I don’t wear a primer all the time as frankly I just couldn’t be bothered but when I am making a big effort and putting on a full face of makeup then I like to use a primer to prep my skin for the makeup and just generally make it look better.
I like the Maybelline dream primer at the minute as it is one of the nicest feeling ones to wear on my skin. The problem that I sometimes have with primers is that by the time you have applied them then put foundation on top my skin can be left feeling really heavy. This has a nice consistency and doesn’t leave my skin heavy and clogged feeling.
I only need a tiny bit of this primer for it to be effective. If I put on loads then it can weigh my skin down and feel a bit greasy. A little goes a long way and covers my whole face with no greasy feeling.
It works instantly to make my skin appear more flawless and evens it out and reduce the look of pores. It helps my foundation adhere better to my skin for a longer lasting coverage and once I have applied my foundation it really does help to give that air brushed look with less visible pores and unevenness.
I think this makes a big difference to the look and feel of my skin when applying makeup and really helps my foundation last longer on my skin. It is a little bit more expensive than most normal Maybelline products at £8.99 but because you only need such a tiny amount of the primer it lasts for ages so ends up working out at really good value for the money.
I haven't always used a primer when doing my makeup but as soon as I started using one under my foundation regularly, I was hooked. I was in Boots and had a voucher for some money off a Maybelline product. This primer was £8.99 at the time at original price, but I got a small amount off of this. However, I would like to say that I probably wouldn't buy this product again at full price, I would be more inclined to try a cheaper version to see if that worked as well as this one.
So, when I first tried this product, I wasn't sure about it. It comes in a very small (about half the size of my Dream Matte Mousse foundation pots) pot which is coloured in a very light shell pink. It has a screw top lid, which I like because it means it is handbag and makeup bag friendly. Inside, the product is clear in colour and has a silicone-based texture. It has the appearance and feel of a thick gel.
The product itself smooths on very easily and I usually use it mainly on my problem areas, like my T-zone, to keep my foundation in place better. A primer is supposed to prepare your skin before putting foundation on. This means there is a smooth canvas for you to work with and helps the makeup stay put for longer. This helps to curb peeling, rubbing off and creasing of my foundation, which in my opinion makes it worthwhile. It only adds a couple of seconds to my makeup routine in the morning, but adds hours to the staying power of my foundation.
The only bad thing I have to say about this product is that the price is quite high. Even though I like the effects of this product, I am running out of it pretty rapidly because I use it so often so I think I will probably try a cheaper version if I can find one. I am interested to see whether a cheaper one would work as well as this one does.
Overall, I think this is a fab product and if I ever get some more vouchers this will be the first product I buy, but otherwise, I think this is too expensive for me. So the price knocks off one star for me.
I've really only been using a facial primer for the last few years now. I decided as I was getting older my face needed a little bit more help to look natural than just a quick sweep of blusher and some lip gloss and so I started using a Benefit primer. I find primer works really well for my skin as it really smoothes it out and allows me to start with a nice clean base on which to apply my make up. However, when that primer ran out I decided I couldn't really justify the £25 price tag and so set about to find a cheaper but still effective primer.
The results of my search was this brilliant Dream Smooth primer from Maybelline. The primer comes in a little glass pot with a screw top lid and looks like a lot of the other Maybelline products such as the eyeshadow and blush so you really need to look at the lid to see what you're buying but once you've found it I think it's a really convenient little tub. It doesn't take up much room in my make up bag and more importantly it is quite secure so the product does not spill out and get lost or make a mess which is nice.
The product is actually really quite strange, you wouldn't think by looking at it that it does what it does but it does! (That's a mouthful!) It is a clear gel which I think has a bit of a pink tinge to it but I can't actually tell if that's just the packaging on the bottom shining through! The gel is really light but fairly solid and all you need to do is get a little bit on your fingertip and then smooth is all over your face. I find it quite amazing the way it just smoothes on as it really just blends in almost immediately and smoothes my skin instantly. My skin really feels very smooth and gives it such a nice canvas on which I can begin to start putting my make up on. You could put your make up on straight away after applying this product if you wanted to but I often wait a few minutes just to give it time to really sink in but it does it pretty instantly so I don't really need to worry. Maybelline say that this primer contains elastomers which instantly smooth out skin and I would definitely agree with this.
What's great about this gel too is that it really balances out my face and it is almost as if my face has been airbrushed, it looks that even and perfect and I love the nice dewy young look it gives my face.
I don't like to wear lots of heavy face make up like lots of foundation so I find this Maybelline Dream smooth primer is perfect for allowing me to show a somewhat of a natural face without it looking dull and uneven. I find the effects of the primer really do last most of the day when I am wearing my make up and keep my make up in place and I never need to touch up my make up which is nice, I can just put it on in the morning and my face is presentable for the rest of the day.
A little 7ml pot costs £8.99 which compared to most other primers on the market is a really good price and this is a product that works for me so I would definitely recommend.
I was recently in-between primers, and needed a new favourite. A wide variety was available at high street stores, but this maybelline primer caught my eye due to the fact that it was sold out in most of the stores in the city center. After being able to locate the primer I was not disappointed.
The primer comes in a small, pink circular container that has a screw-on lid. It easily sits in the palm of your hand and can easily be opened and closed allowing full access to the product. The primer itself is medium textured and transparent and is easily applied due to its smooth nature.
~How to use~
This primer is best applied with the use of clean fingers. This allows you to massage the product into your face. As the primer comes in a handy tub you can choose the amount that you need; a major flaw with many primers as they usually come with a pump application or in a tube so you end with too much product and struggle to put it back.
I tend to use this primer most mornings. The primer can be applied before foundation to create a smooth base or it can be used on its own to give a fresh faced feeling.
The main benefits of the primer are that:
- it is easy to use
- gives a smooth base
- it is lightweight
- cheap price but great quality
-small quantity of product in the container
-hard to find in stores
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who wants an easy affordable way to have a make-up artist ready base in order to achieve the perfect look. This is why I award the maybelline primer 4 out of 5 stars and it does exactly what it says on the wrapper.
Before you paint your face...
I received a free sample of this with a magazine when it was launched a while back and really liked it. So when the Boots website was selling this recently at a third off I decided to buy a full sized version.
Primers seem to be everywhere at the moment. Like the primers you use on your walls before you paint them, they are designed to give a smooth and perfect base on which to work!
A flawless base
The Maybelline primer is designed to give a flawless base and smooth skin. It is also said to "reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a more radiant, youthful appearance". It can be worn on its own, or you can apply it before your foundation.
Silky soft skin
This comes in a small glass jar measuring 7ml. Inside, the primer itself is a clear gel. You only need to use a small amount of this, and it is very easy to apply to the skin. As you smooth it onto your face it seems to disappear into the skin almost instantly and it really does leave skin feeling beautifully smooth. Even a while after applying, my face feels supple and silky smooth. I don't know how it works, but this really does smooth the skin, and it also makes my skin appear a little brighter too.
It is very easy to apply foundation to the skin after using this, as it leaves the surface of the skin so smooth, and it doesn't interfere with other products you may use. Once it is on the skin it sinks in leaving no residue. It really gives you a nice base to work with.
No massive change
However I am not entirely convinced this makes a massive difference to the overall appearance of my face after applying moisturiser. While it undoubtedly smooths the skin and gives a nice base to apply makeup too, I don't think this has a massive overall effect on my appearance.
Looking online, it seems the best place to buy this is on ebay where you can buy a new jar for around £6.50 and upwards. From Superdrug this costs £8.99.
In summary ...
Although I like this product, I am not sure I would buy it again as I am not convinced it really has such a huge effect on the way my face looks. I would pay about £5 for it but I think much more than this is a bit steep.
I'm a massive fan of Maybelline and have recently discovered the benefits of a primer so this product seemed an ideal cosmetic item to try - and boy was I pleased! I bought the primer for £8.99 in Superdrug, though you can probably purchase it for much less online.
The primer comes in a small pot with a silky, pink lid. The lid is easily unscrewed and also easily tightened so there's very little chance of it drying up. The lid is adorned with brown and white text in the same style and font as the entire range of Maybelline Dream collection (nearly all of which I'd recommend).
The primer itself is of a creamy gel consistency which feels light and cool on the skin. It also feels moisturising and gentle, great for sensitive skin. I used my fingers to gently rub the primer in, though an applicator brush may work well too. I wouldn't recommend using a sponge as I found the sponge soaked up most of the primer and left little for my skin.
ON THE SKIN
The primer helped 'blur' my imperfections, but not completely diminish them. It also made my skin feel silky and supple, evened out ready for the application of further make up. Though you can wear this alone, it provided me with virutally no coverage. It gave a nice shimmery glow which would look perfect in hot climates on holiday. I also noticed my make up lasted longer, and kept better, than it usually does without a primer base.
I'd definitely recommend this product for those wanting to create a smooth, supple and silky base in which to apply make up. The primer retained my make up for longer and helped me look more polished throughout the day.
~ Primers ~
Before I knew a lot about make-up I used to apply my foundation straight onto my skin after letting a moisturiser sink into my skin. Until I had my first photo-shoot I didn't really know about primers and what they were used for. Ever since then I have always used one under make up. There are lots of different primers available to buy and some are much better than others. These all vary in price and can be purchased at various different stores such as Boots, Superdrug, House of Fraser and Debenhams. Of course you can also purchase them from various online stores as well. Primers are made to create the perfect canvas ready for your make-up. You can wear a primer alone with no make-up which I personally have never done. Primers are mainly for smoothing the skin and covering imperfections ready for you to apply the foundation base. I also find when using a primer that my make-up looks flawless and it stays on for longer as well.
~ The product ~
This product is made by Maybelline and is one of 2 primers in the Maybelline range. I can't actually find this product on their website but I believe this product is new. The product is made from a gel formula with elastomers which instantly smoothes the skin ready for make-up. The product also claims to blur away imperfections, refine skin texture, creates a perfect canvas for make-up and can be worn alone or under make-up. I decided to go for this Primer after reading various different reviews on the Boots website. I didn't want to spend lots of money on a Primer; how-ever I wanted something that was going to work. My current Primer I can only purchase on the internet and it costs me at least £15.00 for a small pump bottle of it.
~ Price/Availability ~
You can purchase this from Boots and Superdrug for £8.99 which I don't think is too badly priced.
~ Packaging ~
The Primer comes in a small glass pot with a beige coloured lid. It actually took me a while to find the primer as it looks like the dream mousse foundation. The glass pot only holds 7ml of the Primer. You can see the actual Primer through the small glass pot which is clear in colour. As the pot is made from glass this does make it a little heavy, how-ever it is small enough to fit into a make-up bag on even in your handbag.
~ Using the product ~
I cleansed my skin and also applied a moisturiser before using this product. I always give the moisturiser at least 5-10mins to soak into my face so that the primer doesn't glide about when applying it to my face. I unscrewed the primer and had a look at the actual product. The primer had what looked like a slight pink tinge to it. I dipped a finger into the primer so a small amount went onto my finger. The primer was really soft and felt slightly gel like. I applied the primer according to the instructions. The primer felt really smooth and silky as I applied it to my face. I didn't apply too much of the primer as I noticed that a little of it goes a long way. After applying the primer I stood back to look at the results. My skin looked and felt smooth wearing just the primer; how-ever I was going to apply some liquid foundation shortly. I always wait for at least 5 minutes before apply the liquid foundation in order for the primer to settle onto the skin on my face. Using a foundation brush I then applied the liquid foundation in the way I normally would. I finished the look by dusting some loose powder over my face to set the make-up. I looked into the mirror and had a look at the final results.
~ Results ~
The primer had noticebly smoothed my skin and it appeared smoother and felt softer. I had one or two pimples showing and the primer helped to hide and cover them up before applying the actual make up. The primer had smoothed the area around it and also toned down the redness slightly. The finished results were fantastic, my make-up looked smooth and flawless and my skin looked in fantastic condition. I went out with my boyfriend ready for a few drinks on the town and I was hoping that my make-up would stay looking this good during the whole time we were out. I did pop into the ladies a few times throughout the night and checked my face to see if my make-up still looked great. Sure enough it still looked flawless and smooth and the primer had done a brilliant job of keeping the make up looking great all night. Even after being out for at least 5-6hrs and arriving home my make-up still looked flawless and smooth. My make-up certainly lasted a lot longer than it normally would without using the primer or my previous primer; I was very impressed with the results. I have used the primer 2-3 times already and it always gives fantastic results each time. I suffer from sensitive skin and the primer doesn't irritate my skin or bring me out in any spots which is good. The product is easily removed at the end of the day/night using facial wipes.
~ Overall Opinion ~
When I first purchased the product I was really hoping that this would be a primer that I could buy again and that it would provide fantastic results. I was very impressed with the results this product gave. The primer is suitable for wearing along or with make up over the top and provides a smooth and flawless finish suitable for day and night. When using other primers in the past make up hasn't seemed to last longer, how-ever when using this primer my make-up lasted all night and kept my skin looking smooth and flawless. I was very impressed at how long lasting the primer actually was. In terms of value, it is a little pricey; how-ever I only really use a primer when I am going for a night out on the town or at weekends. I don't use a primer during the week to work so the product will last me at least 2 months if not more. If you do use a primer every-day then this product will probably be a little pricey as you will need to purchase it on a regular basis. This is by far the best primer I have ever purchased and tried. I am now even going to make this my main primer and stop using my previous one as I much prefer the results with this one. This product deserves a 5 out of 5 stars and I highly recommend it to others.
