Advantages: Not clumpy and bright eye catching packaging

Disadvantages: Small brush

I generally stick to using the same mascara, but I got bored of my regular one and decided to try something new to see if it worked any better. I don't believe in spending a lot on mascara and this one only cost me £4.88, which is about what I expect to pay.

It seems to be Maybelline's cheapest mascara so I wasn't expecting it to be all singing all dancing such as the more expensive ones claim to be. The packaging was eye catching although the colours are a bit odd. The tube is pink and the lid is green, which does clash. But it drew my eye towards it in the shop last weekend.

It comes in a plastic and cardboard casing which seems a bit extravagant as the other brands I have bought are just the tube on its own. There are no details on the tube, just the name, the quantity and the colour on the lid. The other details are on the cardboard packaging which seems a bit silly because this is thrown away and not kept for future reference.

There are four varieties of the great lash mascara. I bought the normal one, which claims to condition as it thickens, but there is also a waterproof version, one with a curved brush and a new 'Big' version which has a larger brush for 'Great Big Live-it-up lashes'.

That brings me onto the brush. I don't mind if it is not curved, but I found this brush to be really small. On applying it to the lashes I could only cover a few because it was not long enough to get all of the top lashes in one go. This made application a bit uneven as I had to go back to do the ones I had missed and ended up with slightly more on the middle lashes where they had got coated twice. If I had known the brush was going to be so small I would have probably opted for the one with the 'Big' brush.

One other downside is that the mascara itself seems to be quite thin and when I applied it, it went straight through my lashes and ended up on my eyelid. This made it awkward as I then had to wipe it off with a cotton bud whilst taking some of the eye shadow off at the same time.

Having said this, I thought that it wasn't all a bad product. Once it was applied it did not take long to try and did not feel too heavy. It was not clumpy and two coats really defined my eye lashes. It is small and light weight so it easily fits in a handbag. Also, due to the colour, it can easily be found in the handbag as well compared to the other brands in brown or black packaging.

I thought it was good value for money and seeing as I spent less than £5 on it I wasn't expecting miracles. I won't rush out to but another one to replace it, I will wait until it is finished, but I might not buy it again.

Summary: Does what you expect from a cheap mascara

A small brush would annoy, as that would mean it takes longer to apply! Nice review :)
