Advantages: interesting texture
Disadvantages: lasting power, some odd colours
Maybelline's Dream Mousse Blush is part of a range made that includes foundation, blush, concealer and most recently eye shadow. The idea of this range is that all of these prodcts have a unique mousse texture just like the dessert of the same name.
I first tried this out when people were moving away from traditional powder blushes and magazines were full of articles hyping up the benefits of new mousse and creme style blushers. As I wanted a new pink blusher at the time I thought I would investigate on of these new types and Maybelline was one of the ones mentionned. As it was markably cheaper than some of the other options by Chanel and the like, I plumped for this.
The product comes in a small glass pot with a colour coded lid. The lid is a screw type. There is actually not that much of the product in there but as it is of a mousse consistency, a little goes a long way. You have to be careful when using the mousse as initially I took a big blob on my finger but quicky reallised that it is much better to start of with a tiny bit and go back for more if necessary. It is very easy to use. Simply smile so you can see the apples of your cheeks and smooth onto your cheeks. As you spread the mousse out it turns powdery. I didn't find this always very reliable in terms of results, sometimes it worked and sometimes once you had spread out the product you ended up with it all over you cheeks though I imagine it just takes a while to get the hang of.
There are I believe five colours available. Coffee Cream, Peach, Dolly Pink, Mauve and Plum. I tried the Dolly Pink at first and was rather disappointed. It is a light pink in the pot which looked okay to me as I wanted something light for my pale skin. However, when I got it on, it looked an anwful artificial Barbie pink, and worse it was glittery and making my cheeks sparke. Not a success. I decided to try one more shade before giving up on the range. So I went back and got the next shade up the Mauve. This turned out much bettter, a deep pink shade that gives a lovely healthy glow effect. I also tested the plum on my hand and didn't see a huge difference between it and the Mauve.
I tried using it two ways. Firstly on bare skin. This looked nice but wore off incredibly quickly probably beecause there was nothing underneath it to keep it in place. Within two hours it was as if it had never been applied. Secondly with foundation and loose powder underneath. This time it stayed in place much better and for longer. However, applying it was more difficult as I found that as I rubbed the product onto my cheek with my finger, I was simultaneously taking off the layer of foundation and powder underneath so I ended up with patches of bare skin. Not a good look.
This is available in Boots and Superdrug and most independants that I have been into. I think they sell for around £6 per pot though from time to time I see offers such as 2 for £10. For me, though I like most of the colours (the exception being the awful Dolly Pink), I find the application and lasting power disappointing. I haven't thrown it away, it's still in the drawer just in case I give it another try but for now I am sticking to good old powder based blusher. Right now I am using Bourjois Little Round Pot Of Blush in Rose D'Or and I would reccommend that over this.
Summary: Not awful but there are better blushers on the market
