can certainly spot clumps on my lashes and the more I try to brush them out the more spidery and stuck together they look. My friend only bought this last week and I thought it was old stuff that had gone off although the liquid mascara is wet.
I do feel it appears to lengthen my lashes quite a bit but it doesn't thicken them and i simply it defines what you own already with a lumpy effect! I didn't realise till I used this just how thin my eyelashes were and by the time I had used this my lashes they were heavily coated (through trying to brush the lumps out so much), they felt heavy and looked glued up and just awful!
Is it waterproof though. Yes I mean splashes of water waterproof. If you have water on your eyes and you rub them then it does smear and smudge a bit but really it's rather good at being waterproof I do have to concede to that claim. Removing it is hard work though because of it's staying power and I find to remove this I really do need a very good (oily) eye make up remover, however it does come off you just have to be patient.
My major problem with this though is actually after removing it my eyes feel really agitated and quite sore. I feel like I have flakes of mascara in my eyeballs although I don't.
I don't like this at all. I don't like the brush, the clumps and the soreness of my eyes after wearing it. I look like I own spiders as eyelashes with spindly hairs and I would heavily recommend you don't waste you money on this!
Available in all good chemists and supermarkets and it is ophthalmologically tested and suitable for sensitive eyes (ahem me thinks not!) lol.
